Texas AG forces counties to continue gun shows

Officials in Travis County, Texas on Tuesday ditched their plans to ban gun shows on county property after Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott threatened a “double-barreled lawsuit.”

The decision means that nine gun shows will take place as planned at the Travis County Exposition Center. Commissioners made their determination after an hour-long meeting with county attorneys, according to The Austin American Statesman.

“I take very seriously the idea of abiding by the law,” Commissioner Sarah Eckhardt reportedly said. ”State law prevents this court from doing much of anything on this issue.”

Legislative agenda means that Congress gets to consider. That means that Congress gets to chew through the legislative recommendations by the Administration and spit out whatever it doesn’t want/like.

Hardly tyrannical. It’s the legislative process after all.

Of the recommendations, the universal background checks is something that could potentially see the light of day as well as some of the mental health provisions.

While the attention is on AWB, the overwhelming majority of homicides and suicides are carried out with handguns, which aren’t being treated by a AWB. The mental health provisions could potentially reduce the suicide rates and crimes by the mentally ill, and that by itself would be a significant achievement. How it gets done - respecting the privacy and rights of the mentally ill is a challenge, but one that can be overcome.

• Engaging in Public Health Research on the Causes and Prevention of Gun Violence

Not by EO mind you but by a memoranda.

I agree. I’m less impressed with the assault weapons ban. I don’t object to it but I’m not sure if it’s going to be effective in reducing violence.
For me the biggest missing puzzle piece is reducing handgun crime in cities like Chicago, DC, LA, etc. If I’m not mistaken these types of crimes make up the vast majority or gun crimes but it seems to be the least discussed part of the problem.

Closer to three four months, I’d guess. It’s a lot harder to get ammonium nitrate fertilizer thanks to Tim McVay. So to get a big enough amount they’ll probably have to steal it which will take some time for planning - or have the caught in the act. Seriously. The argument was that the research was or could be intended to aid advocacy for suppression of the second amendment. Yes, it’s as stupid as it sounds.

But what happened was that Congress (forget the year) specifically removed the amount of money in the budget to pay for the study. When the CDC pulled the money from other resources Congress reduced their funding again AND added a “do not investigate” instruction.

Not this House. 179 voted against the last Hurricane Sandy relief bill. It’s a club of saboteurs.

Yes, but it still passed.

Kittens and gumdrops compared to meaningful gun control. Either we get a Supreme Court that is willing to rethink itself, or we go through the booby-trapped maze of a constitutional amendment.

Thats why we have to put pressure on all of our representatives. If enough blue state republicans get enough pressure it could happen.
I am not all Pollyanna about this…I realize it is a long shot, but I refuse to give up before the fight.

Yes, but it still passed.

GOP house leadership brought Sandy relief up for a vote (they didn’t dare sit on it). After that, the disaster relief was going to pass.

For gun control, the real question is what, if anything, will the GOP leadership let come to a vote. This isn’t as urgent as disaster relief, so the leadership will want to do nothing.

Yes, thats why I said…IF we could get it to a floor vote. Pressure!
That includes Harry Reid.
