It takes a massive amount of pretzel logic to deny that slavery was the root cause of the Civil War.

“States’ rights” is a canard. The Confederates argued that states had the right to decide who was human and who wasn’t, and who could own who. The fact that people refuse to admit this is telling.

The American Civil War was about slavery.

From the Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union issued on December 24, 1860 by the government of South Carolina:

The same article of the Constitution stipulates also for rendition by the several States of fugitives from justice from the other States.

The General Government, as the common agent, passed laws to carry into effect these stipulations of the States. For many years these laws were executed. But an increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery, has led to a disregard of their obligations, and the laws of the General Government have ceased to effect the objects of the Constitution. The States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa, have enacted laws which either nullify the Acts of Congress or render useless any attempt to execute them. In many of these States the fugitive is discharged from service or labor claimed, and in none of them has the State Government complied with the stipulation made in the Constitution. The State of New Jersey, at an early day, passed a law in conformity with her constitutional obligation; but the current of anti-slavery feeling has led her more recently to enact laws which render inoperative the remedies provided by her own law and by the laws of Congress. In the State of New York even the right of transit for a slave has been denied by her tribunals; and the States of Ohio and Iowa have refused to surrender to justice fugitives charged with murder, and with inciting servile insurrection in the State of Virginia. Thus the constituted compact has been deliberately broken and disregarded by the non-slaveholding States, and the consequence follows that South Carolina is released from her obligation.

This is the money quote. The Civil War wasn’t over slavery where it already existed. The original 13th Amendment, passed by both houses, already would have guaranteed that in perpetuity. It was about extension of slavery into the territories.

Particularly, it was about allowing the population of a territory to decide, on petitioning for statehood, whether to be a slave or free state, even if they were south of the Missouri Compromise line. (The infamous Dred Scott decision also included, as a throwaway line, the determination that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional to begin with.) The slave states were all up in arms about “squatter sovereignty” and how they should never be excluded anywhere.

How “squatter sovereignty” (bad) differs from “states rights” (good) has always remained unexplained.

Indeed. As applied (i.e. for slavery and for Jim Crow), ‘states rights’ arguments have always been total bullshit.

The fact that slavery in the territories and in new states was the most critical issue is the decisive evidence. The pro-slavery forces had dominated the Federal government since the founding, and the prospect of losing that domination was enough to make them rebel.

RUNNING WITH RIFLES update. The trick to surviving as a Private seems to be finding cover, figuring out cover sightlines, and setting up crouch and prone as toggles instead of leaving them buttons you have to keep held down. Then you just find an area where the enemy Graycollars or Brownpants (!) tend to cluster and hitting them from prone until you level up. Grenades are a mixed bag and you should use them sparingly until you figure out what’s in range and how they’re likely to bounce off of rocks, trees and walls, since the standard Classic mode punishes you heavily for mass fratricide. Bazookas are doubly dangerous this way, you will slaughter the shit out of your own guys until you figure this out. Also, since the game gives you no reasonable combat tutorial it helps to read this.

After an embarrassing amount of time, and once you make it to Corporal the game gets a lot more interesting, by then you will have figured out just enough about how shit works to stop wondering if you’re actually retarded and nobody told you. I can only imagine that in this way (and this way only) it’s relatively faithful to the real world military experience.

True this: but another angle (which the Slave Power immediately moved to extrapolate from the Dred Scott decision) was that no Federal, State or local law - enforceable by NO Federal, State or local agency whatsoever - could interfere with the “property rights” of chattel slavery anywhere in the entire country - States or Territories. It was seen (by both sides) as a legal means to erase the distinction between “slave states” and “free states”, in effect making ALL the United States “slave states” in some degree. Just another reason to piss people off….

Well, it’s certainly true that they were in danger of becoming second-class citizens. The reason is because chattel slavery could not hope to compete with industrialization, but there was so much money wrapped up in slaves and plantations that the South couldn’t afford to just end it all. When it began to look like abolitionism, even gradually phased in, would rob them of their “property rights” by freeing all those slaves, the South felt it had no choice but to defend its “way of life.”

Yet, it was that poor level of industrialization and over-reliance on slave labor that proved to be the South’s undoing. It had to rely upon Britain and France for much of the materiel necessary to wage war, and once the Union blockade squeezed down upon Southern ports, the countdown to the defeat of their “cause” began to speed up.

Those tented revival meetings were still going strong when I was in South Texas in the late Sixties/Early Seventies. Having read Elmer Gantry I attended whenever they came through town. It was eye opening.

In the South the share of those born outside America (which was low to begin with) actually fell after the civil war. New migrants moved west or north but rarely south. Because of this, southern churches could hold more traditional views without challenge.

It’s still true, though there’s still a big difference between the South and the rest of the country. Only the big cities in the South see lots of foreign citizens, and those also tend to be the Democratic parts of the states.

I love this guy’s work.

He’s quite good as an illustrator, but imho like most politically engaged artists his politics is strictly preaching to the choir and imho not that original. As an artist/illustrator meself, I felt the same way about Sue Coe back in the eighties and alas as talented as she is she still paints the same way she did then. No growth. An artists has to grow. It’s a tricky thing, mixing art & politics and how they can date so quickly, though funnily enough my favorite artist is William Hogart, who was all about politics.

Of course, if Francisco Goya heard me say that he’d probably punch me square on la nariz.

One lesson from the War of the Rebellion, which I’ve mentioned before but about which I really think we need to keep reminding ourselves, is how the Confederacy got so many poor white men, who couldn’t afford slaves, to fight for the rich and powerful.

It’s a theme that is repeated today in our politics.

Here’s the formula for getting poor bastards to die for you: create a dynamic where those who really have fewer choices in life are led to believe they would be better off if only ((insert boogeyman here)) would let things alone so the undertrodden, if only they worked and prayed hard enough, will some day “make it”.

Any radical, and remember the abolitionists were radicals if there ever were any in American politics, or progressive movement will always have to face this dynamic if they try to cause change, even if that change is obviously for the better (for most people.)

We saw this after 9/11, where powerful people were able to take the just anger of the victims of the attack and turn it into a war machine to spend trillions of dollars and destroys many lives.

This is hardly novel and not insightful on my part but as we’re now in another Presidential electoral battle one thing we can do is look out for signs of this dynamic being played out, again.

The whole idea of the United States was basically to use the scientific method for government. Experiment to find out what works, rather than just theorize. States are the laboratories.

“States Rights”, like any doctrine, can be taken to odious extremes, and it has been. But the underlying idea that states should have some sort of say in local government is a sound one.

If video had been available, it would have established immediately that Brown had not been shot in the back. These two cases are different, and not just because no video was available in the Brown-Wilson instance.

The heavy majority of the people that initially concluded what even the Holder Justice Dept eventually concluded about Brown and Wilson are saying now that they want Slager to face the music. And that they expect he’ll be convicted.

Letting the South go would have been a disaster. For starters, slavery would have dragged on at least for decades. And then there’s the economic aspect. Imagine toll booths and customs duties up and down the Mississippi. And then there’s the military side of things. Imagine Germany inveigling the Confederacy into WW1 on her side. Not that it would have gone that way, but Germany would have tried for it and might have made it happen.

There are so many downsides to a Confederacy that it’s just stomach churning to think how bad it could have been. Our real-world situation, warts and all, is so very much better than any reasonably likely outcome of a Confederate States that gained its independence, with or without war.

My greatgranda came over from Ireland to Canada and owed “the shipper,” as he called ‘em, a pretty pence. I’ve met many folks from Asia over the years who’ve related the same tale. Same story, different hemisphere.

In my greatgranda’s case, he assumed a French surname (much easier to get a job in Quebec that way) and worked his arse off. I never met him, he died young, but his son, me grandda told me he was a “straightforward scoundrel.”

Well, I just finished printing off about 300+ pages of technical repair manuals, and of course the EXACT one I need isn’t part of my collection.

I’m going to start rebuilding some scuba regs I got off Ebay for the purpose of learning from. Shop ordered me the parts kits for them at cost. Only problem, 2 of the kits were for the wrong regs. (I KNEW that was going to happen when it was going down….) I’ve got the right kits to get started on the project, I know that it’s going to take a while the first couple of times. (since I’m going to trust these 100 feet down, you bet I’m taking my time). I’m sure that by the time the replacements come in, I’ll be at that point in the project.

Have a good evening. There are reports of scattered penguins and the isolated beaver out there, so take care if you go out.

Born and mainly raised in the south and lived here most of my life, I’ve never seen so many RWNJs mourn this day.

Although if the civil war does come up in some context, people’s “loyalties” do tend to come out, even though I doubt any of them could survive the old sharecropper system these days and they’re probably secretly glad the superior system of the north prevailed and brought the south into modern times and out of agrarian hell. Even though it meant long hours and child labor, the mills were an improvement and offered a steady paycheck as the south eased its way into industrialization and modern times.

I remember these signs, though, because they’re hard to erase from one’s memory and when I began to really question the idea of segregation and someone being considered “lesser” than me and as I got a little older, why fear and contempt for others had infected so many.

Racism really is a disease and poverty and resentment just compound it.

My father’s family was disgustingly racist (from AL); my mother’s was to a lesser degree, a more “genteel” type of racism, but racist nonetheless, and all of it affected me as I tried to grow away from it. Doing so estranged me from family members, esp as I grew more political as an adult and even though there was still a bond with some who still didn’t understand that “tolerance” wasn’t enough, I kept on plodding to get them to understand that we’re all humans with the same needs and desires and we all deserve a good life without the qualifier of race or gender.

Yes, we’ve made progress, but not enough at a fundamental level on either front. How can anyone really feel whole until there is?

Attorney Responds To Times Of Israel Genocide Post: ‘I Didn’t Write That S**t’

Lawyer and writer Josh Bornstein demanded an explanation from The Times of Israel on Thursday after the site published an op-ed under his name that advocated genocide of Palestinians.

The post, which sparked outrage across social media and was quickly taken down by the site, called Palestinians “cockroaches” and said that Israel should “exterminate them.”

The Times of Israel tweeted that it was “looking into” the post and noted that it did not endorse its content. The article ran under the byline of Bornstein, though several people noted that it looked nothing like anything else he had ever published.

At about 6 p.m.. EDT, Bornstein took to Twitter from his home of Australia to clarify that not only had he not written the “racist” pro-genocide post, but that he had never started an account at the Times in the first place.

“I didn’t write that shit,” he said. He noted he was a “secular atheist,” contrary to the religious tone of the piece. He later added that he suspected the site was hacked.

Bornstein said he wanted an explanation from the Times of Israel.

In Q&A a guy asked the lecturer when the ‘good’ Muslims were going to shut down the ‘bad’ Muslims. The priest did a standard bit about diversity and lack of a unified doctrinal voice. Then a Catholic lady in the audience got the mike, spoke about her Iraqi Muslim husband, her son Mohamed, and the Shia/Sunni/ISIS conflict. Did it in 4 minutes in a wicked strong Alabama accent.

I’ve been in parts of the South where I was surprised that they took American money.

Last time I was there, visiting my wife, I was struck by how wide the gap was between those at the low end of the economic spectrum and those at the high end. Along with how low the low was and how high the high was. The endemic racism was disturbing as well.

Coming from Toronto which is enormously multicultural and quite middle class it was eye opening.

I can understand a site having a hard time keeping up with ugly comments, but blog posts calling for genocide that are branded with their name are an entirely different matter, If their business model can’t or won’t allow them to fix it and still remain profitable, then it’s time to look into other models.

The whole idea of the United States was basically to use the scientific method for government. Experiment to find out what works, rather than just theorize. States are the laboratories.

“States Rights”, like any doctrine, can be taken to odious extremes, and it has been. But the underlying idea that states should have some sort of say in local government is a sound one.

Letting the South go would have been a disaster. For starters, slavery would have dragged on at least for decades. And then there’s the economic aspect. Imagine toll booths and customs duties up and down the Mississippi. And then there’s the military side of things. Imagine Germany inveigling the Confederacy into WW1 on her side. Not that it would have gone that way, but Germany would have tried for it and might have made it happen.

There are so many downsides to a Confederacy that it’s just stomach churning to think how bad it could have been. Our real-world situation, warts and all, is so very much better than any reasonably likely outcome of a Confederate States that gained its independence, with or without war.

I really liked him. Got to talk to him one-on-one for a few minutes outside the breakfast. (taking a smoke break has its advantages.) He was really friendly and genuine. Good speaker, too.

Had a similar vibe from O’Malley. At the issues conference, he was actually second banana—Debbie Wasserman-Schultz was the keynote, but O’Malley’s speech was much better than hers.

I gave her a bit of a pass, because she was supposed to come in Friday night for a fund-raiser event, but the moron Republicans had fucked up the Homeland Security vote and she had to stay in DC and fly in early Saturday morning, so she was probably both tired and pissed.

I actually and this is weird given my aversion to standardized testing but I kind of like the idea of a national curriculum especially in regards to the sciences and mathematics- with literature and history I favor some variation since we have differing regional histories and literature though of course grammar is something that should fall in with the above. The way I figure, our students are going to be applying for the same universities throughout the nation. But yes there is the American obsession that local control is best which sounds great almost until you realize how nutso some local school boards are and are filled with people like the one board member who said he wished LGBT students would kill themselves.

You know what I find more interesting - whether the officer had other excessive force incidents, and how the department handles those excessive force incidents involving him and others, and whether there is adequate oversight to make sure that officers are acting appropriately.

While the PD has been more forthright in this case, and have already taken steps to protect itself from further lawsuits (namely firing the officer involved, being more open with media to inquiries, etc.), the Department’s actions deserve far more scrutiny than a man whose only offense for reason of the MV stop was a busted tail light. That Scott ran should not have been a death sentence.

But that remains a problem with police nationally. They jump the gun on using deadly force, and their handling of mentally ill people is especially bad.

Blacks are disproportionately involved in excessive force incidents, especially deadly force incidents.

Mentally ill are also disproportionately involved in excessive force incidents, especially deadly force incidents.

If you’re black and suffer from mental illness, these kinds of incidents have a particularly deadly outcome.

This all has to change, and it will take more than simply firing or prosecuting officers who shoot and kill. It means new and improved training, changing law and policy on use of deadly force, and all with an eye towards not only officer safety (which until now trumps all else), but towards public safety and minimizing use of deadly force.

So with it being Autism Awareness month. I find myself looking at the two camps that exist in the community. Those who want a cure and more research into Autism and those who resist any research at all since they see it as a threat. Honestly, while I do think some parents of autistic children do try to portray Autism as some kind of curse or burden for them and their children, I favor more research for a couple of simple reasons. One, I think it will do us a lot of good to understand how autism works and why it happens. Secondly, and this goes with reason one but more understanding will perhaps make life a little more bearable for us on the spectrum and people will see people with Autism not as freaks but as people. I am not huge on Autism Speaks from what I know about that group but I don’t like the other side of the coin that acts like research and a cure would be a terrible thing either.A facebook friend posted this yesterday.

Well I can’t speak for them but I think a lot of them see their different neurodiversity as a source for their unique identity and that’s something I empathize with but at the same time, I’d love to be able to do things like make eye contact without thinking about it or the other “normal” things but at the same time, my obsessions do drive me in a way. I want more research overall because I think it’s important we understand.

If there is one thing, I wish more people realized about being on the spectrum is we’re like the rest of you: not all brilliant savants with an encyclopedic knowledge or the other side of it. I’d like to see a show or film portray a spectrum character realistically in the sense that they show that we too struggle finding the right job for us, love, and feel pain.

Exactly. As an Old, I didn’t know that I was HFA until I started looking into autism on behalf of our son. I suspect that the causes of autism are so deep in the way that our brains work that a cure is improbable. I do hope that combinations of medication and therapy can be found that will enable autistics to become more comfortable and functional in society.

I think you’re right about the cure. And I definitely agree I hope research can allow for medication and therapy that can make life more comfortable and easier to function. One of the most troubling things to me about people on the spectrum is how we struggle with employment. It’s been a struggle for long term employment my whole adult life. I haven’t gotten fired for positions or anything like that but I’ve had a hard time getting hired in the first place which would otherwise allow me to beef up my resume. I think HFAs are often going to be underemployed too. I’ve had nothing but internships since my college graduation and I graduated with honors.

I never took any kids to our home and my sister may have brought 1 or 2 over the years (some of that was embarrassment at our living situation and disapproval by our dad). We didn’t even think it very unusual because, being kids, we thought everyone lived that way. I think you used to see a lot more kids like that, since today’s kids seem a lot more social and confident—or maybe I don’t get out much. : )

Right. I used to be a lot more shyer than I am. My parents and one brother will always remember that I was so nervous about ringing the doorbell of my best friend’s house that he had to do it for me. I also was petrified of calling people on the phone. Hell, I still do get a little nervous about that but that’s mostly for customer service stuff or for following up job applications.

I played the hell out of Sims 2. I even downloaded a genie lamp that would allow me to pretty much cheat at will. I could use it to refill a Sim’s needs, make another Sim fall in love with me, take annoying Sims and make them poop themselves so they’d leave, etc. It was awesome.

I haven’t played in ages. I’d have to buy a whole new computer for the newer games, and I’m just not all that enthused by the idea. I spend 8+ hours a day in front of a computer at work. At home, I’d rather just watch Netflix or read on my Kindle Fire.

These analogies are often a big hit (X = Holocaust), when in fact it isn’t a Holocaust, nor is it genocide or war crimes we’re talking about.

This is the saddest thing I’ve seen in a long time:

Kayleb Moon-Robinson — who is diagnosed as autistic — had barely started sixth grade last fall in Lynchburg, Virginia, when a school resource officer filed charges against him. When my wife first started on antidepressant meds, some of her friends told her they were afraid that they would change her. She said, “I sure hope so!”

Her friends didn’t have to live in her head, with the anxiety and depression that she’s always excelled at not showing.

I just tried an experiment with my meds. I take Effexor and Celexa as antidepressants (they don’t work well for that) and in order to deal with anger. I’m tired of them making me tired and unmotivated so I stopped taking them a week ago. I’m now more motivated, but I’m also quicker to anger and far more likely to act on that anger. I’ve restarted my Celexa because it’s just an SSRI where Effexor is an SNRI, to see what effects it has on my motivation and/or anger.

I find that even though I am well aware of my anger, without the meds I respond to events that shouldn’t cause anger with anger & that acting on the anger means people & pets around me are possibly in danger.

I won’t hit members of my family, but if you aren’t in my family, look out.

Next up is to drop the Celexa and restart Effexor to see if the anger is reduced and the motivation/energy stays high. If I can’t get away from the anger without feeling lethargic and tired, I’m not sure what to do.

Go kill a punching bag every day perhaps.

It’s all trial and error. Good luck! My doc gave me something to try for less dizziness. All I got was the ‘side-effects’, dry-mouth and fatigue. More coffee!
