I’m thinking that we don’t have long before something real bad blows here. Between the religious zealots being engorged by GOP presidential candidates, the RWNJ media with a couple of decades of demonizing “them”, and our fetish level gun culture, there’s a real ugly toxic mix brewing. I’m feeling some bad bloody darkness approaching. The scariest thing about the way I’m feeling is that I’m pretty sure it isn’t just paranoia.

Hugh Hewitt: You know that stuff. You know every developer in Manhattan. You know everything about building buildings. You could build the wall. I have no doubt about that.

Donald Trump: Right. By the way, and nobody knows how easy that would be. And I mean, it would be, it would be tall, it would be powerful, we would make it very good looking. It would be as good as a wall’s got to be, and people will not be climbing over that wall, believe me.

Hugh Hewitt: Okay, looking to Asia, if China were to either accidentally or intentionally sink a Filipino or Japanese ship, what would Commander-In-Chief Donald Trump do in response?

Donald Trump: I wouldn’t want to tell you, because frankly, they have to, you know, somebody wrote a very good story about me recently, and they said there’s a certain unpredictable, and it was actually another businessman, said there’s a certain unpredictability about Trump that’s great, and it’s what made him a lot of money and a lot of success. You don’t want to put, and you don’t want to let people know what you’re going to do with respect to certain things that happen. You don’t want the other side to know. I don’t want to give you an answer to that. If I win, and I’m leading in every single poll, if I win, I don’t want people to know exactly what I’m going to be doing.

HH: Fair response. Good response.

30% in the polls of likely Republican primary voters.

re: #12 teleskiguy

Half of that question is crazy… China wouldn’t intentionally sink a Japanese or Filipino ship because that would be an act of war and likely the start of WWIII.

As for Trump’s response, he might as well have said “fuck if I know”

Donald Trump: I’m very, very pro-2nd Amendment. And if you want to ask that [definition of an assault rifle], I would go to the experts. All I can tell you is that I am totally a 2nd Amendment person, and totally in favor of not doing anything.

Hugh Hewitt: All right, now President Obama is President Obama today, because when he ran for the United States Senate, his principle opponent, Jack Ryan, had divorce and custody records that had been sealed unsealed. Is there any smoking gun sealed away in records that could come out about Donald Trump down the road to destroy the Republican nominee after you’re the nominee, if you’re the nominee?

Donald Trump: No, I don’t think so, and I think one of the things you know about me, I’ve been a very public person. While I’m private, I’ve also been a very public person over many years. I mean, people know me. I’m very well known, and whether it’s the great success on The Apprentice, where it was one of the top shows on television for a long time, and by the way, NBC renewed it, and is not in love with the fact that I didn’t do it, but they renewed me for The Apprentice for many, many shows on The Apprentice, and you see the kind of money I made on The Apprentice, and I turned it down. I said I’m going to run for president, I’m going to make America great again. They were not happy that I did that, so they’re stuck in limbo. But they renewed The Apprentice. I didn’t do it. No, I think nothing. I’m a very public person, even though I’m private. I think you have seen me, and long before we met and spoke, you’ve seen me, and you know exactly what I’m talking about. So I would say nothing.

I read it so you don’t have to!

Mind blowing. I have a feeling we’re witnessing a complete and utter collapse of a major political party in the United States. They’re very quickly relegating themselves to a regional and racial (white) political party. That won’t work in big general elections. I’m hoping for enthusiastic and blatant marginalization of the Republican Party as we know it today. Democratic Party electoral sweep, anyone?

Busting our humps might not be good enough. I fully expect, even with all the voter suppression and intimidation, for Hillary (presumably) to win a decisive, maybe even YOOGE Popular Vote victory. There are so many plans afoot to pull some kind of Electoral Vote jiggery-pokery that I’m not sure we can count on her taking office.

Absent trickery like that, no Democrat is going to lose the Kerry map, and add any one of Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, or Florida and that’s it. But now suppose the Wisconsin or Illinois or Michigan Legislatures decide to give all their Electoral Votes to the GOP? Or hand them out by (gerrymandered) Legislative Districts?

The Hell of it is, it’s probably legal. Would people rise up after seeing their candidate win by 10 points and having the other guy take office? Why didn’t they in 2000? What’s the numerical cutoff? I don’t know.

So there’s English booty and there’s German Beute.

The always helpful wiktionary tells us:

From Middle English buty, botye, from Middle Dutch buet or Middle Low German būte, buite ‎(“exchange, booty”); akin to Old French butin ‎(“booty”), from the same Germanic source. Cognate with German Beute ‎(“booty”), Swedish byte ‎(“booty”), Icelandic býti ‎(“exchange, barter”).

I wonder though if it’s also related to Russian dobycha (which means more or less the same thing), dobyt’, where do is a prefix.

Ah yes. Anyhow, I remember attending a guest lecture from a professor from Baylor University who talked about how in the West anyhow, not having an official state religion may actually increase church attendance since the citizenry isn’t required to pay taxes to any one church but he may have been ignoring certain factors that make the U.S a more religious society than Western European society. Forget the exact details since this was gosh close to eight years ago already.

Now that I think about it in hindsight, it makes sense and seems rather obvious. Any position that provides an important function/service needs to have a back-up in case something happens (jail, sudden sickness/injury/death, etc.) that incapacitates the primary provider; hence vice presidents, deputy mayors, etc.

It would be nuts if things had to screech to a halt indefinitely simply because one person couldn’t (or wouldn’t) do their job.

Wait. Wut?

Joe Davis, Kim’s son, thinks that this is about making sure that he (and his mom) have the same rights? Errrr. What right is that? To be a bigot? Nothing about this situation changes all that. She is a bigot.

She just doesn’t get to use her position in government to spread her bigoted position, which she claims is based on closely held religious beliefs.

Her religious beliefs aren’t being trampled since she’s not being forced into being gay married - someone else is willingly asking to get a gay marriage. Her marriages are completely unaffected by all this.

As a few others have pointed out, the same people carping about how Davis should have the right to not issue SSM licenses because of her religious beliefs would demand prison time for a Muslim who refuses to issue licenses to women at the DMV or to a Muslim or Jew who refuses to allow a seafood restaurant or BBQ joint to open because they offer up shellfish or pork products because those violate their religious beliefs. Or a Hindu who refuses to allow a steakhouse to open because it violates their religious beliefs.

Those wouldn’t be allowed to stand, and this shouldn’t be allowed either.

11 year old shoots 16 year old. Some are claiming this was a home invasion, but others are saying hold the phone.

Police believe two suspects had tried to break into the modest ranch-style home two times earlier in the day. On the third try, they were able to enter through the front door, Schellman said. There were no signs of forced entry.

Soon after the 16-year-old entered, the 11-year-old fired a single shot that struck him in the head, Schellman said. The teenager’s body was found in the front foyer, and Schellman said the shot may have scared away the second suspect, who was taken into custody a short time later. Schellman said that suspect, 22, was still in custody Friday, but has not been charged.

Some neighbors told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that they witnessed the shooting and there was no break-in.

Donna Jackson told the newspaper that she saw the 11-year-old shoot the 16-year-old at point-blank range as they talked near front door.

“It was not a break-in,” Jackson, 45, said. “He shot him in the head.”

Jazmyne Clark, 18, who lives two doors down from the shooting, said the 11-year-old was on the front porch when he told the 16-year-old to approach him. When the 16-year-old reached the front door, the younger boy shot him, Clark said.

“He was never in the house,” Clark told the newspaper. “He wasn’t breaking in at all. He was just trying to sell him his phone.”

Nuts. Just nuts.

And the right wing / NRA gun fetishists continue to deny that there’s a problem with firearms in the nation.

Every single hour more than 3 people use firearms to commit suicide or a homicide (2.5 for suicide, .75 homicide). Every hour. Every day. 24/7/365. Mental health is a huge issue, and yet nothing is being done.

11 year old shoots 16 year old. Some are claiming this was a home invasion, but others are saying hold the phone.

Nuts.

Goddamn it.

Absolutely. It amuses me how people want to liken someone discriminating to Civil Rights heroes. The Civil Rights movement wanted African-Americans to have the same rights as everyone else. Kim Davis wants to keep an outdated system. She most definitely more like George Wallace or the Montegomery bus driver than she is MLK or Rosa Parks. And anyone who deludes themselves otherwise shows how little they understand civil rights. Kim can believe whatever the hell she wants as a private citizen but as her county’s clerk in a state and nation that allows same sex marriage, she has to provide the certificate. If she’s that uncomfortable with it, that’s fine but she needs to resign so someone else can.

Yep. That’s what I don’t get about those who claim that “Gays want special rights.” Uh no, they want the same rights that you and your spouse do and that you take for granted because you’re straight. They claim SSM is “unnatural” and “against God’s laws”, well they claimed that about interracial marriage in many states pre-Loving and indeed for the longest time marrying outside your particular religion, socioeconomic, or ethnic group was frowned upon. It’s how me a descendant of a German Lutheran immigrant am Irish, German, Eastern European, Catholic, and how many people leading up to me married also married outside their class.

I ran across this guy’s story last week after encountering a reference to him in my book about white supremacists. I’d never heard of him, so I found it interesting.

Not sure why, but for some reason it made me think of you:

Prester John (Latin: Presbyter Johannes) is a legendary Christian patriarch and king popular in European chronicles and tradition from the 12th through the 17th century. He was said to rule over a “Nestorian” (Church of the East) Christian nation lost amid the Muslims and pagans of the Orient, in which the Patriarch of the Saint Thomas Christians resided. The accounts are varied collections of medieval popular fantasy, depicting Prester John as a descendant of the Three Magi, ruling a kingdom full of riches, marvels, and strange creatures.

At first, Prester John was imagined to reside in India; tales of the Nestorian Christians’ evangelistic success there and of Thomas the Apostle’s subcontinental travels as documented in works like the Acts of Thomas probably provided the first seeds of the legend. After the coming of the Mongols to the Western world, accounts placed the king in Central Asia, and eventually Portuguese explorers convinced themselves that they had found him in Ethiopia, which had been officially Christian since the 4th century. Prester John’s kingdom was thus the object of a quest, firing the imaginations of generations of adventurers, but remaining out of reach. He was a symbol to European Christians of the Church’s universality, transcending culture and geography to encompass all humanity, in a time when ethnic and inter-religious tension made such a vision seem distant.

I find it very amusing that most of the judges who have handed down rulings contrary to conservative desires have all been appointed by Republican presidents. The judge who shot down Intelligent Design in Dover, DE, was also a Republican appointee.

In this matter the judge has little choice. The Supreme Court told him what rules he must enforce and he is doing just that. What he thinks personally isn’t at issue; he’s got his orders. That’s one of the things this case is about: Proper orders. Sometimes you are given instructions you don’t agree with, and you just have to obey them.

It continues to amaze me that the ongoing historical revision of what side of the political axis that Fascism was on during its heyday and up until now.

Its almost like its just a denial that there was and is still to this day an anti-Capitalist right.

Its almost as if the only true right wingery is American style neo-liberalism which exists in a bubble, with European right wing Protestant and Catholic anti-consumerist, and very anti-immigrant being the exception to the rule, though in fact has been the rule itself for the majority of Conservative thought until the 1970’s and 80’s.

Taken out of context? What context? As he himself said, The picture speaks for itself.”

Meanwhile, District Attorney Michael Cassidy says he is going to review all cases Raymond Mott was part of and if Mott’s testimony was the critical factor the case is going to be dismissed or vacated.

Apparently Mott’s going to sue. I envision DA Cassidy answering the suit in court:

Judge: And Mr. Cassidy, I see you as having two motions?

DA Cassidy: Yes, Your Honor. On behalf of Jefferson Davis Parish*, my office moves for summary judgement in our favor. In addition, we move that your honor take judicial notice of the fact that Mr. Mott is a bigoted fucktard.

*: Most the “in court” exchange is in jest, but Lake Arthur really is in Jefferson Davis Parish. Some of this stuff you just can’t make up.

And they think National Socialism (Nazism) is a type of Socialism, while it is basically hard right ideology with a “Socialist” veneer.

And that their ideology is somehow immune to fascism. I might be special because I come from a country which paid dearly for siding with Germany during part of WWII, and that many of my generation got taught to recognize the fascist beast a mile away, but any, let me say that again, ANY ideology is susceptible to fascism or at least fascistoid tendencies.

They are called laws.

I do hope Mr. Hamdia doesn’t face repercussions for his good deed. Actually, the Palestinian population of Hebron should thank him profusely, as had that mob killed those yeshiva students, then Netanyahu would have put their city on lockdown and and then had the IDF go aggressively house-to-house. But thanks to one man’s smart thinking, that is not going to happen.

There will be a six-figure book deal; my money’s on John Fund as Davis’s ghost. There may even be one of those movies produced by gullibility trawlers like the one helmed by Rick Santorum. Anybody want to bet me that she doesn’t speak at next year’s Republican National Convention? You have made a star, Judge Bunning, and the rest of us have to live with her.

And then there’s this:

I do wonder about one thing, though. Suppose Davis announced that it was against her conscience and God’s authority for her to submit to Judge’s Bunning’s authority and go to jail. Could she go home, then?

Obama’s veto will stand up, but there will be no fillibuster. And this is good because it will require him to formally reject the advice of the Congress. Which means that when Iran cheats on the agreement it will be known who should be blamed.

So the batshit insane, war-mongering, fanatical collection of psychos you support as a political party will get the chance to bomb Persians they so desperately want.

Because the only option I hear out of the Republicans is “Kill ‘em all, let God sort ‘em out.”

My college girlfriend (well, more than that for 7 years) was of Finnish extraction. Her grandfather was caught in the woods one day felling the Czar’s timber. He was chased for hundreds of miles to the port in Helsinki where, as the ship pulled away from the docks the Russian police stood helpless on the docks. He was alleged to have made a, umh, Physical display of his contempt for the Russians but they were never willing to say exactly what he did.

He ended up in Minnesota where I met a very good young woman many years later.

No. There is a difference between them. Among the brands I’ve tried so far, I like Smirnoff the best, tho I have to try more brands…

Having tried most of the major brands, mt final conclusion is there is little difference between any of the triple distilled(or more) vodkas. My goto is Svedka, it is much better bargain than most of the others and right up there in quality. I actually prefer Finlandia straight up, but most of the time my vodka gets mixed with something else. Grey Goose and Belvedere are good but over priced. The rest like your Smirnoff, Absolut, Stoli, Skyy etc. are all pretty interchangeable for me.

Florida security guard admits killing unarmed black man: ‘I was arrested because of George Zimmerman’

“The reason the evidence was fabricated is because I’m white,” Kendle told jurors.

“The subjects I shot were African-American, I can prove that,” he continued. “What they’re not allowing me to tell you is that I was arrested because of the George Zimmerman shooting.”

[…]

Kendle told jurors he would not testify on his own behalf, but in opening statements he described Byrd and Smathers as “forward aggressors.”

“They forced me to survive,” Kendle said. “I’m paid to protect. Having no duty to retreat, I stood my ground.”

The landed aristocracy, rentier class, and the other majority holders of capital will always attempt game the system in their favor if given the chance.

Of course Marx didn’t see the election of people like FDR in the US or Clement Atley in the UK, who helped Capitalism from eating itself into oblivion.

The coup that put Pinochet in power over the legally elected Chilean Government. It lead to a series of far right wing governments in South America and the deaths of thousands of people whose only crime was to want their rights.

Had my family been Chilean in 1973, my parents would have been executed for union membership and my younger sisters adopted to good fascist parents. I would have been a toss up: at 10 years old I might have been seen as too old to save and executed with my parents.

Just one of Nixon and Kissenger’s many evil deeds.

How the hell can he say Obergefell was decided unlawfully. He can take fault with how Kennedy and the majority came to their conclusion but it’s not an unlawful decision at all simply because he has a problem with it. As the county clerk, Kim Davis’s job is to give marriage certificates for her county. Same sex marriage after the Obergefell decision is legal in her county, state, and country so yes she does Ben. Why don’t you stop being a pathetic hack and deal with it. I swear this guy is either the stupidest Harvard grad ever or he loves to play a big moron for the morons that read his stupid website.

Speaking of arguments, this passage in my current book could’ve come straight from the mouth of Pamela Geller if you changed Jew(ish) to Muslim and goy to dhimmi.

I’ve told you about my research regarding Russian antisemitism at the turn of the 19th and early 20th century, it’s the exact same crap which is why it’s maddening from the outside looking in to see a Jewish person such as Geller engage in it.

In regard to Iron Maiden’s upcoming tour for The Book of Souls, looks like Bruce Dickinson - the Iron Maiden Bruce Dickinson, not the Bruce Dickinson - will be handling pilot duties this time.

Iron Maiden have confirmed that they’ll be hitting the road next year for a huge The Book Of Souls world tour.

The band have revealed that pilot and frontman Bruce Dickinson will be jetting the group around in a Boeing 747-400, travelling over 55,000 miles to six of the seven continents. Now that is how you do a tour.

“When the opportunity arose from my friends at Air Atlanta Icelandic to lease a 747 for The Book of Souls World Tour, of course we jumped at the chance, who wouldn’t?” Bruce admits. “The greatest benefit of travelling in a 747 is that because of its colossal size and freight capacity we can carry our stage production and all our stage equipment and desks in the cargo hold without having to make any of the immense structural modifications needed to do this on the previous 757, the extent of which fans will have noted on the Flight 666 DVD. Although in reality we cannot carry much more gear the savings in complexity, time and cost make using the 747 even more practical. All we will need to do is “paint” it and move a few seats around, with the added advantage that there is much more room for band and crew - our Krew can almost get a row of seats each to catch up on sleep on the flights! Furthermore, it is marginally faster o.85 MACH and the range of around 7000NM (13,000 km) is much greater which means we will not have to make the refuelling stops we needed to with the 757.
“However, even though we have worked out the logistics of taking a plane of that immense size out on tour, I still have to learn to fly it before we can go anywhere! So, I’m currently doing my training to qualify as a pilot and Captain on a Boeing 747. I’m doing this at Cardiff Aviation, my aircraft maintenance facility in Wales, where we recently took possession of a rather splendid 747 simulator which I can’t wait to get practising on!”

re: #351 subterraneanhomesickalien

I don’t think the god thing comes into play here, because I don’t think wingnuts think Iranians or Muslims in general are human.

It would be harder to drop a bomb on a sleeping child if you think of them as your equivalent in terms of their basic human right not to die in a midnight bombing raid.

Well some sociopaths wouldn’t care anyways probs. See Kristoll, William.

That kind of mindset that was my big wake up call about how fucked up conservatives were becoming, at least when it came to people of Arab and Persian ethnicity.

I’m pretty sure I mentioned this before, but I had to stop hanging out with a good friend from high school (I was the best man at his wedding) when Iraq War 2 broke out. I was with him and some of his acquaintances on the first night of the US bombing Baghdad.

We had to stop what we were doing so they could all turn Fox News, crack some beers, and watch it live like it was a fucking NFL game. I was stunned. People were literally dying live on a TV screen and these guys were having the times of their lives. USA #1 kind of bullshit.

What made it even more surreal is that the activity that we stopped was, believe it or not, Dungeons and Dragons. We were getting back into it as a nostalgic lark. I also find it a bit ironic that these guys were willing to play a game in which radicallly different races have to work together, yet were more than happy to watch those people get slaughtered on live TV.

The final kicker was when I brought up a mutual good buddy of ours from high school, who in the intervening 19 years had come out as gay. “Eh, that faggot is probably dead from AIDS, by now” was the response. I knew then it was time to bail.

The kicker is this guy runs a flower shop. At some point in the near future, you will see him in the news for refusing to supply flowers to a gay wedding.

So, yeah: that’s when I discovered what a shit show conservatism was becoming, and the vile influence Fox News has on these people.

You are a coward if you continuously allow these cretins to use these inverted analogies in which the oppressor becomes the victim and the victim become the oppressor.

And this is just what the media in this country does in order to make themselves feel like they are above a frey in which “both sides do it”.
