John Cook Leaving Greenwald’s “The Intercept” - Another High Profile Bail-Out

Geronimo
Media • Views: 36,631

John CookLess than two weeks after Matt Taibbi’s sudden departure, today we learn of another high-profile bail-out from Glenn Greenwald’s The Intercept: John Cook Is Leaving the Intercept to Return to Gawker at the End of the Year.

Greenwald’s post about Cook’s departure is empty by-the-numbers PR-speak, revealing nothing. Which is odd for a company supposed to be dedicated to a new radical kind of transparency. Reading between the lines, though (“my decision to leave was painful… the last year hasn’t been easy…”), it sounds like this was a bit of a nightmare job.

But didn’t John Cook just put his byline on a piece at The Intercept about Taibbi’s resignation, saying all the problems had been worked out and everything was fine?

Greenwald still insists that financier Pierre Omidyar does not want to exert editorial control, of course — but it doesn’t exactly look good when your editor in chief suddenly bails out.

Omidyar is probably crying into his wine glass over the money he’s wasted on this failed project.

My best guess is that most of the people he is hiring come from a liberal / progressive background, and they are discovering that Glenn is so far left that he’s really radical right.

Glenn is where the wingnuts and moonbat converge. He is the perfect wingbat.

Speaking of which, can we change the “moonbats” category for pages to “dudebros”? I don’t know why Code Pink and PETA should have their own category when we hardly ever talk about them any more.

The moonbats are still out there. One more Air Force ground crew goes to Baghdad and they’ll get louder. They’ll be out in force if there’s any real challenge to HRC.

I do think the Democrats could benefit from some new leadership. I know it sounds silly but I guess that’s part of the reason I’m not enthused by Hillary. I know it’s shallow but if Hillary is to become president, we could potentially have three over 70 year olds leading the party in the House, Senate, and WH. I just don’t like the optics of that for a party that promotes itself as the party of change. I hope I am not coming off as ageist but the optics do matter for something. Furthermore all three have been around for a very long time. I think Pelosi and Reid were both elected to office the year I was born.

I was enthused about Hillary this time around—I contributed generously to Obama in 2008. I’ve cooled a bit lately. Will probably still support her given what I think is the relative lack of depth on the Dem presidential bench.

House and Senate could surely use new leadership, though, at the least.

Also, you can now include images in your comments that are “floated” left or right, so that the text flows around them. Previously they were always centered on their own line, separate from the text. It looks something like this.

I’m 66 and I think that hauling out these retreads is a colossal mistake if only for the reason that we’re counting on younger voters. If any of them were liberal firebrands like the late Ted Kennedy then fine, but none of them are even close. If the leadership of both parties is composed of superannuated White people then it’s difficult to avoid the perception that we’re all selling the same shit just in different cans.

Right. I mean I think part of the reason why Obama resonated so well initially with many younger voters was his youth and enthusiasm. Hillary and I like her bear in mind seems to see the presidency like I feel Mitt Romney does, a resume item. We do need more liberal firebrands in the leadership though. There was a time that it looked like Pelosi could be that in the House but it wasn’t the case. And Reid has never been a liberal.

What the Democrats need is more people on their roster who say “I’m a liberal, I’m proud to be one, and I don’t care what the right says about liberalism, it is an admirable ideology.” Can’t stand the Republicans but the Republicans who have risen in recent years have been unapologetic in their views.

These are Robert Reich’s suggestions for issues for HRC:

His suggested platform includes some ideas Clinton already supports (paid family and medical leave, increasing the minimum wage, reforming student debt), some she might come out for (a tax hike on the top sliver of income earners), and some she’s unlikely to ever endorse (reinstating the Glass-Steagall banking regulation).

85 HappyWarrior  Nov 13, 2014 11:14:17am

I think for me with Hillary it’s that I have some genuine Clinton fatigue. I had it in 2008 when she ran against then Senator Obama and I have it now after she’s served her time as SoS. I don’t hate her but not excited at all about her being the Dem frontrunner and presumed nominee. I feel the Democrats do better when they have candidates that are fresh like Obama and interestingly, Hillary’s husband. I don’t want the Democrats falling into the trap that the Republicans do of going “next in line.”.But Hillary unfortunately for anyone who goes up against her has a lot of rank and file Dems who adore her and a lot of powerful types who also do. I just hope if she’s the nominee she surrounds herself with good people. I loved the Biden VP pick for Obama so much that I’d happily support Joe for president with all his warts and I used to find Joe Biden arrogant and off-putting but I’ve grown to really like the man.

That’s been one of my big issues all along with HRC. She needs a U-Haul hitched to her butt to drag all the baggage she’s carrying. Her celebrity overshadows any policy issues making a campaign a freaking nightmare of lunacy.

re: #80 Skip Intro

These are Robert Reich’s suggestions for issues for HRC:

His suggested platform includes some ideas Clinton already supports (paid family and medical leave, increasing the minimum wage, reforming student debt), some she might come out for (a tax hike on the top sliver of income earners), and some she’s unlikely to ever endorse (reinstating the Glass-Steagall banking regulation).

If this is all she’s got, why bother running at all? Meek isn’t going to cut it in 2016 against the big GOP Clown Car of Crazy.

If I got to pick, I’d have Reich or Warren for President, but not for nominee. (Unless HRC doesn’t run.) When I’m feeling evil, I want Rahm Emanuel.

First person I ever voted for actually to tell you the truth since I just missed the 2004 election and Virginia’s governor elections are the year after presidential ones and Tim was of course at the top of the ballot. Merely “Not the Republican” isn’t going to be enough this time around. The tide is running against the Democrats despite every shitty thing the Republicans have done over the past few years. If we run a lackluster candidate many of the same voters who sat on their hands in the recent midterms will do so in 2016 for the same reasons.

Definitely and don’t get me wrong. Hillary’s not without her strengths. She’s very intelligent and well informed on domestic and international issues. And I do think it’s time for a woman president but otoh I do think the Democrats need to do some creative thinking somewhat too. I guess as I said, I do have some genuine Clinton fatigue which may color my attitude about her. Now that said, she’d be better than any of the Republican candidates easily. There’s no doubt about that at all.

Precisely. Honestly though, Hillary’s a lightening rod. People seem to love her or hate her. What the Democrats pushing her I think ignore is that she may get a large number of Democrats out for her but she could equally inspire a large number of Republicans who hate her and her husband and have for over 20 years now. I think Clinton fatigue is a genuine issue and if she’s the nominee, I hope I am wrong.

I mean there was the stupid stuff like “ZOMG AL GORE CLAIMED TO HAVE INVENTED THE INTERNET” but the attacks on Kerry’s service were disgusting. Voters learned their lesson with the Rand Paul debacle; there was some sort of Operation Chaos thing happening during that primary because everybody in the state likes Jack Conway, a democrat. Yep. Kentuckians, for the most part, really do not like Rand.
I just hope there’s a good candidate available by then (read: not Grimes). With any luck, Jack Conway will not be available because he will be our next governor.

In any event, Rand is going to have to choose between running for re-election or for President because he can’t do both at the same time and it’s looking like a pretty good bet that our state legislature isn’t going to change the existing law to accommodate that.

Investigators think a high-pressure water line ruptured. When that water line ruptured, about 2,500 to 3,500 PSI came out. The cause of that rupture is unknown at this time.

Question for you, Sleuth. Would Rand have to give up running for his Senate seat if he merely decides to run for President or only if he gets the nomination?

The law says someone’s name can’t appear in more than one place on the ballot.
So, Rand Paul has until that particular primary to make up his mind which office he wants to pursue.
I suspect the gray area will be: is it the date he actually files to appear on the primary ballot, which is sometime in January of that particular year, or the actual physical ballots being printed that triggers the law.
My guess is the former.

I think much of this cowardice is because big money has enough power within the (D) party to ensure that the (D) establishment is corporate.

Although the minimum wage should be raised, having that as the only apparent economic (D) policy initiative is a textbook example of begging for scraps from the oligarchy. More substantive policy proposals on economic issues are doubtless DOA within the (D) establishment.

According to an email published on the website UFOSightingsDaily - which does a regular trade in alien sightings - this mission is part of a European Space Agency and Nasa cover-up to disguise the comet’s true alien nature. It states: “Do not think for ONE MOMENT that a space agency would suddenly decide to spend billions of dollars to build and send a spacecraft on a 12-year journey to simply take some close-up images of a randomly picked out comet floating in space.”

Gee, who would have thunk that Putin’s trying to distract his people from the crappy economy and fact that sagging oil prices are having a bad outcome on his oligopoly. That might result in unintended consequences - namely mid-air collisions that no one wants.

Yes, this would be my position. I am not fond of the EC honestly as a whole but if we’re going to have it, it should be by who gets more votes in the state. The idea to split is GOP gamesmanship to somehow win states that they’ve actually lost. They tried doing this in Virginia after Obama beat Romney. It would have been absurd. Romney got nearly 150,000 less votes than Obama here yet had the law passed. He would have gotten 8 EVs to Obama’s 3. To me it’s a tact admission by GOP legislators that their party can’t win legitimately.

Yep that’s what this is. Gerrymandering by another name. I would love to see the media ask these guys why they think someone who gets considerably less votes than the other should be entitled to more EVs but I am not holding my breath.

No, the reason that Obama isn’t able to get anything done is because he faces an obstructionist party that wants to do nothing more than impeach the president over a policy choice - passing a duly enacted law that was largely upheld by the Supreme Court (Obamacare), and for trying to keep the economy going all while the GOP shoots down every attempt to provide stimulus - UI, minimum wage hikes, infrastructure spending, etc.

But blame it on his golf swing? Yeah, that’s the ticket.

This is why I hate the media. Yeah golf is why Obama’s had problems not yeah the whole obstructionist party that expects him to sign a repeal of his signature legislative accomplishment that he lost the House over. And one filled with members that treat him with utter contempt. It’d be nice if someone in the MSM called out the GOP for the obstructionist shits they are but they won’t. Gotta sell that “both sides just as bad” meme that readers love to eat up.

Right, it’s a party that frankly knows the long game demographics don’t favor it so they try anything in the book to stay it off. It’s gonna burn them when the long game eventually becomes the present and their base won’t be able to win them any elections. I think they already wounded themselves substantially in the presidential election game.

Fact is a Republican hasn’t won Michigan since HW did in 88. Really all these proportional EV attempts are one thing and one thing only. A Republican desperation attempt to somehow “win” states that they’ve been losing. They know I think that their policies are too repugnant to most of the population and that they could never win a state like Michigan honestly in a presidential election so they resort to this. It’s not a coincidence that all the states they’re trying this crap in are blue or purple states that have strong urban centers that go Democratic.

CHARLESTON, w.va. (WSAZ) — The former chief of Massey Energy has been indicted in connection with the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster where 29 miners died in April 2010.

The 47 page indictment was filed on Thursday.

Blankenship was indicted by a federal grand jury on four counts.

He faces 31 years in prison.

It would be completely constitutional for a GOP-ruled blue state to simply give all its electoral votes to the (R) candidate in 2016 as the outcome of a vote in the state legislature.

Of course, this would be a power-grab that is probably too brazen, even for this GOP. If nothing else, it would likely shock the media out of their complacency, which would be a disaster for the GOP.

Guess the you’ve never read the Democrat’s Manual, 2004 Revised Version:

Section iii
All Democrats are expected to stand up at all times for the principles of their party. The only exceptions to this are:
1) If it’s inconvenient
2) If it would cost them campaign contributions
3) They’re afraid of something or someone

Updated in 2008 to include:

The Lieberman codicil

You may endorse a candidate of the opposing party, campaign with said candidate, speak at the opposing party’s convention AND retain your desired committee chairmanship, so long as:

1. We have even a slight fear you might jump parties
2. It would imply that the party is not “unified”
3. You say sorry/not sorry

IT’S A States Rights Thing.

back from when many considered the US to be a CONfederation.

Many still do. They hate the outcome of the Civil War and the 14th Amendment. They do not see us as a nation, but a collection of Sovereign States. Any attempt to change that, to create efficiency or rationality in our laws is COMMUNISM!!!!!

Whining about direct election of Senators is RWNJ ‘thought’ on this subject. I’ve never seen a sensible argument for why one would prefer US Senators to be named by state legislatures.

The real estate market collapsed in 2008, and in September of this year Pope Francis announced that Bishop Blase Cupich would be Chicago’s next archbishop. On November 18, 2014 upon his installation as the leader of the country’s third largest Roman Catholic diocese, for the first time in nearly 130 years, the Archbishop of Chicago will not be living at 1555 N. State Parkway and will instead reside in a small apartment in the rectory of Holy Name Cathedral. While the mansion is used for special gatherings and events, a committee of clergy and lay members will report to the archbishop who will decide on the house’s fate within the Chicago church.

Hehehehe, learn something new every day:

SS Kaiser Wilhelm II

She was seized by the U.S. Government when it declared war on Germany on 6 April 1917, and work soon began to repair her machinery, sabotaged earlier by a German caretaker crew, and otherwise prepare the ship for use as a transport. While this work progressed, she was employed as a barracks ship at the New York Navy Yard.

The U.S. Navy placed the ship in commission as USS Kaiser Wilhelm II (ID-3004) in late August 1917. Her name was changed to Agamemnon at the beginning of September and active war work commenced at the end of October, when she left for her first troopship voyage to France.

USS Agamemnon

Cool name for a ship. I guess we don’t name our ships names like that anymore.

Awesome story about the name:

In Greek mythology, Agamemnon (/æɡəˈmɛmnɒn/; Greek: Ἀγαμέμνων from *Ἀγαμέδμων (from ἄγαν, “very much” and μέδομαι, “think on”),[1] “very steadfast”) was the son of king Atreus and queen Aerope of Mycenae, the brother of Menelaus, the husband of Clytemnestra and the father of Iphigenia, Electra or Laodike (Λαοδίκη), Orestes and Chrysothemis.[2] Mythical legends make him the king of Mycenae or Argos, thought to be different names for the same area. When Helen, the wife of Menelaus, was abducted by Paris of Troy, Agamemnon commanded the united Greek armed forces in the ensuing Trojan War.

Upon Agamemnon’s return from Troy, he was murdered (according to the oldest surviving account, Odyssey 11.409-11) by Aegisthus, the lover of his wife, Clytemnestra. In old versions of the story, “[t]he scene of the murder, when it is specified, is usually the house of Aegisthus, who has not taken up residence in Agamemnon’s palace, and it involves an ambush and the deaths of Agamemnon’s followers too”.[3] In some later versions Clytemnestra herself does the killing, or they do it together, in his own home.

At 8PM last night, cyclists in the Dutch town of Nuenen were finally able to ride on a bike path that’s been in the making for months. What took so long? This particular bike path represents the product of a collaboration between a designer and a construction company who want to build smarter, more efficient roads. Like this one, which glows.

The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde bike path (Nuenen is the hometown of Van Gogh and the city commissioned the path as a tribute) is coated in light-emitting paint and embedded with small, mosaic-like LEDs that suck power from a nearby solar array. Charging all day, the path glows nearly all night. When it goes out—or when clouds prevent the array from charging—an auxiliary power can feed it light.

CBS News said the patient was a surgeon infected with the virus while treating victims in Sierra Leone, one of the hardest-hit areas of West Africa. Earlier, NBC affiliate WOWT-TV said the unidentified patient would arrive this weekend.

The university would not confirm the reports, saying in a written statement that the staff has “been in a state of readiness” to treat Ebola patients since August, when the State Department visited its Biocontainment Unit, the nation’s largest.

Bryan’s making a total ass of himself, again.

Tomorrow, for the first time, the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., will host a Muslim prayer service and Bryan Fischer is predictably outraged, urging his listeners to call the cathedral and complain that allowing this prayer service to take place violates the Ten Commandments.

On his radio program today, Fischer gave out the cathedral’s phone number and encouraged his listeners to call and voice their opposition by complaining that the prayer service is really an effort to convert the cathedral into a mosque and is in violation of the very first of the Ten Commandments.

“This is one of the Ten Commandments,” Fischer said. “You shall have no other gods before me. Allah is another god. The Bible says you, as a nation, shall have no other gods before me … Make your objections known, that you object to the National Cathedral being turned into a mosque. That was not the purpose for which it was built. The purpose for which it was built is to worship the God that made America great and you object to it being used to worship a god of a completely different religion”:

Because the ten commandments are the law of the land in the US. Bryan might want to check with his pals who are passing laws forbidding foreign religious laws from being followed in the US.

Whining about direct election of Senators is RWNJ ‘thought’ on this subject. I’ve never seen a sensible argument for why one would prefer US Senators to be named by state legislatures.

If state legislatures get to name them, then they will be more conservative. That’s why Republicans want to do it.

I’d say it’s because it’s cheaper to buy a senator than an election.

VW to Allow Labor Groups to Represent Workers at Chattanooga Plant

Volkswagen announced a new policy on Wednesday that was likely to allow several labor groups, including the United Automobile Workers, to represent employees at the company’s Chattanooga, Tenn., plant.

The U.A.W. applauded the move because it would mean partial recognition of the union and regular discussions between management and the U.A.W., and perhaps other labor groups as well. For years, the union has been straining to get a foothold in any of the foreign-owned auto plants in the South.

But VW’s new policy stops short of the U.A.W.’s ultimate goal of being the exclusive union and bargaining agent for the plant’s workers.

US putting fake cell towers in planes to spy on people, report says

The U.S. Department of Justice is putting devices that emulate cellphone towers in Cessna aircraft and flying them around the country to track the locations of cellphones, a practice that targets criminal suspects but may also affect thousands of U.S. citizens, according to a news report Thursday.

The program is run by the DOJ’s U.S. Marshals Service and has been in operation since at least 2007, according to the report in the Wall Street Journal, which cited two unnamed sources. The aircraft are flown out of at least five metropolitan-area airports and can cover most of the U.S. population, it said.

I figured that. Upgrading to juice brakes was common as soon as there were enough junked ‘40 Fords to provide them. Same with replacing the friction shocks with hydraulics. Newer is definitely better for nearly anything hidden by sheet metal.

Oddly enough, there was a period during the late Forties/Early Fifties when the cool thing to do was to junk the top shift trans and replace it with one that used a column shift. That was one of the things that made finding an original trans for my 51’ Ford panel truck an odyssey.

The Sherman was a more efficient tank than the Panther? Huh?

The Sherman had only two things going for it; numbers and mechanical reliability. To the Panthers all those Shermans were a ‘target rich environment’ not outnumbered. Even the Firefly couldn’t quite match the Panther.
