Trump Suddenly Decides to Hold Press Conference to Take Charge of Kavanaugh’s Defense

Politics • Views: 29,024

We have something to look forward to, or dread, depending on how you feel about Donald Trump deciding to step forward and take charge of defending Brett Kavanaugh against sexual abuse charges.

Because who better to defend someone accused of assaulting women than an old white narcissist who has openly boasted about sexually assaulting women, on a scale that makes Kavanaugh look like a piker?

Or maybe he’ll surprise everyone and suddenly withdraw Kavanaugh’s nomination… wait, what am I saying? This is Donald Trump here.

Either way it’s going to be nasty. Trump doesn’t do well with direct questions from the press — and this is only his fourth press conference since taking office — so I expect him to cut it short as soon as he stops blathering.

The worst possible news Kav could have heard today.

“The POTUS is here to take charge of your defense.”

Pass the popcorn

Trump taking charge of defending Kavanaugh should once again remind everyone that:

1) Trump has been accused by what 18, 19 women of sex harassment/abuse?
2) Trump admits to being a self-professed sex predator who grabbed women by the genitals because he could get away with it.
3) Trump refuses to release his tax records.
4) Trump lies nonstop about everything he says and does.
5) Trump wants Kavanaugh because of Kavanaugh’s positions on executive power when a GOPer is in office.

Trump sees a bit of himself when he looks at Kavanaugh. Both privileged elite white guys who were born on 3d base and who treat women as disposable objects.

Hyde-Smith is running neck-and-neck with Mike Espy in the special election (there’s another Republican in the field, if nobody gets 50%+1, then it goes to a runoff). Both are around 27%, another 27% are undecided, and about 20% or so are voting for the GOP spoiler. I doubt we get so lucky as to see Democrats win Senate seats in both Alabama and Mississippi, but it would be amazing.

24
wrenchwench  Sep 26, 2018 • 12:59:23pm

The primary thing I hope some men and women can learn from all this is the inescapable interconnectedness between sexual abuse of women and the criminalization of abortion. The stigma of both attach to women, who cannot experience either without involvement of men (with rare exceptions, probably). Everyone suffers from the politicization of sex, even if they don’t want any, and/or they aren’t having any. And the politicization of sex is what making abortion illegal is all about.

25
dangerman  Sep 26, 2018 • 12:59:24pm

this doesnt say it all. the bold part says a lot.

A new NPR/PBS/Marist poll finds that if Christine Blasey Ford’s allegations of sexual assault against Brett Kavanaugh are true, 59% of Americans said they believe the Senate Judiciary Committee should not confirm his nomination to the Supreme Court.

The poll also revealed that 29% of those surveyed would support Kavanaugh’s nomination regardless of the legitimacy of Ford’s allegations, including 54% of Republicans.

Maybe that simple solution is just too simple for these great legal minds to grasp.

Special election is on election day, jungle primary, nobody gets to a majority, runoff three weeks later. The winner would serve the remainder of Cochran’s term, which expires in 2020.

So we’ve got someone that put her name on an affidavit, with penalty of perjury, alleging sexual assault and rape. But an unsworn “firm, specific, complete denial” (or a statement in front of a body that can’t prosecute for perjury) will cover it for Kavanaugh? Oh. Ok.

re: #84 Dave In Austin

Julie is the candidate for my district. Any Retweet for her video would be awesome.

She’s got my vote retweet.

There’s an assumption they have someone whose not as rapey.

Of course they do; Amy Coney Barrett.

She’s got other issues; but they’re all to do with well-known, on the record stuff. No secrets, no surprises, no hiding of documents.

Also, she’s 46 and looks to be in good shape — she’s probably got another 50 years in her.

re: #88 Belafon

If failure was a problem for them, they would have never been able to milk repealing Roe for so long.

The thing is, this is really the first time (since at least the Reagan Administration*) to actually swing the majority on the issue. We’ve had a surprising long run of Republican presidents replacing conservative justices and Democratic presidents replacing liberal justices.

re: #89 KGxvi

I think it’s a minimum of 3 and a max of 10. Meaning the earliest he’d be able to get out because of good behavior and/or health and/or no longer being a threat to the community would be 3 years. But none of the reporting has been very clear on that.

Actually with good behavior he would be eligible for parole in something like 28-29 months.

These are the ones Christ told us to help. Not the rich. Not the healthy. Not the safe ones. And piss on the GOP fuckers that say otherwise.

re: #81 MsJ

What is this 3-10 years stuff? Is it 3? 5? 10?

I’m confused.

It means after 3 years he can apply for parole; if he’s turned down he can apply again later. But in any case, if he never gets paroled, it’s a max of 10 years.
