It’s a long thread, but it’s got a lot of power.

Scares the crap out of me, to be honest, and I’m not even likely to be a target. Hard to know what kind of stuff to expect, stuck way out in the boondocks in Texas’ most conservative county… :/

Bernie Sanders on Charlie Rose rn talking about his new book.
His rhetoric is very passive aggressive on Clinton and Obama. I don’t think this is helping.

Dimebag’s brother Vinnie Paul deserves a lot of credit for making Pantera a canonical metal band. The musical delivery is an all out assault with those two. Vinnie Paul hasn’t done much since he witnessed his brother’s murder on stage/

Since I live in China, I follow several bloggers based here. Speaking of China is a blog by Jocelyn Eikenburg, an American who married a Chinese man and lives in China almost full time. This is a guest post from her blog by an anonymous Westerner who got an abortion in China, because she and her husband were not in the right financial condition to have children yet. It’s a good read.

I went onto Facebook to check up on folks and came across three posts from three different people urging everyone to stop hating on Trump, and give him a chance, and respect the office of the president, etc., etc. Same people did not vote for Obama and kept silent when Republicans ragged on him for eight straight years.

CNBC says Democrats are certain the reason Trump won was because of the economy. All the polls taken of Trump supporters say it is because of too much immigration (of Mexicans) which means Trump will probably be a two term President.

How can Dems be so “educated” but be so stupid?

Looks like Trump’s idolized foreign policy initiative - BREXIT - is causing problems:

TEXT-Britain’s leaked Brexit memo

The following is a copy of a leaked memo on Brexit prepared for the Cabinet Office. It was printed by The Times newspaper.

May’s office said it did not recognise the claims made in the memo.

[…]

Brexit update as of 7th November 2016

This note summarises the current state of play on Brexit issues in Whitehall in the critical inter-related domains of politics, government and industry.

The Prime Minister’s over-riding objective has been to keep her party from repeating its history of splitting 4 times in the past 200 years over global trade - each time being out of power for 15-30 years. The public stance of Government is orientated primarily to its own supporters, with industry in particular barely being on the radarscreen - yet.

[…]

Individual Departments have been busily developing their projects to implement Brexit, resulting in well over 500 projects, which are beyond the capacity and capability of Government to execute quickly. One Department estimates that it needs a 40% increase in staff to cope with its Brexit projects. […]

[…] Expectations of increased headcount are in the 10-30,000 range. […]

Industry has 2 unpleasant realisations - first, that the Government’s priority remains its political survival, not the economy - second, that there will be no clear economic-Brexit strategy any time soon because it is being developed on a case-by-case basis as specific decisions are forced on Government.

In summary - the government is overwhelmed, and is looking out for its own political survival.

Sound familiar?

Of interest to everyone, but please especially point this out and make sure our resident BernieBro reads:

newsweek.com

Eichenwald (the same guy who did the awesome trump’s-conflicts-of-interest research that the rest of the media ignored) got a look at the GOP’s bernie oppo file, what would have been unleashed had he been the nominee:

Here are a few tastes of what was in store for Sanders, straight out of the Republican playbook: He thinks rape is A-OK. In 1972, when he was 31, Sanders wrote a fictitious essay in which he described a woman enjoying being raped by three men. Yes, there is an explanation for it—a long, complicated one, just like the one that would make clear why the Clinton emails story was nonsense. And we all know how well that worked out.

Then there’s the fact that Sanders was on unemployment until his mid-30s, and that he stole electricity from a neighbor after failing to pay his bills, and that he co-sponsored a bill to ship Vermont’s nuclear waste to a poor Hispanic community in Texas, where it could be dumped. You can just see the words “environmental racist” on Republican billboards. And if you can’t, I already did. They were in the Republican opposition research book as a proposal on how to frame the nuclear waste issue.

Also on the list: Sanders violated campaign finance laws, criticized Clinton for supporting the 1994 crime bill that he voted for, and he voted against the Amber Alert system. His pitch for universal health care would have been used against him too, since it was tried in his home state of Vermont and collapsed due to excessive costs. Worst of all, the Republicans also had video of Sanders at a 1985 rally thrown by the leftist Sandinista government in Nicaragua where half a million people chanted, “Here, there, everywhere/the Yankee will die,” while President Daniel Ortega condemned “state terrorism” by America. Sanders said, on camera, supporting the Sandinistas was “patriotic.”

I’ve wondering about voter turnout being down and have a theory, hard to prove without quality polling. Two factors that would have been a clearly decisive edge for Trump:

1. Misogyny Effect: how many men in every ethnic group did not vote for Clinton because she was female? How many females voted misogyny?

2. Minority Effect: how many PoC and maybe latinx energized to vote for a black man in last election just stayed home?

These factors aren’t Trump accomplishments or victories but they benefited Trump. Both factors together could be a few million votes, more than enough to make a diff in the EV.

Also doing a little more digging after taking a dip in the ‘Dems voted slavery’ hot tub. Studying the GOP and Dem parties around the time of the Civil War, it’s utterly clear that the GOP was the liberal progressive party of the time. They formed in 1854 primarily on an anti-slavery platform.

Civil War truthers typically seem to be conservative GOP: beat them over the head with it next time they well up from the sewer and try to drive the ‘Civil War not about slavery’ narrative.

You may have heard that conservative parents are really upset that Supergirl’s adoptive sister, Alex Danvers, has come out on the show. If they ban their kids from watching the latest episode, they’re doing their kids a disservice, IMO. The script handled the situation sensitively and in a way that kids can identify with.

Alex has been having feelings toward a lesbian police detective, Sanders, and she is confused, having never considered herself lesbian before. Sanders tells her, if she sure, to come out to her family, which means Kara (Supergirl). Kara’s OK with it, but Alex tells her about her confusion and about how she lost her best friend in middle school because Alex didn’t really understand why she liked sleeping with her friend so much (as in sleeping, not having sex, K?). Now that’s she told Kara, Alex meets up with Sanders, and passionately kisses her, only to have Sanders tell her, “Let’s just be friends.” Alex is crushed, and as the episode ends, is crying in Kara’s arms, saying she feels so humiliated.

Chyler Leigh, who plays Alex Danvers, did a really good job in her role. If you have a chance to watch it, and can get past the silly power-sucking alien plotline, you should.

re: #93 BigPapa

I’ve wondering about voter turnout being down and have a theory, hard to prove without quality polling. Two factors that would have been a clearly decisive edge for Trump:

1. Misogyny Effect: how many men in every ethnic group did not vote for Clinton because she was female? How many females voted misogyny?

2. Minority Effect: how many PoC and maybe latinx energized to vote for a black man in last election just stayed home?

These factors aren’t Trump accomplishments or victories but they benefited Trump. Both factors together could be a few million votes, more than enough to make a diff in the EV.

Part of the problem in proving this theory is that I’d bet there are plenty hiding their misogyny behind other things - the hate of her in particular for example or abortion. Still these are effects which are important, especially in combination with the increasingly successful voter suppression efforts.

As I tweeted to Sanders in response to that inane tweet, I know exactly where he comes from.

He’s a Jewish kid from Brooklyn. He went to Madison HS (where Schumer, Sanders, and RBG went at different time periods). Brooklyn doesn’t look a lot like it did back then. It’s now predominantly multi-ethnic, with far fewer white people than when he was growing up. In fact, Brooklyn looks a lot more like what the nation will look like demographically as a whole in a few decades than Vermont. In fact, Vermont is among the whitest states in the nation. Homogeneous and lily-white.

Sanders is pushing the same crap he did during the primaries, where his prime concern is white folks, even though it’s persons of color who suffer the most under a Trump presidency. His prime concern isn’t even white women, who’d suffer greatly under a Trump presidency given he’s surrounded himself with people who want to make abortion illegal and criminalize the act of seeking out abortion (or giving one). He’s most concerned with the people who are least affected by a Trump presidency, all while claiming that they’re the ones in greatest economic distress.

Sanders is playing the con - just a different angle from Trump.

Neither is correct on the macro level, even though some pockets of the country are suffering economically, but neither Trump nor Sanders truly has an answer for that - because waving your hand and saying jobs will magically return isn’t a plan. It’s a recipe for disaster and inaction.

They’re smart in that they underestimated the stupidity of people to vote against their interest. They were smart in picking slogans that are easy to remember - picking ones from the ash heap of history that have special significance to their key groups (the bigot brigade and deplorables - white nationalists and supremacists). Make America Great Again sounds just fine, until you realize that it is either already great, or they’re making a completely different and racist argument. They want a return to a period when white folks in Rust Belt states had jobs - and those people ignore why those jobs went away in the first place.

And Trump had the benefit of people like Bernie who had similar messages undermining Clinton throughout the primaries and who continues to this very moment making racist/classist arguments that aren’t supported by the facts.

In fact - it’s Trump’s stubborn refusal to accept facts that was the smartest thing he did - he ignored reality and invented his own. He got enough people to buy into his view in the right places for him to win.

And more than a few were conned. They’ll have the great letdown, and Trump will walk away richer and more powerful than before.

re: #150 Patricia Kayden

I’m referring to helping people living in states where voter ID laws are in effect or where Republicans have shut down most of the election offices in communities of color. There must be a way that our side can push back outside of getting help from courts (which will become even more rightwing under Trump).

How can we help people get the documents they need to overcome the voter ID laws? How can we get people to the few election offices that are open in red states? Just talking about voter suppression every four years is useless.

It will be different at the state level. Alabama actually has a much more manageable ID law than places like Wisconsin, Florida is tighter than us. It’s possible to work fixes into the short voter-education opportunity at registration, but that means training registration volunteers better.

SPLC has a large web tool that workers can use to call up state-unique FAQs on-the-spot, it is part of their On-Campus project, which will be stepping back for awhile. (“Stepping back” might be the next problem to fix. I’m talking up a “freeze-dried’ Registration/GOTV concept among our people. We can’t spend the first half of a campaign season trying to re-organize.)

Here are the ones he listed:

Planned Parenthood

Center for Reproductive Rights

Natural Resources Defense Council

International Refugee Assistance Program

NAACP Legal Defense Fund

The Trevor Project

Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund

Pro Publica

Additional Organizations:

Southern Poverty Law Center

American Civil Liberties Union

Anti-Defamation League

Guttmacher Institute

What would be the best organizations to support for bullying prevention and for combating voter disenfranchisement?

Thanks!

A few others:
ACLU (or their state affiliates)
SPLC - tracks hate groups across US
ADL - fights anti-Semitism in US and around world
Guttmacher Institute - they’re the ones who track reproductive health, birth control/abortion restrictions, effects, both in the US and internationally.

I can tolerate Priebus, because he’s a generic Republican who will say what the bosses want him to say. Bannon is evil, and should not even be a frequent visitor to the White House.

No wonder why Moore talks about running Oprah or Tom Hanks. I guess Trump proves they could win but I want the best possible mind for the job. expecially if the tax treaties don’t hold.

I understand there is going to be a bit of dark money —black ops etc. If they aren’t going to pay taxes on it to some government, they there should be some form of tribute to social agencies who have to clean up the mess the dark money (drug money) created.

Twitter has long had a feature called “mute” which enables you to mute accounts you don’t want to see Tweets from. Now we’re expanding mute to where people need it the most: in notifications. We’re enabling you to mute keywords, phrases, and even entire conversations you don’t want to see notifications about, rolling out to everyone in the coming days. This is a feature we’ve heard many of you ask for, and we’re going to keep listening to make it better and more comprehensive over time.

Our hateful conduct policy prohibits specific conduct that targets people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease. Today we’re giving you a more direct way to report this type of conduct for yourself, or for others, whenever you see it happening. This will improve our ability to process these reports, which helps reduce the burden on the person experiencing the abuse, and helps to strengthen a culture of collective support on Twitter.

And finally, on enforcement, we’ve retrained all of our support teams on our policies, including special sessions on cultural and historical contextualization of hateful conduct, and implemented an ongoing refresher program. We’ve also improved our internal tools and systems in order to deal more effectively with this conduct when it’s reported to us. Our goal is a faster and more transparent process.

not good enough when threats reported are not considered a violation of TOS.

Twitter’s libertarian POV enabled and enables those who freely target people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease. By not stopping what would have been a manageable problem long ago, this level of online hatred is now sinking their company, making it almost entirely unsalable.

This does nothing to take the burden of proof off of us, or of those who are targeted. Leslie Jones is the only reason why @Jack has done anything. Period.

Too many dice rolls came up for Trump. We might be underestimating the professionalism behind that Unfortunate Series of Events.

What we might have underestimated is the power of the Tweet, how that fits into the internet and how having a TV personality helps get you on TV.

I am wondering if Hillary was a little too hidden as far as forcing herself onto TV like The Donald did. She also didn’t try to go for the huge rally and really firing up the crowd until maybe it was too late.

It is hard to deny that Trump managed to spend less and get more. There will be a lot of thinking about that for future elections. Also to be considered is how does a “normal” candidate take on a flamethrower without getting burned?

And this is my shocked face.

The same people who felt that they should get out and protest didn’t think enough to actually go and vote - where their protest (vote) would actually carry real weight.

If you can go and wait in line for days for a new Star Wars movie or a new iPhone, you can wait to go place your vote at the ballot box. Far too many of these people decided to skip the vote.

In Oregon, it may not make much of a difference since the state went for Clinton, but in states where the margins were much closer, this could have meant a world of difference.

Also, while this was in Portland, Oregon, one has to wonder how many protesters in other parts of the country didn’t go and vote - leaving their voices unheard in the one place where it truly counts - the ballot box.

It’s too late to remind people that the time to protest and act against bigots is before they win elections - and registering that opposition in the form of a vote. By not voting, these people ceded the ground to a bigot.

Thanks for that.

No wonder why Moore talks about running Oprah or Tom Hanks. I guess Trump proves they could win but I want the best possible mind for the job. Someone who actually unlike me stay in a seminar on advanced economics without falling asleep. Someone who can juggle hundreds of egos without going nuts. I want a president who understands people like me but also understands the immense responsibilities of this office, an office once held by George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

I guess we are at the point where we are accepting a “President in the Window” and having a strong staff to do the actual political work. It started with Ronnie, but he acted as a politician and even had some experience. Now it appears some are just fine with the acting job, period.

Anything to win? Any thought given to what the winner does next?

But there is so much unknown with all that kind of thinking. If we go that way, then the entire cabinet needs to be identified before the vote. Can you imagine the nitpicking that would happen if everyone fought over 15 or so people on each ticket?

“Voter suppression was an impact as well.”

Yep. And I wish Dems could come up with an effective strategy to deal with voter suppression. Perhaps, we could get some volunteers to actually work with those who want to vote who are impacted by voter ID laws for example. There must be something we can do beyond just talking about voter suppression as if it were an insurmountable problem. The courts aren’t going to help us fight that issue.

There actually are groups that work with people who are impacted by voter ID laws, and they do a pretty good job getting people registered. What we need to do is get people elected as Secretaries of State, because that’s where the real suppression takes place—with purging voter rolls, limiting registration and voting locations, cutting early voting times, providing fewer voting machines in urban precincts, etc.

Look up Ken Blackwell, who was a master at it in Ohio (and who now heads Trump’s domestic transition team efforts.)

From guy that said Obama is a racist and “has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture”

Even Glenn Beck Says Stephen Bannon Is ‘Terrifying’

On today’s episode of his radio show, he talked extensively and passionately about the dangers of Donald Trump’s chief advisor, Steve Bannon. He didn’t hold back on his fears, many of which we all share.

“He’s a nightmare and he’s the chief adviser to the president of the United States now.”

He doesn’t talk about Trump being a racist, rather he suggests that the media focus on Bannon who he says “has a clear tie to white nationalists.” He even talks about Bannon’s white nationalist, racist, sexist, anti-semtic online newsrag, Breitbart, going to far as saying that Bannon is on record saying that he created it is a “platform” for the alt-right.

Beck ended with “He is a terrifying man. A terrifying man.”

Glenn Beck’s years of unhinged rhetoric and stirring the pot helped create Trump and Bannon. He doesn’t get points for “coming around” now.

My grandmother, daughter of a coal miner really doesn’t get why anyone would want to go back to the mines. I’ve told you guys. Her father died fairly young because of the mines. He was very healthy other than his lungs. The mines literally killed this man. This man who raised four children when his first wife died. This man who came over to this country not speaking any English. I’m happy the mines have declined. My grandfather saw what they did to his father and father in law and became a construction worker. My mom’s childhood was far from affluent but my grandfather was a healthy man and my brothers and I, his grandchildren were able to know him in a way that so many of his father and father in law’s grandchildren did not know them. We don’t even have a photo of my grandfather’s father.

We need ot help communties effected by mines closing and the decline of industry but let’s build new sources of energy. We have the ability to do that. Phyllis Chesler, writing for Arutz Sheva (which also appears to be on board the Trump train—Jared! Ivanka!), is hating on the new Muslim-Jewish Advisory Council because people like Ibn Warraq & Ayaan HIrsi Ali aren’t included:

And so, the American Jewish Committee has chosen the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) to launch a “Muslim-Jewish Advisory Council.” Many distinguished (liberal) Jewish names have signed on but the Muslim signatories are not exactly their counterparts.

Only (liberal) Jews “reach out” to understand the Other. Only (liberal) Jews “reach out” to appease the Other.[…]

To the best of my knowledge, these Muslim signatories have not disavowed Jihad or proudly and loudly supported Israel as other Muslim-Americans have done. These liberal Jews have not signed up our most prominent religious Muslim-American reformers such as Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, Ali Alyami or Asra Nomani. Further, I do not see the names of Muslim feminists or Muslim dissidents, who are apostates or secularists, such as Ibn Warraq or Ayaan HIrsi Ali. […]

For those of you not familiar with her, Chesler has also written numerous artilces for Breitbart (see archive.is). She claims to be a feminist (i.e. she’s a concern troll). re: #457 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

exactly the same family story here…granddad came over from Slovakia, hurt his back working in the mines, took to drinking for the pain, got a hold of some denatured hooch during Prohibition and went half-blind from it.

Yeah my one was from Slovakia too. Lots of Slovak miners as you know. I don’t know much about him and his interests but I guarantee he didn’t the job because he loved mining, he knew it was one of the few jobs available to a man of his background and situation during that and did it. His descendants live much better lives than he did. I don’t think he would be happy about the miners being used as cynical pawns in Trump and McConnell’s game.

re: #466 Backwoods_Sleuth

You have to realize that to the true believer that is all that is needed. Trump threatened to sue. Never did. Because discovery. Same here. But to the indoctrinated, it’s just as good as a done deal. “Yeah. They said they were suing. That’ll shut them up.” Just like Trumps taxes. You’ll never see them. But he said he was going to release them. Good enough for the algae crowd. Perceptions are self inflicted. You choose. Just use SMOTI for an example. He still has ardent supporters. Because.

He turned down a cabinet post because he said he lacks the experience

An incredibly idiotic thing for him to say or suggest, but unfortunately ranks it only at #846,251 on the list of idiotic things done and said since last Tuesday by Trump and his surrogates and media.

You know the thing is, he may actually be qualified for a cabinet post so I sort of respect that but then again he spent the past year telling us he was qualified to be President too so I don’t know what his deal is.But as I said, I’m glad he’s not going to impact HHS or Education with his nonsense. Don’t know if I want him going back to surgery though either honestly.

True, Rudy has spiders eating his brain and it’s not looking like that’s stopping him from the State Dep’t which I don’t see how he’s qualified for at all. AG I would get. I would hate it but I would see the logic behind that. I guess that means Jefferson Beauregard Sessions the Third for that. I was telling my Dad about him btw DD and even his full name, he got a kick of it. He frigging hates Rudy and wasn’t happy when I told him about Rudy being the SOS frontrunner. Wasn’t happy about Bolton either.

If loyalty is the only thing that matters, this is going to be a clusterfuck of epic proportions. If there are any sane Republicans that care about this country even a little bit more than power, they can line up with Democrats and stop a bunch of the crap coming down, at least the “ending the Republic” crap.

You might want to bookmark this list by VB from a couple of years ago as it indicates which direction various Jewish news sites lean. Also Algemeiner is kind of a wingnutty site. Last but not least, in my notes I have this as being from lawhawk (but don’t have a link to the original comment):

I’d also include Ma’ariv (which is in Hebrew, but Google gives a marginal translation into English), and put it center-left.

I’d honestly be happy to see him as SECDEF. The services have learned how to survive worse, and his replacement from here would fall back down the food-chain.

I assume mine was a Democrat since Grandma and Grandpa both told me that their parents loved FDR but also John Lewis. Dewey/Warren was a sane ticket though. I love Truman but that’s the last Republican ticket I wouldn’t have to do a second thought with. Eisenhower/Nixon comes close but the Nixon would be hard and my other Grandma loved Adlai too.
