GOP Candidates Race to the Bottom, Endorse the Term “Anchor Baby”

How low will they go?
Politics • Views: 65,140

The grossly offensive and dehumanizing term “anchor baby” used to be avoided by Republican politicians, back in the days when they were still hoping to court the immigrant vote. The only people you’d hear using it in public were fringe nativist weirdos like Tom Tancredo or Michelle Malkin.

But now that Donald Trump has led the GOP down a very dark and hateful path, Republican presidential candidates are falling all over themselves to show the debased right wing electorate that they can be just as bigoted and offensive and “politically incorrect” as The Donald.

Yes, even Jeb Bush, who’s married to a Hispanic woman.

Speaking on Bill Bennett’s conservative radio show “Morning in America” Wednesday, Bush went as far as using the derogatory term “anchor baby” to describe his support for tighter enforcement on children born in the U.S. to immigrant parents.

“If there’s abuse, people are bringing - pregnant women are coming in to have babies simply because they can do it, then there ought to be greater enforcement,” Bush said in the interview, which was written about by POLITICO. “That’s [the] legitimate side of this. Better enforcement so that you don’t have these, you know, ‘anchor babies,’ as they’re described, coming into the country.”

And even Bobby Jindal — who is actually a beneficiary of birthright citizenship himself: Bobby Jindal: I’m ‘Happy to Use’ the Term ‘Anchor Babies’

[Fox News host BIll] Hemmer asked Jindal to clarify whether he would use the term “anchor babies,” and the Republican presidential hopeful said he would.

“Folks today are too easily offended. They’re too politically correct,” Jindal said. “The real issue here — yeah I’m happy to use the term — but the reality is the real issue here is we need to secure our border.”

how many women actually come to the United States just to have children? My guess is most come to the US to work and end up having children because that’s what (most) people eventually do.

Ooooo…Jindal scored a big three pointer using “anchor baby”, “politically correct” and “secure our border” all in one statement.

That is what being a Rhodes Scholar will do for you. Well, that and a pandering, copycat, me-too kinda stinky-ass politician.

If there’s abuse, if there are women coming over to have babies, if, I don’t know, maybe, we’re just speculating here because it would be irresponsible not to….

If some pregnant women are coming over, we should enforce that stuff, better enforce, all the technology, abuse, stop it. Enforcement.

It’s not talked about a lot but there are Chinese businesses that cater to women who want to come over and give birth in the US.

I don’t think that it is a large number, percentage-wise, but it does happen. Parents are willing to do what they can to ensure a better life for their children.

After we get done enforcing all the immigration enforcement, we’re going to cut taxes and reduce government and shrink Washington and give government and power back to the people.

There might be some drone attacks on the border, some home raids, but Washington will be shrunker and moar freedom.

From what I have heard from co-workers, women travelling from overseas to the US do get the third degree if doing so while visibly pregnant. The border folks are very interested in how long the trip is for, why they’re coming to the US, etc.

A lot of the maternity hotels try to bring the women in months in advance to try to get around this.

It’s just ridiculous that no reporter has been able to get Trump to detail, with specific defensible policy proposals, what he means by ‘making America great again.’ All they get is ‘I’ll negotiate that another day, it’ll be great’ and we’re back to the horserace coverage.

There are places on the border where there is NO medical care available on the Mexican side, but there is on the US side. Women go to the border when labor starts. People who work the American side of the border know what to do, and treat the woman well, as far as I have heard.

No baby can petition for their parents to come here legally (to be a green card holder) until they are at least 21 years old.

HuffPo piece saying it was approximately 60,000 babies born in 2014 in “maternity hotels” (up from 10,000 in 2012) For comparison sake, there were 3.93 million children born in the US in 2013. I’m not sure I’d consider (at most) 1.5% of all births being an issue worth freaking out over.

That said, denying birthright citizenship for the child of a tourist is quite different than a permanent (legal or illegal) resident alien.

The main issue with this practice is they are falsifying their visa request as to why they are coming here. Now if the woman was truthful about why she wanted her child born in the U.S. and stated it was so her child could have U.S. citizenship I highly doubt that either the Chinese or U.S. Government would approve said visa.

Marquette Poll: Scott Walker’s approval level at home drops below 40 percent

Republican presidential hopeful Gov. Scott Walker continues to face significant dissatisfaction among voters in his home state with his job approval dipping below 40 percent for the first time in a new Marquette Law School Poll released Thursday.

The poll also found Walker is leading other Republican presidential candidates in his home state, but has significantly less support than he did in April.

The poll found 39 percent of registered voters approve of Walker’s job performance, while 57 percent disapprove. That 18-point gap is three points larger than it was in the previous Marquette poll in April, which saw a steep decline from polls taken before his re-election last November. The approval level is the lowest of all Marquette polls since January 2012.

Those are wealthy Chinese; they wait until they’re 2-3 months pregnant, then come here on a tourist visa (good for a year), pay full price for pre-natal, labor and delivery at a Chinese-owned hospital… then go home with their swaddled infant and birth certificate.

And now their wicked plans are laid bare: CHINUS!

Just to be even more pedantic: small-f fascism. Like, “Fascism” = that Italian thing, “fascism” = overarching term.

From my readings, yes, it’s a “smaller circle within the large one” (whether wholly, or mostly - one could argue about where e.g. antisemitism fits) among most contemporary authors (the leading one being Roger Griffin). I wouldn’t exclude the possibility that some authors don’t classify Nazism as a form of fascism, but the consensus is that it is. There’s much more variability with the classification of the Falangist, Japanese wartime, Pinochetist ideologies - some say they’re also forms of fascism, others disagree.

While there were two racist jugheads from South Boston hate-criming on a homeless man (and citing allegiance to TRUMP in the process), on the other side of the river in Somerville, the mayor (Joe Curtatone) has hung a “Black Lives Matter” banner at Somerville City Hall. Bravo!

“We see this as an important opportunity for an important national conversation” about race, Curtatone said. He said the move was “a very clear statement we are making to the community that we recognize that structural racism exists in our society; it exists in our public and private institutions.”

Curtatone said the partnership is not meant to criticize the work of the Somerville Police Department, which he referred to as a model for community-based policing efforts. He said it was actually a “statement of faith” in the department.
“They’re fantastic,” he said, adding that the police chief supports the cause. “This is not just about law enforcement. The goal is to address racism in all of our other public and private institutions. We are in this as a whole city, not with just a focus on police.”

All the F-16 has to do is make a high speed pass near the drone. The aircraft’s vortex will tumble it right out of the sky. We had a Cessna 150 blunder into the flight pattern just as one of our pilots was coming around for final approach. Although our aircraft missed the intruder he passed by close enough to blow the windscreen out of the Cessna at which point it became a pinwheel.

re: #131 Nyet

Russia 2015 acc. to Eco:

“1. The first feature of Ur-Fascism is the cult of tradition.”

Absolutely.

“2. Traditionalism implies the rejection of modernism.”

Yep.

“3. Irrationalism also depends on the cult of action for action’s sake.”

Look at the daily news from Russia.

“4. No syncretistic faith can withstand analytical criticism. The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture the scientific
community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge. For Ur-Fascism, disagreement is treason.”

Bullseye.

“5. Besides, disagreement is a sign of diversity. Ur-Fascism grows up and seeks for consensus by exploiting and exacerbating the natural fear of difference. The first appeal
of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.”

Need I even?

“6. Ur-Fascism derives from individual or social frustration.”

Fits.

“7. To people who feel deprived of a clear social identity, Ur-Fascism says that their only privilege is the most common one, to be born in the same country. This is the origin of
nationalism.”

That’s Russia.

“8. The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies. When I was a boy I was taught to think of Englishmen as the five-meal people.”

Sort of, because officially the Russians live “better” than the USA or Gayrope, but of course everybody understands…

“9. For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.”

Yes, after the Crimea.

“10. Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology, insofar as it is fundamentally aristocratic, and aristocratic and militaristic elitism cruelly implies contempt for the weak. Ur-Fascism can only advocate a popular elitism. Every citizen belongs to the best people of the world, the members of the party are the best among the citizens, every citizen can (or ought to) become a member of the party.”

More or less.

“11. In such a perspective everybody is educated to become a hero.”

Sort of. “Patriotism lessons” and such.

“12. Since both permanent war and heroism are difficult games to play, the Ur-Fascist transfers his will to power to sexual matters.”

Need I?

“13. Ur-Fascism is based upon a selective populism, a qualitative populism, one might say. In a democracy, the citizens have individual rights, but the citizens in their entirety have a political impact only from a quantitative point of view - one follows the decisions of the majority. For Ur-Fascism, however, individuals as individuals have no rights, and the People is conceived as a quality, a monolithic entity expressing the Common Will. Since no large quantity of human beings can have a common will, the Leader pretends to be their interpreter.”

Arguably Russia is already there.

“14. Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak.”

Depends, but if Propagandaspeak counts… Plus censorship.

The official whose email account it is, is the authority who determines what’s private and what’s work-related. The personal emails, the Gov’t has no more right to than her personal physical mail. She left office under no cloud and in good standing. She was not then and is not now under criminal investigation.

Yesterday the AP ran a story that sounds eye-poppingly scary. The International Atomic Energy Agency has a “secret” side deal that will allow the Iranians to inspect themselves. What the hell, right? Thanks Obama and what was Obama thinking? But the story itself was based on the reporter apparently not knowing what he was talking about. And the AP had to later scrub what were seemingly the most damning details. I’d go into those details. But Max Fischer at Vox has a very lengthy explainer going into just how botched this steaming pile was.

They call that an Air Show.

When we lived in The City, during Fleet Week the Blue Angels would do their show over Chrissy Field, but of course, the F18s (?) they were flying took MILES to turn around, so they’d come zooming over our place in The Richmond. Pretty cool! Noisy, but cool.

The EPA deployed 13 tanks𠅉 to the Shiprock area—to help Navajo farmers in the aftermath of the Gold King Mine spill.

However, the Navajo Nation, which was already skeptical of the EPA’s response to the mine spill, says the tanks are dirty oilfield tanks.

President Russell Begaye said the water in the tanks, which was intended for crops and livestock, was brown and smelly, and the tank it came in was far from clean.

Good afternoon Fellow Lizards. For the gamers here, keep an eye out for Armored Warfare once it comes out. It’s Modern Tanks (unlike another tank game that has the same initials as War On Terror) and all of them did/do exist. I am in the early access and the game absolutely rocks. There are co-op and PvP modes, unlocking vehicles like artillery and tank destroyers is a bit more challenging than just deciding to “go down that line” and the outfitting/upgrading system is really well done (same for crew experience).

Right now I have the following vehicles:

M113
P-76
LAV-150
BMP-1 (the thing is a death wagon).

M48 Patton
M60 Patton
T54
T62

My WoT friends say I should be paid for gushing about the game, but what can I say it’s really well done.

there’s very little evidence of herd immunity. History shows you can’t eradicate the disease, it just mutates.

Smallpox was unavailable for comment.

BTW, the President of my previous company was part of the Smallpox Eradication team for the WHO. They did it, not by vaccinating everyone, but by going wherever there was an outbreak and vaccinating the whole village.

In every village, to show it was safe, he also jabbed himself with the scarification needle. If Smallpox ever returns, I guarantee he won’t get it.

My eejit Libertarian Rand Paul acolyte congresscritter:

Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie, a Republican from Lewis County, is quickly showing that a sharp guy with two degrees from MIT who made millions as a technological whiz kid can’t find his backside with both hands when it comes to navigating the jungle that is our nation’s capital.

If you are so disposed, applaud Massie for abandoning the ancient unwritten texts that have guided the great American experiment for two centuries. But then quit complaining about the gridlock that continues to flood the process and stop wondering why the federal government isn’t there when you need it.

It comes as no surprise that at least one organization has determined that Massie is one of the least-effective lawmakers serving in one of the least-effective Congresses in human history.

According to InsideGov, a nonpartisan research website that provides information on national and state-level politics, Massie ranks 12th on its list of least-effective lawmakers, having sponsored 12 bills since entering Congress in 2012 and managing to pass, well, none of them. He hasn’t even proved able to get any of his legislation through committee.

That’s 0-for-12 if you’re scoring at home, placing him well short of the Mendoza Line. Even Cincinnati Reds outfielders do better than that.

Borrowed them from California maybe. There was a DailyKos dairy the other day about how wastewater from oil operations is being used for irrigation in places in California. Diluted by local water, but still has fracking or other processing chemicals in it to some degree.

Caitlyn Jenner could be charged with manslaughter following her car accident in Malibu earlier this year that left one dead.

“The case will be submitted to the district attorney next week,” said Lt. Shaun Mathers of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives have completed their six-month investigation and are set to present evidence to the prosecution that could lead to a misdemeanor manslaughter charge against the “I Am Cait” star. Because there’s “nothing really egregious” in the case, Det. Richard Curry of the Sheriff’s Dept. said there’s a “50/50” chance that she will be charged.

Jenner was driving down Pacific Coast Highway on February 7 at an unsafe speed when her Escalade hit another vehicle, causing a chain-reaction crash. Det. Curry said Jenner’s violation of the vehicular manslaughter law ultimately led to a death.

oh. my.

Last week, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio became one of the latest Republican presidential candidates to weigh in on the Black Lives Matter movement last week without proposing any actual policy solutions. In a Fox News interview, Rubio said racial disparities in policing and the criminal justice system are a “legitimate issue,” but not one that federal legislation could fix.

“It is a fact that in the African American community around this country, there has been for a number of years now a growing resentment towards the way law enforcement and the criminal justice system interacts with the community,” he said last Thursday. “We do need to face this. It’s a serious problem in this country. There are a lot of different reasons for it. Not all of them have governmental answers.”

Rubio went on to discuss a personal friend who has been stopped by police eight to nine times in the past 18 months, saying he would also be upset if the same thing happened to him.

“It has to be confronted but it may not necessarily have a federal bill that we can pass that can fix all this,” he continued. “This is a problem our nation has to confront because it is real.”

He also said he recognizes the Black Lives Matter movement’s grievances, but does not think they are asking for actual solutions. “I don’t think they have a detailed policy plan they want us to carry out. And I said, some of it doesn’t have governmental solutions.”

World-class waffling there.

I pointed out how this song was about a guy trying to convince a woman to cheat on her husband, but they didn’t believe me.

“I’m not worried bout the ring you wear

You’re feelin’ guilty and I’m well aware

And I wonder if I ever cross your mind.
For me it happens all the time.

re: #9 klys (maker of Silmarils)

It’s not talked about a lot but there are Chinese businesses that cater to women who want to come over and give birth in the US.

I don’t think that it is a large number, percentage-wise, but it does happen. Parents are willing to do what they can to ensure a better life for their children.

I’m late to the party, but wanted to chime in on this part. Klys is correct: there are “tourist agencies” that arrange for Chinese mothers to come to the States (generally California) to give birth to their babies. The agencies and the expectant mothers game the system, by taking the ladies to various tourist spots as a pretense. Most of the time, the Chinese mothers stay in an apartment complex learning mothering skills and waiting for the child’s delivery. Needless to say the immigration authorities frown on this arrangement.

Most of these moms are not planning to stay in America. Once their baby is born, they head back to China. For these well-to-do Chinese, the baby’s birthplace is both an insurance policy and an investment. It gives the kid — and by proxy his or her parents — a legal entry into the USA. At the same time, it also complicates matters back home, because of China’s hukou system, which gives local residents easier access to schools and health care. But well-to-do parents can overcome these problems with money, so the American Born Chinese (ABC) baby has the best of both worlds.

But we’re talking thousands of people here, probably less than the numbers of Central American kids crossing the border into the States.

re: #351 Nyet

King has just posted the whole story at DKos:

dailykos.com

My personal knowledge of Shaun King comes from the two incidents from his high school years concerning the fight at the football game, and him being mobbed in 1995. I am the same age as he is, and the time of our High School years could be described as a time of inflamed racial tensions in Central Ky. I went to a public high school in Lexington, that at the time had the one of highest percentage by population of minority students in the state. It was a school in poor shape and ill-repair. Especially compared to newer schools that did not have the high minority populations. In 1994, Lexington Police Officers shot an unarmed Tony Sullivan(Who actually did have his hands raised in surrender), which set off demonstrations in downtown Lexington, of which I was a part of. We all could recognize the racial tensions. Even though Shaun King went to high school 20 miles away, we heard about his beating. There were kids from my school who talked about trying to find out who did this to Shaun, and that we should go after them. His history is real, and it connects.

Yes, I know that there are issues with some of the things he writes, but any issues with that should be critical of that, without questioning of his identity, and now the story of his parents. Some things just need to be left well enough alone. I didn’t get specific with these events in the earlier thread, until he wrote this.

IIRC the Aquarium keeps theirs in the Outer Bay tank, with the sharks and various tunas. When the Boys were little, we’d go there every so often and they’d spend most of an hour with one in the balcony and the other by the glass. Whenever the Sunfish was coming, the one in the balcony would run down and let the other one know so they could follow it.

So how exactly would this work? How would you stop pregnant undocumented women from having babies in the U.S.?

In here, yes. Where I’m at, the haze from wildfire smoke is pretty bad. NWS issued an air quality advisory today. It’s so goddamn hazy! Like I said last night, there’s a substantial mountain range about 20 miles from my house that can be seen very easily on a clear day. You can’t see the mountain range at all today.

Twin Falls county is under an orange alert. Treasure valley was put under red earlier this afternoon.

re: #375 Eric The Fruit Bat

Ironically, The US is coming down on China for their Operation Fox Hunt, which is sending in Chinese agents from various branches to try to bring back those who have fled China-many of who probably have offspring born here under the regimen you describe.

As There is no extradition treaty between China and the US, it forces such actions way out into the open-something both sides don’t really want to advertise.

Indeed. Operation Fox Hunt is supposedly about rounding up rich Chinese who have smuggled their loot out of the country and are avoiding paying taxes in China, but it’s also about rounding up dissidents and party officials who are on the current administration’s shit list. Money is a secondary issue.

What’s amusing is the American response: we’re totally OK with your spies spying on us, because we do it too, but we’re not OK with non-spies doing the Chinese version of Bounty Hunter. That’s against the rules of spying, yo!

I think they saw he was in a marked utility truck, and then faked horrific injuries well after the fact.
The woman was walking around the parking lot and talking on her cell phone while the man was saying “we don’t want to involve the cops”.
Then, much later…she’s in the hospital.

Exactly. Trump is running for the GOP nomination as a fascist, by appealing to elements of fascism that have long festered in the GOP base.

This degeneration of the GOP base is a long term project of Fox News and the GOP establishment. So they can’t exactly get back in control by confronting the fascist aspects of the US right.

“It is uncomfortable,” guest host Melissa Francis said, explaining why she’s become averse to discussing race issues amid the rise of #BlackLivesMatter. “Sometimes you feel like it’s hard to say anything right.”

Regular host Kimberly Guilfoyle took offense to the notion that white people might struggle to grasp the discrimination that black Americans face.

“You’ve got to be inclusive,” Guilfoyle said. “I think it’s very insulting to say, ‘White people don’t understand.’ What are you talking about? You’re part of the problem then if you’re … speaking and labeling all white people, saying they don’t understand the issue or saying they can’t relate. That’s really not giving people much credit, is it?”

Guest host Brian Kilmeade said he was tired of being blamed for everything.

“We’re in an impossible situation,” Kilmeade lamented. “If you come up to us and say there was slavery in this country 220 years ago and white people did it and I hold you responsible, what do you want me, Melissa, Greg and Kimberly to say?” he said, naming the show’s other white hosts. “Number one, my relatives weren’t even here. My ancestors weren’t even here at the time.”

Did Reed react to your rebuttal of the Rotschild nonsense?

re: #520 The Vicious Babushka

He retweeted it.

I don’t know what Rothschild thing you guys are talking about, but I’m going to assume it’s some kind of antisemitic conspiracy theory.

Speaking of:

Apparently, it’s not a popular program and is on in the dead of night, so it’s unlikely many people listened to it. But still, on state-owned radio? WTF?

Might be loopholes with damage under $1000.00 plus the CCV shows the incident with suspicious motives on the other party’s part. I wouldn’t sweat it. Thank the stars no one was hurt.

I just called Antiono and he has lots of orders lately. lol

This is just meant as something cute and sweet. You sound like you need something like that.

Thanks.
I did a one minute “I told you so” to hubs on the phone and then told him I wouldn’t mention it ever again.
I won’t mention it again.

The irony is that creating a safe republican district by its very nature tends to create a neighboring safe democrat district. Incumbents win again! (unless you pissed off the party leadership, then you are screwed.)

I’m quite glad I waited for Shaun King to explain things in his own words and not read anything else (besides the occasional passing tweet) about him. It’s disgusting what he’s going through, naked racism and incitement of violence. In his latest kos diary he said he has taken added steps to protect himself and his family.

That it’s on private property might make a difference. (Assuming it’s not a gov bldg parking lot.) Also, it may be like in Houston where they ask that you not call police for minor accidents and just file reports later.
