Putin: “Snowden first met with our diplomats while in Hong Kong.”

Just a friendly tip for the New Yorker.

Perhaps the oddest part of the New Yorker’s Snowden interview article is where it addresses Snowden’s Hong Kong Russian consulate visit. Jane Mayer clearly thought the issue was worth raising in her piece, but instead of asking Snowden directly, she tosses the question to an ACLU legal adviser:

Some observers, looking at the possibility that Snowden was in league with the Russian government before taking asylum there, have pointed to a report in a Russian newspaper, Kommersant, that before leaving Hong Kong last June Snowden stayed at the Russian consulate. Snowden’s legal adviser, Ben Wizner, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union, denied that report, however, saying, “Every news organization in the world has been trying to confirm that story. They haven’t been able to, because it’s false.”

In order to address Ben Wizner’s claims, I give you Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, who in an early September interview with the Associated Press, brought up Snowden’s meeting with Russian diplomats in Hong Kong. Here’s video from the interview as presented by Russia Today:

Youtube Video

PUTIN: “I’m going to honestly tell you something I never said before, though I’ve hinted, but I haven’t said it. Snowden first met with our diplomats while in Hong Kong. I was told about it and that he was an intelligence agency employee. ‘What does he want?’ I asked. The answer was that he fought for freedom of information. Fought with illegal activities in the US and violations of international law. I said, ‘tell him that if he wants to stay in Russia he has to stop any work that damages Russia / US relations. We are not an NGO, we have national interests, and we have no intention of damaging Russian / American relations’. And he said, ‘no, I’m a human rights activist and I urge you to join my cause.” I said, ‘no, we aren’t joining his cause. If he wants to fight let him fight on his own.’ So he just walked out and that’s it.”

The part I’ve transcribed begins at ~1:50.

Whoa, that is TEH MOAST DERP ever by Erick.

No kidding. I’m particularly amused by this crap:

We have arrived at an age not of disbelief, but of unbelief. People start by rejecting never changing God in favor of ever changing science and then find their excuses to justify their unbelief. The trend these days is to claim Jesus never existed. They’ll accept Socrates based on the accounts of Plato, but they reject Jesus based on the accounts of eyewitnesses and secondary sources

Wait, science “changes”? Lemme know where the laws of physics have changed over time, Erick. Just because we simple primates don’t grasp it correctly the first time doesn’t mean it “changed”.

Also, who gives a rat’s ass if Socrates was real or not? Nobody is trying to prevent two gays from getting married because they insist that Socrates was against it.

Anyway, moving on:

You may choose not to believe. You may decide to claim Jesus lived, but was not God. You may decide the only way you can get around it is to claim he did not live.

I don’t believe. I happen to think Jesus did exist, but was probably just a radical (and yes, possibly mentally ill) preacher who was executed by the vicious autocrat Pontius Pilate (like so many Jewish revolutionaries in that day). Sorry.

But billions accept the written testimony of those who were eyewitnesses to history and they accept that, as a result, they must commit themselves to preserving life even on a wintry day in Washington when they’d rather be home.

I don’t think you know what the words “eyewitness” or “history” mean, Erick.

re: #27 Pie-onist Overlord

Fun with statistics time.

The National Right to Life Committee touted its latest poll, claiming that most Americans support their efforts to end abortion.

Except their own numbers tell a different tale.

Socons and nutjobs like Stockman want abortion illegal under all circumstances, a position held by about 10% of those polled. It’s an outlier position compared with those who would rather see it legal under all or most circumstances. The swing segment is those who want it legal only for instances of rape, incest, or saving the life of the mother. That’s a 28% grouping, that would see it legal under those circumstances. Take it away from the anti-abortion under any circumstances, and you find that the anti-abortion position is a lonely one indeed.

Poll after poll finds most Americans support access to a legal abortion under some formation - grouping together the various formulations: whether it’s for the rape, incest, medical exception, legal without conditions through 3 months, legal without condition through 6 months, or no limitation at all.

But Stockman and the NRTL want people to think that pro-life is a larger percentage of the polled than they really are.

How’s that for fun with statistics.

And if I’m correct, we have no eyewitness accounts of Hannibal. Or Boudica. Or Pyrrhus. Or many other figures who lived around 2000 years ago. We know after all how many important pieces of information has been lost to time. And on top of that, one thing that I think people forget when we debate Jesus’s historicity is that he was absolutely no one of significance in his own lifetime - preachers and Messiahs like him were getting executed every other week, after all.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to accept that a man named Jesus ( or whatever you spelled it back then) ran around, preached for a while, did something big in Jerusalem, and got executed/crucified for his actions.

So my question for Erick son of Erick: if you don’t trust the actual “eyewitnesses” to the “miracles” of Sathya Sai Baba, why are you so quick to trust the 2nd and 3rd-hand stories from 2 millenia ago about Jesus?

That worked but it wasn’t enough to stop the Romans. Siege engineering was a Roman specialty, and it was brought to bear effectively in crushing the Jewish Revolt. As Josephus wrote, the Romans “made a desert and called it ‘peace’.” That may happen in Kiev soon.

For Evans, who has mounted a mostly issue-driven and promising campaign until now, the challenge is no longer convincing voters that he should be the next Mayor of Philadelphia. His challenge is convincing Philadelphians he should stay in the race.

The dirty trick played on rival candidate John White was a cowardly and craven act. The fake Web site looked for all intents and purposes like the cyberspace home for White’s mayoral campaign.

The site features White’s picture, his biography and a “message from John.” It also featured, prominently, this supposed quote from White: “The black and the brown, if we unite, we’re going to control this city.”

The race-baiting quote is a bad English translation of an interview with White published in Spanish in the weekly newspaper Al Dia. What White actually told the newspaper was the standard minorities-are-disenfranchised-and-should-vote message.

Last week Evans said deputy campaign manager David Sirota knew Robert Richman, who apparently registered and paid for the fake Web site. Sirota and Richman were college dormmates and, Evans said, had talked about the Web site.

Evans has fired Sirota. Campaign manager John Fugett has taken some responsibility for this cyber slur and has resigned.

Putin has yet to react publicly to an escalation of protests in neighbouring Ukraine, where at least two activists were shot dead Wednesday in the latest outbreak of violence.

This is a work in progress. So I’m going to need your help on this. Because I’m not up to ten yet. But I’m making rapid progress. Here’s what I got so far.

1. Firearms are awesome. And you really need to protect your Second Amendment rights. Probably above anything else.

2. Black people complain too much. And I really wish they’d put a sock in it.

3. The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice. And to keep it bending, we need the death penalty.

4. Without freedom from federally regulated, affordable health care insurance, no other freedoms are possible.

5. Giving the African slaves firearms on disembarkation to America might have made the whole slavery story different.

The place I lived in before I came to this apartment was infested with bedbugs. Whenever I have a random itch, I look and half-expect to see one of the little devils.

They sprayed the old apartment, but it made no difference; the entire building was infested from top to bottom. They were back after a few weeks, and that’s when I said, “I’m outta here.”

My former residence had tons of huge brown field crickets about. And the usual summer crop of grasshoppers and katydids among the hedges, day lily, and morning glory plants.

The cats hunted the ones that came indoors - so I would find de-legged crickets lying around.

The local wolf spiders were monsters since they had big prey to hunt, and would face down me or the cats. (While the cats would take out the smaller “glass” spiders and also the thousand-leggers if they saw and successfully pursued them. The jumping spiders mainly hung around the exterior brick walls and did pretty well getting the grasshoppers. Some other predator lurked in the privet hedges…

While I’ll not pollute my browser cache by clicking that link it is true (in that the AJC did say that in 1945) but it’s a relic of an earlier time when Zionism was still, perhaps, an open question.

And the AJC’s calculations weren’t even necessarily wrong in their own time: Jews lived in (relative) peace in many parts of the Arab world, in Baghdad since the destruction of the (first) temple and in Egypt (see also: Elephantine papyri) probably even longer than that. Zionism was seen by a lot of Sephardi at the time as very much an importation of the particular political reality of the Ashkenazim into their backyard and there was some opposition to it. (And do note that this isn’t to say that there were no conflicts with Arab populations during the thousand-odd years of diaspora, especially towards the end of the period (in particular, of course, during the interwar years in Mandate Palestine)).

The foundation of the State of Israel put an effective (and often violent) end to these communities with hundreds of years of history. While the formation of the state was a necessary response for European Jewry after the Holocaust it was a political decision like any other, and one that we only remember with the blindness of hindsight to have been a unanimous one (for example, remember that historically almost all of Reform Judaism opposed zionism as did most Hasidic and Non-Hasidic Orthodoxies.).

Obviously, in 2014, this historical fact doesn’t really lead anywhere productive and it certainly doesn’t lead to the link’s (probable) preferred solution of “Drive the Jews into the sea”.

Court: Marotta is a father, not merely a sperm donor
Man responding to Craigslist ad now responsible for child support

cjonline.com

“A Shawnee County District Court judge ruled Wednesday that William Marotta was more than just a sperm donor, that he is also the presumptive father of a child born to a lesbian couple and is subject to paying child support as sought by the Kansas Department of Children and Families.

“In her written decision, District Court Judge Mary Mattivi said that because Marotta and the same-sex couple failed to secure the services of a physician during the artificial insemination process, he was not entitled to the same protections given other sperm donors under Kansas law.

“Kansas law is clear that a donor of semen provided to a licensed physician for use in artificial insemination of a woman other than the donor’s wife is treated in law as if he were not the birth father of a child thereby conceived, unless agreed to win writing by the donor and the woman,” Mattivi wrote.”

Iranian official on nuke deal: ‘We did not agree to dismantle anything’

As part of the deal, Iran was required to dilute its stockpile of uranium that had been enriched to 20%, well above the 5% level needed for power generation but still below the level for developing a nuclear weapon.

In addition, the deal mandated that Iran halt all enrichment above 5% and “dismantle the technical connections required to enrich above 5%,” according to a White House fact sheet issued in November after the initial agreement was reached.

Zarif accused the Obama administration of creating a false impression with such language.

“The White House tries to portray it as basically a dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program. That is the word they use time and again,” he said, urging Sciutto to read the actual text of the agreement. “If you find a single, a single word, that even closely resembles dismantling or could be defined as dismantling in the entire text, then I would take back my comment.”

He repeated that “we are not dismantling any centrifuges, we’re not dismantling any equipment, we’re simply not producing, not enriching over 5%.”

How To Make Bad Predictions Because You Have Swallowed The Bullshit About “What Liberals Believe”:

Sorry, America Isn’t Destined To Be More Liberal

Polls show that voters have little appetite for more regulation, much less the regulatory schemes that a progressive would have in store

Support for gay marriage does not mean support for unions. (Unions, one of backbones of political progressivism, have never been less popular in practice.) Pot legalization does not mean we’re ready for nationalize energy policy. And support for immigration reform doesn’t mean people are prepared to “Make Everything Owned by Everybody.” And while I certainly don’t believe we’re about to privatize Social Security, to believe that the philosophy of the electorate is on a fixed leftward arc — which seems to be conventional wisdom these days — is premature.

ya, sure, liberals are all about big gummint and communism

And such a party would be successful in the Deep South, but that’s about it. They’d quickly find themselves an almost purely regional party.

Romantic comedy about madcap typesetters?

Heh. That would be interesting to say the least.

Well, don’t forget, Chuck Barris was a game show host AND a CIA hitman. You never heard of career changers?

Pretty sure Barris made all that shit up.

Love that show. I recommend it to everyone who asks me which TV series they should be watching.

Did you recognize A.J. Buckley (lab tech from CSI New York) in his small role last week? He was the one who killed Dewey’s dumb cousin down in Florida.

When our daughter came to visit in Israel, she brought a Flat Stanley from her students. We gave him a kippah and for two weeks we posed him on every site in the country.

Will the State of Texas stop trying to manipulate this family?

Fetus in brain-dead Tarrant woman ‘distinctly abnormal,’ attorneys say

dallasnews.com

“Attorneys for the husband of a pregnant, brain-dead Tarrant County woman being kept on life support say the fetus inside of her is “distinctly abnormal.”

“Erick Munoz’s attorneys said in a statement Wednesday that the fetus that Marlise Munoz is carrying has several “abnormalities,” including a deformation of the lower body parts that make it impossible to determine its gender.

“Attorneys Heather King and Jessica Hall Janicek say they’re basing their statement on medical records received from John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. The hospital is keeping Marlise Munoz on life support against her husband’s wishes. Erick Munoz has sued the hospital. “

re: #391 Justanotherhuman

Have these people no shame? No I guess not. Have they no judgement? Nope, not that either.
How could anyone expect a dead body to function well enough for, say 10 or 12 weeks to give a fetus a relatively normal environment to develop in?

No, they have no shame. Munoz is their incubator but I doubt the fetus will survive very long, so what’s the point. She is brain dead and if she was in CA, she would be declared legally dead.

re: #391 Justanotherhuman

That whole case is engraging. Of COURSE the fetus is deformed. It’s trying to develop inside a dead body that’s being kept alive by artificial means. It’s not getting the proper anything to develop and grow on its own.

Christ. Let that woman’s family bury her already. Don’t drag this out further. It’s obscene.

re: #396 Lidane

And of course, if the fetus should survive and manage to be born and nurtured through whatever horrible deficits it has, these same folks will send it home to dad and provide absolutely no support. God never gives anyone more than they can handle, after all, so if you can’t take it you’re a loser who lets God down through not even trying.
Imagine my opinion of these folks.
