Just One Victory

It just seems appropriate somehow that Todd Rundgren play the theme song for this evening.

We’ve been waiting so long,
We’ve been waiting for the sun to rise and shine
Shining still to give us the will
Can you hear me, the sound of my voice?
I am here to tell you I have made my choice
I’ve been listening to what’s been going down
There’s just too much talk and gossip going ‘round
You may think that I’m a fool, but I know the answer
Words become a tool, anyone can use them
Take the golden rule, as the best example
Eyes that have seen will know what I mean
The time has come to take the bull by the horns
We’ve been so downhearted, we’ve been so forlorn
We get weak and we want to give in
But we still need each other if we want to win
Hold that line, baby hold that line
Get up boys and hit ‘em one more time
We may be losing now but we can’t stop trying
So hold that line, baby hold that line
If you don’t know what to do about a world of trouble
You can pull it through if you need to and if
You believe it’s true, it will surely happen
Shining still, to give us the will
Bright as the day, to show us the way
Somehow, someday
We need just one victory and we’re on our way
Prayin’ for it all day and fightin’ for it all night
Give us just one victory, it will be all right
We may feel about to fall but we go down fighting
You will hear the call if you only listen
Underneath it all we are here together shining still

Thank you to everyone who helped make this victory possible. (I’m going to pat myself on the back a little bit because I contributed thousands of yen [a few hundred U.S. dollars] to the Doug Jones campaign.)

It’s a bright beautiful afternoon here in Tokyo, and I’ve got a skip in my step that hasn’t been there since early November 2016.

Indeed. And this is a huge FU to the Bros who want to dismiss the importance of us addressing minority communities. I greatly appreciate that Jones showed not only respect to those communities but treated them as equals and allies in his coalition. It’s refreshing to see that from a White Southern Democrat.

Bakari isn’t a woman but he’s great. BD, he needs to leave CNN and be among the recruited. Though I think your hunch is right that he’ll go for Clyburn’s seat when he retires but I really think he’s potentially more than just a Rep, he could be a Senator too. He’s smart as hell and keenly aware of how we need to win going forward.

Doug’s campaign reminded me of even though he lost of Tom Perriello here in Va. It was a very positive campaign and about bringing Alabamans or in Tom’s case Virginians of all backgrounds together. That’s something that Governor elect Northam followed and that’s why Northam and both Jones won.

Yep and Doug brought them up too. That BTW has been what’s turned Virginia’s tide. It’s not merely NoVa being liberal. It’s that Va isn’t the state I was born into 30 years ago. It’s a diverse place. Wingnuts love to accuse liberals of living in bubbles but that as usual is projection.

538 says that possibility is definitely in play. It will be hard, even in the midst of a huge anti-Trump wave because the Dems have to hold 23 seats (I think) just to stay at (now) 49 votes, and some of the key races are in states that Trump won (Ohio and Missouri), but he just got a whole lot more toxic than he was (if that’s possible). I think Trump should be dreading 2020. He got lucky to run against Clinton, a candidate both his base hated and his Russian handlers did. Don’t get me wrong- HRC was the right choice and she would be a great president but he did luck into that. If he’s running against oh I dunno someone like Duckworth who is a legit hero, it could get really ugly for him and we could be looking at a big 2020 win with the potential to control the state houses for a good decade and the 20’s will be roaring.

I did some work for the party here in Va. We have a lot of experience here in tight races. The Jones campaign did a hell of a job. We picked a winner — but the big advantage was that the GOP selected a loser, a man who was totally unqualified based on his views of issues. And even with such a monster as an opponent, Doug defeated him by less than 2%. Strange would likely have won easily. We are not always going to luck out with GOP candidates that are so manifestly unfit for office.

I’m not naive but let me have some joy tonight. This is a very nice win and it’s a harbinger.

Yep. I mean Cory Gardner isn’t a perv like Moore is but he’ll be running in quickly becoming blue Colorado. The Republicans nominated to replace McCain and Flake will have to face a different electorate too. Let’s enjoy this one. One step closer to 51 and 218 begins tonight!

Not one, but TWO of his picks lost (Strange, and Moore).

The Democrats have to hold 23 seats with both independents (Angus King and Bernie Sanders), the Republicans have to hold 8, plus two seats opening (Jeff Flake and Bob Corker).

Let’s say Democrats manage to hold the same count. I think that still scares Republicans because they will be the ones having to defend a majority of the senate races in 2020, a presidential election year.

Well we thought we might lose the Senate in 2010. It’s not going to be easy but don’t underestimate two things) A) People are pissed at Trump and the GOP, B) Candidate recruitment. Look at our successes in the past month, all three our candidates for Senate and Governor have ran good campaigns. I choose to be glass half full tonight. We won guys, in Alabama, in an off year, special election!

Realistically, this should’ve been a 20 point win for any normal GOP candidate - even being an accused pedophile doesn’t account for the sheer magnitude of Democratic voter turnout and the shift in votes we saw tonight. All this, for an off-year special election.

Texas, I see going Virginia’s route and if it does, the GOP is going to be in a real rough spot. There may be some former reliable Democratic states that become swing states in the coming years but there may be some formerly reliable Republican ones like Texas that could be purple and as much as I have a sentimental touch for my family’s ancestral home state of Pa, Texas being competitive is much more important in the long run than PA.

Roy Moore is the spirit animal of the current GOP.

He’s all of their bullshit semantic emptiness: using familiar symbols and tropes as shallow invocations, ignoring the important details—like the content of the books, or the gun is a tool not a part of your masculinity cosplay set—because there is no depth to him, just a trompe l’oeil . He can lie and be creepy and run a PAC with all the integrity of a patent medicine wagon and think himself virtuous, because goodness is about ritualized displays.

It’s this weird blend of narcissism—all ideas bend to suit the need of the self—and aestheticism—such that seeming is being.

All the big concepts—God, chastity, capitalism—don’t really mean anything. It’s bullshitting as a worldview.

Worth noting that most African-American women, who gave Doug Jones a huge boost, are churchgoers. They’re “values voters,” every bit as much as evangelicals and other faith groups.

With way better values.

Just read that some guy named Courtland Sykes, a RWNJ and former Navy SEAL hoping to challenge Sen. Claire McCaskill next year recently told Gateway Pundit that Roy Moore has a “cavalry coming” to help out in Alabama.

Courtland, from one vet to another - you’re cavalry failed bigger than George Pickett’s.

I didn’t watch the returns as they came in — I haven’t been able do that since about 2000 — so after I got home from GOTV, I went out to dinner, had a nice beer and watched comedies on DVD for a couple of hours. Then I started going through the endless thread that preceded this one, and had just gotten to the “but I still think Moore is going to win” section when an email with the subject “We Just Got One Vote Closer!” arrived.

This was my third out-of-state congressional seat — contributing, phone banking, hoping — and FINALLY one of them came through.

I feel great tonight….

I’m all for a more left-leaning Democratic Party. I am also pragmatic: You don’t get there by demanding the whole ball of wax at once.

Moreover, the goal isn’t just a more left-leaning party. The bigger goal is to move the Overton Window to the left as well, moving the GOP left.

That can’t be done with a strategy of “pass everything I want or I’ll take my marbles and go home.”

Yes America, Voter ID Is a Poll Tax to Cheat at Elections (goes to Crooks and Liars)

Meet Marvin.

Marvin is a wonderful, sweet gentleman who lives in a tiny boarding house in Atlanta. We met him this summer and we started working to get him an ID. But Marvin was born in a Jim Crow town that didn’t give birth certificates to black babies. It’s tough enough to get a birth certificate REPLACED, but when you never had one in the first place… that’s a challenge.

So, we had to FOIA the Social Security Administration for something called a Numident Record.
It costs $27.

….It’s basically a history of your Social Security life and in some states, for some forms of ID, if you are a certain age you can use it in place of a birth certificate.

As you can imagine, the SSA is not the fastest agency in the world. It took almost four months to get Marvin’s ID. Our amazing volunteer Karen was on the phone with them every week trying to find out when they would mail the record. And Marvin was calling me every week because this ID means everything to him.

You see, Marvin is trapped in his home because in order to take wheelchair-accessible public transportation you need an ID to sign up. Seriously.

Not only that, but he is spending most of his income on rent for his very small room in the boarding house. He has an opportunity for better, less expensive housing but, you guessed it, he needs ID.

So Marvin called every week for three months and every week we had to say “We’re so sorry Marvin, we’re doing everything we can, we just have to keep waiting”. It was terrible.

But then the SSA finally mailed the form. It was thrilling. Of course, then we had the problem of transportation. Like I said, he can’t take public transportation. So we had to hire a private company to pick him up, wait while they were at the DMV, and take him home.
It cost $130.

There is no way Marvin would have been able to afford that on his own.

On top of that, Renna got a job (as RNC chair) but was forced to drop the Romney name.

Trump rubs Mitt Romney’s nose in it every chance he can get. Moreover, Renna shows conservatism to it’s core: Sorry Mitt, I got mine, screw the family.

Am I a coward? I can’t bring myself to defriend let alone go off on people whose political views are not only are the anti-thesis of what I believe politically but have many beliefs that go against what I believe defines my humanity. I’m starting to feel a little how those people who lost loved ones over things like the Civil War, the Spanish Civil War, Nazism, and other things. It thankfully won’t ever get to the point of violence but it does cause me great internal sorrow.

I suppose that concerns how much you actually depend on them. A friend or family member who holds political positions opposite yours are not necessarily bad (re: my wife and me), but when they are actively working against you, that’s another story.

I’ve never disowned a family member. All my cousins disowned me (four for being an atheist, one for voting for Hillary Clinton instead of Jill Stein).

There is no need to continually hold out to family or friends who are actively undermining you. It is hard to take, but might do you good to block them. You are under no obligation to tell them why, and you certainly aren’t under any obligation to constantly bend to their wishes when they are unwilling to bend to yours.

Minor good news on the local water front.

After our water tower project in June, we’ve been struggling to get our coliform tests back under the legal limit (failure means chlorinating the water). We just got back our third straight clean test in a row … the request went into the state a couple days ago to end chlorination of our water.

We have a good young stable of candidates. Your home state of Massachusetts has some good ones too. I like Seth Moulton and Joe Kennedy III too. There are a lot of awesome, thoughtful young Democrats out there who come from different walks of life but in their own way make me proud to be an American liberal.

WaPo’s final numbers:

Jones 670,561, 49.9%
Kid fucker 649,240, 48.4%
Write-in 22,777, 1.7%

I assume that most of the write-ins were staunch GOP loyalists who could never vote for a Democrat but just could not bring themselves to vote for a toy pistol-toting, pony-riding child molester. They really helped tip the scales.

Imagine growing tropical trees in western Nebraska — harvesting lemons and oranges, maybe even bananas.

It’s been done already. The North Platte Natural Resources District is planning to do it in the future.

The NRD is raising funds for a solar-powered, geothermal-heated greenhouse, sunk 4 feet into the ground over a network of ducts circulating 54-degree air warmed by the earth. The greenhouse would measure 126 by 17 feet and stand 14 feet high, said NRD Assistant Manager Barb Cross, who is overseeing the project.

Most likely trump won’t run in 2020. He’ll take the money from his re-election campaigh - and go home.

Whether the GOP leadership will take Moore’s loss as indication to cut ties with Trump is doubtful, though. They have blinker-vision, eyes only on their goals of recreating feudalism in the USA and pandering to their white demographic. They will take the GOP right off the cliff.

Democrats must make it clear that we cannot take the gains we have made in personal freedoms, women’s, minority or LGBT rights for granted. Nor can we take any reforms in labor law, environmental, consumer protections or public health for granted.

They are all under attack by a party and an administration that wants to roll back or ignore everything that has been done in recent decades to implement them.

That needs to be part of the core message. There are enough examples happening right under our noses if we do not let ourselves be distracted by DT’s inane tweets.

Michael Moore

@MMFlint
Black turnout today in Alabama was larger than it was 4 Obama’s election. Stunning. Tonight’s lesson: Everybody must vote! And when they have a great candidate they will show up. We must run real heroes who will win, not party-approved hacks. We’re the majority. Here comes 2018!

Michael Moore has many sins but at least when Hillary won the nomination, he supported her without reservation. He thought she would lose but he didn’t act as though she and Trump were equivalent.

The BernieBros demonize anyone who doesn’t share ALL their views; they still act as though there was no real difference between Hillary and Trump and their non-support cost Hillary the presidency (welll - that and Comey).

Maybe this alternative reality will turn out to be better in the long run: Hillary would have been persecuted her entire administration with false charges and the GOP would have kept their base energized. Instead it is the Dems who have the energy. I know the damage that Trump is inflicting on the judiciary for decades to come, but let’s see how this plays out in the long run. We may survive this yet.

After the victory last night, my sister texted me: Maybe there is hope for this country after all…

They did. But enough didn’t that he lost a seat that Republicans should not be able to lose. I don’t see, after last night, how anyone can claim that the GOP’s embrace of candidates like Roy Moore will give them a big advantage over Democrats. Here is a stat I heard last night: Jones got over 93% of Clinton’s November 2016 Alabama vote in a special election in December less than two weeks from Christmas, while Roy Moore got less than half of Donald Trump’s vote.

It tells us a lot about Alabama anyway. Here’s the thing; Roy Moore vastly underperformed what a Republican ought to be able to do in Alabama. Now imagine Republicans underperforming like that in much less red states. Its got me thinking that we are looking at a potential Democratic Tsunami next November.

It’s on Deray vs Pirro!

McKesson says Pirro was on “FOX & Friends” on September 28, discussing a lawsuit filed by the cop against BLM. According to the suit, Pirro made a series of outrageous and false statements about him.

In the docs, obtained by TMZ, DeRay says Pirro blamed him for directing the violence, and added, “You’ve got a police officer who was injured, he was injured at the direction of DeRay McKesson.”

DeRay believes Pirro made her statements knowing they were false — and it’s damaged his rep and endangered him as a civil rights activist. As we reported, a federal judge ruled McKesson was expressing his right to free speech at the demonstration, and it wasn’t his fault the officer got hurt.

DeRay’s suing both Pirro and FOX News for defamation.

OT: Mark Mothersbaugh finds unreleased tracks featuring Bowie and Eno as Devo jammed for first album….

Earlier this month, Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh participated in a “Song Stories” event at the Sonos Store in New York City which paid tribute to David Bowie nearly two years after his passing from cancer. During Mothersbaugh’s segment, he revealed the existence of an unreleased recording containing a jam session featuring members of Devo, Brian Eno, and the Thin White Duke.

According to Bedford + Bowery, the story came up when Mothersbaugh shared that he’s unearthed several tapes from the recording sessions for Devo’s debut album, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, which was produced by Eno with assistance from Bowie. Apparently, Devo’s bassist had missed a flight “because he was fighting with his girlfriend on an airport pay phone,” so everyone else at Conny Plank’s studio in Cologne, Germany made the best of it. “Devo jammed with David Bowie, Brian Eno, Holger Czukay [of Can], and a couple other odd Germans that were electronic musicians that happened to be hanging out there,” Mothersbaugh shared….

DeRay’s suing both Pirro and FOX News for defamation.

tmz.com

Great. I hope some crack lawyers that want to see Fox suffer take on the case just for the type of case it is and what it could mean.

Go DeRay Go. Puffy tube vests rule.

Sure, he would’ve liked Moore to win, but I think what he really wants (and he has said so) is to destroy the GOP Establishment, even if that means Democrats regaining power in Washington, so that a radical right party rises from the ashes and will be poised to seize power in the next economic downturn. Husband and I watched the results come in with our 12 year old and 15 year old last night. The closer the race, the more my husband was dancing like a fool. When the urban areas were the only ones outstanding, he proclaimed, “We got it. Jones won. It’s over.” Selma was the kicker.

I tried to explain to the boys why their mother was tearing up. Then the chants of “USA” started and I lost it.

Because Selma.
Because Doug Jones.
Because Trump.
Because African American voters did it. They raised their voices with a fist.
Because it’s Alabama.
Because it’s the South.
Because it’s hope.

And then I told them though sobs, “Because they believed the women. They believed us. And it turned an election.”

You’re next, Donald. Senators Duckworth and Warren and Gillibrand are done with you. You are in their sights.

I wouldn’t say I’m WWC in the slightest but my mom certainly grew up that way. She was the first in college. Dad while not from a working class family did go bankrupt at one point and was a waiter for much of my childhood. My parents met waiting tables. I’m honestly tired of Bros thinking only they understand people like this. The thing about my ties to the WWC is it doesn’t define me. It’s a part of who I am but I’m also someone who works with immigrants, racial minorities, etc and has counted them as friends and family. That to me is more important than that my mom’s dad was a bricklayer. I mean the values he taught my mom are important obviously but Dad’s Dad was just as white collar and taught good lessons too.

What really impressed me is how the Jones campaign really reached out to those minority voters. He WAS proud of his work accomplishing justice for the four little girls and in eventually prosecuting Eric Rudolph. Let this be a lesson to white Democrats, PoC are key parts of our base, if we’re going to be nominated to represent them or govern them, let’s work with those communities to get out the vote. Hmm. Just heard on the radio via NPR that the governor of MN is going to announce the Lt. Gov as Franken’s replacement. The news to this is that she is going to run for the office in November. That would correct one of my bigger complaints about her in that position though I still worry about his health & lack of a Democratic Lt Governor; if something happens to him and MN somehow ends up with a GOF governor to go along with their GOF controlled legislature, they’d be as fucked as Wisconsin.

I’m proud to be a miner’s great grand kid but I’d much rather have a thoughtful small business owner than a bigoted miner part of my party’s coalition. As an Ohioan…I hate Jim Jordan. That regressive blockhead needs to shut the hell up. He represents Ohio farm country though, west of Columbus/Central Ohio, so his seat is probably pretty safe with the Ohio Pick Up Truck crowd in his area.

He helped found the Freedom Caucus and served as its first chairman.

I think some people sadly even friends can be just bigoted. It’s making me sick.

You are getting older Happy. What you are seeing is people you thought were cool separating from you due to the thinking they pick up and grow into. There will be more of it and it is why you end up with a few good deep friends as you age and a lot of memories of people you met but would not like to associate with further.

And it happens in families too. You hear all kinds of stories here about that.

I remember a guy I met in college that was a wild man, hippie-type that was popular with everyone because he was the party clown ready to thrown down a good time with everyone no matter who or what they were.

Now, not a single person that I still see from that time goes anywhere near him. He is such a hardass conservative he is unbearable to be around. He turned out to be a complete whack job. he went from all fun to no fun at all because he can’t help but put down people for their own thoughts.

and the GOP even had a backup plan, namely to have Alabama change its laws to allow the governor to appoint a replacement for two years rather have another special election . Then they could’ve held hearings on Moore soon after he was seated and run him out, thereby generating the image of propriety - and then have him replaced by a more sane GOP candidate who would be easily reelected in 2020

I think that’s what has the Bros in the biggest tizzy right now, that their 11th hour “break” from Jones due to his not promoting $15/hr min wage and universal health care did not lead to his defeat. Their entire belief system rests upon the idea that the key to winning elections is appealing to that “economic anxiety” among the “working class” (i.e. poor white guys). So to have a Dem win without appealing to the WWC completely blows apart their belief that such is impossible.

I loved these guys. One of the few bands in the 80s that was all about the music and none of the bullshit that came with it.

[Embedded content]

I haz a big sad over this. One of the great bands of all time and like you said they did it for the tunes. And they were a band…a band of friends that worked together to bring us happy jangling guitar songs.

Here is my contribution to Pat’s memory. One of my all-time Beatles songs performed by the band in a radio studio. R.I.P. rocker.

The one who’s teachings I follow would not be recognized by them. I remember the first time I read “The Grand Inquisitor” from Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novel The Brothers Karamazov and thinking that it wasn’t possible that people could be that willfully blind and evil.

Fast forward a few years & too much experience later and I still SMH at them but simply try to clean up the mess they, in that evil, left behind them.

Help the poor. Feed the hungry. Care for the sick. Visit those imprisoned. Do onto others as you’d have them do onto you. Love mercy. Do justly. Walk humbly alongside God.

If a Dem can beat a Wingnut child molester in Alabama then surely a Dem can beat The Zodiac Killer in Texas.

As a constant lurker/somewhat shy poster, it is wonderful to see these long comment threads full of optimism and hope instead of the despair that has plagued us since last November. Today I am happier than I have been in a long time.

I saw earlier in a Twitter comment that AL went to Trump +28 last year while Texas was only +9. After last night I am feeling very hopeful for the Lone Star state!

I’d like to thank Charles for providing an oasis here, and fellow lizards for the sharpest commentary on the webs. You guys keep me very well informed!

I agree.

I agree. We may be too gerrymandered to win the house races right now, but last night gives me great hope that O’Rourke can beat Cruz by a much wider margin than AL. Eventually demographics will overtake the gerrymandering though.

I love my Senator Kaine but in hindsight maybe it would have been better to make one of them the running mate. I’d welcome either to run for POTUS though.

Seinfeld? Agh. Loved that show. Makes me sick that Bannon was involved. He produced the Titus Andronicus film I saw.

I’ll be damned. I had no idea he was a Co-executive Producer of Titus.

I really hope so. Cruz is just so miserable and O’Rourke just as good as Cruz is bad.

Yep, I found that out later. I read the play in college and it was the only production I could find and we like Sir Anthony Hopkins in our family so it sounded like a good bet but it was very surreal. My brother and I liked the latest MacBeth much more.

I admit to being pleasantly surprised by last night’s result. I didn’t think enough black voters would turn up or be allowed to vote to swing it. Congrats to all those here and everywhere who worked so hard for it to happen. I hope it starts a sea change, a change in the course of history.

Out of interest, has Chris Cilizza written about how bad this is for Democrats yet?

He did and amazingly did not say it was terrible for Democrats, but bad for Republicans! cnn.com

The most pathetic thing for me was seeing Cory Gardner say Jones should switch parties to “represent his state.” First off, he was elected with the support of Dems and Indies. Secondly, you represent a state that went for Obama and Clinton, why don’t you respect your state’s wishes. /// Thirdly, you must be petrified of losing your own seat in 2020.

I’d imagine that right about now, there’s a lot of soiled Fruit of the Looms among the GOP. They’ll put on a good public face, of course, but behind the scenes, they’ve gotta be shitting bricks.

Overtaking gerrymandering can be really difficult and sometimes it reflects the actual distribution of population and not a deliberate gerrymander. Minorities cluster in cities. Look at comment 757 above for the problem.

Well, now’s Steve’s big chance to start Breitbart TV.

I know there’s OANN, One America News Network, which is even more wingnutty than FNC. Just speaking objectively, there’s an opportunity for Bannon to become a media mogul. The question is, does he have the money and the mojo to pull it off?

He might but does he have the time. The guy looks like one of the first double tap in the next zombie apocalypse.

GOP primaries are only going to get worse. Bannon doesn’t care about the GOP. He cares about establishing a racist state.

I’m not sure he’s even seriously racist. I think he’s an anarchist. Pick up power and money in the chaos.

Yeah, Bannon’s got a lot of $$$ from Seinfeld. He’s not some billionaire, mind you, but he’s certainly not living off Top Ramen or anything.

yes, I read about that, he made something like $50 million off it and decided to use it to start making a career in political journalism.

My buddy used to be in charge of entertainment at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff in the 80’s. They hosted a then relatively unknown comic, Jerry Seinfeld.

After the show, he asked if Jerry would like to go out and see the town, to which he responded that he had to go work on the pilot for a sitcom he was working on

Buddy says he remembered thinking “Another sitcom, just what the world needs…”

Whatever else you can say about Bannon, he had enough sense to take a percentage rather than a payment over his role in financing the show.
