Donald Trump Does the Bible Pandering Dance at Values Voter Summit

Much pander, so nice

Here’s Donald Trump waving a Bible in the air and assuring the far right religious fanatics at the Values Voter Summit that he’s a really nice person. And he apparently doesn’t think anyone might conclude he’s nakedly pandering to this much-needed right wing voting bloc.

At one point, after wondering why we even need to hold an election considering that he is leading in all the polls, Trump took a moment to assure the audience that he is actually a nice person.

“People were not sure I was a nice person,” he said, “and I am. I am. I am. I am. I’m a giving person. I believe in God, I believe in the Bible. I’m a Christian. I have a lot of reasons. I love people.”

Trump later closed out his speech by hoisting his Bible in the air and declaring “this is the key.”

Also, too, when he’s president the War on Christmas stops on Day One…

Would that be like all of the people you’ve stiffed by declaring bankruptcy and not returning any of the money you took from them?

My theory: this particular constituency within the awesome GOP tent utterly lacks an ability to discern who is pandering to them. The real fool is anyone seeking the GOP nomination next year who DOESN’T attend a gathering like this for a little song and dance.

It’s a good thing there aren’t any Jews in this country, because they might be offended by being treated as untouchables, like the Muslims, atheists, and Catholics.

one thing I’ve learned, is that modern Evangelical Christians love war. They love to wage it on brown skinned people. And they love the feeling of having an imaginary war waged on they themselves by godless atheist liberal heathens.

To them, JEEZUS loves war.

A good try, but his shallowness doesn’t match their shallowness. He doesn’t speak the language of VVS fanatics: the code-words and phrases that show you’re part of the in-group that understands the signs and wonders demonstrated how doomed-yet-bleesed the USA is.

Ted Cruz, on the other hand, nailed it.

two assertions that will disappear instantly from a fox news comment thread:

1. democratic socialism and stalinist totalitarian state socialism are not the same thing. democratic socialism has been practiced by every western nation for decades now

2. it’s perfectly obvious that the dixiecrats left the democratic party and joined the republicans

in the meanwhile, blatantly racist statements and toilet humor are apparently just fine. even “liberals” can post anti republican statements, as long as they don’t broach the forbidden topics

Even though I’m an atheist and I’m also bad at public speaking, I know exactly how to pander to the VVS attendees. Something like this would be a good start:

It is anti-Latino.”

I’m guessing they have lay communion ministers, armed with reserved sacrament, in each section. They’ll count on the fact that only those who are Catholic or have strong catholic leanings would come forward in such a situation. If you act respectfully they’ll let any questions slide like at most weddings or funerals.

In situations like this one, I usually go forward with my arms crossed in front of me and ask the priest for a blessing instead since I know my understanding of the sacrament is a little too Anglican for most priests. We’re just different enough… ;)

Ah, no. The Pharisee’s were a specific Jewish movement in Jesus’ time that emphasized a holiness based on following all of the 613 commandments of the Torah as understood using the Mishnah. There were arguments as to how well they full-fulled that task, but the real problems were with those who were hypocritical about their holiness - like Trump - rather than with the Pharisee’s in general. In Matthew, Jesus says that the Pharisee’s are holy, it’s just that he expects his disciples to be even more holy than them.

Call him a hypocrite, which is certainly is. But he is not a Jew of one of the Pharisee schools.

And the spare was flat (I resisted the urge to say “you are supposed to check the air pressure in your spare regularly”).

well, absolutely true, and i was thinking about that after i posted the comment

however, i meant it in the sense of the popular and very common misconception of what is meant by a pharisee and not the historical pharisees

i sometimes explain that when jesus says “and do not be like the pharisees who…” he means don’t be like those guys who make a big show of praying, not that doing this is the definition of the word pharisee

the pharisees got the last laugh historically, iirc, since they basically inherited jewish religious practice after the sadducees were dis-empowered by the romans’ destruction of the temple, and their direct descendants were the ones who wrote down the unwritten laws they placed so much faith in in the talmud

Correct me if I’ve been mis-(self-)educated, also, but I had developed the understanding that the Pharisees are a kind of theological forefather to today’s Orthodox Judaism.

“Pharisee” in common use by Christians has always sounded like dog-whistle anti-Semitism, much the same as “Moneylender”. Which is to say, “Somebody who’s fer shur gunna get their ass kicked when Jesus comes back!!Eleventy!!!”

I stopped bothering when I discovered that the cookies had no flavor.

So you’re implying that the key for Catholics regaining dominance would be to start making communion wafers taste like bacon?

I have no idea where that littlegreenfootballsweblog in the link thing came from.
I checked my comment and it’s not there, so I can’t get rid of it.

After the Roman’s leveled the temple due to yet another rebellion, the survivors were predominantly Pharisees who, over the next few centuries wrote down the various oral laws. First was the Mishnah - which is what Jesus would have been familiar with and was what was being argued about in the interactions between him and the Pharisees - and later the Talmud which is another several layers of commentary on top of the Mishnah. This understanding of the law combined with the synagogue became the basis of modern Orthodox Rabbinic Judaism.

In the Gospel of John, which was written after the break with Synagogue Judaism, it’s a major dog whistle, though even there some are presented better than others. In Luke/Acts, it’s more a problem of the author having very little knowledge of Judaism. Matthew, being the most Jewish positive, has the most good things to say about the Pharisees and uses them often as the minimum of what a good Jew should be.

I love to play, and always have loved to play guitar. You know that feeling you have when it’s working?
I lost a new friend in July whom was going to front the band we had formed. He was a large man and had a big voice. After 8 months in our completely new startup band he was hitting his stride and as I was visiting my sons in Colorado in July he was found by his son back here. Died in his sleep. At 48 fucking years. It shook me. We were set to play a festival August 15th. We are still getting the pieces back together, and hope to play to happy dancing people New Years Eve. New main voice and we are hoping the drummer who shows up this Sunday is legit. We all sing a song or 3. At my age, 64 years and counting, I try to remember to count my blessings. People say they want to play. Tell me how much they want to play. I tell them, for all I know I could stoke out tonight. I wanna rock. Believe me, I know exactly how you feel.
Don’t stop playing. Put a CD on and play with the pros.

oh boy! Daniel Webster got the most not-Boehner votes last time!

I think Democrats need to make some kind of deal with the candidate who is the most fire-breathing conservative in the House: “We just want you to promise that you’ll continue to be an unredeemable asshole. And we’ll help put you over the top.”
