CIA Admits Improper Snooping on Network Used by Senate Intelligence Committee

CIA abuses the separation of powers
US News • Views: 29,054

The New York Times has details on a statement made today by the CIA, summarizing the Inspector General’s report on the CIA’s snooping on a computer network used by the Sentate Intelligence Committee.

WASHINGTON — An internal investigation by the Central Intelligence Agency has found that its officers improperly penetrated a computer network used by the Senate Intelligence Committee to prepare its damning report on the C.I.A.’s detention and interrogation program.

The report by the agency’s inspector general found that C.I.A. officers created a fake online identity to gain access on more than one occasion to computers used by members of the committee staff, and tried to cover their movements as they rooted around the system, according to an official with knowledge of the investigation’s findings.

A statement issued Thursday morning by a C.I.A. spokesman said that John O. Brennan, the agency’s director, had apologized to the two senior members of the intelligence committee and would set up an internal accountability board to review the issue. The statement said that the board, which will be led by former Senator Evan Bayh, an Indiana Democrat, could recommend “potential disciplinary measures” and “steps to address systemic issues.”

The Department of Justice has declined to investigate this issue, but it really shouldn’t stop here. It’s an outrageous misuse of the CIA’s powers, and CIA head John Brennan basically lied outright when asked a direct question about the allegations made by Sen. Dianne Feinstein. David Corn asks the next question: Should Obama Fire His CIA Chief for Misleading the Public About the Senate Spying Scandal?

UPDATE at 7/31/14 2:16:00 pm by Charles Johnson

There’s one detail that is being generally ignored in most of the reports so far: the CIA actually supplied the computers and operated the network the Senate Intelligence Committee was using, so suggesting this involved “hacking” is completely off-base.

But that doesn’t change the fact that it was still an egregious violation of the Senate’s privacy.

That they were doing it because the Senate was exercising oversight on the CIA makes it extremely reprehensible.

Yes

Well…one question is whether or not he knew about this violation of the Senate committee’s secure computers when he made the statement denying it.

If so then he absolutely must be removed from office.

If he was unaware of the violation then it depends on why he did not.

Without any publicly available details on what level of the agency this was approved at, or if it was approved at all, I can’t call for his termination yet. If it was something that he should have been aware of but did not due to lax oversight of his people then sure, can him. If it was a case of a couple of people playing cowboy on their own initiative then I don’t believe it should necessitate the beheading of the agency.

Obviously, this cow’s spots were put there by a designer. But our question for evolutionists is this: If you agree that the cow’s spots are designed, why won’t you agree that the actual cow - which is so much more complex than the arrangement of its spots - was designed as well?

Great way to put pressure on Boehner. Without any Dem defections and with them all in attendance to vote “Nay,” he’s left with no wiggle room. The CIA Just Admitted That It Spied on the US Senate | VICE News

Earlier this month, the CIA’s own internal watchdog wrapped up a probe into the matter, and it turns out Brennan apparently misjudged the scope of reason — the agency’s inspector general, David Buckley, concluded that the CIA hacked into Senate staffers’ computers and spied on them.

That’s just wrong. Senate Intel Committee members were given access to the CIA’s RDINet network. The CIA did not “hack into Senate staffers’ computers” - that’s completely false.

Thing is, if you actually asked him that question, his response would probably be that, by standing in the way of government, he’s made people’s lives “better.” He doesn’t see what he’s doing as destructive or hurtful, because (say it with me, class) “I’ve got mine!”

“The exact cause of the gas leaks is not clear, but reports say the blasts were caused by ruptured pipelines.

“Images from the scene show major fires, cars overturned and significant damage to roads and buildings.

“Dozens of those injured by the blasts were taken to hospitals for treatment, Taiwan’s fire agency said.”

I’m about as fond of Greenwald as I am of getting a ruptured hemorrhoid. But I do think that a reduction in arms donations wouldn’t be a bad thing…or even just asking Israel to pay up front for the arms we send them. I know it’s only a few billion a year, but we end up paying that as taxpayers. Additionally, it might encourage a more diplomatic approach to dealing with one’s neighbors. Having the biggest dick and hammer makes it easy to pound nails/extinguish your enemies, but it isn’t scalable in the long run.

Besides…it’s the principle of the matter. Think how much better their self esteem would be if they didn’t have to sit on Uncle Sam’s lap every time they wanted a missile defense system.

Charlie Pierce is once again in fine form with regards to the present GOTP crisis:

There were those of us who thought that when Eric Cantor was defeated in his primary for re-election that he would leave office without ever telling John Boehner the location of the Mason Jar in which Cantor had buried the Speaker’s balls. There were those of us who thought that this would be like one of those adventure novels in which the last man who knows the secret dies unexpectedly without ever having passed it along. There were those of us who thought maybe Dan Brown could one day get a novel out of the search for Boehner’s balls. But we needn’t have been so concerned. Cantor did his duty to posterity. He passed along the secret of where the Mason Jar is buried. He passed it along to Ted Cruz.

I think Spider Island.

And yeah, they’re all on youtube, often in pretty good quality. The old ‘circulate the tapes’ philosophy of MST3k still going strong.

BTW, I finally found out what my late son had been hiding from the family for the last few months before his death. He had undergone a stent insertion about 2 yrs ago and was suffering arryhthmia and had a cardiac arrest in my living room on Easter morning, and was put on life support for the next 5 days.

We got a copy of his death certificate and the primary cause of death was ventricular fibrillation, with ischemic cardiomyopathy”, the latter being present for 6 months previously.

I hope he recovers, but this is the wife of that doctor…in spite of the extremely science-based treatment he is receiving.

Wife of Dr. Kent Brantly, US doctor with Ebola: ‘Thank you to our good friends and thousands more who have been in constant prayer and fasting for Kent’s deliverance from this disease’; ‘I remain hopeful and believing that Kent will be healed’ - statement via @NBCNews
end of alert

I just don’t get that.

I’m not going to endorse the efficacy of prayer, but as I understand it, the best available medical treatment for Ebola is “treat symptoms as possible and hope the patient doesn’t die”.

So this isn’t something that is categorically stupid, like praying in relation to an appendicitis case.

Mrs. J has been going on several 1-3 day “Wild Women Weekends” every year for at least 15 years, and has twice gone to visit her Dad in Florida without us.

For a while, I worried that the fact that I was okay with her not being around meant something, but it’s really just who we are, and knowing each other for 38 years, and spending the first 12 years of that in an on-again-off again relationship where we sometimes lived thousands of miles away. I think it’s given us the feeling that we’re destined to be together, so brief times apart don’t bother us.

What a bastard Mr. Taylor is.

While the amount of money to be paid to illegal aliens at the Karnes City facility is small [$3 for four hours of work] and well below the federal minimum wage, it is still a grave insult to Americans and legal immigrants to pay illegal aliens to stay in the United States on top of giving them better housing and amenities than America’s poor families.

And it still looks like jail to me.

They mention relaunching after they learn how to make it “more secure”. My question is how do you secure a public site from people who want to post content (for humor or any other reason) that you don’t want?

The real question is how do you secure a public site when the vast majority of computer people support your opponent?

Seriously, I live in one of the reddest states in the country, and out of every single sysadmin and programmer I know in the area, only one isn’t a Democrat. (She’s an independent.)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was at a Sooper Sekrit Liberal Dem Sysadmin meeting where they re-affirmed their vow to destroy all conservative internet sites ever. Because that’s what they do.

The Supreme court there ruled in favor in Gov. Walkers restrictions on collective bargaining. It also upheld the new voter I.D. requirements.

The only good news is that it did not overturn the same-sex registry law that…

gives same-sex couples the right to hospital visits, family medical leave to care for a stricken partner, health benefits under a partner’s insurance and the right to inherit assets when a partner dies.

That’s not the point. The point is to MENTION cable TV and food, medical, and dental, and get the wingnuts imagining this is all like a fully comped weekend in Vegas, and not a cut above prison.

You give them food, because you can’t reasonably starve them. You give them healthy food, because it’s cheaper in the long run when they don’t get sick as much.

You give them medical and dental because A) they’re in our care, and B) you don’t want disease running rampant through the population.

You give them Television, because they have to spend their time somehow, and distraction is better than destruction.

You give them computers with internet access because that’s how news is transmitted these days.

Mostly you provide these things because these people are in our care, and we are legally prohibited from simply chucking them back over the border, and it’s not against the law to seek asylum.

And if they can’t see that, it’s because they’re a bunch of xenophobic sadists.

Funny how Kristinn Taylor calls it a “beauty parlor” in his article and then further down cites his source for this as…

My San Antonio reported the facility will also have a hair salon and flat screen TVs for the illegal aliens.

Which by the way is a “page not found” link.

So looking on My San Antonio I found the article to which he is obviously referring…
mysanantonio.com

Which says not one word about either a beauty parlor or a hair salon*.

It is a detention facility which means that, YES, it will have a barber area to cut peoples hair, they all do. But calling it a beauty parlor or even a hair salon is just a baldfaced lie.

*Edit: My San Antonio does say hair salon in the first paragraph, sorry, I missed it while searching farther down the article where all the other descriptive stuff about the facility is. I’ll bet good money that it is nothing more than a good old fashioned womens prison barber shop though.

It’s more than that. As the article I linked to a couple of days ago noted, the people calling themselves conservatives regard capitalism as an ethical system, one that picks winners and losers.

However, cognitive linguist Anat Shenker-Osorio, author of “Don’t Buy It: The Trouble With Talking Nonsense About the Economy,” told Salon there’s a very direct connection between social and economic conservatism, based on their moral outlook. Two things stand out about how conservatives talk about economy, Osorio said, based on several years of intensive observation and analysis. First is the “the tendency to compare it to something natural — a body or the weather or moving liquid,” she said. “But the other idea undergirding their worldview, and thus shaping perceptions of poverty, riches, inequality and desirable economic policy, is the idea that the economy exists for a specific purpose: to reward the good and punish the bad. It’s a moral arbiter; simply having great riches indicates you deserve them because the economy loves you the best. Thus, it follows that poor people deserve to be poor and we can know this because they’re poor.”

It’s, in my opinion, Calvinism dressed up in pseudo-economic language.

ETA: Oop. I just saw the picture and thought it was the original, non-satirical picture. My bad.

Point still stands though.

Just talked to my RWNJ relative, who, of course, thinks they should just “turn all 100,000 of them around at the border” and thinks things are just terrible, except for the stock market, and it’s welfare cheats (and,of course, Obama) that are ruining the country and that Mitt should be the Rep. candidate in 2016, and Scott Brown isn’t dumb, but he is boring, and Elizabeth Warren is a phony and a liar, and on and on.

He did admit that his team has nobody to run in 2016, other than his hero, Mitt—who he thinks is a truly brilliant man and would be an exceptional president.

And now I am going to go drink mass quantities of amber-colored liquid to recover from that conversation.

And “all you can eat” meals—does that mean they’re feeding them buffet-style? All you can eat of what exactly? And why would this be so distressing to the RWNJs?

One sad part about this is that your RWNJ relative is relatively sane (for a RWNJ). The Bachmann supporters may no longer be capable of communicating with others.

Pretty much all of this RWNJ crap we’re seeing these days is inevitable once “greed is good” and the prosperity gospel (i.e., Calvinism for the 21st century) is accepted.

I predict the next 10-20 years will see blatant social darwinism in the US hard right, as well as the start of their campaign to rehabilitate eugenics.

WaPo: (October 15, 2013)

In the past five years, Homeland Security officials have jailed record numbers of immigrants, driven by a little-known congressional directive known on Capitol Hill as the “bed mandate.”

The policy requires U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, to keep an average of 34,000 detainees per day in its custody, a quota that has steadily risen since it was established in 2006 by conservative lawmakers who insisted that the agency wasn’t doing enough to deport unlawful immigrants.
…………
Some of the additional money provided by Congress will be spent filling beds at places such as Karnes County Civil Detention Center, which opened in Texas last year. It holds more than 600 detainees. The low-security facility was built and operated on the government’s behalf by a private contractor, the GEO Group.

Congress’s expanding detention goals have been a boon to the contractors, especially Florida-based GEO Group and Tennessee-based Corrections Corporation of America. The two companies have won hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of ICE contracts in recent years while lobbying Congress on immigration enforcement issues.

I remember back in the Bad Old Days at LGF when a, mostly, Israeli cohort of Lizards supported the idea of “Transport”, in which Palestinians would would be forcibly chucked out of Judea. One such proponent was Ben Hur, who, when it was pointed out that this sounded a lot like ethnic cleansing, didn’t take it well.

The people barking about these women and kids are not much different.

Let’s do a thought experiment: What would happen if these women and children *were* forcibly repatriated to their home countries. Would these people STFU and STFD? Would GeoGroup enjoy their contracts being cancelled and having to lay off their staff because they had been made redundant?

And would the gaspers then suggest that those facilities be filled with Queers and Atheists as next steps? These are not rational thinking humans.

Here’s some more details. The supposed spying consisted principally of logging who was accessing what documents on these computers. Anybody remember that guy Snowden? The authority to decide what if anything to make public on the report on torture or anything else, resides with congress and not individual staffers who might be tempted to pull a Snowden. The CIA should have told them in advance what they were being logged.
