Atlantic Senior Editor Yoni Appelbaum: It’s Time to Impeach Trump [VIDEO]

Impeachment is a powerful tool. The time to wield it is now, argues the Atlantic senior editor Yoni Appelbaum. In the latest Atlantic Argument, Appelbaum invokes Andrew Johnson’s impeachment in 1868 to make the case for democratically removing President Donald Trump from office. Appelbaum underscores that this measure is not meant to resolve a policy dispute; rather, it is an attempt to rectify the problem of Trump’s inability to discharge the basic duties of his office.

“The president is unfit for the office he holds,” Appelbaum says in the video. “Congress needs to act now and open an impeachment inquiry.”

Absolutely. And to hell with the idea of waiting on the Mueller report. Trump’s documented abuses of authority to date suffice for impeachment and removal from office, even in the extraordinarily unlikely event of the man having committed no crimes.

tbf, I have no problem with the article or the idea behind it, what I kind of have an issue with is that the Dems must do this immediately or else they’re just as bad as the GOP for ignoring the problem without any nod or recognition of just how an immediate response of impeachment will be played out in the media (as in I fully expect the media to equate this as being personal about Trump versus all of the illegal shit he’s already pulled). I fully believe that the Dems will indeed offer articles of impeachment (its not as if they’re lacking any ammunition) but I also understand that they want the government to be back in business first because as much as we need to have Trump impeached (as well as members of his administration), Congress also needs to have the government up and running for the good of the country, and that needs to be addressed first (imho).

I posted it as a joke that she may damn well be “undecided” until a CR vote gets put up by Mitch… and maybe that IS the case. Taking one “for the team” and allowing Barr to be confirmed while saving Mitch’s hide, and she can be “the one that ended the shutdown.” Total political maneuvering that would be in line with her shameless and pathetic grandstanding for Rapey McBeerdrinker, and giving Mitch the out he sorely needs.

I read it last night. I agree with much of except…..

…except for the bit where he suggests impeachment will cripple Trump’s ability to seize the daily narrative.

Reported again today that Trump and Bolton et al are requesting strike package details and battle plans for war with Iran.

If and when he is impeached, it will be the most dangerous moment for America since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Put nothing past Trump. Nothing. We are all essentially hostages, and we are all expendable in his estimation if he thinks that a war might save his skin.

I started watching it with Mrs. FBW one night. She couldn’t get into it, or fell asleep. Told me to go ahead but she wasn’t interested.

So, I watched two seasons of it, and was working on the 3rd when, one evening, she sat down and watched a few minutes and got interested. I said, “You really should watch from the beginning, you know.”

Started off with Episode 1 again, the one she’d started watching and thought she wouldn’t like? End of the episode, I look at her and say, “Shall I fire up the next one?”

I was in 1-12 from 1960 to 1972 and we had history, civics and government. College-prep Catholic education.

In had to pass two Constitution tests to graduate; one in 7th grade to graduate grade school and another in the 11th grade to graduate high school. Fail either and, while you have a year before actual graduation ceremonies to pass either (Grayson was 8th and 12 the grades), pass you must or no graduation for you.

It really depends what you look for. I guess I like to be able to see the character before they go villain. Some of these while definitely good choices aren’t what I typically like since they’re already villains by the time we meet them and that’s fine but for a great story, I love something where you see them at their best and worst. The Harvey Dent line, either die the hero or live to become the villain I guess is the gist of what I’m getting at. Michael Corleone fascinates me because when we first meet him, he’s telling Kay how he’s different from his brothers and father. There’s some neat symbolism in the wedding scene in that movie where the other brothers and their father are wearing more black and white and Kay and Michael to a smaller extent are wearing more bright colors. That wasn’t an accident.

This movie wasn’t very popular because it was seen by some as being too outrageous a story. Problem with that criticism is the movie was based on facts. It is a movie that is full of bad characters being bad. But the acting was excellent.

I wish I could find the scene when Walken hears on the radio in his truck that his family gang is being indicted. He loses it in a way that only Walken can.

tbf, I have no problem with the article or the idea behind it, what I kind of have an issue with is that the Dems must do this immediately or else they’re just as bad as the GOP for ignoring the problem without any nod or recognition of just how an immediate response of impeachment will be played out in the media (as in I fully expect the media to equate this as being personal about Trump versus all of the illegal shit he’s already pulled). I fully believe that the Dems will indeed offer articles of impeachment (its not as if they’re lacking any ammunition) but I also understand that they want the government to be back in business first because as much as we need to have Trump impeached (as well as members of his administration), Congress also needs to have the government up and running for the good of the country, and that needs to be addressed first (imho).

The Democratic Party has been harping on the GOP abandoning its constitutional duties ever since Mitch McConnell held up Merrick Garland’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

The Constitution is clear: If the evidence warrants it, an impeachment hearing is the constitutional duty of the House. Set up the special committee and review the evidence. (That committee could also return a “no bill” on impeachment.)

If we don’t uphold all the parts of the Constitution, how are we any cleaner than the GOP and Trump’s emoluments violations (themselves enough to remove him)?

I usually get a good feeling about a movie if I know Kathy’s in it. I was in 1-12 from 1960 to 1972 and we had history, civics and government. College-prep Catholic education.

I went to public schools (segregated public schools in Maryland for K-2, public schools in Michigan 2-12, except public school in Brazil in 11, 1965-1978). All along the way age-appropriate education about civic and government was offered, up until Government class in grade 12. (I had to take American History as a senior - normally required as a junior in Michigan -because they don’t offer American History in Brazil.)

All along the way age-appropriate education about civic and government was offered, up until Government class in grade 12. (I had to take American History as a senior - normally required as a junior in Michigan -because they don’t offer American History in Brazil.)

Government which most kids take is pretty much Civics but more advanced.

Speaking of Caan. I used to think his portrayal of Sonny was probably the weak link of the four Corleone brothers but Sonny now that I look at him is a really fascinating character. Yes, he’s a hot head but he loves his family. Yes, he cheats on his wife and even fathers a kid out of wedlock but he does love his family and it gets him killed in the end. There is no weak link is the lesson I learned I guess since Pacino, Duvall, Caan, and the late and missed John Cazale were all great.

Sounds interesting. It also would be tough because I’m sure readers would prefer people like Atta be dehumanized but that doesn’t make for a compelling story. Knowing little about him and the other hijackers, I can’t really comment but I would certainly read such a novel. I would find it more interesting than a novel say about a NYPD member, US government official, or passenger or airline employee or Pentagon or WTC employee on that day.

We saw it in my 12th grade government class and then i saw it again when I got my paralegal certificate. It’s stayed with me. Another great Fonda legal movie was his TV movie Gideon’s Trumpet. Not as great as 12 Angry Men but this one was based on a true story and focused on another important principle.

I used to have a whole bunch of them. Their pen was a wading pool (that allowed them to jump out and run around the room they were in, though only two of them did). My roommates’ cat would jump into the wading pool to snuggle up to guinea pigs for warmth.

I entered a “cute pet” picture contest once in Liberty, Mo. at the feed store of one of my guinea pigs (came in as second place). Any time I was in front of my computer I would set a cup of coffee on the floor (I don’t put liquids around my computers).

She would jump out of the wading pool and run across the room, climb up the side of the cup, and start lapping black coffee.

I last had guinea pigs in Oklahoma, where Felix Strangelet Randomkitty would also play with the pigs and cuddle up to them.

I haven’t had a guinea pig in several years, but would like to have them.

he has another great turn in The Oxbow Incident, he could play the everyman even better than Hanks did, roles like Fail Safe and Advise and Consent and The Wrong Man, he had a great feel for movies with a conscience.

Yeah Hanks is often compared to Jimmy Stewart but I think Fonda is a better comparison. Not that I don’t like Jimmy Stewart and I think the comparison is a good one but I think Fonda:Hanks works better and their politics are similar too. Jimmy Stewart, great actor, a patriot , and a great guy from what I know but right wing unfortunately. I do respect him more than John Wayne that said.

One of my favorite movies. Its genius IMO is in how limited it is but Lumet told a great story and I believe this was his debut.

It’s basically a stage play in the way it was originally composed and then did actually become a good play. That is why with great acting it holds up.

Like Death of a Salesman, the TV version with Dustin Hoffman.

Limited acting in a tight timeline format makes for some great film.

Right, I didn’t know it had been a play to much later but that does explain it. I loved Fonda’s character but my two favorite characters were probably the old man and the immigrant. Also a special nod to the juror who like me was an Orioles fan much to Jack Warden’s juror’s condescending dismissal. They were all great though. I’d like to see the remake with George C. Scott.

that juror was played by Jack Klugman (Quincy!) but with guys like Simon Oakland, Martin Balsam, John Fielder, Ed Begley, Jack Weston and Robert Webber (I mean who do you think Mad Men used as the model for their Ad Man?) and with everyone getting lines and able to BE those people, its simply friggen awesome.

The brilliant thing about jaws was the shark doesn’t appear on screen till over an hour in and is on screen totally I think less than 2 minutes

Right out of the Hitchcock suspense movie manual. The best kind.

Government which most kids take is pretty much Civics but more advanced.

I don’t know if that was true or not in my school in 1978. We did have a bunch of roundtable discussions on things.

My teacher was a RWNJ and I was already on the rose-toting left.

At the end of the year, he noted to the class I was the first person he’d ever given an “A” grade to. (I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I was flummoxed at the time.)

It was easily the best movie I saw last year. Just an amazing movie that was not a superhero movie but a comic book as a movie yet without the slightest bit of camp.

I got to talk to Frank Gorshin about why he didn’t come back to play the Riddler in the second season and he said he was paid less than Burgess Meredith and Caesar Romero. Dozier begged him to come back in the third season and Gorshin said he would only do one episode and he had to be paid double what Meredith and Romero got.

He said it was a pain in the CENSORED doing the original movie because Voyage to The Bottom Of The Sea was in production at the same time and they only got to use the redressed Seaview set when the Voyage crew finished up.

Julie Newmar came to the Razzies. I asked her about Batman and she said she and Gorshin were paid less that Burgess and Caesar. She said she made a lot more money shooting Mackenna’s Gold.

Malachi Throne was False Face. When he was paid only $2,500 and he found out Myrna Fahey got $25,000 he was so pissed off he demanded that his name be taken off of the credits so that’s why he was billed as “?”. He loved the controversy that caused because people couldn’t figure out he was False Face. Even fellow actors couldn’t figure out who False Face was and he was right there working with them. He got a big kick when folks guessed False Face was…FRANK SINATRA!!!!!

I loved Time Tunnel. We got a color TV set 2 days before, the first color show I saw on it was the premiere of Star Trek, thought it was cool, but the next night premiered The Green Hornet and Time Tunnel. Man I thought the Tunnel was cool!

And Irwin Allen almost cast Barbara Bain instead of Lee…

I have a silly habit of hypothetically casting people in my family lol. I always saw my father’s father as Fonda. My mom’s father could be Dan Lauria, Jack Arnold from The Wonder Years but he also could be a more kind hearted Clint Eastwood lol.

I cast Abe Vigoda and Nancy Walker as my mom’s parents.

I’ve started a new book and it’s the most challenging project I’ve taken on so far. It’s a historical fiction novel that follows a number of characters, including Mohammed Atta, on September 10th, 2001.

It’s still in the early stages but I was hoping one or
more of you might be willing to give me some feedback on it when the time comes. Anyone interested?

Cannot claim any expertise on the subject matter, but could provide basic beta on characters, coherence, dialogue etc. Sounds interesting!
