“With Or Without You” by U2, arranged and performed by Luca on his Reversed Triple Neck Guitar built by Davide Serracini. The third neck, reversed, has an e-bow attached to it that keeps the central string vibrating, producing a constant high pitched sound that imitates the iconic original version of the song. The wooden percussive device on the guitar is called Multi Clap. More info below:

I was thinking that the guys from 10cc invented the Ebow, but I was getting the Ebow confused with their Gizmo. It looks like they were both invented in 1969, but the Gizmo was never reliable so they quit making them. Did they do the same thing?

The gizmo was a mechanical version, using little spinning wheels and motors to ‘pluck’ the strings.

When I lived in Philly, a couple of friends worked at a company called MusiTronics in New Jersey (maker of the Mu-Tron pedal), which was working on development of the Gizmo re-named the GizmoTron. It was a non-stop headache for the company, it was an ‘intrusive’ install (meaning you had to drill holes in the guitar to fasten it), it was big and clunky, and after trying to get it into production for a couple of years they simply gave up on it.

There’s a company that’s making an updated version, but it still looks like if you installed it on a guitar it wouldn’t be of much use other than being a ‘Gizmotron guitar.’

Gizmo was way complicated. Where the Ebow basically vibrates one note at a constant speed, the Gizmo was able to play several notes and even have different pressures for tonality and length of the note.

That my simplistic explanation.

I remember reading once Stewart and Gouldman (5 cc of the 10!) tried to work out a deal with bubblegum producers Super K Productions (Jerry Kasenetz and Jeffrey Katz) to do songwriting and full productions of those songs for Super K to distribute as the label in America.

The Gizmo was figured in because they thought they could go for their own “Wall of Sound” that would be great for pop music all done by two guys. Another version of a hit factory.

Don’t know how true that all is. But I do have some familiarity with Super K and their ways.

Well, they did kind of work up a Wall of Sound on ‘I’m Not in Love,’ which was a combination of Gizmo and tape-looped vocals.

I could see them writing some bubblegum hits for sure - their first UK single was a pretty canny approximation, with a sideways nod to Brian Wilson.

Yeah, it would be hard to do anything besides Gizmo-ing with that guitar.

You do get the polyphonic capability with it, but it would be like mounting a Cadillac bumper on the top of your guitar.

I came out of Guitar Center and the thermometer in my truck said it was 99 degrees, and the humidity is pretty thick. It’s not much better here on the South Shore - 92 at last glance, with zero breeze.

They didn’t have the cabinets I wanted in stock, but they’ll be in on Thursday. Just as well - the last thing I felt like doing was lugging speaker cabinets around in that soup.

We should be glad that he current Administration did not get their wish to cut deeply into the various discovery programs. When Congress did the the funding for 2018 they just punted and decided to roll over the funding as it was previously planned.

But for the 2019 budget, if Congress gets around to it before the election, I wonder how many of these kind of NOAA programs will survive.

NOAA does have a smaller ship, also with an ROV, called the Nautilus. I have not been watching their ROV broadcasts. But before the Okeanos ROV begins again (in August, in Bermuda), the Nautilus will be using an ROV off the coast of British Columbia:

They’ll be doing ROV exploration in July. They have a website that can stream video (as well as on Youtube): nautiluslive.org

NOAA’s proposed mission change does indeed do just that. I believe I’ve commented on it before.

Some are concerned about the dropping of “climate”: ucsusa.org

But to me the bigger problem is what you hinted at, that the idea is to make NOAA into some sort of agency for a new type Manifest Destiny.

And this was my favorite episode where Admiral Nelson meets…THE LOBSTER MAN and of course it starts with a “Rock and Roll” sequence!

Citing a recent survey of American households, Heritage found only 0.08 percent of American households (or about to 250,000) are in “deep poverty,” defined by Heritage as living on less than $4 a day. This statistic does account for government social spending programs that help the poor — like Medicaid, food stamps, and housing assistance — while the figure cited by the U.N. does not.

“No one likes the official poverty measure because it doesn’t count the enormous assistance we provide low-income Americans,” said Robert Doar, a conservative scholar at the American Enterprise Institute think tank. “It makes you think they have very little — that they have nothing — when in fact that’s not true.”

AEI doesn’t think they’re poor because of the assistance they’re lobbying to take away.

America, 2018:

Make Worship Patriotic Again? The Top 10 Songs for Fourth of July Services

At Sunday services this weekend, churches across the country will direct congregants to flip to the section of classic patriotic songs in their hymnals or display lyrics to more recent nation-centric tunes like Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA,” Chris Tomlin’s “America,” or even “Make America Great Again,” a song composed at First Baptist Church of Dallas using President Trump’s famous slogan.

Despite ongoing concerns over conflating worship of God with worship of country, the majority of churches in the United States mark the Fourth of July in song—a tradition that in some places goes back to the years surrounding America’s first Independence Day.

[…]

So much concern

[…]

Most Americans—especially evangelicals—continue to believe, as many of the songs imply, that America has a special relationship with God.

While a majority of Protestant pastors (61%) believe it’s important to celebrate the country around July 4, they also recognize the tensions at hand. A 2016 LifeWay survey found that a little over half say their congregation sometimes seems to love America more than God.

You know what? We did a lessons and carols (just like Christmas) service today. But the lessons were from John Adams, Chief Seattle, Fredrick Douglas, Abraham Lincoln, Robert Kennedy about the wrongs we have done, the hurts we still need to heal and the power of hope. North Korea knows that the future to their missile program is to go solid rocket booster.

It allows more flexibility, quicker responses, etc., and it’s the same trajectory in development that both the US and Russia have made over the past 70 years of missile development.

Of course, Trump and his know nothing advisers still think North Korea is denuclearizing, when the opposite is occurring. Trump got played and he doesn’t even realize it.

I disagree, the opening scenes totally feed into the worst Trumpist fears over border security and terrorism. The fact that three quarters of the way through the movie Catherine Keener’s character discloses that the actual facts underpinning one of those scenes “changes the narrative” doesn’t do anything meaningful to reduce the festering toxicity.

The cinematography and editing was okay but the way it presents Mexico as an intractably broken, hopeless alien malignancy that the US has no real ethical responsibility for and can justifiably manipulate and destabilize further was tired, despicable, amoral and utterly indefensible.

However, what Sollima — or anyone involved with the movie — could never have predicted was that it would be released at a moment when the topic of borders and immigration are dominating the news cycle and social media.

The movie began shooting on election day 2016. You cannot honestly think the filmmakers weren’t aware that border security was still going to be a contemporary hot button issue when it was released. They purposely put that bullshit at the beginning in there to play into the absolute worst xenophobic fears that Trump stoked just like when the producers of 24 had Jack Bower torture folks during the height of the debate over the US torture program.

I just can’t bring myself to assume that “bullshit at the beginning” was planned to riff off Trump at that point. But hey opinions vary. I’m not happy about the ending, too much setup for the next one, already sure to be filmed. Shooting election day. Script work was well previous to that day.

I have to admit I was ready to dislike Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez because of her Bernie connections, because Bernie Sanders really alienated me in 2016. Big time.

But after watching some of her appearances today, I have to say I like what I’m seeing. This may change, but people like her are ultimately going to be the future of the liberal agenda in this country, whether it’s called the Democratic Party or not.

And we’re in a fight for our lives right this fucking second.

She’s a deft politician, emphasizing her similarities with the party and not her differences. That’s what voters are looking for.

She will undoubtedly have differences with Pelosi and other more mainstream leaders, but she’s sharp enough to express them with a velvet tone, while reminding them she does have some electoral power that wants a more progressive bent to policies.

She appears to want Sanders’ goals, but not necessarily is married to his methods or to the man himself.

I like her. She supported Bernie but so did a lot of people under 30. She’s tough and unlike Bernie actually sees what’s going with immigrants as a real issue not a “distraction” as he’d call it.

re: #170 goddamnedfrank

Keep in mind that it is just a movie and given the subject matter, it was certain to exaggerate and capitalize on fear. That’s how you create the stakes in a film narrative. Poor timing? Absolutely.

As to your comments regarding the hopelessly broken portrayal of Mexico is in the film, I would ask you to look past the bombast and look at the scene where Del Toro and Isabela Moner arrive at the desert farm. The husband recognizes her and no doubt knows that whether he refuses them sanctuary, or agrees — he has compromised his family. But he does it because it is the right and moral thing to do. I would ask you to look at the scene between Josh Brolin and the Federale where it was demonstrated the type of joint cooperation that undoubtedly happens between US and Mexican authorities regardless of the political rhetoric.

As to your statement that the filmmakers purposely added in the opening sequence to appeal to the worst instincts of Mango Mussolini and his kin, I would ask for proof that occurred. Without that proof your statement is absurd given the simple fact that it is the events of that sequence which drives the rest of the movie. Which would mean everyone from Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures, Black Label Media to Sollima and Sheridan agreed to a complete rewrite of the script, the day after Trump was elected, and miraculously put it all in motion in a manner so efficient never to have happened in the history of cinema …

I’ve worked in the industry most of my adult life and it simply isn’t how things happen.

It’s quite okay to dislike the film for a variety of reasons, but please spare the Alex Jones type conspiracy theories. Again, if you have some evidence this happened, I would very much like to review it. I should have a copy of an early draft of the script in the near future and I will certainly let you know if the sequence is included.

… all their hope & merriment snuffed out for ever, and their voices fading on the winds of thought, from memory to memory, from hour to hour, until they are no more to be recalled.

Diary entry, 13 July 1916

From the diary of Siegfried Sassoon — known as “Mad Jack” who won the DSC for actions in the Somme, then later wrote the essay pasted below (while in the trenches). It caused quite a stir upon publication in London newspapers. It is one of the single most articulate refutations of the glory of war. Particularly in its scathing assessment of military leadership.

Senior Officers couldn’t afford to prosecute a serving war hero, so they shipped off the a retreat for officers in the high-country of Scotland for a fitness evaluation. While there, he befriended, inspired and guided Wilfred Owen, the greatest of the Great War poets.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-
Lt. Siegfried Sassoon.
3rd Batt: Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
July, 1917.

I am making this statement as an act of wilful defiance of military authority because I believe that the war is being deliberately prolonged by those who have the power to end it. I am a soldier, convinced that I am acting on behalf of soldiers. I believe that the war upon which I entered as a war of defence and liberation has now become a war of agression and conquest. I believe that the purposes for which I and my fellow soldiers entered upon this war should have been so clearly stated as to have made it impossible to change them and that had this been done the objects which actuated us would now be attainable by negotiation.

I have seen and endured the sufferings of the troops and I can no longer be a party to prolonging these sufferings for ends which I believe to be evil and unjust. I am not protesting against the conduct of the war, but against the political errors and insincerities for which the fighting men are being sacrificed.

On behalf of those who are suffering now, I make this protest against the deception which is being practised upon them; also I believe it may help to destroy the callous complacency with which the majority of those at home regard the continuance of agonies which they do not share and which they have not enough imagination to realise.

When pundits have tried to push her on whether her “free college/medicare for all/etc” was something the Dems should push nationally, she was vehement about NO!!, very smart in how she framed the “some districts candidates can take the risk of articulating utopian ideals, most districts it’s enough to just be slightly, incrementally, more liberal than their opponent.”

The most recent season of American Horror Story, on the other hand, was absolutely 100% written because of and about the 2016 election.

The opening scene of the first episode is people in Michigan watching election results on TV, the lesbians’ marriage is in trouble because one of them is furious that the other voted for “JILL FUCKING STEIN ARE YOU KIDDING ME?” “But I just don’t trust Hillary, her e-mails…” There’s some MAGA neighbors, there’s dishonestly edited youTube videos, there’s media malpractice, everything a politics-related horror story needs.

it’s not a spoiler to say that most of the characters are dead by the end of the season, in gruesome ways…

Sure, the difference is the season premiere was in September of 2017, and since TV shows shoot concurrently while the season airs they have more flexibility to address current events.

Feature films are very aggressively locked into a narrative structure long before-hand due to enormous expense, pre-booked theatrical release and the myriad schedules of talent, key crew members and marketing.

Of the three I have eaten at, Taco Bell, Chipotle, and Qdoba, I would pick Qdoba.

I have been to Moes’s, Qdoba, Chipotle, and Taco bell, Never even heard of Baja Fresh and the nearest Del Taco is almost 600 miles away.

For me Moe’s, Qdoba, and Chipotle are almost interchangeable, although the queso burrito at Qdoba is the bomb so they may get a slight edge.

I think the only reason Taco Bell won is because they have more locations than all of the other ones combined.

re: #206 Not Approved By The MPAA

These two weak examples do nothing to offset the mass betrayal by the Mexican police convoy, which presents the “cooperation” you see as an inherent liability and asserts as fact that Mexican law enforcement is intrinsically untrustworthy and likely to murder their US counterparts at any moment. As for the farmer was just there to humanize Del Toro’s character and re-affirm the loss of his daughter in his back story and his deafness was presented both to isolate him from the assumed corruption of his society and to again give Del Toro some much needed depth.

As to your statement that the filmmakers purposely added in the opening sequence to appeal to the worst instincts of Mango Mussolini and his kin, I would ask for proof that occurred. Without that proof your statement is absurd given the simple fact that it is the events of that sequence which drives the rest of the movie.

Honestly if you can’t see the mass suicide bombing by Islamic terrorists at the beginning immediately following the suicide bombing of the Islamic terrorist who came across the border and killed the ICE agents as a nod to the worst fears Trump has stoked then I just can’t fucking help you. What’s absurd is you fucking asking me to offer some “proof” of the filmmakers intentions in putting that right at the beginning.

It doesn’t mean any of that. Listen, I’m trying to stay nice about this but your condescension and obtuseness about this is wearing on my last goddamned nerve. That particular plot point, whatever the goddamned motivation, is an unbelievably irresponsible thing to put in front of an American audience and plays to our worst biases and xenophobic fears.

I’ve worked in the industry most of my adult life and it simply isn’t how things happen.

Your appeal to authority is unconvincing.

It’s quite okay to dislike the film for a variety of reasons, but please spare the Alex Jones type conspiracy theories.

Go fuck yourself.

Again, if you have some evidence this happened, I would very much like to review it. I should have a copy of an early draft of the script in the near future and I will certainly let you know if the sequence is included.

No, seriously, go fuck yourself.
