Time and time again since the ACA first passed, people think they’re being so clever when they comment “Congress should be forced to use the same system they vote in!”
This is so stupid. You can get some pretty nice plans on the Exchanges, if you have the money, which they do, since they’re subsidized. And even if they weren’t, most of them are pretty well off. The ACA doesn’t force the well-to-do into shitty insurance plans, and the AHCA wouldn’t either.
No, the people most affected will always be the ones who just gained insurance, the ones for whom, even if they had insurance, the copay for something like a mammogram might be too much.

The GOP hasn’t found itself in the position of actually governing for over a decade. They lost the House in ‘06 and immediately stopped being about governing and became totally about opposition to everything the DNC puts forth. They never paid any political price for their opposition, actually profited from it instead, and now are left dealing with the reality that governing means doing things that are unpopular.

Here’s the thing though, they are despairing over bullshit and creating the conditions that are killing them despite having some level of privilege.
Stop hating people, learn some shit, stop being scared and see that the world isn’t bad for you in so many ways and that you have a lot of power to help change the parts that are. Then you consequently make it better for those who are actually suffering from systemic bias, historical bigotry and daily micro aggressions.
The thing that makes the whole election more understandable? The areas that bought into Trump’s fear-and hatemongering over The Other are the most homogeneous. Areas where people interact with something other than straight white Christians are much harder to scare with bullshit they know from their own experience isn’t true.

The thesis is simple enough to state: some kind of compromise between red America and blue America is necessary if we aren’t to end up with a cold civil war or being perpetually on the verge of a cold civil war.
That’s true enough, but I honestly don’t see how this is possible. Republicans have unilaterally radicalized themselves to an extreme degree, and the political reality is that the Democrats must respond in kind (at least in part, although the Democrats have nothing like Fox News or Hate Radio and shouldn’t do that shit) or just get rolled over.
As ever, one side or the other can ensure war, but peace requires both sides to cooperate.

As someone who has family in West Virginia, you have no idea how frustrating it is, especially seeing my parents’ friends (all Filipino immigrants themselves) falling into that same mindset themselves. It’s a small miracle my parents have remained the decent people that they are.
As a note too…it’s funny that all the places they tend to decry as out of touch liberal havens blind to the real threat tend to be…the most threatened places, and yet remain, you know, not hair-on-fire, pants-wetting panicked the supposed existential threat of monolithic Muslim and/or Mexican massacre mobs.

I keep scratching my head trying to figure out what weird definition of “compromise” he’s trying to use. In my dictionary compromise is both sides giving up something to come to consensus. IMO such things as civil rights and women’s bodily autonomy are just not available for compromise. At that he does the MBF thing and goes “aha! see? I told you”. Then he uses as an example of his idea of compromise as working around those who will not play. That is not compromise, that is strategy.
What I do agree with is more effective messaging/communication on the Democratic side. Something we’ve discussed a lot here. But then we get into the weeds on the media as was so clearly demonstrated during the election. So. I dunno.

He answered that question near the bottom of the essay:
I used the word compromise on purpose.
I used it deliberately and with malice aforethought.
I used it knowing what would happen, how you’d react.
I used it because I knew, I knew, that it would provoke a visceral reaction. I used it because it’s as much a trigger for many of you as it is for those you despise. You hear compromise and instantly your teeth are bared and your fists are clenched. No. No compromise. It’s not up to us to compromise, it’s up to them! No. No compromise. No peace. Die!
But, you see, in those paragraphs describing civil war and reeducation camps up above, the partisan you isn’t identified and as such those statements could apply equally well to the other side - and do.
I said I wasn’t asking you to compromise with hate, but with fear.
The issue is figuring out how to compromise with fear. How to assuage it.
There are a certain number of voters who will be hateful always and forever. Mr. Wright did not ask (and explicitly stated in the essay) that compromise with hate is unnecessary.

What I want is reality based democratic governance. Republicans do not want that. They want an oligarchy propped up by lies and bullshit.
No compromise between these two positions is possible. As indicated upthread, a large scale cult deprogramming effort is pretty much what is needed to get wingnuts back in contact with reality.
My question I guess remains is how do you convince a bloc that sees other people having equal rights as they do as that group having “special rights.” I’m familiar with conservative rhetoric on LGBT rights. They really think gay people want “special rights” when they just want the same rights that come in a marriage as straight people and they don’t want to be treated like sexual predators. And that unfortunately seems a bridge too far for many conservative leaning voters. It’s like this on a lot of issues for conservatives. They don’t think about an issue’s impact until it hits close home to them, i.e. that lady in Indiana whose husband is being deported.

Okay, what should we compromise on? And as already been said, compromise is a two way street. I’m willing to work to cut waste in government but too many conservative office holders read office holders think the solution is just to cut a program i.e. what we’re seeing with the Trump budget and Meals on Wheels. It’s difficult to find common ground with people who seldom if ever show an ability to want to listen to other opinions.

Just as Mr. Wright wrote in his essay, he predicted these sort of responses. He did not ask to compromise with hatred. There will always be hateful people. He asked to compromise with fear. Understand it. Show the fearful why they do not have to be afraid.
It will take time. Lots of time. The other choice is “screw it” and shut yourself in.
On the national level, less than half the voters turned out. Start with them.
re: #120 Blind Frog Belly White
“I hate to be quite so cold and unfeeling as this, but it seems like when you expose white people to the same conditions that black and brown people have survived for years, they don’t do as well. So, maybe white privilege isn’t because white people deserve it. It’s because we’re just not as strong.”
I shared the article on Facebook with the following comment added: When one decides to turn one’s decision-making ability over to others, those persons can then treat him/her any way they want. I paraphrased what LBJ said over 5 years ago:”If a politician can convince a white person that s/he’s better than n*****s, he can get them to vote against their interests.”
Alternet had a great article a few years ago about how many Americans have permitted politicians to make decisions for them because they are either un/under-educated, rely on others to explain complex issues to them, and seem to think that the politicians they support will always act in the best interests when many times, they don’t.

I agree. This is why compromise is unnecessary. We can draw from the larger pool of morons rather than try to negotiate with terrorists.
re: #227 Decatur Deb
We’re humans. We compromise when both sides are sick of the bloodletting.
We compromise when both sides have been burnt to the ground. When one side is still standing, we call it surrender.
re: #230 Amory Blaine
That’s always been my thinking. Compromising with the cult and the party is a waste of my time and energy.
re: #200 Anymouse
He answered that question near the bottom of the essay:
The issue is figuring out how to compromise with fear. How to assuage it.
There are a certain number of voters who will be hateful always and forever. Mr. Wright did not ask (and explicitly stated in the essay) that compromise with hate is unnecessary.
I did read it. Compromise with fear. Just doesn’t make sense. You give up some of your fear and I will give up… what? Something that makes you fearful? What would that be? What are those rural voters afraid of? Minorities is one thing. Where is the compromise that will make them less fearful that is at all acceptable? Who do we toss under the bus to make them less fearful? As if that is even possible. That is but one example. I can’t think of any that make any more sense.

re: #217 JordanRules
Compromise with Steve King’s party??!?! Really y’all?
Fuck that noise. The best near-term possibility I can see is that Trump damages the GOP without getting us all the way into a post-apocalypse scenario and the GOP loses at least the house in 2018. That would at least get a band-aid onto the sucking chest wound of the Trump presidency*.
This requires a competent Democratic party effort in all states and enough of a wave election to overcome the GOP gerrymandering, so it’s definitely a stretch goal. But even this would do nothing about the long term fact that about half the electorate is poisoning themselves with this GOP shit and getting more rabid every year.
re: #230 Amory Blaine

Well, it’s probably not good to start with the majority who did not vote and call them “morons.” Propaganda’s a helluva drug, and for forty years or more people have been indoctrinated and evangelised with the idea “both parties are the same.”
Democrats can attack Republicans, sure, because politics is not a nice game. But Democrats also have to articulate clearly what they stand for (in every single precinct, running candidates in every position).

He addressed that too. Perhaps it’s Mr. Wright’s writing style … not everyone understood his position on this. Maybe like Rachel Maddow, he gets too deep in the subject and loses some readers:
You know, it’s funny. I came from the Heartland, the Midwest. I spent my life in the ultimate bastion of conservatism, the military. I lived in Alaska, the reddest of the Red States. I live now in the Panhandle of Florida among conservatives. I talk to these people. I eat with these people. I drink with these people. I’m related to these people. Those things up above? Many reasonable conservatives don’t really give a damn about those things. Not really. They want the same things you do, peace, security, safety, good paying jobs, decent schools and decent neighbors, bridges that don’t fall down, clean water, clean air, safe food, affordable healthcare, respect, pride, and it’s likely that we, left and right, have more in common than we don’t.
Look out there. What do you see?
Republican politicians can’t even talk to their own people.
Republican politicians are afraid, terrified, to face their own people in a town hall.
Doesn’t that suggest to you an opportunity?
The AHCA doesn’t go far enough for some Republicans. They’re holding out until it repeals all of civilization.

God yes. At least for the Democrats in Congress, compromise with the Republicans is unthinkable. It’s already a disappointment that some Democrats voted to confirm Trump cabinet members.
1) Gorsuch must be filibustered.
2) There must be no (D) votes for any GOP ‘repeal and replace’ of the ACA.
3) I can’t think of any reason for any Democrats to vote for anything else the GOP decides to bring up in Congress. Even a Republican bill to name a post office should be presumed corrupt until proven not.

That is not compromise. That is empathy and education.
And that was the thrust of his essay. He used the word “compromise” to spin up liberals. He even said so in the essay. What he is arguing for is empathy and compassion.
That last line: “Doesn’t that suggest an opportunity” (on Republicans afraid to face their own voters) - now is the time to face their voters for them. Listen to conservatives’ issues (as he notes they are mostly the same as ours: good schools, clean water, jobs, &c).
If Republicans are afraid of their own voters (as shown by their fear of town hall events), that is a sterling opportunity to address them ourselves. The GOP is leaving its own voters without their message.
When all those town halls were being cancelled and such, where were Democratic candidates or politicians to go to those places? (I heard of only one.)
The good news is that Trump is awash in the corruption of the GOP and this is our greatest ally. Bogging down the shit machine while we catch our bearings is the best we can hope for at this point.

I just don’t think it should kept being held up as if it’s THE reason we don’t make more gains. How about profiling more Hillary voters and as for strategy how about listening more to the groups who keep voting in a way that will help everyone, including the vaunted WWC voter.
How about leaving the extra work of chasing these voters to those who want to and stop trying to cram it into our platform per se. Why do they even get so much attention? As I’ve said, I think many have this rose colored image of the WWC because so many of us and I include myself come from those type of families. My mom’s grandfathers were both coal miners in fact in a region that was once staunchly Democratic but went overwhelmingly for Trump. Where I differ though is I have no illusions about why those voters left the Democratic Party. And honestly, I know AM doesn’t like it but let me be blunt a lot of them are idiots, I am sorry but that woman in Indiana who voted for Trump liking his immigration policy with a Mexican immigrant husband is an idiot. Trump attacked ALL Mexican and Hispanic immigrants with her rhetoric and to be honest, me calling her an idiot is mild to her mindset of “I’m okay with bad stuff happening to other people as long it’s not hte ones I love.”

No arguments here, labor is so important. My existence sometimes drives them off so others who may be better positioned to convince them might have to run that route. Just don’t let them pull us all back.
re: #195 HappyWarrior
Yeah there are certain principles I have that I don’t believe we should compromise. The ones you bring up are big ones. And you’re right. Compromise involves the other side giving something up too. I haven’t seen any desire for that. I’m not going to want to play nice with them until they acknowledge that my women, minority, LGBT, friends and family should have the same rights as they do. Until then, I’m just not in the mood.
The biggest problem I see in finding compromises is that one side believes in government by compromise, and the other doesn’t. I won’t bother trying to find the evidence, but I’ve seen a number of polls where they ask people what is important for them in an elected official, and while compromise is high on the list for Democrats, Republicans are far more likely to say ‘stands up for his principles no matter what’.
You see this reflected in the absolutist nature of the people elected by the GOP these days. Why was Boehner so widely despised, especially in his own party? Because he was an old-style dealmaker, leading a caucus of people who think the only good deal is one that leaves the other guy bleeding on the floor. There was a tweet today about the discussions with the HFC on getting the AHCA passed - they keep moving the goalposts. You move toward their position, and they move their position farther away.
I’ve said it before - they’re binary thinkers. Good or Evil. Why would you compromise with Evil? Win or Lose. If you don’t Win, you Lose, so to compromise is to be defeated.
So, it’s not just how far apart our positions are. We can’t even agree that compromise is a good thing.
I KNEW IT! You fuckers all ran off upstairs before I hit “Post It”!

I have a man near here that I love like a son, and he has been a long distance truck driver. I don’t think he voted in 2016, but I would not be surprised if he would have voted for Trump. So today we met and it was cold out, and I mentioned that case, and the trucker. He said it was impossible to stay with the trailer, and it sounded like a lawsuit if the trucker was fired. I told him it was, and that a panel of judges had sided with the trucker, except for one: Gorsuch. (My auto-correct turns Gorsuch into Grouch!) He hooted at that, and that Gorsuch was still claiming that he didn’t know what he would have done.
The way I have handled things with people around here that I know are conservative: they know I am liberal, and we talk about things we agree on, and occasionally I drop something like this, hoping to drip drip drip things that slowly make them open their minds a bit. The real young’uns tend to see through the crap better than some of the adults, and I encourage them.
