You’re obviously overlooking the fact that as soon as a law-abiding gun owner shoots someone else in anything other than self-defense, they become a criminal retroactive to their birth. Thus, although at 10AM PDT on Wednesday Farook and Malik were law-abiding gun owners whose right to own their weapons was beyond question and worthy of defense, by 11:00 they had become life-long lawbreakers who should never have had weapons, although it was initially unclear whether that was because they were terrorists who should never have had guns in the first place, or mentally ill people who should never have had guns in the first place, even though the NRA is blocking legislation to prevent either of those groups from being able to buy any guns they want at anytime.

That clear it up?

Here’s the thing…the GOP is advising down ticket candidates to be more like Trump…yes…more. like. Trump.

In a seven-page, confidential memo that imagines Trump as the party’s nominee, the head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee urges candidates to adopt many of Trump’s tactics, issues and approaches — right down to adjusting the way they dress and how they use Twitter.

And they should simultaneously distance themselves from him without looking like they totally disagree with the “wacky things” he says about women, for example…just wacky.

Still, Baker sees limits to being like Trump. He writes that it is prudent for Senate candidates to craft their own political brands distinct from Trump’s and to distance themselves by quickly condemning his more controversial comments, such as “wacky things about women.” He cautions candidates against “piling on” Trump, however, warning that Republicans up and down the ballot would suffer if the GOP vote is divided or depressed.

That GOP memo gets very funny if we run it though a de-euphemizer:

“Trump is appealing to the base of bigots and fools we have created with decades of propaganda. He does this by being a fool and a bigot. You need to appeal to these same people using less direct language than Trump.”

That might work for the down-ticket races the memo is specifically addressing, but it suggests the GOP really is likely to end up with Trump as the nominee.

Something struck me as interesting, in comparing the attacks in France this year, and the SB attack and other mass shootings - in the Train attack this summer, as well as at least one of the Paris attacks last month, the shooters failed because their guns jammed. Compare this with SB, and other mass shootings in the US. How many of them had guns jamming?

It occurs to me that in France, practicing with a Kalashnikov or AR15 without getting arrested would be a tough thing to do, whereas here it’s no big deal, just go to a gun range, or some open land someplace. You can not only practice with A gun, you can practice with THE gun, anytime you want. The more you practice, the less likely jams would be, plus if your gun does jam, you can always pull out another of the easily-obtained weapons Americans can buy in almost unlimited numbers

Mind you, I have no idea whether this hypothesis - that stringent gun control increases the likelihood of gun failure in mass shootings - is true or not. But it’s an interesting question.

Missouri Firearms Bill Would Make Guns As Difficult to Access As Abortions
“A new bill from State Rep. Stacey Newman attempts to tackle Missouri’s gun violence problem by applying the restrictions placed on women seeking abortion services to all prospective firearm purchasers”

House Bill 1397 says that before Missourians could buy a gun, they’d have to:

— Meet with a licensed physician to discuss the risks of gun ownership at least 72 hours before attempting to buy a gun and obtain a written notice approval.
— Buy the gun from a licensed gun dealer located at least 120 miles from the purchaser’s legal residence.
— Review the medical risks associated with firearms, including photographs of fatal firearm injuries, and the alternatives to purchasing a firearm, including “materials about peaceful and nonviolent conflict resolution,” with the gun dealer orally and in writing.
— Watch a 30-minute video about fatal firearm injuries. (This requirement mirrors House Bill 124 from last year, which would have required women to watch a video with information about abortion they’re already required to receive from doctors orally and in writing.)
