I haven’t blown an amp in a long time - most of the guys I’ve worked with use tube amps, and of course, you know what blows first in a tube amp. This was actually our in-ear monitor system, and I’m guessing that a faulty power point cooked the power supply to the central distribution unit.

Unfortunately, I’m not as intimately familiar with the equipment as I probably should be. I can tell you that if you’re looking to do voiceovers, you’d want to find a nice cardioid mic, to minimize pickup outside the direction the mic is pointing.

Ah, the kind of stuff that happens as equipment gets used and moved constantly. Guess you could call that kind of damage road kill?

Was involved with some early work toward using switching power supplies for large audio amps, just for giggles and as a technical challenge. Switchers seem to be the standard now for most amps I notice for sound reinforcement, and I’m just wondering how well they hold up. Easier to haul than the old linear supply stuff I’m sure.

I gave up on getting any dialog at the shop when we are working the metals and I’m recording. Torch or furnace or just ventilation it’s a mess. That’s a welcome suggestion on mic type. Of course trying to get a nice studio sound but on the fly and for a dime.

Yeah, I know the tone. I don’t know the exact settings that would reproduce that kind of soft-AM studio tone, but I’m sure you could reproduce it with a little experimentation. Radio stations might use a hypercardioid, so you might check around, just to see.

That new to me Olympus E-P3 is a fun camera. Updated the firmware tonight so it recognises my 32 gb card. Nice feel to it as it has a decent amount of heft from a proper metal construction. It reminds me of my once upon a time Leica IIIf though none of my glass is in Summitar class.

For the record - a hypercardioid has a slight sensitivity behind the microphone, whereas a cardioid is more or less completely dead behind the microphone. I suspect that radio stations use microphones with some degree of sensitivity in both directions (in front of and behind the microphone), for interview purposes, so you might even look into a figure-8 pattern microphone. The point is to find a mic pattern that matches your studio and the frequency resonance in the room. A lot of the deficiencies can be resolved in EQ mixing, but by no means all.

It’s funny how memory works sometimes. When I read 80’s Al, I flashed back to hooking up a set of repaired Western Electric high powered mono tube amps recovered from an old theater to a set of Magnepans and throwing Al on the turntable.

Funny how the test took that album and a few more before I was sure all was okay. ;-)

Wow. I would estimate that I’ve owned somewhere around 500 700 LPs/CDs over the years. A lot of them I got simply because of one song. I populated much of my Itunes library from the Itunes store, and a lot of those songs obviously came from the CDs I didn’t have.I still think that would only represent about 1k albums, so I can hardly imagine that kind of collection.

Yah, still makes me sad. A lot of great music that will never make it to digital media and so will never be replaced. Over half the collection was classical with a lot of special recordings and pressings. Some amazing performances from incredible artists that most people will never hear. And now lost. Sigh.

Depends how low budget is low budget. My mic of choice for male VO is the Shure SM7. It runs 300 bucks or so. Add in a USB mic processor from Presonus or Focusrite and you’re closing in on 500.

Heil makes some great lower-end options. Or haunt eBay for classic EV RE15 or RE16 for a hundred bucks or so. I don’t like the EV RE20 and its clones. You see them in radio all the time, but they’re really made for kick drums and sound too boomy on most voices.

Unless you have a real studio to work in, look for a large-diaphragm dynamic instead of a condenser. Dynamics are a little less sensitive to room noise. You can get a large-diaphragm condenser from CHYNA!! for as little as 30 bucks, and you’ll find it to be surprisingly good, but any condenser, whether a cheap one or a kilobuck Neumann, will hear EVERYTHING in the room. Computer fan, dog barking, fridge motor, you name it.

I really liked the first few seasons of House, then the plots got to be too predictable. I credit the writers for introducing House’s opiate addiction and Thirteen’s health problems as sub-plots, but there wasn’t enough there to keep me interested. I’ve burned out on NCIS for much the same reason — love the characters, but not the ongoing Muslim terror menace plots.

He’s stupid, then. Taiwan press would obviously publish it, and then Trump even tweeted about it. Aside from that, the PRC monitors communications, and Tsai and Trump made it even easier by speaking (I assume) on a non-secure line. The Chinese are well educated and very wily diplomats and negotiators. Trump will try to con them, but he’ll end up being the loser, and he won’t even realize it.

I’ve read up on his Atlantic City ventures. He violated just about every item of advice business experts offer newbies. AC already had four casinos in operations, IIRC. They were fronted by the big names in Las Vegas casino gambling, and they were already finding it hard to operate profitably in a small town with limited transport access. So, in comes Trump (a casino newbie), he leases one casino and proceeds to build another, thereby competing against himself, as well as already established casinos operated by the pros.

He persuades investors he has below-prime interest rates on the mega-loans he needs to build the new one and reno the old one — that was a lie. In fact, he couldn’t get decent financing. He says he’s going to fly in gamblers from NYC on his own airline, but instead brings them in by bus. Only high rollers and big names get ‘coptered in, because he doesn’t want to spend the money on lowly retirees gambling their pensions away. Pretty soon, the casinos can’t make payroll and Trump can’t service his debt load or the lease payments on the first casino. Total disaster for the employees and the investors, but Trump manages to skate away with minimal damage.

Then, there’s the Plaza Hotel fiasco. He bought the property mostly to satisfy his ego, and paid way too much for it IMO. Then he spent even more money to renovate it. The Plaza has name recognition, to be sure, but New York is chock-a-block with famous hotels. A wiser developer may have spent top dollar to buy the Plaza, but waited on major renovations until the property started turning a profit. Again, he was using other people’s money, so what did he care? Eventually, as part of his bankruptcy deal, he renegotiated lower payments to the NYC banks which lent him the money, and gave up his majority share in the company.

He’s a financial klutz.

I wanted to come in and thank a couple people here for suggestions they made on how to get over the recall petition I was facing. It appears to have gone down in defeat, as it is not on Monday’s village board agenda. (Such things are limited by time, and it failed to gather the required number of signatures.)

Since I could get no direction from the state or county party how to proceed, I followed the advice of those here (I cannot find your names now, so thank you as you know who you are) to tell people why it would be in their best interest not to sign such a thing.

I went around town and simply talked to everyone on the expense of a special election that the village would have to pay for. Another recall attempt that happened only a year before I moved here is still raw on a lot of people’s nerves (that petition ended in an election that failed to oust the board member, who is now our chairwoman pro tem).

Only one person asked if there was another method to oust me aside from the petition, to which I responded truthfully. a) I can be voted out in 2018, b) If my seat was declared vacant by the village board for failure to show for three meetings in a row without just cause c) If I was convicted of a crime that caused (b) or d) If I moved out of the village, became a citizen of another country, or quit.

Another person here at LGF asked what a village trustee is. Essentially it is the same as a city council member, but villages are specially-defined entities in the Nebraska Statutes.

A village is an incorporated entity of not less than one hundred and not more than eight hundred people. A Village Board of Trustees must have a fixed membership of five trustees (whereas cities of the second and first classes may have variable numbers of councilmembers elected in wards or at-large, all village trustees are elected at-large). Trustees organise themselves after an election, whereas a city council and mayor have specific duties. Trustees do not have to be paid, city councils do.

We call our chairwoman the mayor colloquially, as we would have to be a city over eight hundred organised as a city of the second class to actually have a mayor. (Mayors are always elected at-large in cities.)

In my county there are two incorporated cities of the second class, and my incorporated village.

The link above and succeeding ordinances under section 17-201 and following describe the duties and powers of villages (and by extension, the duties and powers of village trustees), pretty boring unless you like state statues to cure insomnia.

The village board’s upcoming Monday meeting is the first after the election, so the organisation of the board is the first item of business on the agenda. (The Chairwoman Pro Tem will likely become Chairwoman. I am the most senior on the board by continuous time, but not by total time, so we’ll see what happens to me. Currently my duties include Sewer Superintendent - a job that’s always looking down, and Flag Committee Chair). Organising a special election is not on the agenda.

The usual channels would suggest the State Department and the White House would have known about the call before it happened. They did not, it seems. The usual channels would not include the Heritage Foundation, either.

Someone is trying to save Trump’s face here. Beijing will already know these reports are bogus, but it will still blame Tsai for the transgression. Trump may avoid criticism from Beijing for his part.

Edited to add: “difficult to dispute the machines were tampered with” is a very charged way of interpreting the evidence; someone replacing a gear is “tampering” but not altering the operation of the device.

He’s definitely the type of Catholic I grew up admiring. My great uncle was a RCC priest in a predominantly African American parish in Louisiana for many years. He was a Holy Ghost Father, an order that works a lot with African Americans and immigrant congregations. Flynn is an imbecile. As I said, he’s Edwin Walker but instead of seeing the Reds everywhere, he sees Radical Islam. Difference is Nixon never made Walker his national security adviser.

7:35 a.m.

Fire officials say at least nine people died in a blaze that broke out during a party in a warehouse late Friday night in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Oakland Fire Chief Teresa Deloche-Reed says at least another 13 people are unaccounted for as of Saturday morning.

Deloche-Reed says the fire department still must do a thorough search of the building.

The fire started about 11:30 p.m. Friday. It tore through the building during an event featuring musician Golden Donna’s 100% Silk West Coast tour, the East Bay Times reports.

Authorities told KTVU-TV about 50 people were in the building, which houses a group of artists and their studios.

The 10-minute telephone call with Taiwan’s leadership was the first by a U.S. president-elect or president since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979, acknowledging Taiwan as part of “one China.”

Yeah I saw some people upset that Liz Warren suggested Scott Brown for Vets Affairs last night. I obviously have no love for Brown especially for being an actual bigot in regards to Warren’s turned out mistaken belief that she had distant Native American ancestry but he’d probably be better than Palin. I think what is with the PRC and ROC is that the PRC wants to be seen as the legitimate government of China which is why the U.S. publicly recognizing One China matters more than the arms sales. But yeah my brother’s kind of annoying me with his concern trolling on the issue. As I said, he’s just a kid (15) but he basically said I was being hypocritical for being aware of offending the PRC’s sensibilities while at the same time being very wary of Russia and Trump’s pro Russia overtures. It’s not out of love for the PRC, it’s keeping them happy and less likely to do a massive military build up.

I really hope the Democrats in the Senate don’t let him coast through. I have to admit I really rolled my eyes hearing Trump refer to him as Mad Dog to his adoring crowds when I was on my home from work yesterday on NPR. As I said last night, I really hope that Mattis should he be confirmed is more a George Marshall than George Patton. George Marshall not George Patton IMO is the best American general of the 20th century. He doesn’t have an epic movie or the idolized version of him hammered on by Trump but the man was our best. I believe Truman even called him the finest American of the age.

Thanks. Great way of looking at it. In a sense by acknowledging the PRC, we are in fact keeping Taiwan more safe than we did with the previous policy. It does help that old hardliners like Mao on the PRC side and Chiang on the ROC side have long since passed on. As I said, I think the PRC really wants to be seen as the legitimate government of China and that’s what they want most from our government and as much as I don’t like the PRC, it’s smart international relations to do that. Just as it’s smart to be wary of Putin given his contempt for NATO and his neighbors borders.

This searching of electronic devices has been going on for a long time. The border search exception to the Fourth Amendment pretty much negates the requirement for probable cause allows the searches. I remember reading about it a good while back.

It naturally got a lot more focus after 9/11, but AFAIK the exception had always existed. It’s certainly unsettling that someone like the Orange Vulgarian could really use that in bad, bad ways.

The DOJ published this United States Attorneys’ Bulletin (PDF) on “Border Issues” in November 2014. I only read the first couple of pages, but it looks kinda interesting (assuming it doesn’t get into too much lawyer-speak).

Thanks. Great way of looking at it. In a sense by acknowledging the PRC, we are in fact keeping Taiwan more safe than we did with the previous policy. It does help that old hardliners like Mao on the PRC side and Chiang on the ROC side have long since passed on. As I said, I think the PRC really wants to be seen as the legitimate government of China and that’s what they want most from our government and as much as I don’t like the PRC, it’s smart international relations to do that. Just as it’s smart to be wary of Putin given his contempt for NATO and his neighbors borders.

Not to mention that the two cases aren’t remotely parallel. Russia recently grabbed the Crimea by force, and is threatening Ukraine — the PRC isn’t about to take over Taiwan (at least as long as certain persons can hold off on their bull-in-a-china-shop diplomacy). This searching of electronic devices has been going on for a long time. The border search exception to the Fourth Amendment pretty much negates the requirement for probable cause allows the searches. I remember reading about it a good while back.

It naturally got a lot more focus after 9/11, but AFAIK the exception had always existed. It’s certainly unsettling that someone like the Orange Vulgarian could really use that in bad, bad ways.

The DOJ published this United States Attorneys’ Bulletin (PDF) on “Border Issues” in November 2014. I only read the first couple of pages, but it looks kinda interesting (assuming it doesn’t get into too much lawyer-speak).

A reminder about this friend of my father’s though to show you that he’s a naive guy. He thought Trump won the town hall debate because of the soft question about what the candidate admired most about the other and he thought Clinton’s answer about admiring Trump’s kids was a cop out and Trump gave a great answer about how he admires her for being relentless. I pretty much told him that his guy contradicted himself on that since Trump repeatedly trashed Clinton’s stamina. And the fact that it was a soft question. He’s not a bad person but he is your Trump voter, very low information.

This is about the only thing I agree with obnoxious hate preacher Steven Anderson on. I oppose these warrantless searches near the border. (The difference between him and me, however, is that I answered the question regarding my citizenship through gritted teeth. He refused to answer, refused to cooperate and was eventually Tased for his trouble.)

This questioning and searching is done in relatively remote places, along highways, and not in cities, where people would be more likely to get riled up about warrantless searches. I’m pretty sure if the wealthy people of Tucson (well within the 100 mile limit) or south Chandler (here in the Phx area) had to go through a checkpoint to get to and from work every day, they’d be up in arms.
