Here’s a good backgrounder from NPR’s All Things Considered on the huge uprising in Ukraine against President Yanukovich, triggered by his decision to abandon a trade deal with the European Union: Ukranians Face Choice Between EU and Russia : NPR.

Thousands of Ukrainian protesters blockaded government buildings in Kiev Monday seeking to oust President Viktor Yanukovich. Demonstrations over the weekend drew as many as 350,000 people in the largest rally since the Orange Revolution. The protests came after Yanukovich decided to abandon a trade deal with the European Union and instead seek closer ties with Russia. Robert Siegel talks to Steven Pifer, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, about the political landscape in the country and its relationship with Moscow.

Putin has had some good luck recently (Syria, Iran, Egypt) and I’d love to see winning steak come to an end. I posted this on the previous thread (news.com.au ) and it looks like a more complicated decision than aligning with the EU or Russia. Ukrainian politics is a messy and corrupt business. The choice of leaning towards the EU might improve things but there’s a good chance the country will continue corrupt and brutal politics.

Therefore, Ukranians are Russian.

Shouldn’t that be war by Christmas?

Or maybe Christmas is just fighting back?

Speaking of which, you might be interested in this paper in the latest special issue of Human Biology:

“Small Size” in the Philippine Human Fossil Record: Is It Meaningful for a Better Understanding of the Evolutionary History of the Negritos?

“Pygmy populations” are recognized in several places over the world, especially in Western Africa and in Southeast Asia (Philippine “negritos,” for instance). Broadly defined as “small-bodied Homo sapiens” (compared with neighboring populations), their origins and the nature of the processes involved in the maintenance of their phenotype over time are highly debated. Major results have been recently obtained from population genetics on present-day negrito populations, but their evolutionary history remains largely unresolved. We present and discuss the Upper Pleistocene human remains recovered from Tabon Cave and Callao Cave in the Philippines, which are potentially highly relevant to these research questions. Human fossils have been recovered in large numbers from Tabon Cave (Palawan Island) but mainly from reworked and mixed sediments from several archaeological layers. We review and synthesize the long and meticulous collaborative work done on the archives left from the 1960s excavations and on the field. The results demonstrate the long history of human occupations in the cave, since at least ~30,000 BP. The examination of the Tabon human remains shows a large variability: large and robust for one part of the sample, and small and gracile for the other part. The latter would fit quite comfortably within the range of variation of Philippine negritos. Farther north, on Luzon Island, the human third metatarsal recently recovered from Callao Cave and dated to ~66,000 BP is now the oldest direct evidence of human presence in the Philippines. Previous data show that, compared with H. sapiens (including Philippine negritos), this bone presents a very small size and several unusual morphological characteristics. We present a new analytical approach using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics for comparing the Callao fossil to a wide array of extant Asian mammals, including nonhuman primates and H. sapiens. The results demonstrate that the shape of the Callao metatarsal is definitely closer to humans than to any other groups. The fossil clearly belongs to the genus Homo; however, it remains at the margin of the variation range of H. sapiens. Because of its great antiquity and the presence of another diminutive species of the genus Homo in the Wallace area during this time period (H. floresiensis), we discuss here in detail the affinities and potential relatedness of the Callao fossil with negritos that are found today on Luzon Island.

The whole issue is open access. It touches on the awkwardly named “negrito” populations of SE Asia. The concluding paper makes an interesting point:

Concluding Remarks: What’s in a Name? “Negritos” in the Context of the Human Prehistory of Southeast Asia

[…]

Using genome-wide scans of individuals from short-statured populations (including those classified as negritos) in Africa, Asia, and Melanesia, Migliano et al. (this issue) consider the evidence for positive selection for short stature. They show that negritos in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea are genetically more similar to their non-negrito neighbors than to each other. They conclude that geographically distant negrito groups are likely to have evolved short stature independently, but not through selection on genes associated with height variation. This leaves open the possibility that short stature among negritos is a by-product of other biological processes, immunogenetic responses to infection being the most likely among them. […]

Examples of evolution at work.

Just don’t tell that furry little monkey or he’ll just get more depressed.

The conflict is between the western Ukraine (very Eurocentric, culturally musical and artistic with a liberal educational history), and the eastern Ukraine (heavy industry, and Soviet influenced Kulturny, with all that implies).

The tension between these two cultural dynamics, in many cases oppositional, is the basis of the conflict. The Femen are in the west, the Putinists are in the east.

It’s going to be a bumpy but very interesting ride.

Well I officially became a card carrying communist Union member today.

I don’t care what the right wingers say, I like the protection of a union especially the kind of economic climate that exists today.

I do agree with the right wingers that Unions should not be necessary. I’d love to see the day when we didn’t have to have unions because companies treat (and pay) their employees fairly.

However, I know I’ll never live to see that day.

The eastern Ukraine has the Donets and Kharkov, the later of which still has a tank factory, one whose workers Putin has courted by purchasing parts made there for Russia’s remaining T-80 MBTs.

Then there’s the Crimea, which still holds a major Russian naval base and which also benefits from Russian vacationers from May through September.

re: #35 austin_blue

That would be my point.

I was just illustrating it.

A fun fact I just learned was that despite the moving of factories by the Soviet Union in 1941, the Germans were still able to secure a naval materials facility that had cranes powerful enough to lift the 53-ton Tiger tank, and the early 1943 counter-offensive by von Manstein had the retaking of that plant as an important objective, because it was the only place on the Eastern Front where the Germans could do factory level maintenance on the Tiger.

Probably no invasion for the Ukraine. When the Ukraine chose wrong in the past and elected pro-western presidents Russia shut down the gas pipelines that run to and through the Ukraine every time the temperature went below 0 and blamed the Ukraine for sabotaging the pipe lines. Putin has cut off heating gas in the winter to Europe and England to the point they have had to ration heating gas. And has openly promised to cut off the heating gas this winter if the EU trade deal was signed. Eastern agriculture based Ukraine leans toward Europe, Western heavy manufacturing based Ukraine towards Russia although I’ve forgotten if the western regions are Russian oriented because the workers are mostly from Russia or the factories sell to Russia with no other buyers. In the 1990’s any politician not favoring Russia running for top government jobs ended up poisoned or shot before they could be sworn into office. I assume Putin will declare that food from the Ukraine is somehow tainted and won’t allow it to be imported by Russians. Any ethnic Ukrainian markets in Russia will be closed and Ukrainians working in Russia will be treated as terrorists. That is what Putin has been doing to all the former Russian states since they declared independence.

re: #43 Killgore Trout

Heh this Alan Grayson quote one is my personal favorite.

“The Republicans’ health care plan for America: “Don’t get sick.” That’s right — don’t get sick. If you have insurance, don’t get sick; if you don’t have insurance, don’t get sick; if you’re sick, don’t get sick — just don’t get sick! That’s what the Republicans have in mind for you, America. That’s the Republicans’ health care plan. But I think that the Republicans understand that that plan isn’t always going to work — it’s not a foolproof plan. So the Republicans have a backup plan, in case you do get sick. If you get sick in America, this is what the Republicans want you to do. If you get sick, America, the Republican health care plan is this: “Die quickly.” That’s right. The Republicans want you to die quickly if you get sick.”

Most likely people arguing that small amounts of additional elements found naturally in the salt change the flavor.

If they’re arguing anything else about it, it goes into the woo-woo category.

Changes in the trace element composition can affect flavor as we perceive it.

Either that or a placebo effect. ;) If you’re really curious, you could run a quick blind study (doesn’t need to be double blind if it’s not being submitted for publication) and get back to us.

re: #78 FemNaziBitch

What is the deal with himalayan salt?

In 2003 the Bavarian consumer protection agency Bayerisches Landesamt für Gesundheit und Lebensmittelsicherheit analyzed 15 specimens of Himalaya salt sold in Germany and could detect at least ten different minerals, in addition to sodium chloride (98%). The agency stated that the salts come from Pakistan and can, like all salts, cause hypertension (high blood pressure) if over used.[1] German public television broadcaster ZDF presented the analyzed chemical composition of Himalayan salt, stating that the specimen contained 95-96% sodium chloride, contaminated with 2-3% polyhalite and small amounts of ten other minerals. The pink color is due to iron oxide. en.wikipedia.org

I guess you could toss a little rust into your sea salt, and match it.

I’m likely going to regret posting this story, but its something likely to get posted by someone else if I don’t. Let the record show that I do not approve of the following legal opinion and am simply presenting it:

Kansas Attorney General says CCP holders can carry guns in some polling places

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt revealed in an opinion issued last Wednesday that residents with a valid concealed carry permit would be allowed to carry firearms into polling places, provided that the building being used allowed guns prior to the voting day.

The opinion was issued at the request of the Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach following confusion over an updated concealed carry law that took effect July 1. According to the updated law, those with a valid concealed carry permit would be allowed to carry firearms into public buildings deemed to have inadequate security measures, such as metal detectors and armed guards.

“We should not tread on their rights while at the same time take no steps to prevent criminals from bringing illegal weapons into public buildings,” State Sen. Forrest Knox, chief architect of the new regulations, said back in June, arguing that the state’s 80,000 concealed carry permit holders help “make all of Kansas safer.”

Another of the Election Night highlights was when word got out that Romney had been so sure he was going to win, he hadn’t even prepared a concession speech. And then the follow-up shortly after when campaign staff started telling friends and colleagues that the credit cards provided by the campaign had been cancelled within a couple hours of Romney’s concession, leaving many without so much as cab fare.

The answer lies in a post I saw once. A Conservative linked to a Dick Morris column, talking about how he was really smart and had a lot of good information. This was after wrong prediction after wrong prediction, but before the granddaddy of all bad predictions, the one about Romney.

Conservatives have short, creative memories. It’s what keeps them conservative.

Hey, I have a question.

When the College of Cardinals elected Francis, did they know what they were getting.

I have little doubt they knew, He was always open about his beliefs and he hasn’t changed. Not only did they know, they also took the very rare step of having the old pope step down prematurely.

On Tuesday morning - in a surprise and possibly shrewd move - the police took down barriers and razor wire outside their building and it was announced that the protesters were welcome inside, the BBC’s Jonah Fisher reports from Bangkok.

I’m skeptical of the Greenwald denials, since Snowden had previous conversations with Greenwald prior to his working at the NSA, and the thefts.

Remember, it’s been pointed out already that Snowden stole the passwords of others to do his dirty deeds.

I think Greenwald and Poitras are up to their eyeballs in this: Snowden didn’t work alone except in his capacity as the “hitman” inside the NSA. I’m not convinced by Greenwald’s coyness elsewhere, either, as in his insistence that it was Snowden who had to teach him how to encrypt emails. I don’t believe that for a minute.

I’m still on PS Elements 10, I’m a Microsoft person by trade, so I always have to adjust to Adobe products. Really don’t need to update, not coming close to pushing 10 to any real limits.

Besides, I’m frugal and won’t upgrade without real benefit.

RBS
who has also been called terms less kind than frugal at times

I know I’m a cheapskate. Mostly, it’s been out of necessity since I never made a lot of money and now living on SS. I only violated my thrifty nature once in a period my life when I was making more money, and got into trouble (and debt) for it, but even some of that was in trying to help other family members.

Even when I need something, I will look for an item on clearance or even better, a new, or nearly new. one from the local thrift store. It helps having donors who can afford lakeside McMansions living in the same area, and sometimes you have to have a little patience and be there on the right day to get that “special” buy. I’m always amazed at what people buy and then either don’t want or have no use for or replace items before they’re worn out. I suspect some are the “useless gifts” others buy for them.

The real revolution in our consumerist society would be if everyone stopped buying anything but the absolute necessities needed to survive.

Down in Alabama, there are a bunch of evangelicals who have basically “adopted” my son as their Pet Juice.

They have come to face the facts that he will be “damned forever.”

They have attempted to use the “But what if you’re wrong? What if you die and find out that Jesus is Lord?” which is a kind of “Pascal’s Wager” argument but really stupid and lame.

His answer is simple, “What if YOU’RE wrong?” and then “Even if you’re not wrong, which you totally ARE, I still want to be with my people, wherever they may be.”

She gets a tool set for her birthday. There will be no doorknobs left in the house.

Last time I donated, there is a questionnaire that EVERYONE has to fill out, and blood that is donated by people who are at high risk are labeled in such as way as to identify the blood but not humiliate the donor.
Also too: people who have lived in the U.K. can’t donate blood in the U.S. because of “Mad Cow”

Yes, but that’s the Roman Catholic Church, which is more learned, wiser, and generally calmer than most evangelical denominations. Some such denominations don’t even consider Catholics to be proper Christians, owing to Catholicism’s belief that the Bible should not for the most part be taken literally.

SCOTUS Rules Against Liberty University Challenge to Affordable Care Act

Despite the historically high passage rates, the School of Law’s ranking given by the U.S. News & Word Report is not published,[15] indicating that it is in the bottom 25% of ranked law schools.[16] Additionally, the National Jurist has given the School of Law an “F” for employment, a “D+” for bar pass, and a “B+” for diversity and for affordability.[17]

Liberty University is a private, Christian university located in Lynchburg, Virginia, United States. Liberty’s annual enrollment includes 12,600 residential students and over 90,000 online students as of May 2013.[4][5][6]

The students at Liberty University received approximately $445 million in federal financial aid money in 2010, the highest total of any school in Virginia and one of the highest in the country.[108][109] The total, a 56 percent increase over the prior year, was mostly in the form of student loans, but also included some grants and other forms of aid.[108] Campus officials estimated the total received in 2013 at $775 million.[110]

The GOP and the rabble rousers at Fox and other right wing sites are setting such a mighty low bar for what they consider to be impeachable offenses, that they ought to quit while they’re behind.

If the development of a website runs into glitches and delays is impeachable, what does that say about a slow emergency response following 9/11 when the EPA said the air was safe when it wasn’t? Or the response for Katrina, or blizzards, or any other natural disaster? Those kinds of delays and glitches cost actual lives. The ACA website? It’s about giving people access to health insurance so they can improve the quality of life and reduce health care costs to them over the long haul. The GOP has been fighting that modest effort tooth and nail.

But this goes back to the fact that they just can’t stand that there’s a black guy in the White House.

They fantasize about an armed uprising, but most of them do know on some level that such a thing would be fairly unpleasant, so they’d settle for impeachment.

I’d also point out that having the largest number of guns is not itself an indicator. Some people are collectors, such as a man in Illinois who has every (semi-auto) variant of the M1 Carbine from every manufacturer (except Howra in Japan). As such he has a number of what some would call “assault weapons”, but they are owned as part of a collection rather than as a “revolution cache”.

With public benefit programs being cut left and right at both state and federal levels, what “stuff” are we looking at?

If they arrested that old dude last week, this guy should be in stir right now, too.

And Facebook appears not to give a fuck. SMDH.

Agreed. The man who posted that should be arrested, tried, and imprisoned. Making death threats is illegal and frankly, given the recurring ‘active shooter’ incidents in this country law enforcement needs to be more proactive about arresting, disarming, and jailing crazies. If that means some new jails have to be built, so be it.

The study reported that on average men are more likely better at learning and performing a single task, such as navigating.

Women meanwhile were likelier to have a superior memory and social cognition skills — making them better equipped for multi-tasking and creating solutions which could work for a group.

“It’s quite striking how complementary the brains of women and men really are,” said one of the study’s authors, Ruben Gur.

Now the hard part. You are faintly amused by your brother, not laughing at him-just…amused. But hey, you’re kind of indulgent because you are contented and he still has to put on airs.

TPM had a story out yesterday that Issa’s engaging in another snipe hunt, now demanding the big-name insurance companies fork over all documented exchanges and conversations with the White House to his committee, as he is apparently looking for evidence that the President knowingly “lied” when issuing the insurance “promise” in ‘10.

Geller Attacks New York Times For Reporting On Cancer Rate Among Jewish Women

After attacking Pope Francis, anti-Muslim activist Pamela Geller is now going after the New York Times for reporting that the high rate of breast cancer among Israeli women has led to calls for a “national screening campaign to test women for cancer-causing genetic mutations common among Jews.”

“Jews of Ashkenazi, or central and eastern European, backgrounds, who make up about half the Jews in Israel and the vast majority of those in the United States, are much more likely to carry mutations that increase the risks for both breast and ovarian cancers, according to the National Cancer Institute,” the Times reported.

But according to Geller, such reporting means the Times is sending the message that “Jews = cancer.” […]

THE CANCEROUS NEW YORK TIMES

On the first night of Chanukah, the New York Times indulged in its grotesque penchant for its special brand of subtle, sophisticated Jew-hatred, on the front page - of course. […]

Front page. It’s really vile - disgusting. A tattooed (tattoos are a violation of Jewish law) Jewish star above a nipple as the image for the “Jews’ genetic predisposition to cancer.” Jews = cancer. Jews were tattooed and naked when they were killed in concentration camps. The Times must be taking its talking points from Iran. […]

So people who depend on their $17k/year pensions, fuck ‘em. We already got all the work we’re going to get out of them, right? Commitments and contracts mean nothing when poor people need money.

Commitments and contracts mean nothing to the teabags when it comes to real actual human beings. Conversely, commitments and contracts mean everything when it comes to Defense Contractors, Big Oil, Big Tobacco, Big [insert RWNJ favorite industry], etc.

The woman is clearly insane. Yeah Pam, the Times pointing out that Jewish women of Eastern European decent are more likely to get certain kinds of cancer is libelous and antisemitic but what you do against Muslims isn’t hateful at all. What a deranged woman.

Contracts are iron-clad and unbreakable when they involve executive compensation, open to renegotiation or subject to nullification when they involve employee pay or pensions.

One other thing to note: The judge handling Detroit’s bankruptcy is a grad of the University of Michigan and taught a class there this fall. Judge Rhodes has been a bankruptcy court judge since 1985. He also co-wrote a book last year on “unraveling Ponzi schemes”. So this isn’t a mouth-breather from Liberty University.

This story didn’t have the happy ending of say, Batkid, but it touched a whole lot of people a few towns over from where I live. Ridgewood NJ decided to make this kid a police captain for the day earlier this year as part of an in-school program; the actual captain in turn made him honorary captain for the year. He passed away a few days ago, and the town gave him a police funeral - with all the honors.

Michael Feeney died last week after a four-year struggle with a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer. On Tuesday, the village honored him with a funeral with full police honors.
“He was just extraordinary,” the village mayor, Paul Aronsohn, told NBC News ahead of the service. “If you met him, you would know it. Big smile, big spirit. A big sense of the possible. He was a little guy, and he was just so big. Everything about him.”

At least 24 police departments were represented at the funeral. A bugle corps from the Bergen and New Jersey Transit police sounded a faint drumbeat to lead the procession into the church — friends, family and the casket, draped with an American flag. Eighty officers flanked the entrance.
“I lost a partner today,” the Ridgewood police chief, John Ward, told reporters.

Michael, who was in fifth grade at Hawes Elementary School, had a short life that was plagued with health problems, but they never managed to surmount what people close to him described as a relentless spirit.

His mother, Jill Feeney, contracted a virus while she was pregnant that left the child with a 15 percent chance of survival, The Bergen Record newspaper reported. At age 6, after persistent shoulder pain, he was diagnosed with the cancer, Ewing’s sarcoma.

Michael had shoulder replacement surgery, radiation and, recently, brutal chemotherapy treatments.

But the child made it to MetLife Stadium in October, “screaming, dancing, cheering” as his beloved New York Giants beat the Minnesota Vikings, his father, Jack Feeney, told the newspaper.

The mayor said that Michael came to him for advice in September, when he was running for president of the student council. He wanted help with his stump speech. The mayor said he had little to add.

“His speech was already great,” he said. “I don’t remember what he was offering in his platform. But it’s always about the people, the students. Too often elected officials think it’s about them. He got that right away.”

In June, the mayor swore in Michael as honorary police chief for a day. Facebook photos from the ceremony show the child signing papers to make it official, trying out the chief’s big chair, and inspecting a village jail cell — with his sister, Cassandra, inside. He released her to take a math test.

The police department praised the boy after his death for “inspiring others with his courage, his compassion for others and his desire to make a positive difference for his community and for young people.”
The police chief, making note of the huge presence at the funeral on Tuesday, said: “He loved stopping traffic. He really would have liked this today.”

Two weeks ago, when the family was on vacation at Walt Disney World, the village wanted to make sure Michael celebrated one more Christmas. So hundreds of people strung lights and ornaments on the Feeneys’ house and put a Santa Claus and sleigh on the roof, The Record reported.
In Ridgewood, a village of about 25,000 people just across the Hudson River from New York City, Michael was to light the tree at a downtown celebration on Friday night, right alongside the Ridgewood High School marching band.

Before he died, he helped form a new community policing youth ambassador program. The town will be naming the program after Feeney.

I don’t even….so, apparently, the flagship newspaper in this country publishing something that should, at very least, make more Ashkenazi women get screened for cancer and perhaps save their lives….yeah, that’s the same as Auschwitz. This is so fucking insane that I’m speechless. Yes, she needs to be in a rubber room.

It’s my understanding that a couple with both parents of Ashkenazi descent will have pregnancies screened for Tay-Sachs, because that’s also a deadly disease that disproportionately affects Ashkenazi populations. I suppose in Gellar’s world, such screenings for genetic diseases are just confirming Himmer’s thoughts about racial superiority/inferiority.

re: #353 Ian G.

I recall the NYT highlighting the work of a group in NYC trying to get Orthodox Jews to get genetic counseling because of the possibility of passing on genetic disorders. Their stated goal was to eliminate 10 of the most genetic diseases altogether through screening and counseling. The research and work done in the Jewish community just scratches the surface considering that these diseases also affect the general population, but in smaller numbers:

Thirty years later, Tay-Sachs is virtually gone, its incidence slashed more than 95 percent. The disease is now so rare that most doctors have never seen a case.

Emboldened by that success and with new technical tools that make genetic screening cheap and simple, a group is aiming even higher. It wants to eliminate nine other genetic diseases from the Ashkenazic population, which has been estimated at 10 million, in a worldwide screening.

The groundwork is laid, the group says. Its members — genetic counselors, geneticists and pediatricians at the New York University School of Medicine, the Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine — point out that the genes for the major recessive diseases that afflict Ashkenazim have been isolated. New technology allows screening for all those diseases, plus Tay-Sachs, at once.

That, some geneticists say, is what the Human Genome Project has promised, an ability to scan a person’s genes and find those that can cause disease.

Critics say such projects are just what worry them about the genome project. People will receive a flood of genetic information that may be difficult to understand and interpret about diseases, unlike Tay-Sachs, that can have courses that are impossible to predict.

Some see the project as a test case.

”It is a model for delivering these genetic services,” said Dr. Michael M. Kaback, a geneticist at the University of California at San Diego. ”That is why it is important.”

Dr. Kaback, an architect of the Tay-Sachs screening, emphasized that worldwide screening for 10 diseases would be difficult, requiring careful attention to detail and to assessing the project as it starts. But, he said, ”It could work.”

The project ethicist, Nancy Neveloff Dubler, who directs the bioethics program at Montefiore, said the effort could show the positive side of screening. ”These are largely diseases that take a terrible toll early in life,” Ms. Dubler said. ”We could save families from sorrow and children from suffering. That’s a tremendously important goal.”

Some experts, however, worry about stigmatizing Jews. ”It’s a dilemma,” said Jayne C. Gershkowitz, director of the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association.

Ms. Gershkowitz fears that Jews will be seen as a people uniquely afflicted with 10 genetic diseases. In fact, most diseases occur in the general population, too, although the genes are much less prevalent.

Other ethnic groups have their own genetic diseases. For example, people of Mediterranean ancestry may have genes for an iron storage disease, beta-thalassemia, and blacks and Mediterraneans may have genes for sickle cell disease.
