I sat down and watched this entire rally earlier. I’m sold.

Didn’t know anything about Kaine until yesterday, but the more I read about him, and after watching him speak today, Hillary made a fantastic choice with him. He’s warm, relatable, and comes across as genuine and earnest. His background is impressive too. I like him.

Targetpractice  Jul 23, 2016 • 2:28:48pm

I’ve been hearing nothing from concern-trolling since yesterday about how Kaine isn’t the guy the party needed to win over progressives, how they’re going to be the lynchpin to the party’s hopes to retake Congress, and how Hillary should have gone with Warren or Brown.

My response to that is that Kaine is the guy progressives need, not the one they wanted. Just looking at the way the GOP is scrambling to find something to hit Kaine with shows that they were not really prepared for taking on a VP nominee who has built a solid record of accomplishment without major controversy. When their leading line of attack is he took tickets to a basketball tournament, you know they’ve got nothin’.

I like the moment at 39:33 where he turns around to Hillary and says ‘This is fun!’

They just saw moderate former Virginia governor and didn’t bother actually learning about the man. They didn’t bother looking at his start as a civil rights lawyer in Richmond, then his role as mayor improving racial relations and the economic situation in that city, and the great job he’s done here as Lt Governor and Governor. They also fixated on the personal pro life bit but ignored that he never interfered with women’s health here as governor. He’s a good pick. I’m glad that many people here have realized a lot of their reservations were unfounded.

This pick for me anyway is a mark of her confidence she can beat Trump. Not to sell this man short, I mean to say no extraordinary measure, no adjustment was required to answer what Trump has done so far. This pick is her read of us the voters not Trump the opponent.

He’s another from the Biden tradition. I have to admit I didn’t see it before today but he’s alot like Joe in the sense that he’s a people person who sees his place in politics as a role to help people. They’re both fairly regular guys too. Kaine always to me as a Virginia voter felt more relatable than Mark Warner did.

Not trying to concern-troll, I am genuinely curious. I know that participating in political activity while in uniform is a super-duper no-no. How does it work if you’re up on stage and your dad is utilizing your service for political gains? Okay because you’re not on duty and you’re not yourself in uniform or portraying the activity as being carried out as part of your official duties, I am guessing?

re: #11 Charles Johnson

This is one thing that made the Trump convention very different. The Trump Camp was totally indifferent to the platform. So party activists were able to write one of the most conservative platforms in history. Not with Trump’s backing but because he simply didn’t care. With one big exception: Trump’s team mobilized the nominee’s traditional mix of cajoling and strong-arming on one point: changing the party platform on the assistance to Ukraine against Russian military operations in eastern Ukraine.

IIRC the ban is on the actual service member. As long as they’re active duty they’re not allowed to do political stuff, especially in uniform. There’s nothing against their family member mentioning their service.

Exactly. I think that hits the nail on the head. He’s not as flashy or as firey as Warren or Brown could have been, but he’s extremely pragmatic, and he’s arguably the best strategic choice; Warren and Brown are from conservative states, and need to stay in the Senate.

I don’t think that is true. I think he can bring in the wavering blue collar workers, can be very effective with the Hispanic vote (GOTV). He is the type that has almost universal appeal. Maybe even with a stray republican or two.

Maybe she would have these votes anyway, but I think he can make the difference on election day bringing them to the polls.

I do not believe Hillary thinks this election is in the bag. Not now anyway.
The old saying: There are only two ways to run a campaign, you are either running scared or you are running unopposed, applies here.

Personally, I think it’s fair to say that Warren is the person that the GOP wanted to run against. They wanted to paint her a liar, they wanted to paint her as inexperienced, they wanted to slag her with “SOCIALIST!!!” for the next three months, but most importantly they wanted to scare people with a two-woman ticket being “too much progress too quickly.”

52
SoundGuy 2016  Jul 23, 2016 • 3:10:42pm

Kaine wasn’t a pick necessarily to beat Trump. They’re thinking long game. He’ll probably be a great VP and could easily move to POTUS.

But fuckin A they need to win. Trump is already a disaster: as POTUS he’d cause immense damage.

Scott Brown only won because he was a fairly popular state senator and there was very low turnout for the special election. The republicans in MA don’t have a very deep bench. There are 6 total republican state senators and none of them has the charisma of a wildabeast.

It’s again the contrast with Obama and McCain/Romney. Obama chose a running mate that he felt could definitely step in and do the job and Clinton did the same thing here with Kaine. He’s a seasoned professional. He was winning state wide elections even when this state’s electorate was more conservative than it is now.

That’s a great article:

Interesting takeouts for me:
After Kaine was picked he called Bernie Sanders.

and this:

And the president never hid how much he liked Kaine—eight years ago when he was on Obama’s shortlist, David Axelrod remembers the Virginia senator telling him and David Plouffe, “I’m flattered to be considered, but if I were Barack, I wouldn’t pick me. We’re too much alike.”
Kaine later made the same point directly to Obama. “We’re the same person,” he joked. And not just because both their mothers were from El Dorado, Kansas.

I don’t know if I’m getting manic the older I get, the hyper connectivity to current events, or just the cycle. But it seems things are more dynamic: people dying at the hands of police, police being shot, horrific mass shootings, a fascist GOP candidate… and the GOP candidate is an immense clown that makes me laugh, Milo getting booted off Twitter, now Kaine looking like a really solid move.

Everything just seems extreme right now. Very high and very low.

Reading through this just now. My education in AML is pretty broad-stroke but from where I sit, the whole situation absolutely reeks of money laundering.

If you have to move piles of illicit cash around, your absolute perfect choice for a conduit would be a highly public blowhard something-aire who refuses to disclose his assets, who works in real estate development-slash-branding.

I mean, christ, cheating suppliers and contractors isn’t just a bad thing Trump does. It’s his business model. Who knows how much filthy cash could flow through that machine?

He’ll probably make a feeble attempt to get a credential, possibly even stupidly trying to get someone else’s or a fake one. Not sure if his connections are good enough for one of the alt-Right groups to try to get him in.

Aside from that, he can simply nibble at the edges and try to play provocateur again with some toadies in town or along the edges of one of the demonstrations. Try to make the impression that he is an important part of the anti-Clinton movement and thus deserving of more grift dollars.

If Warren had been Hillary’s pick, the immediate sentiment would have been that it was her “reward” for MA. That she’d stabbed Bernie, the “true progressive,” in the back at Hillary’s orders and this was her payment. Rather than being the beacon for progressives to flock to the ticket, it would be seen as the final insult that forever tainted Warren in their eyes.

Yeah that too. I liked the idea that Warren owned Sanders her support in Massachusetts. It was like yeah because Bernie did so much to get Warren elected and he’s done so much for her and other progressive Democrats. That’s what I think I tried getting through to my bro when he complained about the SDs. I explained nicely to him that Bernie doesn’t seem to value getting other like minded people elected and that’s not a quality we should want in our nominee.

Up here, it’s the opposite: In the southern part of the state, we’re reasonably secure from wildfires, but up north in the rural backwoods, it can and does happen.

Well, both northern and central CA can have them. Hell, they can have them here too. There’s the Oakland fires, which are kind of famous.

That being said, in my particular portion of the bay, it’d have to be pretty bad to threaten our town. We just got the wind-driven smoke.

According to what I see in the database search, Chuck C’s rating floats around 1800-1890 which is hardly the performance of a chess master. He’s closer to a class “B” player.

The spouse is pointing out to me that one of the memorable things about the Obama administration is how amazing it’s been to have a formidable four-person team in action at the White House. We have the VP as a vital partner and backup for POTUS, able to step in and represent us both home and abroad. We have a First Lady AND a Second Lady who each have offices and initiatives, and they have a great working partnership.

Will be interesting to watch how the dynamics will grow with the Clintons and the Kaines. And it will be wonderful if the Obamas and the Bidens keep working with the new team, so we can keep Joe on the Cancer Moonshot and Michelle & Dr. Jill working with the military families. And the Let’s Move campaign!

Will also be fun to see if the Clintons keep the White House garden and the brewery going.

Ok, on Facebook, even after a huge write up by Jim Wright of Stonekettle Station, there are Berners bitching about Kaine pushing right to work laws and being for TTP and fracking. Honest to christ, Jim laid out the man’s whole backround and all they can do is bitch and then add, “more will be revealed”. Looks like I get to unfollow liberals now too. These Fucking People…..

One very good example why they say to never talk politics (and religion and…)!

People lose their minds over it all and hold it against each other, even in families as many here have mentioned.

Also one good example to like a good politician. All the crap you have to go through to run is not for the average person, even if they think it is all so simple. Think what they hear about everything.

They’re assholes. They really are. They never cared about the Democratic party. Just hijacking it to push their own crap. And then they cry about how the mean old DNC treated them. They’re a bunch of fucking brats who are too pigheaded to have an actual competent party so they thought they’d hijack the DNC and then when the DNC predictably defended itself, they got pissy.

The Rage Furby really lets his racism and antisemitism hang out in this interview. He’s getting very comfortable with not trying to hide it any more, as he hangs out with more and more white supremacist types.

It sounds like the Sandbaggers got a pledge to eliminate the superdelegates who are not elected officials… contingent on a later DNC vote. Which should be scheduled for the Twelfth of Never.

Edit: Here’s the Washington Post writeup:

According to the new rules, approved by a vote of 158 to 6, Democrats will appoint a Unity Commission of 21 members “no later than 60 days” after the general election, chaired by Clinton supporter Jennifer O’Malley Dillon and vice-chaired by Sanders supporter and former Communications Workers of America president Larry Cohen. That commission would report by Jan. 1, 2018, and get a vote on its proposals by the next meeting of the Democratic National Committee, long before the 2020 primaries.

Confession: Until 2008 I never really cared for Biden (in fact, during the Clarence Thomas hearings I wanted to kick his sorry Delaware as—but that’s another story), but when I found out he was the “least wealthy” (net worth under $200,000) member of the Senate I gotta admit I started liking the guy for that alone. I’d taken it for granted that any pol from Delaware had to have multiple Swiss and offshore bank accounts filled to the brim with Dow Chemical and Limited Liability HQ money. The rest was puppy love history, and the occasional facepalm.

I don’t even mean internet memes in the sense of fads/jokes/soundbites, I mean literal memes, ‘an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation.’ The normalization of right-wing sociopathy, the demonization of empathy, diplomacy, and intellectualism, the rising xenophobia and mass gaslighting, all of that shit.

They’ve rebuild the memetics of the entire US politic system, for the worse, to the point that open and unabashed racism is almost a prerequisite for support from half the country now.
