Mike Pence Breaks Senate Tie to Confirm Creationist Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary

Heart-breaking
Politics • Views: 34,780

The United States took another big step toward becoming a theocratic autocracy today, as Mike Pence broke the tie in the Senate and rammed through the nomination of creationist Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary, a religious fanatic openly hostile to public education.

This is a heart-breaking development for anyone who cares about science and education. There seems to be no way to stop Donald Trump from wrecking this country in ways we won’t be able to reverse for many years.

It is disappointing on so many levels. I got a great public education, and so have my kids. I will have a kid still in public school in four years. All of this is why I’ll keep doing what I can to minimize the damage.

My go-to Republican coworker said that even his wife called Cornyn to tell him not to vote for her (which I did as well). He mentioned that after Cornyn posted about supporting her, the responses on the site were of the “you must not” variety.

I weep for the children…

and to think I grew up with a (public) school system that taught us about the scientific method, evolution, spent an entire semester on the history of South America, taught us the historical method and how to read and evaluate different genres of literature and writing…

all lost in time, like tears in the rain…

Nope. They held their ground; Murkowski and Collins went against the party out of a sense of well-being for the country at large because it was effectively in the bag with a 50-50 deadlock.

Pence broke the tie, the first time that’s ever fucking happened for a cabinet appointment.

All those kids who might have become great scientists. Ah well. In the Idiocracy, who needs scientists?

One of the smartest people I’ve ever known is a public school science teacher. Great teacher, has taken her students on field trips all over the world, including a trip sponsored by the Discovery Channel.

She’s teaching one more year and then taking early retirement. Way early retirement. She has no interest in being a pawn in the dismantling of public education.

In less than a month, damage that will last decades.

I guess some will see this as another example of the revulsion everyone is going to feel from a Trump administration that will lead to the glorious change to America becoming a land under a new era of liberal progressive nirvana when in 2018 and 2020 all Americans see the light and vote in an all Democratic government.

But hey…Clinton was just another Republican…so we needed to go through this process.

Betsy Devos is the conservative Christian world’s version of royalty, uniting the billionaire Prince clan, of car parts and Blackwater fame, with the MLM complex whose most prominent member is, of course, the Amway organization. It was a dynastic marriage. Now, with this appointment, Trump and the traitorous Republican Party have given the dynasty the keys to the kingdom.

Polls coming out these days indicate Trump supporters are counting on Democrats to “keep Trump in check” against some of the outrageous stuff he spouts. They still support Trump BTW. Cognitive dissonance of the highest order.

Anyway, I don’t see how it is possible to save the Dept of Education now. It has been under fire from Republicans for years now and they now have the keys to the castle. I don’t think there is enough Democratic resistance left in the country to thwart the upcoming dismantling of a mostly secular education system in favor of a specifically Evangelical Christian, white-centric worldview being taught as fact across the country.

This is going to happen despite this particular worldview only being recognized by about 2%-3% of the world’s population. This equates to a generation of students who are about to be “left behind” when it comes to competing on the world stage.

I think this is less blaming Dems for this happening and more ‘Dems have no reason to further enable the seemingly inevitable’. And Dems have had a bad history of trying to do so for the sake of ‘bipartisanship’, like the 2010 midterms with god knows how many dumb Dems running screaming from Obama to try and build red state cred that got them buried instead.

Appears that the state senator may have been pushing back on the sheriff’s asset forfeiture aggressiveness at least by the context of the discussion at the WH.

It’s an issue that has widespread support for reform, mostly because law enforcement can and do abuse it so easily.

They stop you for some ticky tack driving issue. Under the rules, you could lose your car, or contents of your car, even if you never get charged, let alone convicted for a crime.

CNN’s Chris Cuomo once again hammered a member of Congress on air for trying to dodge difficult questions. The interview was so contentious that co-host Alisyn Camerota quipped after the interview that “he’ll never be back.”

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) refused to tell whether the media fails to report acts of terrorism. Monday, President Donald Trump alleged “It’s gotten to a point where it’s not even being reported. And in many cases, the very, very dishonest press doesn’t want to report it. They have their reasons, and you understand that.” The conspiracy theory first appeared on the site InfoWars, which Trump is known to support.

Cuomo demanded to know if Jordan agreed with Trump’s assessment.

“I’ll let you and the White House have that debate,” Jordan said.

“Oh, no, no, no, no,” Cuomo broke in. “That’s not why you were sent to Washington. This is about truth and taking care of the people, your constituency. This matters. What do you think about it?”

This makes me feel better. Not.

At the root of things is the fact that the pope gave the boot to Raymond Cardinal Burke, a theological reactionary and a guy who was born 500 years too late to be the high cleric of his dreams. This touched off a major squabble with the Knights of Malta. They’re serious power brokers within HMC even though they dress like Albanian ushers and despite the fact that just talking about them makes me start hearing “Hail, Hail Freedonia” in my mind. Burke was their chaplain. I do not know if a sword and a falcon goes with that office.
…..
There’s a genuine rebellion brewing in HMC, holy obedience be damned, you should pardon the expression. And today, The New York Times adds a bizarre—but completely predictable—bit of information to the story of that rebellion.

In one of the cardinal’s antechambers, amid religious statues and book-lined walls, Cardinal Burke and Mr. Bannon — who is now President Trump’s anti-establishment eminence — bonded over their shared worldview. They saw Islam as threatening to overrun a prostrate West weakened by the erosion of traditional Christian values, and viewed themselves as unjustly ostracized by out-of-touch political elites. “When you recognize someone who has sacrificed in order to remain true to his principles and who is fighting the same kind of battles in the cultural arena, in a different section of the battlefield, I’m not surprised there is a meeting of hearts,” said Benjamin Harnwell, a confidant of Cardinal Burke who arranged the 2014 meeting.

Lovely.

Just as Mr. Bannon has connected with far-right parties threatening to topple governments throughout Western Europe, he has also made common cause with elements in the Roman Catholic Church who oppose the direction Francis is taking them. Many share Mr. Bannon’s suspicion of Pope Francis as a dangerously misguided, and probably socialist, pontiff… For many of the pope’s ideological opponents in and around the Vatican, who are fearful of a pontiff they consider outwardly avuncular but internally a ruthless wielder of absolute political power, this angry moment in history is an opportunity to derail what they see as a disastrous papal agenda. And in Mr. Trump, and more directly in Mr. Bannon, some self-described “Rad Trads” — or radical traditionalists — see an alternate leader who will stand up for traditional Christian values and against Muslim interlopers.

Dunno, but might find out. The crap that hit New Orleans this morning will be here in 20 minutes. Strangely, no NOAA radio alerts, no sirens.

What’s going to happen to Russia when their mercenaries realize two things?

1) We are poor. We have weapons and are willing to use them.

2) Our employers are rich. They do not have weapons and are not willing to use them.

The logic then become inescapable. It’s happened before.

Non-citizens coming into the country, especially now, probably feel very vulnerable and powerless. And those CBP Agents who have been itching for years to throw their weight around feel emboldened, and they know they’ll suffer little or no consequence, largely because of that feeling of vulnerability.

But surely, there are limits to the questions they are allowed to ask, and the things they have the authority to see.

When it’s noon in Chicago, it’s about 1967 in New Mexico. Everything gets here late. After 9-11-01, there was a tourism crash across the US. It hit NM in about 2003. I think people make plans way in advance to come here (a big trip for many) and don’t want to cancel.

On the other hand, when Wendell Zurkowitz says, ‘Things are going to have to get a lot worse’, we’re already there.

I feel vulnerable and powerless too, as does everyone who is paying even a tiny bit of attention to what’s going on now since Bannon seized power.

I actually think that the “corporate interests” are best served by a great education system. One that provides lots of workers that can do jobs and stuff for them or at least make enough money to buy their products.

222
BlueGrl21  Feb 7, 2017 • 2:07:03pm

We weren’t going to win on DeVos, but man, we fought the good fight. First time in history a VP has had to break a tie on a cabinet nominee. Her credibility is shot. And the Department of Education has little real power anyway. Republicans want to abolish the whole thing.

Education policy is extremely dispersed and it’s at the state and local level. Make a difference there and don’t focus on DeVos.

Married to a teacher who has yet to teach anything but factual information about political science and economics. Who skips parts of any of the textbooks he’s given that are bullshit. People don’t become science teachers to not teach real science. They teach what they want in their classrooms.

I can remember a biology teacher I had who had it on her “required curriculum” to go over creationism as well as evolution in class. She spent about 2 mins on creationism and said, “There, I’ve checked that off my list. Evolution is where we’re focusing moving forward, because it’s science.”

I don’t know many teachers that aren’t a bit spunky about how and what they teach.

We have bigger fish to fry than a 10th-rate cabinet member who everyone in the Trump administration will ignore anyway. Though Trump will approve of her wardrobe choices as “womanly,” so there’s that.

Public education became a partisan political issue in the US the instant the decision in Brown v Board of Education came down.

By now, the Republican position on public education has evolved to the point where they want to abolish it completely everywhere they can’t resegregate public schools and teach creationism as science.

(It’s ironic that the spell checker wants to change ‘resegregate’ to ‘desegregate’)

If Trump gets two or more RWNJs on the Supreme Court, the Roe, Lawrence, Obergefell and Griswold decisions will be first up for being overturned. After that it will be interesting to see if the RWNJs dare to go after Brown.

RWNJ ‘jurisprudence’ is definitely consistent with ‘separate but equal’ being constitutional. After all, one of the easiest jobs in the world is to rationalize present-day prejudice by finding (or pretending to find, if necessary) the same biases in earlier thinking, which is mostly what all that ‘originalist interpretation’ bullshit amounts to.

Hello Lizards,
Found this site through Stephanie Miller - then Bob Cesca - then Bob and Chez Show - then Charles (when he was a quest host talking about Chuck C Johnson). I’ve been lurking for about a year and loving the site and thought I’d join. Nice to find some wonderful liberals that I mostly agree with (and who hate Jill Stein as much as I do).

I believe I’ve found my ideological home (and Charles - in 2004 - when I was 20 years old - I finally turned away from being a know-nothing republican - happens when you grow up in Kansas - but am now in wonderful Colorado and educated).

I don’t do social media - so be gentle if I look like a fool for the first month or so.

The discussion between Trump and Sheriff Sevier was regarding a Texas state senator who was in opposition to the implementation of civil forfeiture laws by the Rockwall Sheriff’s deparment - they have one of the highest seizure rates in the nation of money and property- all without a conviction, and in many cases without any arrest. There has been a bipartisan effort to reform these laws to require a criminal conviction before property seizure can happen. In response to these efforts, Sevier has been regularly threatening anyone who oppose those who get in the way of his personal gravy train.

Yeah.

SO, Conway tries to claim it’s true SOMEWHERE, but she doesn’t know where, while others point out that the rate-of-change 2015-2016 is higher than it’s been in 50 years.

The thing is, neither one is what he said. What he said was bullshit. Total fabrication. Absolutely not true. But I don’t expect a meeting of Trump-loving Sheriffs to all start coughing “Bullshit!”

Pineapple on pizza is gross (the wife loves it).
Have 3 dogs (2 golden’s and a rescue golden doodle that is chewing everything) and the best cat around.

And I being you New Belgian Fat Tire and Crab Tree Brewery Blonde Ale

Fat Tire is one of my new favorites. Downside - I’ll burn through a six pack without noticing.

So, when you see a tornado please remember the basic rules — stay upstairs filming out of the window with your cellphone. Previous advice to take shelter is now revoked — which would you rather be — alive or posting a great video?
