Official Lyrics:

For Real
Oh brother, look what we’ve become
Oh brother, could we be so dumb
They set us up like dominos

I didn’t do it for no magazine
Didn’t do it for no video
Never did it for no CEO

But I did it for real
Woulda done it for free
I did it for me
Cause it was all that rang true
I did it for real
And I did it for you

Mighta done it for my sanity
Maybe done it for my vanity
Could be I did it for my big ego

But I did it for real
Woulda done it for free
Yeah I did it for me
Cause it was all that rang true
I did it for real
And I did it for you (true)

Oh brother, look what we’ve become
Oh brother, I’ve been overrun
Only did it for the way it made me feel

Yeah I did it for real
Woulda done it for free
Yeah I did it for me
Cause it was all that rang true
I did it for real
And I did it for you

I keep wondering what the catch is. Because there is just no way in hell that conservatives caved on this without getting something totally evil in return. And yes I am cynical and untrusting. Wonder why?

I figured this was it. Did anyone hear what McCabe said on 60 Minutes?

Here’s a tidbit

“The president launched into several unrelated diatribes,” McCabe said. “One of those was commenting on the recent missile launches by the government of North Korea. And, essentially, the president said he did not believe that the North Koreans had the capability to hit us here with ballistic missiles in the United States. And he did not believe that because president Putin had told him they did not. President Putin had told him that the North Koreans don’t actually have those missiles.”

CBS co-host Scott Pelley seemed floored and asked what the intelligence experts told Trump.

“Intelligence officials in the briefing responded that that was not consistent with any of the intelligence our government possesses to which the president replied, ‘I don’t care. I believe Putin,’” he said.

New petition to sell Montana to Canada for $1 trillion to pay off US debt

A new change.org petition proposes selling Montana to Canada for $1 trillion to pay off the national debt.

“We have too much debt and Montana is useless,” the petition reads. As for getting Canada to go for the deal, “Just tell them it has beavers or something,”

It’s garnered 1,000 signers since its launch. Many are from Montana.

We in Montana have questions:

It isn’t nearly enough, for one thing. Still, you have to start somewhere. I wonder if Paraguay or Somalia might make an offer on Lubbock?

$1 trillion for Montana seems a tad overpriced - for a state with only $45 billion in annual economy, even given the value of the RE. Now if they threw in Washington, say ($476B) and Idaho ($65B) - just to keep it contiguous - for say, $2 trillion, you might get a deal you could get to pay out over a few years, and put a decent dent in the national debt. Okay, there would still be $20 T to go, but you have to start somewhere…

As Americans reject vaccines, health workers abroad risk death to deliver them

In early October, three cases of measles were confirmed in Antanarivo, the capital of Madagascar. The highly contagious virus quickly spread across the island nation; by the next month, thousands of cases had been confirmed. The crisis only grew from there.

Madagascar has poor health-care infrastructure and a low vaccination rate. But public health experts say its dangerous measles outbreak still offers a warning for anti-vaccination campaigners in the United States, where a smaller-scale flare-up has led to more than 100 confirmed cases since the beginning of the year. Conspiracy theories that vaccines are ineffective or can cause certain disabilities and medical conditions have led a number of American parents to resist vaccinating their children.

“Madagascar started with a few cases; now, we are almost close to 60,000 and the cases are still increasing,” said Richard Mihigo, coordinator for the World Health Organization’s immunization and vaccine development program at its regional office for Africa. “I think societies like the U.S. and western Europe should ring the bell and see … this is something that could also happen to them.”

February is Black History Month. The Legislature’s black caucus had proposed a resolution honoring a number of black leaders, including Kaepernick.

That didn’t go over well with the GOP. Republican leaders drafted their own resolution that didn’t include Kaepernick but did add Mandela Barnes, the state’s first black lieutenant governor, and Vel Phillips, the state’s first black secretary of state.

Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke, who is white, told reporters during a news conference Tuesday that Kaepernick was left off the list “for obvious reasons.” He later added that Kaepernick was a controversial figure.

One might suggest that a bunch of black people would be in a better position than a bunch of white people to answer the question “which black leaders are influential?”

But that’s just silly, right?

Male Democrats as well — the percentages of assholes, psychos, and well-meaning ignoramuses is better than the Republicans, but still.

The only people who have any moral authority to make decisions about contraception and abortion are:

1) people who have a uterus; and
2) people with advanced medical knowledge

Everybody else should just defer to members of those categories.

Male Democrats as well — the percentages of assholes, psychos, and well-meaning ignoramuses is better than the Republicans, but still.

The only people who have any moral authority to make decisions about contraception and abortion are:

1) people who have a uterus; and
2) people with advanced medical knowledge

Everybody else should just defer to members of those categories.

except that the GOP frames C&A as a social-moral issue, not a personal medical issue

This is good: Why Do Many British People Not Like Donald Trump?

A few things spring to mind.

Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.

For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace - all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.

So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing - not once, ever.

I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility - for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.

Umm…how about nope’?

Mr. Reg Mellor, the “king of ferret legging,” paced across his tiny Yorkshire miner’s cottage as he explained the rules of the English sport that he has come to dominate rather late in life. “Ay lad,” said the 72-year-old champion, “no jockstraps allowed. No underpants—nothin’ whatever. And it’s no good with tight trousers, mind ye. Little bah-stards have to be able to move around inside there from ankle to ankle.”

Some 11 years ago I first heard of the strange pastime called ferret legging, and for a decade since then I have sought a publication possessed of sufficient intelligence and vision to allow me to travel to northern England in search of the fabled players of the game.

Basically, the contest involves the tying of a competitor’s trousers at the ankles and the subsequent insertion into those trousers of a couple of peculiarly vicious fur-coated, footlong carnivores called ferrets. The brave contestant’s belt is then pulled tight, and he proceeds to stand there in front of the judges as long as he can, while animals with claws like hypodermic needles and teeth like number 16 carpet tacks try their damnedest to get out.

Wingnuttia goes off on Chris Wallace.

Conservative television viewers lashed out at Chris Wallace, the host of Fox News Sunday, after he subjected radio host Rush Limbaugh and White House aide Stephen Miller to tough interviews.

On his Sunday show, Wallace forced the two Republicans to face facts and cross-examination. He met Miller with statistics refuting the need for a border wall to combat drugs, and he suggested that Limbaugh was a hypocrite for supporting President Donald Drumpf’s use of executive power to thwart the will of Congress.

as part of their monday q&a a short and clear analysis of what is and is not bias in media reporting at electoral-vote.com this AM

- critical coverage does not inherently equate to bias

- If we did not point these things out when they happen (and, with him [Trump], they happen on a near-daily basis), that would not be a lack of bias, it would just be bias of a different sort.

There is a school of thought, often on display in newspapers, that every side of an issue deserves coverage… We find this way of thinking to be facile and rather dishonest. Regardless of what the postmodernists might say, not all points of view are equally valid and equally worthy of consideration.

Is there another, less damning, reading of this? Do we have a duty to search for one, particularly if we do not believe that alternate reading is correct (or even plausible)? If we do point out an alternate reading, particularly one we don’t believe in, are we actually being “fair” or are we merely trying to look “fair”? Is Trump entitled to any benefit of the doubt, after two years of choices that put him and his base first, and the rest of the country second?

The states include New Mexico, Oregon, Minnesota, New Jersey, Hawaii and Connecticut, according to CBS News. A spokesperson for Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser (D) told KDVR, a local news affiliate, that Colorado would also be joining the suit.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra (D) and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) have already announced plans to sue President Trump over the emergency declaration.

Florida student faces misdemeanor charges after refusing to stand for Pledge of Allegiance

An 11-year-old student in Florida is facing charges after refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and creating a disturbance in the classroom, police said.

The boy was arrested for causing a disruption and refusing repeated instructions from school staff and law enforcement, Polk County Public Schools spokesperson Kyle Kennedy said in a statement. He was not arrested for refusing to participate in the pledge - even though students have the right to do so by Florida law and district policy.

The sixth-grader from a Tampa suburb allegedly told his substitute teacher the flag is “racist” and the national anthem is offensive to black people, Bay News 9 reported, citing a statement the teacher gave the district.

In response, the teacher said she asked the student why not go to another place to live if it was “so bad here.” She said he answered, “They brought me here.”

The substitute, identified by district officials as Ana Alvarez, said, “Well, you can always go back because I came here from Cuba and the day I feel I’m not welcome here anymore, I would find another place to live.”

Alvarez said she called the office on Feb. 4 because she did not want to keep “dealing with him,” according to her statement. An officer and a school administrator tried to calm the student, the Lakeland Police Department said in a Sunday night press release. The administrator asked him to leave the classroom more than 20 times, police said, and the student allegedly made threats while being escorted to the office.

Police transported the Lawton Chiles Middle Academy student to the Juvenile Assessment Center and charged him with disrupting a school function and resisting an officer without violence, the Lakeland Police Department said.

re: #164 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

I’ve been reading up a lot on the Vichy French regime during World War II and on French collaboration in general. It is a complex and very interesting story. Needless to say, it is a primary focus of French historians and a source of bitter controversy to this day.
There seem to be some parallels to our situation today, except that the Vichyites were quite open about what they were doing.

It is an interesting subject: but - and I will admit that I am not quite au courant with the historiographical aspects of research into Vichy, but it has always been my impression that - at least until VERY recently (perhaps), French historians tended to very much shy away from any serious analysis of their country’s experience in WWII in favor of A) simply repeating the standard triumphalist Gaullist/Free French/Resistance line, or B) ignoring the wartime years (and especially Vichy) altogether.

Option B) is kind of understandable: but AFAICT, most of the recent work on the Vichy years has been done by non-French historians (though I could easily be wrong)

In other news, Netflix just cancelled Punisher and Jessica Jones. The latter show is what got my wife into watching the Marvel shows (just a bit), because it was such a finely layered look at the aftermath of trauma and gaslighting, as filtered through a sci-fi interface.

Season 1 of Jessica Jones is probably the best deconstruction of what powers really do to your psyche outside of all the Alan Moore “heroes are really pervs in spandex” stuff.

Mitch McConnell is useless, but I did call Rand Paul to express opposition to the national emergency, since its the sort of executive overreach he will sometimes oppose on principle, whereas McConnell has no principles.

‘i didn’t need to do it, it was just faster’

never has anyone been so ill suited to a job that has (had?) limitations via rules regarding powers, what you can and cant (shouldnt) do

people really voted for him, and he really walked in thinking in some perverse way, effective administrator, people will do what i say, etc.

now it’s morphed into more dictatorial authoritarianism, partially because so far, the ‘i can do what i want, screw the congress, the courts, the constitution” approach really hasnt worked out too well.

judges, regulation rollbacks and that stuff dont count. those powers are there. we just dont like how theyre being used

and dont get me started on ‘i only hire the best’ and ‘worlds greatest negotiator’ nonsense

Years ago, I saw a line outside my usual comic-book shop. It was unusually young, excited girls. WTF?

Turned out that the author of Umbrella Academy was there to sign his books. Which is a thing, yeah, and I’ve gotten books signed by Neil Gaiman & Millar (fanboi alert!) and had long conversations with others … but this seemed different.

TIL that Gerard Way is the lead singer of My Chemical Romance.

To begin with, the Gaullist/Free French and Resistance lines are two different things. DeGaulle’s Free French were often at odds with the internal resistance and this has carried over into post-war historiography. It is true that until fairly recently, eg the Chirac regime, the official line was to minimize or completely reject any connection between Vichy and the French Republic, both before and after.

Vichy Syndrome

Until Jacques Chirac’s presidency, the official point of view of the French government was that the Vichy regime was an illegal government distinct from the French Republic, established by traitors under foreign influence.
…….While the criminal behaviour of Vichy France was consistently acknowledged, this point of view denied any responsibility of the state of France, alleging that acts committed between 1940 and 1944 were unconstitutional acts devoid of legitimacy.

This has changed significantly in recent years, with the French government acknowledging responsibility to an increasing degree. This had been obvious for a long time though, with the great leniency shown many (but not all ) collaborationists once the initial wave of reprisals had subsided as one indicator.

Not bad, not great. A respectable performance, impressive as in any marathon finish is.
it was too darn hot. temps went from 67 to near 80 and my race plan went to hell around mile 21

for silver lining, the first time i ran this race i came in top 40% overall and division
second time 60% overall and division.

this time 25% overall and a division 6th place.

Tease.

In my 5k, there was a woman I figured (correctly) was in my category, who I knew about, but only met at the sign in, where we chatted a bit, and I started at the back of the ‘crowd’, she was ahead of me, and I found myself wanting to cross the finish ahead of her. Which I did. (Passed her three times.) Then I learned she had not run at all since last year’s 5k.

Have you ever paced yourself by someone else? (I kept it ‘reasonable’, walking when needed, tying my shoe when needed…). You seem a bit more self-contained. Does it come with experience?

France had a strong fascist movement at the time of the invasion. They also had a strong Communist movement. Many of the fascists didn’t mind Nazi help to kill Communist. Much of the French resistance were Communists and toward the end of the war they were betrayed to the Nazis so they weren’t around for the war’s end. Very similar thing happened in Greece. Fascists will sell out their country to keep political control.

- oh yes, from experience i ‘know’ my paces by feel.
- learning to run consistently without constant aids/feedback is important (imo)
- and yes, i pace off other people all the time; after i’ve found my pace and settled in. sometimes it’s just easier to follow along for a bit; usually the first 1/4 to 1/2 of a race. because lots of people run with phones and watches and use them to pace themselves so they are ‘reliable’ but only early on. (i use a plain watch with a 30 split button).
- i run a lot of negative split races - (ok i plan to). the second half faster than the first, so then pacing others wont work. instead i imagine i’m reeling them in one by one, like with a fishing pole, pass them and move on to the next one
