But if Obama nominates a liberal, then the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee should hold a hearing and then vote that person down on a party-line vote.

Too late. You just got done saying it doesn’t matter who he nominates. Don’t try to pretend your party will actually give that person an honest look.

Your party can’t refuse to allow him to nominate somebody. Refusing to hold hearings to act in the “advise and consent” role will do massive damage to the GOP.

Do you not see that?

I do not propose refusing to hold hearings, at least not for the first nominee. But no Republican should vote for any liberal Obama appointee, Whatever those outside the party think of that is their business, but maintaining party unity on this has to be the paramount Republican concern. Of course this is all very one-sided. If a conservative SC vacancy needs to be filled, the GOP position is that the replacement must be another jurist so arch-conservtive that they disapprove of fire and the wheel.

If a liberal or moderate SC vacancy needs to be filled, the GOP position is that this should be done by a conservative, because fuck you.

Thurgood Marshall was replaced by Clarence Thomas. That is sufficient justification for Obama to name just about anyone to replace Scalia.

The GOP has the votes in the Senate to have things their way. May they choke on their rotten power.

re: #188 Dark_Falcon

Short answer: Because Republicans don’t want him to have that pick and we can block him on this matter.

The problem with all-or-nothing positions is that they are so hard to pull off that they almost always end up with nothing.

Refusal to do the job may be fine for Senators not seeking re-election, or who sit in strong seats. But there are some close seats, and the real risk of this position becomes losing those seats.

So you are advocating holding a position that increases the likelihood the next president will be Democratic and will be nominating into a much more supportive Senate.

As I said, the problem with holding all-or-nothing positions…

I do not propose refusing to hold hearings, at least not for the first nominee. But no Republican should vote for any liberal Obama appointee, Whatever those outside the party think of that is their business, but maintaining party unity on this has to be the paramount Republican concern. We just won’t hold together if it isn’t.

Okay, look.

Let’s say worst comes to worst and next January it’s Dr. Donald Trump standing there taking the oath of office.

Do you really trust Trump’s judgment to select a for-life Supreme Court appointment?

The single best thing that could happen for the US is for the GOP to break apart into its various constituencies. That pretty much is the only way to get the neo-confederates, white nationalists, women-haters, theocrats and various other bigoted cranks out of the party.

What I’d love for Abe, Teddy, and Ike to rise from the dead and smack some sense into them. We need an opposition party. Not a reactionary party that just proposes we do the opposite of whatever the President proposes because their base is filled with hate for the President.

I mean if they said, we won’t let the President choose someone we feel is too extreme or unqualified for the job, that would be fine. But that’s not what McConnell said. He said they will vote against anyone the President chooses and they also started this lie that the President doesn’t appoint people during election years. I guarantee you if Scalia had died in 2008, Bush would have picked a replacement. As I got at already, we have actual examples of a President who lost re-election appointing someone and that someone, oh only John Marshall, the most influential justice of all time possibly.

Reagan’s mafia connections mostly had to do with his tenure as head of the Screen Actors Guild, during which he did the bidding of mobbed-up Hollywood wheeler-dealer Lou Wasserman. Many of his LA pals, like Walter Annenberg and Holmes Tuttle were also quite shady, to say the least.

If you wanted to head a Hollywood union in those days, you had to be willing to deal with the 5 Families (New York) or the Outfit (Chicago). Annenberg had connections to both mafia branches, his father Moses having known Johnny Torrio and Al Capone personally.

If the Republicans want to argue whoever Obama picks is too extreme well that’s legitimate but the difference is I know Obama won’t choose an extremist like Robert Bork for the job because Obama is much more moderate than Reagan was especially when it comes to the judiciary. I’ll recommend The Brethren to anyone. I know Woodward’s a bit of a jerk but it’s a fascinating inside look at the court. I believe Justice Potter Stewart was the source. Burger comes off like a real jerk to me in it.

Mr. President. Nominate Bill Nye or Neil D. Tyson to the. SCOTUS. Pretty please.

They aren’t qualified. You have to have a law degree to be a Supreme Court Justice, at least as a practical matter. And for the past couple decades that law degree has needed to come from an Ivy League university, too.

Liar For President!

Self-funding? Not so fast, Donald
Trump continues to brag about funding his own campaign, but that isn’t really the case. The campaign spent $12.4 million last year and raised $6.6 million from people not named Donald Trump. Trump’s own contributions totaled merely $218,567.01. Furthermore, the campaign paid millions to Trump’s own companies for payroll, meals and lodging.
Trump did lend his campaign $12.6 million, but that’s fully repayable until 20 days after the election. And let’s not forget the big “DONATE” button in the top right corner of his campaign website.

Ford lacked the ability to do much about inflation, so it fell to Jimmy Carter to appoint Paul Volker to actually solve the problem. And it was Volker who mainly solved the problem, with Carter and Reagan both contributing mainly by making sure the rest of the government did not obstruct the Fed. It took a brutal recession to bring inflation back under control, too. May such mistakes as those that set such inflation loose never be made here again.

No you dont.
Are there qualifications to be a Justice? Do you have to be a lawyer or attend law school to be a Supreme Court Justice?
The Constitution does not specify qualifications for Justices such as age, education, profession, or native-born citizenship. A Justice does not have to be a lawyer or a law school graduate, but all Justices have been trained in the law. Many of the 18th and 19th century Justices studied law under a mentor because there were few law schools in the country.

The last Justice to be appointed who did not attend any law school was James F. Byrnes (1941-1942). He did not graduate from high school and taught himself law, passing the bar at the age of 23.
Robert H. Jackson (1941-1954). While Jackson did not attend an undergraduate college, he did study law at Albany Law School in New York. At the time of his graduation, Jackson was only twenty years old and one of the requirements for a law degree was that students must be twenty-one years old. Thus rather than a law degree, Jackson was awarded with a “diploma of graduation.” Twenty-nine years later, Albany Law School belatedly presented Jackson with a law degree noting his original graduating class of 1912.

Point missed. You’ll oppose anyone. Even if Jesus himself came back to life and the President chose him.

But that said, Ronald Reagan was no friend of the Mafia as president. It was Reagan who appointed Rudy Giuliani as US Attorney for the for the Southern District of New York and Rudy proved to be a man who hammered the 5 Families.

And….today’s Rudi is a prick!

Do they have any idea how arrogant that sounds? I mean love your country, that’s great but I really hate this idea that America’s success as a nation is divine in why.

No. Because we are the best.

re: #436 HappyWarrior

He’s just so fucking wrong. And for starters, the Democrats did not tell Reagan when the vacancy opened up that they would oppose anyone Reagan nominated. They opposed Bork based on principle. If the Republicans want to argue whoever Obama picks is too extreme well that’s legitimate but the difference is I know Obama won’t choose an extremist like Robert Bork for the job because Obama is much more moderate than Reagan was especially when it comes to the judiciary. The names floated around are NOT liberal equivalents of Robert Bork.

Well said but facts don’t matter to Republicans.

re: #254 Dark_Falcon

I do not propose refusing to hold hearings, at least not for the first nominee. But no Republican should vote for any liberal Obama appointee, Whatever those outside the party think of that is their business, but maintaining party unity on this has to be the paramount Republican concern. We just won’t hold together if it isn’t.

GOP uber alles.

We know God picked us, because he gave us the best neighbors (Mexicans, Canadians and Fish), the most diverse landscape, and a location accessible only to the most energetic risk-takers.
