My friend Durbin’s wedding was awesome. They didn’t do anything all that funky or unusual, but they’re both wonderful public speakers, as was the officiant, chose great music, and chose great other people to give speeches. His dad, who’d just gone into remission, gave a really nifty speech that didn’t mention cancer or death or anything like that at all, just talking about how awesome this woman his son was marrying was.
And those medal of honor ceremonies the other day were incredibly moving, of course.
The naturalization ceremony for my friend Eric had me grinning like an idiot. There was a lot of infectious grinning going on there.
Like pretty much else, there’s tons of boring-ass versions out there but there’s truly transcendent stuff too.

He may be onto something. There have been 17 fatalities connected with the mother of all college bonfires, that of the Texas Aggies, along with much other debauched behavior and general insanity. Need more proof? Rick “Good Hair” Perry, surely a servant of the Evil One, was once a “Red Pot.”
This is one of the 18 high priests of the Aggie cult, essentially charged with planning and coordinating all activities connected with Bonfire.
My favorite bonfire story involves the 1948 attempt by UT students to light the bonfire prematurely by firebombing it from a light plane they had rented. The plane ran out of fuel, possibly because the crew had used all their gas for Molotov cocktails, and was forced to land at Easterwood Airport in Aggie controlled territory. The plane was stripped and the wooden parts (ie most of it) were consigned to the bonfire. Alcohol was almost certainly involved.

When I was in high school, we wound up having the same guy for 3 different events, and we actually voted to have him do our graduation address the 3rd time. He told basically 3 stories, but he told them so damned well that we just enjoyed hearing him. His best story was getting kicked off the team bus after a baseball game somewhere, getting picked up 5 minutes later by some guy in a convertible with, literally, some cow horns for a hood ornament, and having the driver provide him with one of his “little green cigars.” So he gets the guy to speed up, and they pass the team bus with both of them busily sucking away on their green cigars and waving to the pissed coach up in the front seat. Funniest damned story, and perfect poetic justice.

It’s a bit like a tree falling in the forest. Today the press off and not covering the outrage on twitter. The hashtag by itself accomplishes nothing, only if the press is on duty and bored enough to cover it does it become a thing.

Turkey’s Erdogan declares victory in polls despite graft crisis
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan declared victory in local polls that had become a referendum on his rule and said he would “enter the lair” of enemies who have accused him of corruption and leaked state secrets. “They will pay for this,” he said.
That doesn’t sound good.

Are there really planets made out of cake?
If you look at the animated graphics* in the background of the BBC Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy TV series while The Book is reciting the entry for Magrathea, one can see a cutaway view of a custom-built planet with the layers labelled “Inner Core”, “Outer Core”, “Mantle”, and “Meringue”.
Close enough?

Oh, I see, he’s complaining that there isn’t any art about the horrible shit France did in various places.
Yeah, it’s true, probably. One of the main reasons for this is most of the art at the Louvre predates colonialism, and another that very few artists went out to the places where this horrible shit was going down, and another that art tended to be commissioned by the privileged classes up until really recently.
There have been, of course, lots of french novels about colonialism, and movies about French colonialism.

I’m sure Guernica does not count because he was apparently looking for artistic representations of the evils of colonialism in European art. Guernica would be categorically excluded.

The bit I’m stuck on is that there’s tons and tons of French literature and movies dealing with colonialism. One of my favorite movies, a very underrated one, en.wikipedia.org, confronts it. The title even means ‘cheated’, as in the Africans were cheated by the French.

There seems to be a restriction to “paintings on a wall” type art, which probably bakes in the observed conclusion from the start. Here I’m assuming that “paintings on a wall” art are more dependent on having wealthy patrons to commission the art work than literature/movies.

For much of the time he’s talking about, Europe was under one sort of colonial oppression or another. Rome invented the word ‘colonia’. Spain was an occupied primitive outpost exploited by the Arab world.
And don’t ask the Irish about colonial violence.

Not a painting in the Louvre, therefore not part of the author’s tourism experience.
Naturally. This author started with his conclusion firmly in mind, and then went everywhere he could to find evidence in favor of it. A better example of selection bias (statistics Sunday theme) would be hard to find.

I faced no images of the impact of the carpet-bombing on the Vietnamese villages, and no images depicting the rape of Algiers.
