re: #6 MsJ

It depends on the coming election.

The Democrats need to take more than 2 seats in the Senate, in order to checkmate Pence and the Republicans. Also of course to take the House in order for a bill of impeachment to pass.

Once this happens, some of the more rational Republicans will see that going with the flow will be better than fighting the stream.

Unrolled thread on just how betrayed Canada feels today (from Twitter):

threadreaderapp.com

Much of the post-1945 liberal international order, and especially after 1989, was based on two principles: collective security (i.e. NATO) and free trade (i.e. the EU, GATT, NAFTA, the WTO etc). Trump is systematically undermining both. This is a tectonic shift in world history.

I fear even people who really should know better are in denial about the damage that is being done. Even if Trump & everyone else steps back from the brink of a global trade war, these are massive body blows to the integrity of what remains of liberal internationalism.

Americans perhaps don’t appreciate how dependent the Canadian economy is on US trade. So the idea that Ottawa is slapping 16 *billion* dollars worth of tariffs on the US is incredible. It shows, as I’ve said before, how existential a threat this is for the Canadian govt.

When your closest neighbor & most steadfast ally, w a tenth of your population, slaps 16 billion dollars worth of tariffs on your goods something has gone catastrophically wrong. And that CDN officials have explicitly invoked CAN’s military contributions is also noteworthy.

That’s an emotional appeal, one that likely doesn’t register in this WH, but it is a clear signal of how fundamentally Ottawa feels betrayed. And that’s a sentiment largely shared by the EU states. So, beyond the economic impact, it’s the political fallout that will burn us all.

My point is, there are daily affronts and scandals with this administration and it’s hard to keep track of it all. But today may have been a genuine historical turning point. This is the end of an epoch and I, for one, am genuinely frightening of the future that awaits. /xxx - Jasmin Mujanović

In the old days, these wars would have gotten a lot more physical by now. Today we’re a bit more sophisticated, but the warfare continues.

In some respects the two sides in the US Civil War were closer together than the partisan chasm we have now.

Abolitionists and slave holders inhabited the same reality and disagreed on whether or not slavery should be part of that reality.

Now US liberals and conservatives inhabit completely different realities.

Kurt Schlichter needs a pointed reminder that it’s called “hate radio” for a reason.

There’s also the inconvenient fact that as soon as a few US RWNJ evangelical preachers starting preaching the anti-gay gospel in Africa, there was a notable uptick in incidents of murderous gay-bashing in the affected countries. Can’t think why.

re: #41 EPR-radar

In some respects the two sides in the US Civil War were closer together than the partisan chasm we have now.

Abolitionists and slave holders inhabited the same reality and disagreed on whether or not slavery should be part of that reality.

Now US liberals and conservatives inhabit completely different realities.

I disagree with this thesis. Southerners and abolitionists did not occupy the same reality: the South and their religious leaders believed that blacks were subhuman; that they were cursed by the mark of Ham; and the whole system supported enslaving them; they could be beaten, murdered, and raped with impunity, with no legal remedy at all. This despicable attitude was enshrined in the laws of the South.

Yes, there are still police officers and others targeting and murdering African Americans, and our laws are still woefully inadequate in protecting minorities, but there is no comparison between the laws of today and those of 175 years ago. Despite the Orange Yam, we have not yet reverted even to the 1950’s, let alone the 1850’s.

I know that this is not a popular position here but I am in favor of commuting Blagojevich’s sentence, which always seemed outrageously disproportionate to his crimes. Rod is a moron but he’s not vicious or cruel. An acquaintance of mine was an economic adviser to the governor; he felt strongly that Rod cared about the people of the state and tried to do what was best.

I have no problem with the idea of complementarianism as it is presented. “Different but equal” is a sound idea, because men and women are physically, mentally, and emotionally different. The key is in the last part, “but equal”. None of these religious nutjobs seem to want to regard women as equal in any way, despite their philosophy claiming otherwise.

The English colonies in America inherited the English form of patriarchy, backed by the various English speaking churches, which essentially gave women no rights. Coverture is the key concept here.

The Quakers, being radicals, broke from that a bit.

Our current American form of fundamentalism is idealizing that early form of patriarchy, to various extents, some more than others.

If anyone cares about rights for all, then one has to resist this fundamentalism.

And no, we don’t have to worry about Islamic fundamentalism here. It’s just not at all politically relevant to the American scene. For places like Turkey and Egypt - yes, they are at risk.

But here in the good ol’ USA, it is Christian fundamentalism which is threatening human rights.

The key is in the last part, “but equal”. None of these religious nutjobs seem to want to regard women as equal in any way, despite their philosophy claiming otherwise.

Complementarianism is bullshit, because men and women are more alike than different, as we’re both homo sapiens. On top of that complementarianism, as it’s conceived, does absolutely nothing for women like me who are single, divorced or widowed. The assumption of comp. is that women would be married, and guess, what, a LOT of us are not! In fact, I would argue that comp. is a reaction to a major change in the demographics of adult women: now more adult women in America are not married than married. This change happened in the last decade and is significant—when I was born in 1960 more than 72 percent of adult women were married. I could rant on this, but I’ll spare the lizards. But please, men and women are not so different that we need separate ways of relating. That’s just horseshit.

And I am so glad I am on LGF where I can use my potty mouth. Because I’ve been picketing the Sovereign Grace people for the past couple of months and they’ve taken to following me on social media to see when I’m going to picket next, I’ve dropped the use of some of my favorite words so as not to overly offend people. Another person we have to keep this country safe for: An 8 year old boy has his mom pull over so he can help an elderly woman up the stairs:

“He was like, ‘Mom, can I help her go up the steps?’ I said, ‘Sure,’ so he jumped out,” said Maurice’s mother, Contricia Hill.

“I started to help her out because she was struggling up the stairs,” Maurice said.

Maurice says he loves the elderly. “They are so nice to people and they will help some of the kids out. They love kids.”

The Last Word tonight talked about the evil Trump policy of separating children from the parents when the parents cross the border without authorization. The discussion mentioned people who are vocal about family values and their religion supporting this appalling policy. But Lawrence seemed to overlook that this is nothing new: the pastors supporting slavery also claimed to be good Christians. It is not a rare to see religious people clamoring for monstrous treatment of those they deem their opponents or less worthy or in violation of their rules.

I can’t take credit for this one. “Chris Webber, you’re off the hook.”

re: #208 Eclectic Cyborg

But he’s also an asshole incel and white supremacist.

True. Not GOP, but just like GOP on every issue. Except the pedo, that’s not on the GOP’s platform.

Sorry Rick Wilson, you helped build the Republican Party. You have not apologised for your part in what we have now. You are no different than the other Republicans such as Jennifer Rubin or Bill Kristol who are only angry that Trump is using a fog horn instead of dog whistles. You’ll go right back to being a lap dog for their dishonesty as soon as Trump is gone.

It’s the Libertarians who seem to have a problem with that sort of thing, along with civil rights in general. A good chunk of their party are okay with it, because they see everything through the “private property” lens and coveture and slavery are aspects of private property.

re: #192 whitebeach

According to wikipedia (yeah, I need to check more sources), at least through publication of The Art of the Deal, Donald Trump continued the lie that his Trump ancestry was Swedish rather than German. This is the asshole who has the nerve to call Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas.” But of course now that he’s an out-nazi, fuck the Swedes, heil the Germans.

If you are trying to pass off yourself as of Swedish heritage, please see to it that your name does not mean “Sullen” in Swedish.

And don’t send your Swedish relatives a package that says “Gift”? Or is that an urban legend?
