Swedish guitarist Salomon Jakobsson has a uniquely propulsive style and impressive finger-picking skills. This is a show-stopper from his solo album “In the Valley of Notes.”

Here is “Desert Mouse” from my album “In the Valley of Notes”, inspired by the two adopted desert mice Blacksmith and Humphrey (RIP).

I have a question. I saw on Facebook a side-by-side image purporting to be the 2009 and 2017 inaugurations, showing a much lower attendance for Drumpf. I’m assuming that the image showed the crowds still forming, instead of the full attendance? Or was it really fairly sparse?

Estimates that I’ve seen, supposedly from the NPS, are 250,000. Ridership on public transportation was supposedly below that of a normal workday.

Attendance was definitely much lower than most inaugurations. The Washington Post has a good comparison article: washingtonpost.com

Bill Maher might actually be worth watching tonight:

Actor Jane Fonda is the guest at the start of the Season 15 premiere, while commentator Keith Olbermann joins a panel discussion with economic equality advocate Heather McGhee, presidential historian Jon Meacham and former labor secretary Thomas Perez.

Obviously you can only tell so much by photos but it looked like Metro the way it does on a weekday night. Definitely not as crowded as it gets when people are going to and from work or when there’s a lot of people attending something like a mass political event or a sports game.

Bill Maher might actually be worth watching tonight:

No, he isn’t. Here’s why:

There was a piece recently in the NYT about him, calling back to his last troubles with a conservative President.

The article is what you’d expect, talking about getting booted from ABC for not being “patriotic” enough, etc. Near the end of the article, Maher takes the reporter to the Beverly Hills Hotel, which was under a boycott from a clutch of celebs. One of the owners is a rich Saudi official who is big on Sharia.

When asked about this, Maher is essentially “Fuck these liberals celebs for not being Islamaphobic enough, I’m going to shit on their boycott by eating here.”

The man has a massive bigoted streak 10 miles wide, and he either doesn’t see it or, more likely, doesn’t care. Fucking asshole.

Yeah, but he’s a white guy beloved by wingnuts everywhere, because they always see themselves as Churchill during the Battle of Britain - bravely facing an overwhelming enemy, unbowed and unbroken.

Mind you, Churchill fucking HATED Nazis, and didn’t trust Russia, either.

What I hate is the Churchill myth. But your’e right, he did hate the Nazis and didn’t trust the Rusians.

From a friend today:

Orange Russian

Ingredients
Ice cubes
1/4 cup Kahlúa
2 tablespoons vodka
1 tablespoon Cointreau
2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
1 navel orange

Method
Fill a rocks glass halfway with ice cubes. Add the Kahlúa, vodka, and Cointreau and gently stir to blend.
Pour the cream over so that it floats on top of the Kahlúa mixture. Using a fine grater, grate some orange zest on top. Serve immediately.

National Park Service Banned From Tweeting After Anti-Trump Retweets

NPS retweeted this:

From article:

Here’s the email sent to National Park employees earlier today:

All:

We have received direction from the Department through [the Washington Support Office] that directs all [Department of Interior] bureaus to immediately cease use of government Twitter accounts until further notice.

PWR parks that use Twitter as part of their crisis communications plans need to alter their contingency plans to accommodate this requirement. Please ensure all scheduled posts are deleted and automated cross-platform social media connections to your twitter accounts are severed. The expectation is that there will be absolutely no posts to Twitter.

In summary, this Twitter stand down means we will cease use of Twitter immediately. However, there is no need to suspend or delete government accounts until directed.

This does not affect use of other approved social media platforms. We expect further guidance to come next week and we will share accordingly.

Thanks for your help!

I still like Hillary but I do think she faced a tough road. That said, she was the best candidate the Dems could have nominated. Anyone who believes Bernie would have won is wrong. The way Bernie was performing with critical parts of the Democratic base wasn’t a good sign. Plus, I think Bernie is naive AF in many way. I’ll admit. Wasn’t fond of her first because I still had bad memories of 2008 and Klys and thank you Klys for this pointed out to me how it wasn’t fair of me to call her a mere extension of her husband. I also learned a lot more about her and her record and I was just genuinely impressed. I do think that the hate for her is definitely unwarranted but as you say it was there. I don’t know either who would have made a good candidate. This stuff all runs in cycles anyhow. Honestly, I had this worry that if Clinton had won that we would be prime for a defeat in 2020 because of “fatigue” and the unlikelyhood of four consecutive two termers in the WH. I liked Sanders more at first too but I’ve actually gone from fan to really not being fond of the man. It’s too bad. I’ve posted a lot of material about this, and (perhaps contrary to the prevailing view here), I do think the Dems made a huge mistake in underestimating the appeal of economic populism (yes, I know HRC tried to put forth progressive policies, but they weren’t articulated in a way that reached the people she needed to reach - namely, low-info voters who could never be arsed to visit the policy section of a website and only respond to feel-good bumper-sticker slogans)

Now…would Bernie have won? There’s no way I can say with 100% certainty how he would’ve fared under sustained GOP attack (though every criticism you could have leveled against him, e.g. too cozy with Russia, applied 100-fold to trump). I also can’t say if the POC vote would’ve come through for him in the end. I do feel confident, however, in saying that his populist rhetoric would’ve appealed to a good chunk of the low-info, angry, “fuck the establishment” types who broke for trump, esp. in the so-called “Brexit” states.

So maybe Elizabeth Warren would’ve been the ideal nominee last year… :/

I’ve been thinking about that lately as well. If Hillary had won this time around, and even if we had taken back the Senate to go with the WH, I’ve no doubt we’d have taken a terrible beating in 2018 and Hillary would’ve lost her re-election bid in 2020 due to that fatigue you mentioned (and with more interference from the same parties who brought her down this time).

I think the struggle is framing a populist message with a message that is truly inclusive towards all. I’m not anti-populist but I think populist campaigns left and right sometimes over simplify matters. I felt Trump definitely did that and Bernie did too.

$3600 for a piece clothing. I’ve never spent that much on a full ski set (skis, bindings, boots).

Because that’s different somehow. I mean I wouldn’t have punched Spencer but I can’t feel too bad for the Nazi asshole.

Would anyone here feel bad if Robert Spencer or Pamela Geller or Glenn Beck got punched by either a survivor or the parents of the victims of Anders Breivik?

Nat at all especially Beck since he fucking likened those kids to the Hitler Youth.

Violence should never be the first resort but you should always be prepared to defend yourself. I don’t know the circumstances that brought on Spencer being punched but I highly doubt he was just minding his business and he got punched.

If I paid retail for my ski set (skis, bindings, boots) I’ve been using, it would be very close, $3400. But us lifelong skiers have ways to not pay retail for our shit. My rig was just under two grand all said and done.

What would be great karma is that a lot of the same Republicans elected to the House by hysteria about ACA in 2010 would be unseated in 2018 by people angry at the Republicans trying to get rid of it. Let the Republican reps get a taste of their own medicine on that one. Let their representatives deal with Town Halls of unfriendly questioners.

2. Order lays out Trump’s fastest path to hurt ACA: Urge health secretary (who has much discretion) to weaken law.

3. The order also doesn’t do a lot of things. It doesn’t take away coverage. It doesn’t kill programs. Obamacare’s not going away overnight.

4. These are instructions to an HHS that might not want to kill Obamacare — your president is telling you, start finding ways to weaken it.

5. The most immediate weakening in this executive order is around ACA mandate — and instructing HHS to exempt as many people as possible.

6. HHS already has loads of flexibility. But “might” exempt people is very different from specific order to exempt as many as possible.

7. As @StefFeldman (former Obama admin staffer) makes clear, having that clear roadmap from POTUS *does matter.*

@StefFeldman
@onceuponA @ddiamond (some oppose repealing ACA) that they need to start using admin pwrs to weaken ACA (and they can do a lot)

8. There are long-term effects for the individual insurance market — not necessarily good ones. We’ll have more in our story posting soon.

9. Meanwhile: Trump promised his supporters an executive order to hurt Obamacare on day 1. And yes, it’s heavily symbolic. But he delivered.

Apparently this was a holiday for Federal workers in and around DC. So, since A LOT of the people in that area are Federal employees, yeah, a lot of them weren’t missing work.

They usually get a “holiday” for big events like this so that they can attend and add to the crowds.

No, they get a holiday so the much up the public transportation. Please don’t add disinformation to mix about how and why Federal workers get the time off they get. The only employees who got this day off worked in DC and the counties right next to it; Montgomery, Prince George’s, Northern VA
