Here’s one of my favorite songs from Jacob Collier’s new album with the Metropole Orkest, a wildly eclectic cover of a classic Police song.

The Police’s 1981 hit, “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, reimagined by Jacob Collier with the Metropole Orkest conducted by Jules Buckley [OFFICIAL AUDIO] from Djesse (Vol. 1)

Heading out with my 14yo to see Lindsey Buckingham with J.S. Ondara opening. My son kind of expressed interest but my wife thought he was dying to go—turns out we’re both pretty much “meh,” but I have the tickets. I hope it’s good. This was supposed to be a big present. I have to learn to ask a bit more carefully when my wife interprets my kids’ desires. TTFN.

From the last thread:

re: #1 Belafon

I need to ask for ideas on how to solve a problem. My son is taken Business Basics for one if his first classes in college. He’s got a really high grade in the class (as in, he’s currently got over a 4.0 because he’s been getting the extra credit), and has done all of the assignments, but she won’t let him turn in his final project - which counts for 30% of his grade) because she says he didn’t turn in all of the assessments, a particular set of online quizzes he had to take. Back in September, on of the assessments did not have a submit button, so when he finished, he assumed she received the grade. She didn’t.

He’s tried talking to her, including sending screenshots of the completed assessment, but she keeps saying that his failure to follow up is not her problem and he should just take the hit.

What can we do? She’s the assistant dean of undergraduate studies in the department, and we all pretty much think she just doesn’t like having to teach.

There are two more options: the students affairs dean, and the student ombudsperson (I think that’s how it’s translated). At least the ones here can also take the case.

Pitfalls of ruling by authoritarianism and threats… No-one dares contradict the leadership strata, not even when it’s necessary… It’s one of the reasons why they are all doomed in the end.

Bob Dole is a hateful person who believes hateful things and tried to shove those hateful beliefs on all America.

This country is fortunate to not have elected him as POTUS and the only reason people act like they like him now is because he is old. Screw him then and screw him now.

The lightbulb went out outside my front door so I bought a pole to change it out. Got the old lightbulb out, but when I tried to install the new lightbulb, it got stuck, didn’t turn on, and when I tried to unscrew it and pull it out, I pulled the entire light fixture from the outside ceiling. It’s too dark for me to see anything and I’m going to have to pull out the extension ladder and try to fix it in the morning. Hoping I don’t have to replace the guts or doing any rewiring. Fuck!

I had the glass break off of the light bulb base on one of my outside lights. The threads are still embedded in the fixture. I’ll have to take the window glass out of the fixture and see if I can get at the base with a pair of pliers or something.

Yikes! That sounds worse than what I’m going to have to deal with. My problem is that is it at least one story high and the extension ladder is going to have to rest on the wall while the fixture is not against the wall, but in the middle. Might try some scaffolding thing with my taller ladder and the extension ladder. There is another burnt out bulb in the front, but that is 2 stories high. I haven’t seen anyone replace that one. I’m going to attempt it tomorrow as well. Good thing I’m not totally frozen at heights.

my shocked face

President Donald Trump racked up an estimated $17 million tab by flying on Air Force One to more than 40 political rallies in the lead up to the 2018 midterm elections, a Quartz investigation found.

Because Trump had been using the plane to stump for Republican candidates, the GOP or his re-election campaign is supposed to reimburse taxpayers for a portion of the cost. However, Quartz reports that the Trump campaign has thus far only paid the Treasury $112,667.90 in March and April for air travel expenses, or approximately 0.7 percent of the total cost. It is unclear when, or if, the campaign might issue additional payments.

Trump was highly critical of President Barack Obama during the 2016 presidential election for flying with then-candidate Hillary Clinton to a rally in North Carolina. The Clinton campaign reimbursed the government for $37,000.

The early Church encouraged generosity, but it wasn’t enforced. Rich people weren’t required to give their wealth to the church, some of them just did it anyway (like they do today). However, unlike today, the early Church used those funds to take care of the poor and needy among them. While some individual churches may do that - and I’d like to give a shout-out to my church, which is very explicit about giving cash to people who need it for bills or food, and provides a temporary home for the homeless inside one of our campuses - the Church as a collective thinks that is beneath them.

TTFN.

Coming in here after the fact. In my humble experience taking a kid of any age to a good band is one very good thing to do for anyone of any age.
And I think when you come back from this you MAY agree.

I’m no good with heights or electricity. Careful on that ladder!

I could ask my ex-husband, who was a climber and an electrician, but he’s not ever interested in helping me with anything. Doesn’t matter if the mother of his children kills herself. In 22 years of marriage, he never taught me how to wire anything. I learned it this past year to take care of wiring issues with lights that were installed in this rental home that were popping and sizzling when light switches were turned on. I’m pretty proud of myself because I’ve always liked to be self-sufficient.

What helped me was actually doing rock climbing and also rappelling from cliffs and into caves (and it was really ugly when I did the rappelling the first few times. I stood on the edge forever and cried and yelled at myself until I could take that first step). Unfortunately, I won’t be tied off, but this is in an entryway and enclosed places feel better on a ladder than when the ladder is against the outside wall of a house. I had to use the extension ladder outside when I first moved here to reach the vent for the dryer because I thought it might be clogged as the dryer was running really hot. That felt a little dicey, but I did it.

For my weekly rant about “flippers” and the industry of “flipping” TV shows…

So I’ve watches several episodes of the HGTV show Desert Flippers and of course the show is all about sending people to Lowe’s, Wayfair, (and the even more evil Home Depot) etc. But in the need to do that the show sells the beauty of Palm Springs (often outside the city limits it appears)… and to sell the mystique of the desert to the parts of the country where it rains the producers constantly put up images of palms.

Now, the female show star keeps calling the palms “trees” (which as I always emphasize, palms are not trees)… but that is not the real issue here.

In almost all cases, the palms are untrimmed, unkempt, and in desperate need of attention.

Apparently no one around the area properly takes care of their palms.

Anyway, untrimmed palms are a health menace - rats nests, other vermine, and eventually the leaves when dried (and quite sharp) fall and can cause damage. At least around here, palms are trimmed regularly to avoid these issues.

Yet the show producers keep pimping the joy of desert living by showing the unkept rats nests.

And the show stars, flipping “experts”, appear unaware of the problems with palms, as they are unaware that the ubiquitous fan palms are weeds and an intrusive imported species.

Around here, flippers are always cutting down real trees and removing real bushes, to put in palms. I find it all quite offensive. It’s an appeal to laziness, on the part of flippers, as they can tell their prospective customers (who are overpaying) that the yard is “maintenance free.”

HGTV shows tend to hire attractive, very affable stars, and for their flipping shows attractive couples, because what HGTV sells primarily is a fantasy life of the perfect couple.

Except for a few rare producers (such as Alton Brown), the shows are not intended to be educational but escapist, and as I keep repeating, designed to program the viewer with a few keep talking points to take into your local big box home store.

The deeper issue here is the constant reification of “The American Dream”, which factors into many of our society’s problems that come up in politics.

Reminds me of the movie Downfall where none of Hitler’s generals could gather the courage to push back against him and his irrational orders.

the best translation of that famous scene in the bunker is when Hitler discovers that Steve Spurrier is NOT going to coach the Gamecocks, after having retired inopportunely halfway through the season.

Palms should only be trimmed by those properly equipped and trained.

Same for large trees.

My rule of thumb is if the plant is more than twice your height then you need to call an arborist.

I agree. I had African Sumac trees at my old house that were basically bushes when they were first planted. I don’t know anything about trimming trees, but I figured it out and by the time we left, they were big wonderful trees with a great canopy. They had gotten to the point, though, where they were tall enough that even with a ladder, I couldn’t reach the highest branches to trim them properly.

I continue to believe wholeheartedly that Donny will not finish his term in office. When Mueller finally puts the cap on his investigation, even if Congressional Dems choose not to impeach him, he’s gonna know federal indictments await his final exit past the White House. And everybody from the IRS to NYC is gonna want a pound of flesh before it’s all over. Even if by some miracle he avoids jail time, he’s going to watch everything he owns stripped away from him to pay off debt-collectors. He’s gonna end up leaving so much debt to Ivana’s spawn upon his death that they’ll be paying it off for decades.

So if he’s not already considering making a deal to step down in exchange for some of those charges going away, he’s certainly going to find himself doing so when the GOP leadership make it clear that when it comes to keeping Congress or seeing him out on his ass, they will not hesitate to usher out the front door themselves.

(Bolding mine.)

Which is why they are boring. Also why I don’t miss cable. I like escapism as much as the next person (British mysteries, anyone?) but when it comes to cooking, home improvement, etc. I want to learn something.

A widespread problem, and not just with the flipping shows pushing viewers into big-box stores but also with architecture/new-home shows like Grand Designs, is that fads are being foisted upon the entire concept of residing in home that are antithetical to real human comfort and function.

Here is the cause: the design issues are only being made on looks.

Function, feel, sound, smell… are ignored.

The only thing that matters is the visual, the image.

This is a direct result of television being the mechanism by which to judge these things.

Example - show after show is about installing all hard surfaces. Every ceiling, floor, and wall are tile (or marble for those who can afford it), or vinyl imitation wood, etc.

The rooms become huge echo chambers, especially with the “open concept” (one of the buzzwords these shows train their viewers to use when they go shopping) designs.

You can tell by just listening to the shows. Close your eyes and turn up the volume. All too often you will hear echos… and even sometimes the speakers are intentionally using a soft voice (probably directed by a sound person in production.)

Three walls of glass, marble floors, hard ceilings… and your room is unlivable for more than one person.

This is a trend not just in residences but in public spaces. Last week I linked to an article by Kate (of mcmansionhell.com) about how public spaces such as restaurants are becoming so loud that one can’t hear the person next to you.

Anyway, the house remodels are based on a facile approach to what a residence ought to be.

Because my family lives so far away from here - the wild north country and the fishbowl are separated by 650 miles as the fish drives - we take every other holiday. This year, my sister and I were home for Thanksgiving Day, and will be away for Christmas. (She will get to see my folks on another day near Christmastime, because they still live back in fish country, whereas I will be with Mrs. Fish’s family for Christmas.) Mrs. Fish’s family is complete and total chaos on the best of days and literally destructive on the worst, but she volunteered our home because Mrs. Fish’s parents’ home is a wreck right now due to the last sibling finally moving out. It’s a mixed bag, but in the end, it’s family and what else can you do?

re: #183 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

Mrs. Fish is having the family Christmas at our house this year. I’m not quite certain what possessed her to do this; she has 6 elder siblings, and between them they have something like 24 children. I’m contemplating just hiding in the basement with my cat and a bottle of Everclear.

I’d love to have a huge family Christmas. The only way that will happen is if I go to the San Diego area and join my uncle and his now huge family since he married into a Mexican family. They always have at least 30 people for holidays. It’s a lot of fun! This year, I’m by myself for Christmas, then have my girls the following week. My dad and bonus mom will be flying in on New Year’s Day so the next day we will have a Christmas with the kids and then they are going home the following day.

My mother and father are the most important people in my life, yes.

Especially my mother. Out of all the people in the world. Her and I are so like each other, it’s rather weird. If our personality traits were a Venn Diagram it would be a circle. Genetics are something else.

Not to mention the joys of “green” remodels. Ya know, it’s way greener to slap a coat of paint onto your existing cabinetry than it is to buy sustainably raised bamboo or some such. So, we get by with our dated floorplan and 55 year old kitchen cabinets. It’s cheaper too. ;)

I hear you. I’ve written off the one cousin who still lives in town and we were always close. She’s lost her ever-loving mind, however, and I’m done. My little sister and I were never close, but she’s finally getting her act together and using her head and things have started really changing for us this year. I’m happy about that.

I stick to the morning shows on the food networks, which all tend to be the how-to-cook ones. I watch Guy so that if I’m ever in a town I know where to go eat. I don’t care for the bake-offs at all.

In my extended family, there is only one “youngest sister” in any family. And you are right.

My youngest sister has a twin, my second youngest sister. It’s almost a tough decision which is worse, they work together. They think 5 minutes is an age difference. They had a problem when my dad married a woman 10 years younger than mom, and when I hooked up with a guy 19 years my senior (30 years later, he married me, 4 years ago).

My mother, father, all my sisters, nieces and nephew, are all getting together in Summit County, CO at my eldest sister’s condo to exchange gifts for Christmas/Greed Fest (my mom calls it Greed Fest and Clyde The Christmas Camel stands in for Santa Claus) tomorrow. I’ll once again be the only one absent, I’ll be working at the ski area.

I’m glad you have work (and snow to ski on), but sorry you won’t be able to be with your family.

I have not been with my family over the holidays for a couple decades … that said, my wife and my sister are of the opinion my step-father isn’t going to make it that long.

We’re planning a trip to Chicago in January, but we might have to move that up.

Norm Abram is why when I look at cabinetry and furniture in stores I shake my head in disgust

Coming in here after the fact. In my humble experience taking a kid of any age to a good band is one very good thing to do for anyone of any age.
And I think when you come back from this you MAY agree.
If not, try another band.

We had such a great time. Yeah, the mix was off for the first few songs, but it got fixed and sounded great. First, it was great to see this crowd of mostly baby boomers bouncing in their seats to the music. But mostly it was about Lindsey Buckingham’s guitar virtuosity and songwriting prowess. His voice is a touch roached, but he hit it when it mattered. The words “Fleetwood Mac” were never uttered, but he did talk a bit about looking forward and alluded to undergoing life changes that left him humbled and blessed. For me, “Big Love” was transcendent. Precision fingerpicking in a punk style. “Tusk” was great, too. You don’t need the UCLA band, it turns out. So glad we went, and my son had a great time as well.

As a note: my 14yo is a huge Dylan fan (didn’t get that from me), Talking Heads, and lately it’s always The Clash in the car. None of those are or were my go-to bands. But I write this to say that he probably had his own approach to tonight’s concert.

I’m still going to use Twitter, because it is a good thing and I read, see, hear good things all the time on the website. Still, @jack is a fucking slimy cock-knocker who clearly has *no idea* what happens on the thing he invented and still gets to enjoy his billions in an incredibly selfish shitty fashion.

He knows what happens on Twitter. With the millions of people who are harassed, Nazis, white supremacists, people who threaten rape or other violence, and all the complaints he gets about it (then bans those who complain), he not only knows, he is complicit.

The only way Twitter will be improved is for good people to leave it (as Leslie Jones did), or Dorsey to change. Since he is a Libertarian and supports fascism, the second won’t happen.

Jack has become the IT version of Gwyneth Paltrow.

And if sitting cross-legged for 35 minutes creates that much pain, Jack, you might consider daily yoga practice to limber up some.

Unless your idea of pain is like a 2 on the nurses’ 10-point scale.
