Nope. Normal rotation. There are only 5 of us covering 24/7, so we rotate around. 2 out of the 5 have to be on overnights to get them all covered, so we do 3-6 months of “days”, then 3 months of overnights. Add to that all during the summer and all around major holidays one of us is on PTO, so now it’s 4 people covering 24/7
Overtime? Oh hell yeah!!!

Getting some notice this morning is an intentionally (self-aware) optimistic article published by the UK Geologic Society:
Future Rx: optimism, preparation, acceptance of risk
The abstract starts out thusly:
The world contains the energy and mineral resources needed to sustain 10.5 billion (the level the world population is expected to reach in 2100) at a European standard of living for hundreds of centuries.
Sounds wonderful, let’s continue on:
Using physical and chemical principles to extrapolate from what we know, it is shown that the required resources are present, largely in the world’s oceans. The environmental consequences of shifting to ocean supply will be positive, and a transition from fossil fuels to low carbon energy sources is provided by natural gas. The eventual steps required are big (thousands of nuclear reactors, country-size solar facilities in desert areas, large mining operations) and there are risks, but the risks are small compared with failing to meet the expectations of a growing world. The best course is to aim for success (all at European standard by 2113), accept and manage the risks of development, solving unforeseen problems as they arise, accept the transition to gas, and train and engage the best talents to prepare to tap the ocean’s resources.
The problem with these sort of arguments is that they just don’t present a realistic way of changing societies to accept the proposals. No one is building thousands of nuclear reactors today, no one has plans to, and post-Fukushima most publics are scared more than ever of nuclear power.

This is classic: a geologist looks at the problem and sees an entire planet, which is much, much larger than the puny humans living on it, and declares that there isn’t really a problem.
You can read the paper for yourself. I hope you will notice the dearth of data and discussion about biology, and similarly an absence of economics pretty much makes the entire argument set in his paper moot.
But a geologist only sees a great big planet.
Here is reality: The problem with humans isn’t the planet - it’s the humans.

Sadly, sounds much like the Muslim community in Prague. I’m not so sure about the one in Brno.
There’s only two mosques in the Czech Republic - the one in Prague had its imam bounced out a few years ago by a revolt among the worshipers who felt he was an extremist; this caused a rift in the Muslim community, and the more hyper-conservative worshipers repaid the favor by bouncing out the more liberal replacement.
I’ve found nothing about Brno, other than the community is tiny.

Resources are not infinite, are not readily available, the technology that would be needed to drain the ocean of its resources isn’t even available yet, although it might be within reach, but would we want that?
I see burgeoning populations as part of the problem now, and even populations in Europe right now are not all living “at a European standard of living”, whatever the author means—the European version of “middle class”?
Yes, technology and science will advance, but in the meantime, will the socio-political ramifications of huge populations and the attendant problems of poverty, dispossession, immigration, discrimination, national policies, etc have offsetting negative effects?

Wingnuts are all over this alleged Obamacare call center worker who took a call from the Hannity show and got fired.
I work at a call center (not taking phone calls, I am several layers behind that), the people who take calls are in Customer Service. If they get a call from someone who is a) Not A Customer b) Just called to Dick Them Around, there is a process in place to get these fake callers off the line so that actual customers can be serviced.
Staying on the line with a Non-Customer and bad-mouthing the Hotline on public media is YES YOU ARE SO TOTALLY FIRED.

When I had a foot operation in the early 90s, I was prescribed dilaudid post-op. I think I may have taken 2 of them and the reaction I got was worse than the bit of pain I was experiencing. I threw the rest in the trash and took some OTC, aspirin, I think. It was one of the worst drugs I’ve ever had to take, along with percocet (which made me throw up). I always tell drs who might want to prescribe “something for pain” that I don’t need anything and if I do, it’s OTC.
Of course, I realize pain can be very subjective—and that is part of the problem, too, no doubt. It can be faked.

Well, it turns about Congress is more productive when there’s pork to be gobbled:
Water projects flow despite tea party
Pressure from conservatives helped push the GOP to shut down the government, strip food stamps out of the farm bill and bring the country to the brink of default.
But when many of the same groups united against an $8.2 billion water infrastructure bill, tea-party Republicans in the House weren’t listening.
Instead, GOP members joined with Democrats late Wednesday in a 417-3 vote to green-light a suite of dam, port-dredging, flood protection and environmental restoration projects, withstanding pressure from conservative groups that said the bill does too little to reform the lumbering, big-spending Army Corps of Engineers.
The near-unanimous roll call was enough to give some members “whiplash,” lawmakers said, while offering a contrast to the schism that divided moderate and conservative Republicans during the shutdown. It also showed that groups like Heritage Action, FreedomWorks and Americans for Prosperity have limits to their sway with the current crop of House conservatives — not enough to keep lawmakers from steering money to popular projects back home.
Beyond that, these kinds of big water project bills are bipartisan affairs that have historically won by huge margins. And the House’s version, while formally disavowing earmarks, offered plenty of benefits to Republican lawmakers, steering most of the projects and potential money to GOP-held House districts, according to a POLITICO analysis.
Meanwhile, Congress — and more specifically the House GOP — has been taking a thrashing in the polls after the 16-day shutdown this month. The water bill offered a chance to show Americans that lawmakers were getting back to work.
Notably, Heritage Action did not declare this a ‘key vote’, meaning they won’t use this vote rank members of Congress. But that was more a case of HA not giving an order it knew would not be obeyed.

I never saw “The Wire”, so no, I don’t know. I’m not stupid about opioids because I have a son who was an addict for many years, at one point even injecting heroin and on methadone for many yrs. A lifetime of carelessness and alcohol and drug use finally caught up with him, and he suffers from a variety of ailments, including Hep C w/extensive liver damage, COPD, heart disease (w/stents), hbp, weak bones and other ailments. And I know that “hillbilly heroin” sells for about $20 a pill around here (at least that was the going rate a few yrs ago). It’s not hard for someone on Medicare to get those drugs and make some money on the side, which a former tenant here and her 40-something daughter did before they were busted by the cops. 30x$20—that’s a good supplement to a SS check if you don’t get high on your own supply.
We still love my son, father, grandfather, of course, but he and his brother are estranged because of an incident that happened about 10 yrs ago during an argument when he was high and kicked his brother, who was working w/him, out of his truck on the interstate, stranding him. I keep hoping they reconcile before I die, but it may not happen.
When I talk about drugs affecting families, I think I know what I’m talking about. I don’t have any more answers than anyone else, though.

There’s pork in it. It’s not problematic, though, just the sort of log-rolling Congress needs to engage in to pass major legislation. It doesn’t bother me and you’re right that most of the projects are necessary. You’re not going to see a politically aware person who lives in Cook County, IL try to argue against water projects; The Chicago area has, after all, needed quite a few of them.

If the ride had stopped and the lap bars were unlatched then the safety interlocks should have prevented the ride from starting back up. But apparently the ride simply started back up as people were trying to get off even though the restraints were not in the locked position. Even if the control operator made an error and mistakenly hit the wrong button, it still should not have been able to start.
One of the five injured was one of the ride’s operators who was helping people out of the restraints. This ride has a metal mechanically operated shoulder/lap bar that comes down over the typical foam padded over the shoulder restraints to doubly lock them into place. The metal lap bar releases automatically when the ride ends but the foam padded harness still has to be manually lifted by the rider or one of the operators to exit the ride.
The ride is supposedly inspected three times a day by the N.C. dept. of labor inspectors. On Monday a faulty safety switch on one of the lap bars caused the ride to be shut down until it was repaired and re-inspected.

Mine is definitely through ATT as it is part of my ATT Internet package that I’ve had for about 10 years.

Yeah internet bugs = disasters where people actually died. It’s really rich hearing people who shut the government down over this legislation complaining about problems with a website when they did everythign to sabotage it. This kind of thing happens in the private sector all the fucking time.

It’s 231 miles off the coast; from what I’ve been able to find so far, there are some local tsunami warnings but in the 1-2 meter range.
The real question becomes how much work has gotten done on repairing the tsunami barriers in those areas, although another question is also how many people are there to be affected. It’s worth remembering that the Japanese are far more used to events of that magnitude than we are, both in terms of earthquake and in terms of tsunamis.

My best guess would be:
1. The Star of David on the flag in the background reminds people he’s Jewish, which is a bad thing for some people.
2. The star is red instead of the usual blue, so it’s reminiscent of the post-WWII McCarthyism/Red Scare that targeted many Jews involved in the movie industry.

It is in that region, but I suspect that they’ve worked to repair the tsunami barriers, which have worked fine for this class of event before. The tsunami 2 years ago was orders of magnitude larger and not something the barriers were able to cope with. I’m more worried about shake damage to the temporary holding tanks, although it sounds like the ground movement in those areas was not terribly strong.

Ate a roasted ear of corn bought from a woman on another boat. Listened to the Mariachis. Then the group (from my college) moved on to the National Autonomous University of Mexico. I slept on the lawn there.
A few days later, me and one guy hitchhiked from Cuernavaca to Acapulco. That’s one of those things that I would never do again, but it was great.

I was there for a month, and only terribly sick for about three days. Saw Guadalajara, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Cuernavaca, Acapulco, and spent the last week in thatched huts on the beach in Zihuatanejo, before the airport was built in Ixtapa.
Took a second-class train from Mexicali to Guadalajara because we missed the first class train we were supposed to catch. 36 hours instead of 12. That was a great introduction to being a resilient traveler.
On the way back, I noticed that I could understand the Spanish being spoken more easily the farther north I went.
