Former Breitbart Spox: Meetings With Stephen Bannon Sounded Like White Supremacists Talking

Politics • Views: 44,207

The former spokesman for Breitbart “News,” Kurt Bardella, is speaking out about the ugly ideology of Donald Trump’s new campaign chief, Stephen Bannon: Former Breitbart Staffer to Powerhouse Politics: Bannon Ran Meetings That Sounded Like White Supremacists Talking.

“If anyone sat there and listened to that call, you’d think that you were attending a white supremacist rally,” said Bardella, citing what he called Bannon’s “nationalism and hatred for immigrants, people coming into this country to try to get a better life for themselves.”

“This is someone who has a very low moral compass,” he said of Bannon, “and the idea that this is the type of person that Donald Trump, as the Republican nominee, as president, would have closest to him is very disturbing.”

Bardella joined this week’s episode of “Powerhouse Politics” podcast with ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl and ABC News Deputy Political Director Shushannah Walshe to discuss the recent shakeup in the Trump campaign.

“I think it’s incredibly concerning and dangerous actually to have someone have this kind of influence with the person who is running for president of the United States, who would be a top adviser if he were to win the election,” he cautioned.

Turning the name “Hillary Clinton” into “lying killer” isn’t a stumble of the tongue, it is your tongue leaping out of your mouth, falling down a flight of stairs and being impaled on the upturned stem of a broken wine glass dropped by your live-in cousin during one of his infamous two-in-the-morning basement benders.

I actually think the Trumpkins’ attitude is much worse. Wallace wanted black people to “know their place”. Today’s right-wingers don’t want them to have a place.

I won’t lie, I’m not a big fan of the Trump statues.

It’s complex and I can see why people are laughing and why people feel like he deserves it. At the same time, it’s body shaming and that’s really not cool.

I’m not going to tell other people they shouldn’t laugh, but I wish other folks would do me (and other people like me) the courtesy of not shoving our faces in it. (And that includes the people who put the statues out in public in the first place, so this shouldn’t be read as directed at Lizards here.)

It’s briefly funny, but ultimately involves a grandiose missing of the point. Trump could be Eugen Sandow and he’d still be disgusting.

Cheap shots are something we need less of, because cheap shots are precisely what get people like Trump public validity.

re: #64 Nyet

How long does it take from start to finish?

I started this one in …March? Depending on how much I work on it… I’m roughly a third finished, minus the white and the beads. (Order goes all other colors -> white -> beads -> backstitching, of which there is minimal.) Probably another 6 months at least. It’s been hit or miss lately how much I want to work on it. The silks have made it complicated (they’re overdyed and I’m OCD enough to want to match the colors up so you can’t tell where I changed thread). There’s a few spots where I will have to drop back down but I want to finish the border with the silks before I go do the leaves down at the bottom with it because of that reason.

I am probably overthinking this but it is the sort of hobby that lends itself to that very easily.

One of Franklin Foer’s stories about Manafort mentioned that Manafort’s candidate’s rhetoric against NATO was stirring up crowds. It said the US ambassador (or whatever diplomat) called Manafort in and asked him to get the candidate to tone it down, for the safety of the troops, and Manafort refused.

On the one hand, I agree that the safety of reporters is important.

On the other hand, imagine what Trump’s campaign rhetoric would be like if he knew he was only being covered by the friendliest media outlets, who could be depended on to conceal anything really really bad.

I won’t lie, I’m not a big fan of the Trump statues.

It’s complex and I can see why people are laughing and why people feel like he deserves it. At the same time, it’s body shaming and that’s really not cool.

It seems to me a literal depiction of Trump wearing the Emperor’s New Clothes.

Ultimately, reporters choose to cover Mr. Trump’s campaign, in the same way reporters choose to cover war zones or riots.

(Speaking of war zones, NPR sends its reporters to the same sort of training used for war zone coverage before sending them to Trump rallies).

My wife and I have held long arguments over whether covering Mr. Trump and his supporters is a good thing or not. (I think so, she thinks not. She believes that this is only leading to the breakdown of society, I am of the opinion it helps identify the people that mainstream conservatives, liberals, and libertarians should marginalise; we cannot ostracise them if they are not out in the open.

It could still be recorded by static feed, but it shouldn’t be broadcast live, it shouldn’t be rewarded the way that is currently happening. There’s no need to expose reporters to that level of abject abuse.

On Charles C. Johnson going to Hungary, is that to meet with folk from its racist and fascist party (Jobbik), that became the third largest party recently? I get the impression he is a fellow traveller in the alt-right “movement” (think toilets). (He certainly couldn’t be a thinker in that movement; even for a hateful group like the alt-right, a certain amount of intelligence is required to come up with a philosophy. I really don’t see Charles C. Johnson as a mental giant that would qualify for Mensa membership.)

It’s different from going to a war zone in several aspects. When going to a war zone the danger is explicit and upfront, there’s danger pay involved and the reporters who go don’t expect to become part of the story, they don’t expect to be made combatants. Sure, it happens, they are sometimes targeted and killed, but there’s supposed to be a difference between domestic politics and actual warfare. This is like going to cover a dog show, having it turn into an illegal dog fight and then finding out the show organizer has decided that you’re now one of the dogs. And while the reporters who continue to cover Trump should know what they’re in for now that doesn’t make it right, there are still external career pressures being put on them that may be affecting their judgement.

The people who sign the reporters’ checks, who send them into this shit need to be the adults here, who step in and say the potential cost has now far exceeded whatever story value might have once existed. The fact that Trump is explicitly targeting the press corps shouldn’t just be a warning sign, it should serve as the trigger mechanism that causes press & media managers to reassess their role and what exactly it is that they’re rewarding. There’s a fundamental difference between covering something newsworthy and feeding your people into the grasp of an ever more unstable monster who is overtly threatening their health and safety.

As far as identifying those we need to marginalize we don’t need the press at his rallies to do that, and that really shouldn’t be their job. I mean, I guess you can shoehorn that into the rubric of informing the public but there are other means to accomplish this without deploying reporters as bait for violent assault.

re: #92 goddamnedfrank

I think at this point, anyone covering Mr. Trump should be aware of how the press is treated and should expect they are, if not in danger, held in contempt.

The press built this guy’s campaign, they can hardly claim to “not know” the dangers of covering it. Katy Tur, who has been covering it since the beginning, ought to be receiving combat pay from NBC. She has been there before the campaign went into explicit fascism; even so, she knows what she is covering.

Edit: for that matter, every reporter that goes into a war zone knows he or she is in mortal danger. Any reporter going into a Trump rally should by now know the same.

goddamnedfrank  Aug 19, 2016 • 1:44:52am

So the question becomes how the hell does Trump expect to shore up white men while making inroads with women and minorities?

The answer is he doesn’t. If his support with white men is starting to show cracks while he’s down by 8 points nationally, polling 0 percent with blacks in many cases and with less than a hundred days left, he’s just fucked. That’s why you’re seeing this ugly turn to Team Breitbart to run his campaign, he thinks they can help him but the only thing they’re interested in is building a nationalist movement that survives his loss and is able to fight with establishment Republicans over whatever remains of the GOP’s rotting corpse.

The Southern Poverty Law Center notes that the press is tightly focused on Mr. Trump’s campaign (specifically his conspiracy theories and racist support).

They note that his is not the only campaign shot through with racism and conspiracy theory: They have a list of candidates for lesser office who are also running on similar themes.

Yunno, the “racist” part is still too subjective and to loaded a term. It just leads to an endless circular discussion pulling out all sorts of irrelevant and subjective definitions of the term “racism”.

But “unqualified” is entirely objective, neutral and applicable. Again folks: THIS MAN HAS NO LEGISLATIVE OR ADMINISTRATIVE RECORD TO REFER TO!!!!!

Grifting seems to be a feature of conservatism, not a bug.

Speculative thoughts have been floated that Mr. Trump is trying to establish a “Trump TV” organisation (particularly since Mr. Trump expressed interest in such an idea some time ago). Considering he has taken on both Roger Ailes and Steve Bannon for his campaign organisation, it looks like he is setting up his post-election organisation.

Like Sarah TV of Sarah Palin, it looks more like a grifting operation than a real media venture (plus I imagine Mr. Ailes is under a non-compete agreement with Rupert Murdoch).

For most of my fifty+ years, conservative ventures have seemed to me to be different variants on “how to grift from suckers.”

re: #111 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

As for racism, I think it is entirely fair to bring it in (with the other things you noted). Tie George Wallace around Mr. Trump’s neck. There is no need to sugar coat his racism; if you would rather not use that term I am fine with “fascism.”

I have been in contact for the last couple days via E-mail with the woman who does the YouTube series “The Bible and other Fairy Tales.”

She asked for suggestions from her viewers on future subjects; I suggested religion in politics in the USA (she lives in Australia).

She was fascinated by that idea, and asked me for some more information (have you suffered in your political position as an atheist, are there others in your state who are out and in politics, can you give me a bit of history, &c.)

I filled her in on state senator Ernie Chambers’s lawsuit against God and a few other choice nuggets, such as an interview I did on the “Ask an Atheist” show in Tacoma, Washington, and “Have Your Say” on the BBC. She E-mailed me tonight that she will be working up a post to YouTube on the subject.

In trumps case it is absolutely relevant. I’m reading “Trumped! by John R. O’Donnell.
here’s an excerpt of the donald talking about a black employee.

“I couldn’t believe I was hearing this. But Donald went on, “Besides that, I’ve got to tell you something else. I think that the guy is lazy. And it’s probably not his fault because laziness is a trait in blacks. It really is, I believe that. It’s not anything they can control…. Don’t you agree?” He looked me square in the eye and waited for my reply. “Donald, you really shouldn’t say things like that to me or anybody else,” I said. “That is not the kind of image you want to project. We shouldn’t even be having this conversation, even if it’s the way you feel.” “Yeah, you’re right,” he said. “If anybody ever heard me say that … holy shit … I’d be in a lot of trouble. But I have to tell you, that’s the way I feel.” “Well, I have to tell you, I don’t agree with you. We’ve got people at the Plaza doing good jobs, we’ve got people doing jobs that are not so good. It’s got nothing to do with the color of anybody’s skin.”

trump is absolutely racist with those kinds of views towards minorities.

Hillary and Donald go into a bakery, while on the campaign trail. As soon as they enter the bakery, Donald steals three pastries and puts them in his pocket. He whispers to Hillary, “See how clever I am?” The owner didn’t see anything and I don’t even need to lie.” Then he says “I will definitely win the election.”

Then Hillary says to Donald, “That’s the typical dishonesty you have displayed throughout your entire life, theft, trickery and deceit. I am going to show you an honest way to get the same result.”

Hillary goes to the owner of the bakery and says, “Give me a pastry and I will show you a magic trick.” Intrigued, the owner accepts and gives her a pastry. Hillary swallows it and asks for another one. The owner gives her another one. Then Hillary asks for a third pastry and eats that, too. The owner is starting to wonder where the magic trick is and asks, “What did you do with the pastries?” Hillary replies, “Look in Donald’s pocket.”

Quoting the article above, where another conservative official thinks the Bible trumps secular law:

A Wyoming judge urged the state’s Supreme Court Wednesday to let her remain on the bench despite her publicly stated refusal to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies, citing religious objections.

The state’s judicial ethics commission recommended that Ruth Neely be relieved of her position as a magistrate in the small northwestern Wyoming town of Pinedale, after she told the local newspaper that she would “not be able to do” marriage ceremonies for gay couples.

“When law and religion conflict, choices have to be made,” she told the Pinedale Roundup.

In a letter to the state’s judicial ethics advisory committee, she wrote, “Homosexuality is a named sin in the Bible, as are drunkenness, thievery, lying, and the like. I can no more officiate at a same-sex wedding than I can buy beer for the alcoholic.”

Pesky Constitution, how does it work? Oh yes, Christian Sharia does not trump secular law of the nation. If you are acting as a government official, you uphold the Constitution you swore to defend.

I affirmed I would uphold the Constitution, both as an enlisted Navy seaman, and as a city council member. I do not understand why so many religious conservative politicians and judges seem to think the Bible trumps the Constitution in application of secular law. (But somehow, Muslims are the real threat to constitutional democratic institutions.)

Second murder in my county this year.

In an unusual step, the Morrill County Sherrif’s Office obtained a warrant to hold a witness from Greeley, Colo. to a murder in Bridgeport (pop. 1,100).

She is being held to ensure she shows up at court for her testimony.

We have a veritable murder crime spree in this county of 3,000 people; earlier in the year, a man from Colorado was arrested in Wyoming and extradited to our county for a murder in Angora (population 1).

I interviewed the county prosecutor a few months ago about the Angora murder for an article I wrote for a private organisation to which I belong for its journal; he noted the last murder in the county was in the Thirties.

Yes, but changes to the election process have shortened the timeline. Some valid votes will be cast in less than 40 days.

In trumps case it is absolutely relevant. I’m reading “Trumped! by John R. O’Donnell.
here’s an excerpt of the donald talking about a black employee.

I agree with your assertions. I am talking about campaign strategy and talking points.

Any discussion on racism is going to quickly spin down a rhetorical rat hole and a discussion of PC and “who is the real racist here?”. It turns out to be a waste of time and distracts the discussion from more vital things.

There is, however, no arguing with his lack of qualification or experience in governing, especially as he is running for the office of Chief executive.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Woke up this morning to news that there was a very serious bus crash in Newark between 2 NJ Transit buses. One driver dead, 19 injured, and the area is closed off to traffic - pretty much turning all of downtown Newark into gridlock since the accident occurred at one of the busiest intersections in the city and near the Newark Penn Station transit hub.

And there’s witnesses claiming one of the buses ran a red light, but with all the video cameras in the area, that’ll be checked to see if it’s accurate.

Definitely not the news you want to wake up to.

Spotted this in Midtown last night, and couldn’t help but take a photo:

Consider all the ways that News Corp shreds the news. Lies. Obfuscation. Smears.

And that’s just Roger Ailes fending off sexual harassment suits.

The outfit all too often indulges conspiracy theories, fact-free diatribes without confronting the person with the facts (though to be fair, it’s just as often that the Fox News talking heads are spreading the lies/smears as the guests). This is a “news” outlet that is doing the nation a grave injustice with its nonstop right wing talking points that are unsupported by reality.

It’s into this environment that Trump has taken over the GOP. And witness his first ad, which claims that we aren’t safe, that we’re being overrun with illegal aliens, and that Democrats have rigged the system.

H/t to PZ:

One of the biggest crime waves in America isn’t what you think it is

In dollar terms, what group of Americans steals the most from their fellow citizens each year?

The answer might surprise you: It’s employers, many of whom are committing what’s known as wage theft. It’s not just about underpaying workers. They’re not paying workers what they’re legally owed for the labor they put in.

It takes different forms: not paying workers the federal, state, or local minimum wage; not paying them overtime; or just monkeying around with job titles to avoid regulations.

No one knows exactly how big a problem wage theft is, but in 2012 federal and state agencies recovered $933 million for victims of wage theft. By comparison, all the property taken in all the robberies of all types in 2012, solved or unsolved, amounted to a little under $341 million.

GOP bitching that Obama isn’t visiting Louisiana because of the worst flooding in the US since Sandy.

Of course, Gov. BelEdwards basically said - don’t come because so few roads are open that it would hamper the emergency response. President needs roads for his motorcade, and if you’ve got to close those roads for the motorcade, it means that vital aid can’t get where it’s needed.

Mind you, the GOP controlled Congress is still in recess and isn’t acting on the Zika crisis, which may torpedo the Florida tourism industry, isn’t dealing with a Louisiana flood recovery package, and is busy using the time to run for reelection. So, if you want to direct your ire at government, direct it at the GOP.

They’re the ones who haven’t done anything.

The President issued the disaster declarations on August 14 to get the ball rolling on assisting Louisiana.

More specifically, I think they’re hoping to do what the Tea Party has done: Even a loss forces the Republicans to go further right. That does mean that the white supremacists will have to show up in 2018 to vote in large enough numbers to be meaningful, so we’ll have to see.

More specifically, I think they’re hoping to do what the Tea Party has done: Even a loss forces the Republicans to go further right. That does mean that the white supremacists will have to show up in 2018 to vote in large enough numbers to be meaningful, so we’ll have to see.

This is the tidal force of US politics: the RWNJs will be out in droves for the mid-terms, the moderate and left voters will stay home and the GOP will recoup some seats and offer it is proof that the party has to be MOAR CONSERVERTIVE

Paul Manafort, we hardly knew ye (and where all the money was coming from overseas). You couldn’t even do a proper Friday night news dump announcing your resignation.

Guess the shitshow at Trump HQ was so bad you didn’t want to be a part of it.

The question becomes which network goes and picks him up as a correspondent/analyst for the campaign, and secondarily, whether Manafort becomes the focus of criminal investigation into his lobbying finances.

If your boss continually adds layers of hires over you to do your job, why would you stay. That’s part of the reason Lewandowski left; Manafort was hired. Now, Manafort is getting out because Trump picked up two idiots to “supervise” Manafort’s efforts.

For someone with great business sense, this is the worst thing to do. Adding bureaucracy and adding layers of top management doesn’t improve anything. It just muddles the lines of authority and creates chaos.

Oh wait, Trump doesn’t have great business sense. He lucked into being born with a silver spoon and inherited his business fortune, which he’s basically passing on to his kids.

Alternate theory (which is mine, and which belongs to me…)

The Russian influence story line is about to be confirmed by someone, and the campaign gave him the options of ‘jump or be pushed.’

And as we’ve seen in other situations like this one (Lewandowski), Manafort will still be working for Trump while the campaign will be on the record saying that he isn’t.

A couple other wineries in the Finger Lakes might be doing some blends with it.

Has a similar taste to pinot noir but with some zinfandel and cab jamminess.

White supremacist stabs interracial couple after seeing them kiss at bar, police say

Rowe, 32, walked up to the couple and, without warning, yelled a racial slur and lunged with his knife, police say. The blade grazed the woman and went into the man’s hip, according to a news release from Olympia police.

“The suspect is unknown to the victims and the attack appears to have been unprovoked,” police said in the statement.

“He tells them, ‘Yeah, I stabbed them. I’m a white supremacist,’” Lower said. “He begins talking about Donald Trump rallies and attacking people at the Black Lives Matter protest.”

I was waiting for my order, and the guy next to me, about 20 years older (so, in his 60s), asks in what I think was a Scottish accent “What do you think of the new Doctor?” I told him I liked Capaldi, and he said that this one was a lot closer to the Doctors he knew when he was younger.

Great line from the article:

GOP delayed assistance for more than 6 months before acting. Longer than any prior natural disaster, and they demanded offsets for aid - so that if $10 billion were to go for disaster relief, the Democrats and Administration would have to find $10 billion to cut elsewhere.

These fiscal illiterates ignore the need to spend into natural disasters and economic recoveries, not cutting through austerity (which is why parts of Europe are struggling in part).

Anyone who likes really intelligently written country-pop with really witty and biting lyrics, Lydia Loveless’ fourth album is out today. From the all-music review,

If any artist can get away with calling an album Real, it’s Lydia Loveless — from her earliest work, her songs have always been smart but utterly fearless in their honesty about what’s happening in her head, heart, and soul. 2016’s Real is Loveless’ fourth album, and it’s her most mature and polished bit of studio craft to date. While most of Loveless’ music has walked a line between honky tonk country and raucous rock & roll, Real finds taking a few steps back from her twangy roots and embracing a more pop-oriented sound that still puts the emphasis on guitars but boasts a cool sheen that’s decidedly different than her sound on Boy Crazy or Somewhere Else. Without sounding like she’s compromised herself in the least, Real offers us a Lydia Loveless who could possibly get on the radio with numbers like “Heaven” and “Same to You,” songs that could likely connect with fans of Taylor Swift (the former) or Kelly Clarkson (the latter) if they ever heard them. Real is a less raucous and more measured album from Loveless, but a quick scan of the lyrics reveals she’s no less bold and passionate than she’s ever been, especially as she discusses the clueless creepiness of Midwestern guys, the sometimes untrustworthy call of her own heart, the struggle to find a lover who honestly understands her, and the trickier matter of understanding herself and the world in which she lives. (And old fans shouldn’t fret, tracks like “European” and the title cut are still steeped in country influences.) Loveless is a master lyricist, articulate and expressive without seeming forced or hitting a false note, and her vocals on Real are superb, less the work of a belter but still as passionate and eloquent as you could hope for. Anyone who wasn’t convinced that Lydia Loveless is a major artist by Somewhere Else should make a point of giving Real a listen — at her best, she’s quite simply as good and as brave a singer and songwriter as anyone working today, and Real finds her at the top of her game.

They give her four of five, I’d go an extra 1/2 star myself. Gotta find the money for that show next month…

I don’t really care for the statue of Trump but, short of turning Trump into a woman, it’s the closest he’ll ever come to him being declared not fit to be president for his looks. Trump pretty much said that Clinton and Fiorina weren’t fit to be president for their looks; the statue mocks that, not his candidacy.

I told that gas crew they were up for some fun with my house’s foundation. They ended up keeping the meter indoors and using the existing pipe (cut off and used as a guide for the new plastic line and what they call an indoor kit to connect new plastic to inner black steel pipe.

Sure, those big guys had to get down under my back porch to do some digging, but that beats going through 18 to 20” of limestone twice to do what they thought they could do.

But how cool are those Vermeer hole boring machines!

And speaking of gas…I see Trump is back at the stupid tweets and now Manafort has checked out.

Great example of how Trump operates.

Seems that Trump statue was not very popular with some around here.

But it is a free world and there is context. It does go to what the artist group wanted: the story of the Emperors New Clothes.

There is no better way to do it than to do it. It’s a big world and for all those that don’t like it, there will be equal amounts that do.

And I saw VB mention what happens if someone does a Hillary in that same way. You have to add in his typical take on women that debate or question him. He can’t take strong women so he puts them down.

So any artist(s) that would try making a nude Hillary statue would be seen as just doing it in response and it would get panned as an unoriginal attempt to get back.

It would be a hack and make people sympathetic to Hillary. The Trump statue probably has no one feeling sorry for Trump.

The way the art group did it was perfect. They did it by surprise and got the jump on everyone with a strong profound political statement.

Hillary doesn’t operate or speak like “Trust Me, I Can Do It All Alone.” Only Trump.

And Hillary doesn’t put down people for their gender, looks, race, skin color, personal actions, voice, handicaps or losing son in a war. Trump does.

Trump earned that statue.

And the reason for the Gov asking the President not to come most likely has to do with the amount of security and the number of people required to travel with him to go anywhere. Not really practical in a place where water is still rising in some areas. People are having enough issues getting around from place to place, having the the President there would hinder rescue and evacuation routes. This is not hard to figure out. Unless you’re an asshole.

People are so fucking stupid. They act like the President has a 9-5 office job with no contact with the outside world and there’s no such thing as the internet and other forms of communication.
