Trump Sent Message to Flynn as He Was Being Investigated: “Stay Strong”

Bad news day for orange president
Politics • Views: 38,566

The big news keeps coming, and it’s all bad for Pumpkin Pinochet.

The Trump transition team knew Michael Flynn was under investigation weeks before the inauguration, which makes a liar out of Mike Pence, since he was in charge of the transition team.

Flynn and other Trump campaign officials had at least 18 undisclosed contacts with Russian officials during the last 7 months of the campaign.

And last but not least, even after Trump fired Michael Flynn he remained in contact — at one point sending him a message telling him to “stay strong.”

Saddled with steep legal bills, Flynn wanted to reconnect with old friends and talk about potential future business opportunities. But one overriding question among those present were his views on the president who had fired him from his national security advisor post.

Flynn left little doubt about the answer. Not only did he remain loyal to President Trump; he indicated that he and the president were still in communication. “I just got a message from the president to stay strong,” Flynn said after the meal was over, according to two sources who are close to Flynn and are familiar with the conversation, which took place on April 25.

Even some Republicans are now starting to whisper the word “impeachment.” But with the revelation that the transition team knew Flynn was being investigated, if Trump does end up being impeached Mike Pence cannot be allowed to simply take his place. This whole gang of villains is corrupt.

Trump having no political experience is not the issue.

Trump being Fuckface von Clownstick is the issue, as well as his being a corrupt Rodent of Unusual Size (even for Republicans).

US Releases Two Turkish Bodyguards After Violence (goes to the Scottsbluff, NE Star-Herald)

The United States says it released two members of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s (REH’-jehp TY’-ihp UR’-doh-wahns) security detail after briefly detaining them during a violent incident outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence in Washington.

The State Department also says that it summoned Turkish Ambassador Serdar Kilic to discuss the altercation. The department says the ambassador met Wednesday with Tom Shannon, the acting deputy secretary of state and highest-ranking career U.S. diplomat.

The U.S. is declining to say whether the security agents were granted diplomatic immunity or under what conditions they were released.

The U.S. says there’s an ongoing investigation that will allow the U.S. “to hold the responsible individuals accountable.”

Video appears to show Erdogan’s bodyguards violently breaking up a protest this week while Erdogan was visiting Washington.

FR still down. JimRob’s update on Facebook:

Received a two part message from John. The first part went into some of the horror stories of procurement, replacement and recovery but he ended it upbeat. Sounds like he’s making great progress. Says he’s going to go up to San Jose and purchase some additional equipment then he should be ready to install. And he says installation should be straightforward as the drive is pre-loaded and ready to go. The only thing he left off was the timing and I haven’t heard back from him on that yet. Oops, he just responded to my question if we were going to be up today.. Said it depends on how many unexpected problems like he had yesterday pop up. Prayers up!

First, I don’t understand all this back and forth to San Jose, but more importantly, he’s been sending “prayers up!” for about 3 days now, and it has been ineffective. Possibly some decent hosting and tech support are in order rather than relying on the Almighty?

That is no more going to happen than McCain replacing Obama in birther fantasies. If Mueller comes up with the evidence that both Pence and Trump committed impeachable offenses, and they are both removed, then we get President Ryan.

I predicted last February when he made his Facebook post reprinted in every newspaper in the state that he could never support Donald Trump, he foresaw the likely fallout and was positioning himself to be a sane member of the GOP with the intent of rising in the party.

Before politics, Senator Sasse was a professor of history.

After Clownstick is finally out, we make a 50 state push for the 28th Amendment, eliminating the electoral college, and perhaps a codification in the constitution of the VRA so the court cannot fuck with it.

I was a defender of the EC, regardless of the primary reason for it being outdated. The secondary reason was valid and it failed to do that job and spare us this mess. So it’s worthless and needs to go.

I would be in favor of keeping it but only if the electors represented the population of each state and not its number of congressional delegates and if it were only to kick in if no candidate received a majority of the popular vote.

I would not be in favor of a runoff election system as many nations have…one vote every two years is enough to ask of our overtaxed electorate.

50
Anymouse  May 18, 2017 • 1:03:31pm

The most likely way to neuter the Electoral College would be the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (goes to Wikipedia).

The idea is since states are allowed to distribute their electoral votes any way they choose, each state enters into a compact that requires that state to cast all its EC votes for the popular vote winner nationally.

The compact comes into force when 270 electoral votes worth of states sign it into law.

Don’t forget Flynn’s role in protecting ISIS.

Slate has a good take on this:

One of Donald Trump’s main campaign themes was that, as president, he would quickly “bomb the shit out of,” “crush,” “destroy,” and “totally obliterate” ISIS. As it happens, before Trump took office, his predecessors in the Obama administration had spent months preparing plans to attack and seize ISIS’s capital—the Syrian city of Raqqa. All that Trump transition officials had to do to authorize the attack was approve the plan. But Trump’s team refused to do so and has not yet launched its own offensive. ISIS still holds Raqqa.
Also, in a total coincidence, the plan that Trump’s incoming administration rejected was vehemently opposed, for reasons of self-interest, by Turkey—aka the country that paid ex-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn $530,000 last year.

Get this part:

After a delay of four months—during which time Flynn was forced to resign for lying about his conversation with the ambassador from another foreign country that had paid him—the Trump administration ended up approving the Kurdish plan after all. For the time being, though, ISIS’s forces in Raqqa remain uncrushed and unobliterated. And, on Sunday, a group run by Ekim Alptekin will begin hosting its annual U.S-Turkey business conference in Washington—which, this year, has been moved from its previous location at the Ritz-Carlton to the Trump International Hotel.

A hypothetical here.

My state has a super-majority of Republicans in the Unicameral. For the sake of argument, Hillary Clinton took the popular vote here instead of Donald Trump.

The state legislature could still direct electors to vote for Donald Trump. That’s what we have now.

I have no problem with states like Mass., NY, Calif., &c (the states with the most people) signing on. One person one vote.

Small states like mine, and many others, want to retain their leverage. Wyo. has 520,000 people and gets the same two senatorial votes as California’s 30,000,000.

I have a theory to improve the US election system without abolishing the electoral college by incorporating proportional representation into Congressional and presidential elections are making the US into a multiparty system. This would result in the President being elected by Congress most of the time, making it more like a parliamentary system.

I really think it should be one person, one vote. Too bad for conservatives if large states like California are more Democratic in how they vote. The Republicans through their own actions are why CA is a bright blue state today. PS, I live in a purple state. But I really believe my vote should have the same meaning as someone in CA or VT.

This would result in the President being elected by Congress most of the time, making it more like a parliamentary system.

You’re proposing rewriting the constitution. The two biggest reasons for our two party system are 1) winner take all, and 2) staggered elections.

As for Lieberman. Unlike Comey and Mueller, he wasn’t a federal prosecutor and indeed he hasn’t been involved in prosecutions since he was the AG or Connecticut. He’s not the worst choice Trump could make but he’s not a good choice by any means. OF course, they’ll use the fact he was Gore’s running mate to claim that this is “bipartisan” even though Joe has been up the GOP’s ass since he supported McCain in 2008.

Which is why Johnny Maverick supports him.

Small states would oppose proportional representation. Wyoming would never allow California to have the equivalent representation it gets. The Senate is still two senators per state; to change that would require a Constitutional amendment (dead on arrival).

Anyhow, I support one man vote for the reasons why I said and it does work in other countries. It’s not like we’re the only nation that is divided in to states. Other countries have things like states, counties, provinces, etc.

No, that’s the beauty of it, the Constitution doesn’t have to be amended at all. Nothing in it requires single member congressional districts, or that state electors be assigned winner-take-all. In fact I’m pretty sure the Founders intended Congress to elect the President most of the time.

Has he ever come across the parking lots that have the buried wires that trigger the wheels on the cart to lock up?

Stores around Columbus started with those a few years back to prevent people walking off with a nice cart for home use.

First time I came across that I was pushing a CART at a pretty good clip as it was starting to rain. Yeah, I was smacked in the old mid-body pretty good.

And since I had backed into the parking space and was on the edge of the parking lot, the wire was buried at the front of the parking space. I was still 8 foot away from the hatch opening with a “dead” weight cart full of groceries. Not a happy customer that day.

If we end up seeing the downfall of Trump’s presidency*, I think the largest contributing factor will be that Trump simply cannot stick consistently to a single lying story.

For example, the Comey firing wouldn’t have turned into nearly the stink bomb that it did if Trump hadn’t contradicted the administration cover story (aka ‘cover lie’) the first night after it was put out.

The entire RWNJ noise machine was perfectly prepared to sing in chorus from the ludicrous talking points that Comey was fired for mishandling the Clinton email investigation. At least half the media would have followed along, out of both-siderist desperation for a Republican lie that is even faintly plausible.

But no, Trump just had to shart all over that, bigly.

But you can take the asshole out of New York and it makes no difference. Still an asshole, still feeling the need to rub everybody’s faces in all he was doing.

If he’d hired more people who knew how things actually work, they could have institutionalized a lot of his crimes without calling attention to them. But…no. Asshole’s gonna asshole.

Jonathan Alter just said Trump has never been hesitant to cut ties and eject people.

He cited Roy Cohn as an example. He said Trump dropped Cohn and stayed away as soon as Cohn was diagnosed with AIDS. Never knew that one.

Then he equated it to Trump not being able to dissociate Flynn. He then said all the time he has followed Trump, the only two people he had never heard Trump bash and criticize are Flynn and Putin.

My summation. Trump owes both something to be determined.

Little known fact for those who say “Why don’t they move somewhere else?”: When my aunt lost her home, she found out the hard way that her homeowners insurance would only pay 100% if she rebuilt on the same piece of land; if she chose to rebuild elsewhere she would only have received 60%. Jerry Coyne of “Why Evolution Is True” playing magic balance fairy about liberals delighting in Roger Ailes death, citing a Huffington Post headline.

whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com

Yes, Roger Ailes was “politically challenged” and a sexual harasser to boot, but one senses unsavory glee in HuffPo’s headline announcing his sudden death, probably from a fall in the bathroom combined with other medical ailments. Still, I can’t find it in me to celebrate Ailes’s death the way HuffPo did:

(the headline is “Groper Gone”)

He then goes after other people in the same manner who died, closing with an attack on liberals.

I’m not quite sure why we’re reluctant to speak ill of the just deceased, given that many of them, like Ailes, were vile people; perhaps readers can weigh in with their hypotheses. All I know is that when I hear someone say “I’m glad he’s dead,” I think less of the speaker. My one exception was Christopher Hitchens’s funny and splenetic take on the death of Jerry Falwell.

HuffPo has literally gone insane, and the headline above shows both its frenetic and kneejerk Leftism as well as its total absence of genuine humor

He invites comments on his blog post. Perhaps someone should give him a few?

I seem to have absorbed de mortuis nil nisi bonum early on, because I feel constrained from saying anything about Ailes, but what I will say is that the testimonials coming from people he DIDN’T sexually harass reminds me of something I saw yesterday on David Frum’s Twitter feed:

Podhoretz is clinging to the slender reed of Hannity being a nice guy - in his experience - in the face of his continuing to do something abhorrent. We all do this - we excuse the grandmother who says horrible racist things because we love her, for example.

But really, at some point, you can’t do or say horrible things and still be a good person.

323
Scottish Dragon  May 18, 2017 • 3:18:33pm

So this was the day at work yesterday:

My spouse and I take substitute jobs at a middle school well outside our city in North Carolina in farm country. Neither of us have been there before. The first instruction we get is to not smile at the students, as they will take it as a sign of weakness.

I’m not kidding.

I get my spouse situated at her room, and then I go back to mine to look for lesson plans. I have 7th grade math for the day. I can’t find plans.

None of the staff I have seen have said hello. Nobody smiles. They look exhausted.

Somebody helps me make copies of some worksheet to get by. As that happens, kids are coming in. Some of the kids are not actually part of the class, and are still in there after the bell rings. I order one large boy to leave and go to his class where he belongs. He lurches towards me, arms held back and looking like he is ready to start swinging at me while yelling “Why you gotta be like that, Coz?”

I walk into his body space and force him backwards, telling him I am not his “coz” and that I am the teacher here.

He tries to keep the bravado and physical threat up, but I force him out and shut the door. Now class begins…sort of.

Kids are in the halls and are out of control, running up and around and beating on my door and looking in the window. This happens through the day. The kids in all the classes are waaaaaaay behind on math for 7th grade. Most of them don’t even make a pretense at really working. All of the calculators in the class have been vandalized and damaged. The desks are damaged.

Fidget spinner toys are everywhere. It is obvious some of the girls have developed…early… and they are wearing very tight tops to let us all know that they have DD cup demi-bras on. There are 12 year old girls who can pass for street walkers. Some of the boys are wearing their pants down around their knees. Did I mention everybody has one of those damned fidget spinners?

One of the kids running wild in the hall refuses to speak in any intelligible language. When you address him, he points at you and starts making loud guitar sounds, and then follows you bellowing guitar sounds while gesturing like he is in some demented Sondheim musical as interpreted by a lunatic binging on mescaline.

Another teacher demands to know why the student is over on that side of the school. The guitar sounds and gestures find a new victim.

During my planning period, a girl takes refuge in my room. I ask where she is supposed to be and she replies that this is her encore period.

What encore do you have, Kiddo?

Art…

Why aren’t you in art?

There’s no teacher, and the kids are doing all kinds of stuff.

I digest that bit of intelligence in silence for a moment and invite her to please stay as long as she likes.

At lunch, I observe to one of the teachers that the entire staff looks like they have survived the siege of Richmond.

Teachers eating in the cafeteria are discussing getting out. They say the turn-around principal is a failure.

This is in front of students who are at lunch.

The staff look and sound defeated. The worst of the kids have taken over the school and they are destroying it.

My spouse and I go to the car and exchange horrified and horrifying anecdotes. Her throat is so sore from yelling that she can hardly speak. Her classes had been insulting her all day. I’m sure there is more she hasn’t told me yet.

That is a school, right now, in North Carolina.

Ignore he was killed? No. Ignore insane conspiracy theories? Yes.

Sean Hannity is trying to cast himself as the victim. And FOX News Channel’s sudden love for Wikileaks is certainly self-serving. I’ll bet it would disappear if a dump of documents about Roger Ailes came out from them.

When Rupert Murdoch fails to buy Sky Networks (for a second time) things will no doubt get really interesting.

Haven’t read how long he was in the Navy, but at age twenty it couldn’t have been very long. Most (but not all) Navy contracts are at least for four years (which might indicate he was let go early).

Minor rant, don’t talk to me about millennials and snowflakes when we have a President who literally complains about being made fun by a spoof show and uses his address to Coast Guard graduates to complain that he is by far the most mistreated politician ever. Harry Truman had a saying, can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

I’m sorry if my language on Ailes seemed harsh but you know what, I really want to know what positive the guy was trying to do. It wasn’t even Buckley who tried to spread conservative ideology. Ailes didn’t have ar eal ideology. He hated liberals and that was his business model for nearly a half century going back to his involvement with Nixon. That’s not an ideology. That’s a bitter bastard who can’t articulate his own beliefs without attacking the other-side’s patriotism and someone who needed scapegoats to keep his viewers. This guy won’t miss Ailes knowing how he treated women and minorities both in his personal life and professional life.

re: #73 Anymouse

A hypothetical here.

My state has a super-majority of Republicans in the Unicameral. For the sake of argument, Hillary Clinton took the popular vote here instead of Donald Trump.

The state legislature could still direct electors to vote for Donald Trump. That’s what we have now.

I have no problem with states like Mass., NY, Calif., &c (the states with the most people) signing on. One person one vote.

Small states like mine, and many others, want to retain their leverage. Wyo. has 520,000 people and gets the same two senatorial votes as California’s 30,000,000.

Tangentially, that’s another reason against Puerto Rico’s statehood bid. With a population of 3.5 million, it would eclipse many states.

Long thread on why Trump is inviting Flynn back to the White House. It explains that though Trump may not have started out thinking “fascism,” that it the only logical conclusion of what he needs to do now to stay in power.

There is a note in the thread about all the people who have a piece of the power to stop that thinking “someone else will do it” (profiles in cowardice).
