Monday Night Acoustic Excellence: Daniel Voth, “Trancendance”

Music • Views: 48,976

Here’s an amazing piece by guitarist Daniel Voth, very reminiscent of a Steve Reich composition with its hypnotically repetitive, subtly evolving patterns.

Title track from Daniel Voth’s new record release ‘Trancendance’.

There was a local news report here in DFW (KDAF affiliate news I think) a week or two ago about early voters and one of the people interviewed was a World War 2 veteran that fought to liberate Normandy and stated he was voting for Trump.

And I went on Twitter and found this:

There is one huge reason why Keith Ellison should NOT be DNC chair:

THIS HAS TO BE A FULL TIME JOB!

Thank you.

Was talking about this with some Dem friends yesterday—as some folks here had brought up the other day about the idea of having co-chairs—one as the face of the DNC (Ellison) and one to do the nitty-gritty work (like Dean or similar)

There is precedent for that in the DNC—back in the 1990s, Don Fowler was National Chairman while Chris Dodd served as “General Chairman.”

I really think that’s a good way to go.

Advice for dealing with a passive aggressive supervisor, anyone?

I love my new job. Love my co-workers and it’s a good, supportive environment. But I’m noticing that my direct supervisor is somewhat passive aggressive. For example, tonight I got an email addressed to me with one other co-worker cc’d on it about some lead generation ads that I’m running. She just happened to copy the one person who came up with the advertising naming conventions in the office and she wants the three of us to meet to discuss the naming conventions “to make sure we’re all on the same page”.

What. The Fuck. If there IS an issue with the ad naming, why not just say it? And why not just ask me to be sure and make the adjustments first thing in the morning? I know from experience that making those changes in Facebook takes less than five minutes.

Advice please. I’ve only been with this company since August. I love it, but that irks me. I don’t like it when someone pulls things like that.

That’s what my liberal parents and brother are telling me. They also want me to see what happens. In a way, I suppose they’re right but it disturbs me the fact that Trump has an actual Nazi/KKK admiree in Bannon. I think with my Dad, he feels he spent so much time hating Bush, he doesn’t want to hate anymore. My brother has a lot more empathy for conservatives since he’s grown up with more and has a lot of conservative friends. Neither of them are really embracing Trump. And I just got off the phone with a friend who is spitting mad that many of the men in her church (it’s a black church) voted for Trump because they don’t believe a woman should ever be president. Sigh.

Ima going to post this again

From Amanda Marcotte, on salon.com: “We cannot, it turns out, square the notion that a woman can be both ambitious and good. Ambition continues to be seen as an unnatural quality in a woman, an indication that she must be a wicked witch casting spells to destroy … any woman who has risen so high must have darkness in her soul. If we cannot find it, we will invent it.”

I think they’re just looking at differently as is their right.

I keep thinking back to Wilson’s EO barring blacks from government jobs. If Trump tried to pass one of those for, say, Muslims, would Republicans have the guts to impeach him over it? Would people like your family or my coworker see that as going to far, and be willing to do something about it?

I’ve been riding an emotional roller-coaster since the election. Finally recognized the pattern: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Still feeling a mixture of all these.

I’m mourning the impending death of our country.

This insight now gives me motive and a path forward. Because I won’t allow this country to die without a fight. I may accept the reality of the situation, but that doesn’t mean I won’t endeavor to change it.

These people want to fuck with my family and friends And everyone else in this country they don’t like for the most moronic, tribal reasons. And they’re going to try. But I and others will be there, standing in the way.

Because you don’t fuck with my family and friends. Or anybody else’s either.

re: #114 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I don’t have optimism. I have a slow-burning rage and a determination that’s not going to quit.

I discovered years ago that, prone as I am to anxiety, I am not prone to depression. Call it optimism, or denial, but I don’t stay depressed.

Today is my birthday, and when I got up my wife said, “For your birthday, why not take a break from news etc?” I thought about it. Then I looked at Facebook, where my wingnut cousin had posted something from some wingnut propaganda page. It was titled, “Should Welfare Cheats Be Arrested?”, and it had a picture.

I imagine you can guess the color of the person being arrested.

That was it. I google searched the image, and OF COURSE it had nothing to do with welfare at all. It was about a brawl at a kindergarten graduation. But the propagandist had used it because, after all, “You KNOW who cheats on welfare!”.

So I stole a snip, and posted it (not giving those fuckers clicks) pointing out what had been done and why.

It actually made me feel better.

I will not go gentle into that good night.

In the summer of 2015 I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to two WWII vets, one black, the other Jewish. Their feelings of being American, of being accepted, were quite different from those of say, my dad. It was especially true for the black vet. That’s not to say the Jewish vet didn’t experience bigotry—he did—but he wasn’t segregated.

It was really sad. The black vet said that (despite Jim Crow) he volunteered for the Navy out of a sense of patriotism, but in his words, “I quickly learned that this wasn’t my country.” It made me so sad to see his face when he said that.

The saddest thing of all for me has to have read about WWII African-American vets who returned home and got attacked or even murdered. I mean to survive a war like that and only ot have that happen. That would sour me. In fact, I hear a lot about how African-Americans should quit bitching and I think a lot are far less vocal than I would be. If I were black, I wouldn’t exactly be the most charitable towards white people. I remember seeing a documentary about the integration of college sports in the South and a lot of the African-Americans had a much more forgiving attitude than I would. So many white people never stopped ot think “What if I were black?”. The thought never crosses their mind.

One reason why WWI has always fascinated me. The different take away so many people got out of that war. Not even in different countries but the same. One man experiences modern 20th century warfare and becomes a dedicated pacifist. Another becomes Hitler. I guess WWI isn’t unique in that but that always is what fascinated me about the war and also how quickly the tools of industrialization of the past century went into massive use. I hope to God the world never sees a war like that ever again. Worse in many ways than WWII.

All hands on deck!

Gonna need everybody to put an end to the political dreck.

Disaffirmation just happened to me. I’m talking with my brother over the phone.
Me: “I was so out of my mind, heartbroken, depressed!”
Him: “About Hillary? She’s a crook, OK? She’ll put Bill in charge!”
Me: <just about dying inside…>

THAT is Disaffirmation.

I haven’t talked to anyone outside of here and a few friends on FB. This is going to happen over and over again. We’re truly on our own.

One other creates a world with languages, histories and epic myths. Another, his friend, becomes known also as a writer but also as an Apologist (in the old sense) for Christianity. The greatest poet created by it, alas, almost survived… 4 November 1918.

I didn’t know it was a dickhead wearing a Trump shirt that questioned this man’s service. Yep, done with even attempting to feel empathy for these people. And they’re the first ones to accuse us of not respecting our veterans. Fuck them.

Read the story, it was a racist dickhead wearing a Trump shirt.

Like some other establishments around the country, Chili’s offered free meals to veterans and active military service members on Veterans Day. Walker wrote on his Facebook page that he was eating at Chili’s with his service dog, Barack, when an elderly customer wearing a Trump shirt came up to him. “He said he was in Germany, and that they did not let Blacks serve over there,” Walker wrote.

Plus they were chosen for the most dangerous jobs.

I think part of the reason why my one brother and I can communicate politically even if he’s a lot more radical than I am is he has a great empathy for people who aren’t like us either. You know Bill, I always wondered about people like that. I remember reading the aftermath of the Titanic officers. Charles Lightoller. This man had one son killed in the first days of WWII and another in the last days. I always think about things like that watching docu-histories about either the Battles of Berlin or Okinawa. I mean all war deaths are tragic but those ones always hit me because I think about young men who experienced so much and then just before the peace arrives, they’re gone. That’s why All Quiet is so beautiful to me. Sad of course but poignant.

This is from a short story I wrote for my class last winter. I’m no Owen or Remarque or Hemingway so don’t judge too hard.
My thoughts finally did come together. My war was finally over. There was no way in hell that I’d be going back in combat. I promised myself that when I made it home to England that I would find Frankie’s widow and son and tell them the true story of their husband and father’s fate. They won’t hear that he died valiantly in the service of his majesty King George, no they’ll hear that Frankie died with his brothers. And I vowed that whatever I did that I would fight like hell so future generations of men would never have to experience what Kidney, Frankie, I, and the men of K Company did ever again. But now I would fall asleep and just appreciate the fact that I was alive. In the end, I was a statistic, one of millions, no longer even Lieutenant Hastings but causality one of millions in a long, bitter war.

Maybe he’ll put a balcony on the White House he can rant from like Mussolini.

I was thinking somewhere where he can get double the symbology.

If he positions himself just right he could use the Washington Monument as a backdrop and The Reflecting Pool in foreground as visual effects. One as a huge phallic symbol giving the portrayal of him being a huge dick, and the reflecting pool so he can see himself as did Narcissus.

(Sorry…couldn’t help myself!)

I found an outlet in my own neighborhood. I just walk out and see people. Introduce myself in the shops I’ve never shopped in before. I’m finding the resilience around me to be inspiring. We don’t feel beat. We do feel injured and hurt. Adrenaline rises and resolve appears. Head comes up, feet step forward. Women, blacks, Muslims, ordinary denizens of this town.

Excellent!

“…Refuse to accept what’s going on as the new normal. Not now, not ever. In the months and years to come, decisions will be made that may strike you as perfectly sound, appointments announced that are inspired, and policies enacted you may even like. Friends and pundits will reach out to you and, invoking nuance, urge you to admit that there’s really nothing to fear, that things are more complex, that nothing is ever black or white. It’s a perfectly sound argument, of course, but it’s also dead wrong: This isn’t about policy or appointments or even about outcomes. This isn’t a political contest—it’s a moral crisis. When an inexperienced, thin-skinned demagogue rides into office by explaining away immensely complex problems while arguing that our national glory demands we strip millions of their dignity or their rights, our only duty is to resist by whatever means permitted us by law. “

This is the fundamental problem with the media internalizing the View From Nowhere: they are literally unable to pass any kind of judgment on their own behalf, but rather have to find “critics” to say it for them. So all value statements can be dismissed as just the opinion of someone with ulterior motives.

The irony being, of course, that that’s all FOX does.

There is a 3 month period to which I need to prove myself and I just wished it didn’t coincide with the damn election

One of the things I realized about me and my smart friends when I was in high school was that because we’re really good at handling complex things, we can tend to make simple things complex. I have often attempted to fight that, generally by realizing that the solution I am coming up with seems way more complicated than the problem. I think that applies here. Trump is a simple person: He has a large ego that needs to be stroked, and he’s a racist and has surrounded himself with similar people.

Well, it’s my saturday night and after a few beers it’s time to actually go to bed when it’s dark out. Later Lizards!

What would really be nice is if those were in PA and FL.

I was laughing so hard at those tweets and how the idiots took it seriously.

I wished I would have took Skrillex’s advice. Don’t like his music or fanbase, but met the guy a couple of years ago at Coachella and was a nice humble guy so I’ll always remember that. Here’s what he said:

Spot on.

Even Diplo, a guy I normally can’t stand, has a sobering assessment about the next 4 years:

Here’s the unprocessed ballots report as of 5pm today. It now includes all counties:

We have more uncounted ballots in San Diego than the entire population of the state of Wyoming.

re: #315 Belafon

Remember the tweet from the other day of the biker looking guy standing next to the woman in the hijab? The conversation ultimately ended up that he would stand up for her if something happened. As much as I’m angry at these types of people for voting for Trump, these are the people we have a chance at if things go in the direction we’re all worrying that they could.

I wouldn’t count on it. Sure, he talked nice to the lady, but how will he be with a stranger he doesn’t get to talk to. He was wearing that “Proud to be a deplorable” shirt for a reason.

He’s the chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party.

Jaime is my state chair and a really good guy. He works really hard, with little money, and is always a positive force.

re: #101 MsJ

What what?

I’m embarrassed. I’m livid. I’m sad. I’m emotional as fuck. I hate what my country has become and fearful for what has yet to happen.

This whole Trump Vanity Project is a nightmare of epic proportions.

I can’t stomach the First Whore of the US.

Trump will never be my president. Fuck him and the assholes who support him.

That’s my what these days.

“President Pepe”, is it too soon to introduce that term, along with the phrase, “That’s mighty White of you”?
