The right wing propagandists of the Internet are always whacked out. That’s a given. But the rhetoric coming out of them about the arrest of anti-gay Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis is so over the top it seems like parody. For example, this crazed Facebook rant about “living in the shadow of tyranny” by Breitbart “News” hack Ben Shapiro:

The rule of law is dead — unless you’re a Christian or a conservative, in which case the left will use the law to throw you in prison.

Complete lack of rule of law is anarchy; selective rule of law is tyranny.

Any nation that throws Kim Davis in jail but leaves Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Gavin Newsome, Kamala Harris, mayors of sanctuary cities, and Washington D.C. clerks who refuse to issue concealed carry permits on the loose is living in the shadow of tyranny.

This disconnected, reality-challenged blurt actually garnered more than 500 likes from Shapiro’s even crazier right wing readers.

well good for Kim for being bold and brave enough to stand for her religious principals… now after you’ve done some jail time, feel free to resign because holding a public office, where you have to serve the needs of all of the people in the county, not just those that you approve of, is kind of the job description.

When you hear a right-winger say something like this - something they blatantly stole from someone on the left using it effectively against some scumfuck righty - it doesn’t help to think of them as a panicky, flailing, desperate person stuck on the defensive. (They usually are, but that’s not the point.)

Instead, think of them as a character. Specifically, think of them as some wide-eyed naïf character who learns a Word You Can’t Say On Television from some authority figure in their life. This is a situation that happens in cartoons quite frequently, but also happens in live-action sitcoms… and real life, as the parents in the audience can surely attest. (Example: In the episode Sailor Mouth, Spongebob learns a WYCSOTV off a dumpster behind the Krusty Krab.) “Gosh,” the character says, “what a great word! It’s just so useful! Why did they never teach me this word in school?” So the little moppet uses the WYCSOTV frequently, in every situation, and seems puzzled when adults are scandalized. “But why do they think it’s bad? I mean, I’m just using it like they do!”

The two main differences between these episodes and the reality in which we live: 1. The only people scandalized by these terms are right-wingers who can’t stand their flaws being pointed out, again and again and again, and 2. There exists no entity in this country that has both the will and the authority to sit our darling little RWNJ children down and explain to them, as an authority figure always does in these situations on TV, that there is a time and place for these words to be used. In a perfect world, our media would take up that job, but we don’t live in a perfect world, do we?

Thus do our own little Spongebobs continue willfully and gleefully using the WYCSOTV they picked up in conversation with the saner part of our country, never being told that they’re making a spectacle of themselves in polite company.

I don’t think there has ever been a time when the average adherent of any religion was truly intellectually engaged with their faith. I don’t know if anybody picked this up on an earlier thread (damn, with this working full time, I’m missing out on valuable LGF Time).

The Donald totally beclowned himself today when asked about the various leaders in Islamist terrorism. (emphasis mine).

Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt found something Donald Trump doesn’t win at on Thursday — knowing his terrorists.
“I’m looking for the next commander-in-chief, to know who Hassan Nasrallah is, and Zawahiri, and al-Julani, and al-Baghdadi. Do you know the players without a scorecard, yet, Donald Trump?” Hewitt asked the 2016 Republican candidate, referring to the respective leaders of Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State.
“No,” Trump said.
“You know, I’ll tell you honestly, I think by the time we get to office, they’ll all be changed. They’ll be all gone,” he said. “I knew you were going to ask me things like this, and there’s no reason, because, No. 1, I’ll find, I will hopefully find Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the pack.”
Trump said asking him who the key players are was a type of “gotcha question.”
“I will be so good at the military, your head will spin. But obviously, I’m not meeting these people. I’m not seeing these people,” Trump said.
“Now, as far as what you’re talking about now, I will know every detail, and I will have the right plan, not a plan like this where we’re probably going backwards based on everything that I’m hearing, but we’re probably going backwards, zero respect. We have, we are not a respected country, and certainly as it relates to ISIS and what’s going on, and Iran.”

Heh. Had I thought of that, I’d have probably said that one. It’s far better than, say, the Thomas Covenant books, but it’s still a very average fantasy series. I’d be far more interested in Guy Gavriel Kay’s “‎The Fionavar Tapestry” being done instead.

The first Covenant book was good, if only for the premise used to get TC into the “fantasy world” where he was a hero. It waned after that.

Meanwhile, I’m about halfway through the second Game of Thrones novel, and finding it necessary to skim through the exquisitely detailed descriptions of what people are wearing and what they are eating to get to the interesting stuff, as in, the plot. I have to give Martin credit for his imagination (and consistency) in describing down to the type of fabric and sauce used for the clothing and cuisine of his universe, but wouldn’t all that be better served as a separate dish, as in an appendix or two?

I hit “enough” halfway through the first book. I just wasn’t interested in a fantasy replay of the War of the Roses where Shakespeare’s Richard would have been too nice to survive.

I read the whole thing, but GRRM never explained how his society maintained its medieval stasis for thousands of years, or why anyone in that continent of triple-crossers would trust the next person enough to even have a society, or why the white walkers didn’t know how boats worked, etc. etc. etc.

It’s a throwback to the Renaissance. Authors back then would include tangential stories as characters related their backstories to the protagonists, or they’d include entire plays within the narrative, if the protagonists happened to be in the audience. Don Quijote is one example, but there are plenty more. As the novel developed as an art form, authors included less extraneous detail to explore the internal world of the characters, include more dialog, and experiment with POV and language. In other words, the novel was pared down to the essentials: characters, plot, setting. The modern novel requires the reader to imagine all the fiddly little details.

Martin-esque fantasy leaves little to the imagination, in more ways than one.

Cruz and his fellow Religious Rightists conveniently ignore all the conscientious objectors and protesters who went to jail willingly to witness to the world the injustices they were fighting against. They did not ask for personal exemptions to civil law, or expect they keep their cushy jobs while refusing to perform their duties. They broke laws knowing there would be consequences, and they accepted those consequences willingly.
