The number of people seeking asylum has climbed because of various crises across Latin America, but the US continues to throttle the number of people coming in and denying more asylum claims than they have in the past few years (although the number of those claims adjudicated is under 45,000 a year for the past decade). The percentage of those who have asylum relief granted remains 30% and below (and actually ticked up in 2018). This isn’t a crisis.
We’re talking about 45,000 people being processed for asylum claims. We have a nation of over 324 million. Those seeking asylum is .000138 of the US population.
That’s the threat here. That is what Trump and the GOP are so fearful of.

What gets me OA is how smug people are that MY ANCESTORS DID IT RIGHT. And we’ve seen through genealogical research that a lot of them like Tami Lahren’s ancestor and Trump’s grandfather did not in fact and John Kelly’s grandfather was still only speaking Italian. I actually recently started a biography of Honus Wagner- family lore is that my Dad’s mother’s father was friends with him but that’s another story. Anyhow Honus’s parents were German immigrants and the biographer talks about how Honus spoke German at home as his first language. I’m sure that was the case for my dad’s father’s father. I know that my mom’s maternal grandmother never learned English fully. A lot of people born here have it made because of the hard work others did before them and they shit on the newcomers. It breaks my heart so much when I see some of my cousins I’ve met through my research resort to the same Know-Nothing crap that was directed at our ancestors.

I’m trying to think if we ever truly had a Nativist as President. Wilson was a bigot too but I wouldn’t really characterize him as a nativist necessarily. Millard Fillmore later ran on the Know Nothing ticket but he didn’t use the power of the Presidency to deny Irish emigrants who were arriving in the thousands during his Presidency which coincided with the Famine and coincidentally enough for me is when my Nana’s maternal grandfather arrived from Ireland. We were never formed on the basis of ethnicity, religion, etc. We were formed based on the principles of the Declaration and Constitution and even though the Founders definitely were flawed and prejudiced, that was their intention when they set up the Republic. The colonies were full of white men, women, and children from many different backgrounds. I’ve found way, way distant relatives of mine who settled in Pennsylvania generations before Lexington and Concord.
And the current flap over “immigration reform” is just the latest recurrence of the old fundamental prejudices.

If I was king of determining primaries, I would have every state conduct them on the same day.
If we all actually went to vote on March 3, sure, that makes sense. But ballots will be coming in as those first four contests are going on. Makes more sense to wait it out and see what happens on Super Tuesday. Especially if as much as a quarter of voters cast ballots before the actual primary date.

There are a lot of national holidays where most people work - MLK’s Birthday, Washington’s Birthday (aka Presidents’ Day), Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day. I doubt most businesses are going to close for election day the way that they do for the “major” holidays (and hell, there are plenty of business that don’t even close for all of those).

Yeah the idea of two nominees in their 70’s who both are inflexible and rigid would be pretty bad. I am not thrilled with the prospect of Biden but I think Biden at least if he won would be a capable CinC and have a cabinet of qualified men and women. Bernie? I trust him almost as much as I do Trump to have a capable cabinet and team of advisers. Both Bernie and Trump operate under “You agree with my worldview, support me, and that’s how you get jobs”. I can see Bernie giving Nina Turner, Jeff Weaver, David Sirota, and others jobs that they would be unqualified for and that they would fail miserably at since they’re where they are because they are loyal to Bernie not because of any competency or knowledge in an issue. Biden wouldn’t do that IMO.

It is a good question, and I was thinking about that too… if the idea is to get everyone to the polls, a national holiday wouldn’t work since there are essential workers and retail businesses wouldn’t close because it’d be an economic loss for them.
It seems more about value signaling that it’s important to focus on the mechanics of voting.
I’d rather see them look into a single day primary vote nationwide. Eliminate caucuses. Allow mail-in ballots. Do more to make it easier to vote. Make voting in primaries and local elections all occur on the same day within a state, rather than allowing localities to pick and choose the dates, which makes it even more inconvenient and confusing.
