This must be what the GOP means by death panels:

Fitzgerald uses maneuver to prevent cancer drug vote

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald employed an unusual gambit Wednesday to keep his house from passing — at least for now — a bill to help cancer patients afford chemotherapy drugs.

The action by the Committee on Organization chaired by the Juneau Republican blocked supporters Wednesday from forcing a Senate vote on the bill, which would require insurance plans overseen by the state to provide coverage for expensive forms of chemotherapy drugs that patients take as pills rather than as infusions and injections.

Fitzgerald blocked the vote by scheduling — and then canceling — the second committee hearing in the last month on a bill that already had its usual public hearing last year.

Fitzgerald uses maneuver to prevent cancer drug vote

Speaking to reporters Wednesday after the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on the move, Fitzgerald said he believed the bipartisan bill would pass the Senate if it ever gets a floor vote but that he had used the procedural maneuver to give Republicans more time to decide if the bill should get that vote. He declined to say whether he supported the bill, saying it was a “tough issue” for Republicans on which there was little middle ground.

It’s a majority of the body (of senators supporting the bill) but not a majority of the Republican caucus,” he said.

This is despicable. By his own admission he acknowledges that the majority of the Senate would pass the bill, but a majority of his party doesn’t support it. Therefore, the only fair thing to do, since they can’t win in an up/down vote is to play ‘keep away’ with the vote on it.

Sickening.

The scale of the search for Flight MH370
By Richard Johnson and Denise Lu, Published: March 12, 2014

The search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is being compared to a quest for a needle in a haystack. Is it really that tough to find a 210-foot-long plane? You be the judge.

Yes, actually, it is. It took two years to find the fuselage components of AF 447 after it crashed in the Atlantic in 2009. The tail, famously floating in the ocean, was found after a few days, but the bulk of the airframe was discovered after a major search effort.

I HAZ JOB INTERVIEW. Well, a phone screening anyway. Heh.

A grad school classmate posted the other day about how her company was hiring and when I mentioned which position I was interested in, she got me in touch with the hiring manager and gave me his contact info. I sent him a resume and a letter and then applied online for the position. Today I heard back from both him and their lead recruiter. They saw my resume and want to talk! I’m excited. If things go well I could kick this unemployment shit to the curb. :D

Oklahoma Fox station removes evolution from ‘Cosmos’ by cutting only 15 seconds

Don’t know what to think of this, other than it wouldn’t surprise me if a technician felt “called” to keep Satan’s lies from the ears of the children of OK.

Future episodes will certainly touch on evolution, so for TV station it is a losing battle to fight against the network.

This is America:

Heart Land Patriots meet the candidates

With the Republican Primary Election Day less than two months away, the Heart Land Patriots continued its tradition of hosting a Meet the Candidates Night on Tuesday at Trinity Friends Church. This time, most of the candidates on hand to speak were running in elections for statewide office.

[…]

The other featured race was the three-way clash for the Ohio 1st District Senate seat. Incumbent Cliff Hite was unable to appear […]. Hite did send an email to the event attendees which was read by Rev. Keith Stoller.

In the message, […] was [Hite’s] stand on the common core curriculum, noting that he voted against the national common core, not wanting to be told how to educate students by the Federal government. However, Hite pointed out that he does support the Ohio common core curriculum which allows local school boards to accept or reject suggested materials in math and language arts.

[…]

Hite also mentioned his support of and his role in bringing the so-called Heartbeat Bill to the Ohio Senate, and his endorsement by Ohio Right To Life.

Up next, local farmer and businessman Milo Schaffner introduced himself to his hometown crowd.

[…]

[Schaffner] also shared his core beliefs with the group, including his belief in the Bible as the divine word of God, that life begins at conception, and his belief that the U.S. Constitution was written with divine guidance. Schaffner addressed his opposition to wind energy in America in answering a question about the recent payment of more than $2 million from Iberdrola Renewables to townships and school districts in the county. […]

The third candidate in the State Senate race is Corey Shankleton, a pastor from the Stryker, Ohio area. […].

Shankleton called for a return to common sense and morality in politics rather than the backdoor deals that exist today.

“I’ll be honest with you. I don’t know, at a Federal level, what can be done. Everyday I watch violations of our Constitution, of the morality of our society. We’re watching those things begin to unravel,” said Shankleton.

He stated that his own prayers for men of integrity to rise up in state government eventually led to accepting an invitation to run for the State Senate seat.

[…]

Three candidates for a Republican held seat:
(1) incumbent theocrat, hard core anti-abortionist;
(2) theocrat, far to the right of even the other two;
(3) religious leader, theocrat.

This is America, 2014.

You can assume that any definition that starts with an infinitive indicates a (v.). Accent marks aren’t really necessary; three of them are accented the same and the fourth, the noun “affect”, is (in my experience) mostly encountered in written form.

Home School Bill Removing Requirements Passes House

Home schooled children may soon no longer have to abide by State Board of Education requirements. On Tuesday the House passed SB 39, which exempts home schooled children from state educational requirements.

Sponsored by Representative John Knotwell (Republican - Herriman) in the House, the bill also allows parents to home school their children without submitting a yearly home-school affidavit with their district affirming that they are following curriculum standards.

[…]

Representative Marc Roberts (Republican - Santaquin) spoke in favor of the bill, calling it a relief for parents of home-schooled children. Roberts, who home-schools his children, spoke about the merits of home education and how it was once a more commonplace practice.

Roberts continued his statements, stating that “God gave us children,” as opposed to giving them to the state. […]

Feeling mildly homesick for Texas tonight. Not sure why. South Texas looks like this for about 2 weeks in March, which is the extent of springtime there, heh.

Getty Image

The further south you go, you see more & more nopal (prickly pear) cactus. It’s basically scrub brush—cactus, cattle, cedar & mesquite trees, patchy grass, oil fields—very similar to the Chihuahuan Desert, but without the mountains. People actually eat the nopalesoften with eggs—my mom loved them, but I was never adventurous enough with food to try them.

Getty Image

Getty Image

The oil fields stink to high heaven.

Getty Image

The ocean is different too. The Gulf water is very warm compared to the Atlantic, and the beaches are much more natural, still a bit wild, not so commercialized… or at least that’s how they used to be.

1999 South Dakota Learjet crash

On October 25, 1999, a chartered Learjet 35 was scheduled to fly from Orlando, Florida to Dallas, Texas. Early in the flight the aircraft, which was cruising at altitude on autopilot, quickly lost cabin pressure. All on board were incapacitated due to hypoxia — a lack of oxygen. The aircraft failed to make the westward turn toward Dallas over north Florida. It continued flying over the southern and midwestern United States for almost four hours and 1,500 miles (2,400 km). The plane ran out of fuel and crashed into a field near Aberdeen, South Dakota after an uncontrolled descent…

For happier aviation related news, I saw Hayao Miyazaki’s latest and final movie tonight. I highly recommend “The wind rises”. It covers the life of Jiro Horikoshi, Japan’s premier aircraft designer in the period between the world wars. It covers a lot of history (brief & with sensitivity re WW2) with plenty of Miyazaki’s trademark scenery and aviation porn. I’m an airplane geek, but think many others will like this as well.
(Look for the brief homages to his other movies in the background of many scenes. I caught allusions to “Castle in the sky”, Howl’s moving castle”, “Spirited away”, “Kiki”, and “Porco rosso”)

Now the Twitter neurotics are making a big deal about this story:

Missing Airplane Flew On for Hours
by Andy Pasztor

U.S. investigators suspect that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 stayed in the air for about four hours past the time it reached its last confirmed location, according to two people familiar with the details, raising the possibility that the plane could have flown on for hundreds of additional miles under conditions that remain murky.

Investigators SUSPECT (look that word up in the dictionary) according to TWO PEOPLE FAMILIAR blah, blah, blah.

Let’s look up Andy on Wiki.

Andy Pasztor - Journalism controversies

Burt Rutan

On February 24, 2010, Andy Pasztor wrote an article titled “Space Pioneer Burt Rutan Blasts New NASA Plan,” claiming that Burt Rutan had written a letter to Congress sharply criticizing President Obama’s plans to turn over portions of its human spaceflight program to commercial providers.[1] A couple days later Burt Rutan released a statement saying that “the WSJ chose to cherry-pick and misquote my comments to Cong Wolf.” [2]

SpaceX

Immediately following SpaceX’s inaugural launch of the Falcon 9 rocket, Andy Pasztor wrote in a WSJ article titled “SpaceX Illustrates Privatization Risk” on June 7, 2010 alleging that SpaceX claimed it would require $1 billion to build a launch escape system for its rocket, and that the company would likely require future assistance from US taxpayers.[3] When asked about this, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk responded saying:

“Andy Pasztor’s article in the Journal was, I’m sorry to say, rife with errors. He was off by a factor of ten on what it would cost SpaceX to develop a launch escape system. Also, under no circumstances would SpaceX be seeking a financing round from the taxpayers. That doesn’t make any sense.” [4]

Despite that statement by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, subsequently in 2011 and 2012, SpaceX did receive additional funding from U.S. taxpayers through NASA. In May 2011, it was revealed in a Government Accountability Office report, “Commercial Launch Vehicles: NASA Taking Measures to Manage Delays and Risks” [5] that starting in November 2011 SpaceX had, in addition to its award of $278 million,[6] been awarded $118 million for additional COTS risk reduction milestones, bringing the company’s total COTS award to $396 million. In April 2011, SpaceX was awarded $75 million [7] as a participant in NASA’s CCDev2.[8] In August 2012, NASA announced that, as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Integration Capability program, SpaceX was awarded $440 million.[9]

Heh, now look at this.

Malaysian plane sent out engine data before vanishing
17:23 11 March 2014 by Paul Marks

The missing Malaysia Airlines jet sent at least two bursts of technical data back to the airline before it disappeared, New Scientist has learned. The data may help investigators understand what went wrong with the aircraft, no trace of which has yet been found.

To aid maintenance, most airlines use the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS), which automatically collates and files four technical reports during every flight so that engineers can spot problems. These reports are sent via VHF radio or satellite at take-off, during the climb, at some point while cruising, and on landing.

Malaysia Airlines has not revealed if it has learned anything from ACARS data, or if it has any. Its eleventh media statement since the plane disappeared said: “All Malaysia Airlines aircraft are equipped with… ACARS which transmits data automatically. Nevertheless, there were no distress calls and no information was relayed.”…

This is two days before the goofy WSJ report.

94 Gus  Thu, Mar 13, 2014 12:39:33am

Under International Civil Aviation Organisation rules, such reports are normally kept secret until air investigators need them.

Monitoring systems - Rolls-Royce

With an electrical system connecting all the equipment with power, the control system controlling all the actions of the system, a monitoring system is needed to log the actions, performance and status of the components in these systems.

Monitoring systems technologies log the actions, performance an status of the components in the electrical and control systems. They collect data from various components, sub-systems or systems, which is then used to draw certain conclusions, based on algorithms programmed into the collection system. The monitoring collection system can be ground-based, while monitoring systems flying in the air, floating on the sea, or generating electricity on another continent.

100 Gus  Thu, Mar 13, 2014 12:52:02am
Acquire

Most modern large civil aircraft use an Aircraft Condition Monitoring System (ACMS) to acquire the data for EHM. This captures three types of reports:

The first are snapshots, where the sensor data listed above is captured and collected into a small report. This is carried out during take-off, during climb and once the aircraft is in cruise.

The second type is triggered by unusual engine conditions. Examples might be if an engine exceeded its TGT (Turbine Gas Temperature) limits during a take-off. These reports contain a short time-history of key parameters to enable rapid and effective trouble-shooting of the problem.

The final type is a summary, which is produced at the end of the flight. This captures information such as maximum conditions experienced during the flight, and power reductions selected during take-off and climb.

The Trent 900 is the first engine to be fitted with a dedicated Engine Monitoring Unit as well as the ACMS. This engine-mounted system places a powerful signal processing and analysis capability onto the engine. A fan -mounted EMU is shown below:

101 Gus  Thu, Mar 13, 2014 12:52:45am
Transfer

A critical aspect of the EHM system is the transfer of data from aircraft to ground. Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) digital data-link systems are used as the primary method of communication. This transmits the Aircraft Condition Monitoring System (ACMS ) reports via a VHF radio or satellite link whilst the aircraft is in-flight.

A worldwide ground network then transfers this data to the intended destination. The positive aspect of this system is its robust nature and ability to distribute information worldwide. On the other hand, the Airplane Condition Monitoring Function (ACMF) reports are limited to 3kB, hence the acquisition systems need to work within this limitation. Future systems are being deployed to increase data volumes through wireless data transmission as the aircraft approaches the gate after landing. This will enable more data to be analysed, but will not be as immediate as ACARS, where data can be assessed well before the aircraft lands again.

In the Defence business, the transfer of data is controlled by the service requirement. Some EHM data requires a rapid in-theatre response; some, such as fleet trends, has a more long-term aspect. Some of the longer-term information can wait until the engines return to the UK, although Rolls-Royce can still provide 24/7 support through a combination of deployed service engineers and the Operations Centre in Bristol.

Talking around people who don’t know the rules, though, and speaking in the vernacular of your immediate circle, can dull your past knowledge. People tend to use “lay” and “lie” interchangeably, and probably never really learned to conjugate either verb.

Chief Rabbi of Kyiv and Ukraine: There is no Ethnic or Religious Hatred in Ukraine

Kyiv, 12 March 2014 - There are no signs of anti-Semitism in Ukraine. Regardless of their origin, Ukrainians are uniting to counter a common threat, Moshe Reuven Azman, Chief Rabbi of Kyiv and Ukraine said during a briefing at the Ukraine Crisis Media Center.

‘We should draw a distinction between nationalism and Nazism. Nationalism is loving one’s own people, and Nazism is hating others. There is no anti-Semitism in Ukraine’, was Azman’s comment to the Russian propagandists’ claims about the rampage of fascism, Nazism and anti-Semitism in Ukraine.

‘There were different people at Maidan representing different parties’, said Rabbi, ‘Maidan Self-Defense provided security for the synagogue. We were given walkie-talkies so we could communicate. In return, Israel provided medical treatment to several Euromaidan activists who were injured’. (more)

Yep, got the email a few moments ago.

Nope, no renewal when our current membership expires. It was overpriced at $79 for us. Too expensive for just the shipping and only one login in the house can use the streaming.

I have no doubt though that most will suck it up & Bezos’ will laugh all the way to the bank.

What you should think of this is summed up by something along the lines of “In America in the year 2014, we are still letting religious wackadoodles censor science, and that says a whole lot about this nation.”

Even with the new price, the free shipping alone covers the cost of Prime for me — the streaming is just a bonus.

I avoid brick-and-mortar retail whenever possible unless it’s something I have to have TODAY, or it’s something like a helmet that I need to make sure fits properly. I also happen to live close to a major distro center, so 2-day shipping is more often than not 1-day shipping for me.

Stewart is a comedian. It’s yet to be proved that the NSA is looking at my data, or yours, either. If he’s following Greensnow, he’s not as bright as we think he is.

Being tapped by the CIA is an entirely different matter. Different agencies, different functions.

This is a huge country. We have agencies that spy, that investigate, that keep tabs on certain people suspected of criminal activities or terrorism. That doesn’t mean every single person—that would be an impossible job to do, or at least do right. We pass laws enabling them to do their jobs. When they do, and they do the job right, we congratulate them. When they overstep their authority, we should put a stop to it. I haven’t seen proof of that yet.

But that doesn’t mean that we should go around all paranoid because someone is talking about it. Whatever happened to having real proof before opening one’s mouth?

Nobody wakes up in the morning, stretches and takes a deep breath, and then says ‘Boy howdy, what a wonderful day to have an abortion!’ That is obvious, and yet anti-choicers keep pretending that that’s the case.

Greets and saluts from the now frigid NYC metro area. FDNY and NYPD continue searching the rubble up in Harlem and have recovered 7 bodies thus far. More than 60 injured in the explosion that blew apart two apartment buildings adjacent to a Metro North rail line.

The presumed cause is a gas leak where the gas built up until a spark set off the devastating explosion.

There’s also disturbing discrepancies over who knew what and when city and Con Ed were informed of gas smells at Harlem bldg and lack of followup.

Con Ed and City officials said initially that there were reports of gas called in just minutes before the explosion and that Con Ed was responding when the explosion occurred.

The blast at 9:31 a.m. Wednesday occurred with barely any warning — Con Edison had received a complaint of an odor of gas in the area only 18 minutes before the buildings were leveled.

Hundreds of firefighters worked overnight, using a massive claw to lift wreckage and sift through debris as heavy smoke continued to waft down E. 116th St.

But the NY Post is reporting that residents had been reporting gas smells for “years” without resolution. There’s also questions about the building integrity and whether the Department of Buildings conducted sufficient oversight.

The NTSB is also investigating, since there’s indications that gas pipeline may have failed - to see just when the reports were made, and what corrective actions, if any, were taken.

The Daily News is also reporting that investigators think a water main collapse on the gas line outside the building precipitated the collapse.

A few years back (2007), there was another gas explosion up in Harlem with injuries (no fatalities thankfully in that incident). That one didn’t involve a building collapse, but the Buildings Department has been under scrutiny for not doing enough to police construction sites and required repairs to repair defects across the city.

At this point, without the black boxes in hands of investigators, anyone’s comments online about whereabouts/what happened, is speculation. And that goes for the experts as well. They can only speculate about what happened - no facts involved, and we’re already seeing pissing contests about information control over what few bits of information we do have - when radar lost contact, any transmissions that were made by the planes before or after it lost contact, etc.

The worst part is that this just drags out the horror even longer for the families of those missing on the plane.

Chinese woman chops off alleged rapist’s penis and beats him to death with a hammer

A Chinese woman chopped off her former boyfriend’s penis with scissors and then killed him with a hammer after he raped her, a Hong Kong court heard, according to a report Tuesday.

Yeung Ki, 41, on trial in the city, has admitted killing 32-year-old piano teacher Zhou Hui on Boxing Day 2012 but denies murder, the South China Morning Post reported.

[…]

On the night of the killing, Zhou “beat her, pushed her to the floor, and slapped their daughter”, then “forcibly had sex with her”, the High Court heard, according to the newspaper.

Afterwards, she drugged him with soup laced with sleeping pills, cut off his penis and flushed it down the toilet, then when he was awakened by the pain, beat him to death with “almost uncountable” blows from a hammer, the paper reported the prosecution as saying.

According to the NYT:

In a hard-hitting report applauded by victims as a landmark in the Roman Catholic Church’s clerical sexual-abuse scandal, a United Nations committee on Wednesday called on the Vatican to remove all child abusers from its ranks, report them to law enforcement and open the church’s archives so that bishops and other officials who concealed crimes could be held accountable.

I really hope that report turns out to be a false alarm, because the Han Chinese and the Beijing government will start another series of attacks on Uyghurs in XInjiang, making them the scapegoats for the missing airliner.

Except that it didn’t have enough fuel to make it to Africa.

That was my first thought. How much fuel would they be carrying? Certainly not enough to get across the Pacific. Maybe enough to get to Guam, but there are radar pointed at that island you can be sure. So someone would have noticed a plane in the zone that wasn’t supposed to be there. How many other countries would have had to be in on it for the US to do something like that. We don’t have that many friends in that part of the world. Might have made it to Australia possibly.

re: #251 Bulworth

The FRC is saying that the UN criticizing the Vatican is Nazi-ism, etc.

It can be called hypocrisy, based on the number of times UN peacekeepers have gotten out of control and committed rape. But that’s an argument for the UN to reform, not for the RCC to do nothing. That having been said, in both cases the organization has a decent leader facing a powerful bureaucracy that is highly resistant to change. However, the greater outside support for corruption at the UN makes my believe the Roman Catholic Church is more likely to actually reform.

Like with the Czechs and the Slovaks, who didn’t “divorce” until any outstanding issues were resolved through negotiation. That’s the main reason it was so successful.

If a Czech goes to work in Slovakia, the Foreign Police (immigration authorities) will give him/her pretty much an automatic residency permit, no questions asked; same if a Slovak goes to work here in the Czech Republic. It was like that before both countries joined the EU.

Slovakia and the Czech Republic were concerned with creating a stable, viable system in their respective countries.

According to the WSJ article, the plane could have flown for another 4 to 5 hours, for an estimated range of 2000 - 2500 miles. That’s enough to reach Australia, or western India, or China (of course), among other places.

But hijackers generally make a big scene upon their arrival, or make demands while in flight. None of that happened.

All the speculation in the media, unfortunately, is spotty, contradictory and unreliable. It’s not helping at all.

I wish they’d simply say “We don’t know where the plane is. At this point we will report on other issues and news until we receive a solid report with confirmed information.” Of course, since the current LCD is tabloid level reporting they will instead just keep pumping hype, rumor, and talking heads since they have 24-hours of time to keep filled.

Pakistan is the main country the press is talking about where it could have flown to if it did fly to a discrete place. How it could do such a thing without being seen or noticed on the way there is very slim I would think.

Ukraine’s New Premier, the ‘Rabbit,’ Seems to Be in His Element

nytimes.com

KIEV, Ukraine — For three months, throughout the uprising and upheaval in Kiev, Arseniy P. Yatsenyuk was one of three political leaders who appeared regularly on stage in Independence Square, but he often seemed out of his element. A former foreign minister, economics minister, speaker of Parliament and acting central bank chief, he is more at home in boardrooms and in the corridors of power than on the barricades.

“Now, two weeks after his colleagues in Parliament named him acting prime minister — a job he called “political suicide” even before Russia invaded Crimea — Mr. Yatsenyuk, 39, is in a role that suits him better than that of street revolutionary, but that has thrust him to the center of the crisis.

“On Wednesday, he met in Washington with President Obama and other top officials to plead for economic and political assistance.”

I like how the navel piercing presents a nice, shiny ‘insert knife here’ target.

Hard to use that scope when the target is two feet or less away, chief.

Because, you know, not a whole lot of rapes occur at stand-off distances.

That long range rape detector ESP that apparently doesn’t work because most rapes/sexual assaults are by friends/acquaintances/family, and not strangers. Only a fraction of rape is carried out by someone that the victim doesn’t know. It also means that the woman with the gun would not likely be able to use it because the assailant would have access to the same gun (as in domestic partners, spouses, relatives, etc.)

Those seniors are dying off. I don’t think young people, minorities, and women give a shit about Rs any more because we’re on to their game (I include myself even though I’m a white female senior but my memory is still intact and I refuse to become complacent). The main work is GOTV for Dems among those demographics and work harder to win over boomer seniors. Hard work among those demographics got Obama elected, and we can do that with others running.

So who’s going to vote for them? Their own families? Not enough.

Unfortunately, the young don’t seem to think voting matters, just like they don’t seem to think they need to buy health insurance.

Because of this, the GOP has a couple of more shots to take over the government again. Unless the Dems manage to generate some enthusiasm during the mid term elections, 2014 isn’t looking good for them, IMO.

One of the fliers in Virginia, however, claimed that “many people have experienced the blacks firsthand” and have seen the “savagery and animalism in many of these people.” The fliers went on to say that the KKK’s mission is “exalting the Caucasian race and teaching the doctrine of white supremacy. That does not mean that we are enemies of the colored and mongrel race, but it does mean that we are organized to establish the solidarity and to realize the mission of the white race.”

Charles,
I ran Chrome’s Inspect elements function just now. Does it make sense that an Ajax query to a json db would hold up the New Comments display? I’m not up to speed on Ajax to be sure, but I suspect my Chrome is waiting for data it’s not getting somehow.

Also, the Preview function on the comment box is still not working for me. The page goes dark, and the wheelie thing spins, but the preview window never comes.

I hate to rain on everyone’s parade, but all my LGF display problems began after the Getty image embed feature went live.

Well, I’ve been testing it, and I just can’t duplicate the problem in Windows 7 with Chrome v33. Both Preview and New Comments work fine here.

If you use the Inspect Element feature and go to the console tab, are there any errors being reported that come from littlegreenfootballs.com? I’m not seeing any here. (I really suspect this is something to do with the proxies you’re going through in China.)

It’s been shown time and time again that if you actually take a critic aside and tell them the good stuff that the ACA does without mentioning the name, they support it. But as soon as you mention “Obamacare” or “Affordable Care Act,” they immediately turn against it.

Yep. ACA makes some conservatives think “Oh this is legit, hell a reasonable alternative to socialized medicine.” But then you mention who the signer/proposer of this is and they go apeshit.

For those who like guns, a reason to support the Ukraine against Russia:

Inexpensive, available 9mm ammunition from WarTak

Center Mass Firearms in Las Vegas imported a huge amount of WarTak 9mm from the Ukraine, hoping to restock their shooting range. The ammunition runs great, even in their short submachine guns. However, since no one has heard of it, nobody is buying it. When the owner of Center Mass asked me to check out the ammo to generate awareness, I was happy to help (and shoot free ammo).

The primary function of most cheap ammunition is plinking. To make sure the 9mm WarTak worked in several common guns I ran it through a Glock 17, Stingray-C (CZ-75 clone), Hi Point carbine and a SIG 239. I experienced no failures. The recoil was a little stout in the pistols, but not any more so than standard NATO spec 9mm ammo.

Accuracy was good enough for plinking, but suffering in consistency. Sometimes the groups would climb up and left when the gun heated up, other times to the right. In other words, accurate enough to stay on paper, but not on par with offerings from Federal, Hornady or Winchester ammunition.

Overall the ammo is a solid purchase for the cash-strapped and ammo-deprived shooter alike. 9mm isn’t easy to come by and many of the cheaper varieties won’t run in some guns. In my experience, WarTak ammo doesn’t run dirty, doesn’t cause failures and most importantly it’s cheap and available.

Edward Snowden looms over Pulitzer Prizes

Next month, the trustees who oversee America’s most distinguished journalistic award could face their toughest decision in at least four decades.

The issue before the Pulitzer Prize Board: Does it honor reporting by The Washington Post and The Guardian based on stolen government documents that are arguably detrimental to the national security of the United States, and which were provided by a man who many see as a traitor? Or, does it pass over what is widely viewed as the single most significant story of the year — if not the decade — for the sake of playing it safe?

Prediction: If GG et al. win, they will claim they are vindicated. If they lose, they will blame Obamabots in the librul media.

Math is hard.

It’s hard to be prosperous when you’re flooded out of your home, business, town, or city, or that your city no longer has sufficient water to drink, or your fields are now fallow because there’s no water to irrigate them, or they’ve been flooded out because of extreme weather events.

Idiots. Thinking that doing nothing is an option worth pursuing.

It’s an option that will only serve to make everyone poorer in the long run because they will lose opportunities that are preserved or created by preparing for climate change.

I guess my question about the Pulitzer is whether the story being broken drives the award, or is there something involving the quality of the journalism as well? The Snowden/NSA stuff might be a big story, but has there really been quality journalism behind how the story and its information was discovered and then reported on?

By any sort of standard regarding the latter Greenwald would fail horribly.

Brenner’s solution: more privatization.

“In a free market system parents and students are free to go where the product and results are better,” he wrote. “Common core and standardized tests under such a system will not be necessary, because the schools that fail will go out of business. Government will not be there to prop them up with more tax dollars and increased regulations. Successful schools will thrive. The free-market system works for cars, furniture, housing, restaurants, and to a lesser degree higher education, so why can’t it work for our primary education system?”

One of the fliers in Virginia, however, claimed that “many people have experienced the blacks firsthand” and have seen the “savagery and animalism in many of these people.”

Many people have experienced the people like you firsthand, Frank, and seen the savagery and animalism in many of y’all, and can quite easily say that you’re a lying, racist fucktard.

He doesn’t care. He will be able to afford to send his children to a private school that will teach what he considers a quality and properly controlled education. For everyone else he will be quite happy for the public education system to collapse into a loose system of cheap schools *without standards* since he expects that Christian- and Bible- based schools will then win out and be able to teach the poor underclass to be happy in their work as they slave for their betters since reward awaits them in the afterlife.

I’m getting very frustrated at the idiocy.

Contraception is some kinda extra coverage because woman have xtra parts?

No, the male body is not the standard by which we define health care coverage.

I don’t know how to say that in a twitter-headline grabbing kinda way.

Why does a women’s health insurance plan cover a prostate exam and viagra but not birth control?

Because when a man gets a finger up his bum, he wants to be able to have a woody about it?

(I’m pretty sure that’s in the Constitution, between “There is no rule 6” and the “No poofters” amendments.)
