I’ve wondering about voter turnout being down and have a theory, hard to prove without quality polling. Two factors that would have been a clearly decisive edge for Trump:
1. Misogyny Effect: how many men in every ethnic group did not vote for Clinton because she was female? How many females voted misogyny?
2. Minority Effect: how many PoC and maybe latinx energized to vote for a black man in last election just stayed home?
These factors aren’t Trump accomplishments or victories but they benefited Trump. Both factors together could be a few million votes, more than enough to make a diff in the EV.

You may have heard that conservative parents are really upset that Supergirl’s adoptive sister, Alex Danvers, has come out on the show. If they ban their kids from watching the latest episode, they’re doing their kids a disservice, IMO. The script handled the situation sensitively and in a way that kids can identify with.
Alex has been having feelings toward a lesbian police detective, Sanders, and she is confused, having never considered herself lesbian before. Sanders tells her, if she sure, to come out to her family, which means Kara (Supergirl). Kara’s OK with it, but Alex tells her about her confusion and about how she lost her best friend in middle school because Alex didn’t really understand why she liked sleeping with her friend so much (as in sleeping, not having sex, K?). Now that’s she told Kara, Alex meets up with Sanders, and passionately kisses her, only to have Sanders tell her, “Let’s just be friends.” Alex is crushed, and as the episode ends, is crying in Kara’s arms, saying she feels so humiliated.
Chyler Leigh, who plays Alex Danvers, did a really good job in her role. If you have a chance to watch it, and can get past the silly power-sucking alien plotline, you should.

I’ve wondering about voter turnout being down and have a theory, hard to prove without quality polling. Two factors that would have been a clearly decisive edge for Trump:
1. Misogyny Effect: how many men in every ethnic group did not vote for Clinton because she was female? How many females voted misogyny?
2. Minority Effect: how many PoC and maybe latinx energized to vote for a black man in last election just stayed home?
These factors aren’t Trump accomplishments or victories but they benefited Trump. Both factors together could be a few million votes, more than enough to make a diff in the EV.
Part of the problem in proving this theory is that I’d bet there are plenty hiding their misogyny behind other things - the hate of her in particular for example or abortion. Still these are effects which are important, especially in combination with the increasingly successful voter suppression efforts.

He’s a Jewish kid from Brooklyn. He went to Madison HS (where Schumer, Sanders, and RBG went at different time periods). Brooklyn doesn’t look a lot like it did back then. It’s now predominantly multi-ethnic, with far fewer white people than when he was growing up. In fact, Brooklyn looks a lot more like what the nation will look like demographically as a whole in a few decades than Vermont. In fact, Vermont is among the whitest states in the nation. Homogeneous and lily-white.
Sanders is pushing the same crap he did during the primaries, where his prime concern is white folks, even though it’s persons of color who suffer the most under a Trump presidency. I said it before but I was sort of annoyed that Bernie responded to Cruz’s New York values attack. They’re smart in that they underestimated the stupidity of people to vote against their interest. They were smart in picking slogans that are easy to remember - picking ones from the ash heap of history that have special significance to their key groups (the bigot brigade and deplorables - white nationalists and supremacists). Make America Great Again sounds just fine, until you realize that it is either already great, or they’re making a completely different and racist argument. They want a return to a period when white folks in Rust Belt states had jobs - and those people ignore why those jobs went away in the first place.
And Trump had the benefit of people like Bernie who had similar messages undermining Clinton throughout the primaries and who continues to this very moment making racist/classist arguments that aren’t supported by the facts.
In fact - it’s Trump’s stubborn refusal to accept facts that was the smartest thing he did - he ignored reality and invented his own. He got enough people to buy into his view in the right places for him to win.
And more than a few were conned. They’ll have the great letdown, and Trump will walk away richer and more powerful than before.

Vote-by-mail works where we can have it, and a strong GOTV focus on ‘chasing’ the mail ballots. We ran out of people to do that in FL.

He says he’s against war, but he has voted time and again for foreign conflicts and loves him some defense spending (when it goes to Vermont). Says he has no connections to big banks or special interests, but keeps dodging on releasing his tax returns. And so forth.

I think many of them really think that the hypothetical polls were set in stone. I can get that with the young ones who supported him but the older Sanders people I know have no excuse. It will be different at the state level. Alabama actually has a much more manageable ID law than places like Wisconsin, Florida is tighter than us. It’s possible to work fixes into the short voter-education opportunity at registration, but that means training registration volunteers better.
SPLC has a large web tool that workers can use to call up state-unique FAQs on-the-spot, it is part of their On-Campus project, which will be stepping back for awhile. (“Stepping back” might be the next problem to fix. I’m talking up a “freeze-dried’ Registration/GOTV concept among our people. We can’t spend the first half of a campaign season trying to re-organize.)

The same people who felt that they should get out and protest didn’t think enough to actually go and vote - where their protest (vote) would actually carry real weight.
If you can go and wait in line for days for a new Star Wars movie or a new iPhone, you can wait to go place your vote at the ballot box. Far too many of these people decided to skip the vote.
In Oregon, it may not make much of a difference since the state went for Clinton, but in states where the margins were much closer, this could have meant a world of difference.
Also, while this was in Portland, Oregon, one has to wonder how many protesters in other parts of the country didn’t go and vote - leaving their voices unheard in the one place where it truly counts - the ballot box.
It’s too late to remind people that the time to protest and act against bigots is before they win elections - and registering that opposition in the form of a vote. By not voting, these people ceded the ground to a bigot.

Perhaps, we could get some volunteers to actually work with those who want to vote who are impacted by voter ID laws for example. There must be something we can do beyond just talking about voter suppression as if it were an insurmountable problem. The courts aren’t going to help us fight that issue.
There actually are groups that work with people who are impacted by voter ID laws, and they do a pretty good job getting people registered. What we need to do is get people elected as Secretaries of State, because that’s where the real suppression takes place—with purging voter rolls, limiting registration and voting locations, cutting early voting times, providing fewer voting machines in urban precincts, etc.
Look up Ken Blackwell, who was a master at it in Ohio (and who now heads Trump’s domestic transition team efforts.)

My grandmother, daughter of a coal miner really doesn’t get why anyone would want to go back to the mines. I’ve told you guys. Her father died fairly young because of the mines. He was very healthy other than his lungs. The mines literally killed this man. This man who raised four children when his first wife died. This man who came over to this country not speaking any English. I’m happy the mines have declined. My grandfather saw what they did to his father and father in law and became a construction worker. My mom’s childhood was far from affluent but my grandfather was a healthy man and my brothers and I, his grandchildren were able to know him in a way that so many of his father and father in law’s grandchildren did not know them. We don’t even have a photo of my grandfather’s father.

Yeah my one was from Slovakia too. Lots of Slovak miners as you know. I assume mine was a Democrat since Grandma and Grandpa both told me that their parents loved FDR but also John Lewis. Dewey/Warren was a sane ticket though. I love Truman but that’s the last Republican ticket I wouldn’t have to do a second thought with. Eisenhower/Nixon comes close but the Nixon would be hard and my other Grandma loved Adlai too.
