Paul Ryan fails upwards, as wingnuts often do.

news.nd.edu (Notre Dame University, an article where they have hired Paul Ryan to teach economics, history, and current political polarization in politics. He knows nothing of the first, little of the second, and is an architect of the third.)

The fact that the French have already pledged over $700,000,000 for repairs is staggering.

CBS in Denver is reporting that Sol Pais was in custody and died later. They still didn’t say how she died, but according to their reporting there was no shooting. The Clear Creek County coroner is going to conduct an investigation.

Rep. Peter King claims that the asylum process is broken, and that Trump’s fixing it.

He’s fixing it in the way that a crook hires a fixer to eliminate the problem.

The reality is that the asylum process is broken, but for an entirely different reason.

It’s broken because of a lack of judges available to process the claims in a timely manner. It’s the same problem with immigration generally. Visa overstays are the main reason people are here illegally - not because they crossed the border illegally. Failing to deal with all the paperwork and failing to timely process the claims is why there’s a mess.

The number of people seeking asylum has climbed because of various crises across Latin America, but the US continues to throttle the number of people coming in and denying more asylum claims than they have in the past few years (although the number of those claims adjudicated is under 45,000 a year for the past decade). The percentage of those who have asylum relief granted remains 30% and below (and actually ticked up in 2018). This isn’t a crisis.

We’re talking about 45,000 people being processed for asylum claims. We have a nation of over 324 million. Those seeking asylum is .000138 of the US population.

That’s the threat here. That is what Trump and the GOP are so fearful of.

UPDATE:
Source of asylum stats.

He’s back! Roy Moore prepares for Alabama Senate rematch after Republican lost in the wake of a string of claims of sexual misconduct with teenage girls

Roy’s buddy’s election eve admission that the two of them had actually visited a pedo-pay house in Vietnam remains one of the most amazing political moments of the last 20 years. Of course, he denied that they patronized the place but an MP officer who knew about such a place really needs a damn good explanation for why he didn’t shut it down. No such explanation was forthcoming.

Channel 4 in Denver (CBS) is saying she died in custody, quoting the police, but they did not say how she died.

I suspect the usual applies here: The news will frequently get things wrong or leave things out in an initial report.

I imagine the coroner or the police will release a statement as soon as they can.

Schumer recruits Amy McGrath to run against McConnell

The lede suggests that it’s more evidence of frayed relations between McConnell and Schumer.

Oh fucking really? McConnell eviscerates comity, holds open the empty Scalia seat preventing Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland from ever getting considered in committee, let alone a vote, and these media hacks continue to treat this like Schumer’s got to maintain some kind of good relations with the guy who has done more damage to the nation than anyone else over the past several years - including Trump and Ryan.

Good. Democrats should be targeting GOPers across the Senate who are up for reelection. To retake the Senate, they’ll have to do much more of this. Democrats have to act with the desperation needed in retaking the House last year.

The only way to begin undoing the damage the GOP has inflicted over the past two years is to take back the Senate, which continues to rubber stamp Trump picks for the judiciary and across the admin (where Trump bothers to actually nominate someone).

The thing is and this is why I laugh my ass off when white supremacists say “WE SHOULD UNITE OVER OUR COMMON WHITENESS” and it’s like uh your ideological ancestors were the same ones saying my family really wasn’t “white” because they were the wrong religion, ethnic background, and didn’t look “Western.” Not that I would join up with white supremacists anyhow since I think racial superiority is an absurd construct but it’s really funny when white supremacists want me to forget that they were the ones who told my mom’s grandparents that they didn’t belong in this country or my Dad’s that their Catholic faith meant that electing one of them would mean they would side with the Pope over secular means. Besides I subscribe to the notion that we’ve all been a newcomer at one point so why not welcome people who WANT to be here. Why not welcome people whose children will grow up loving this country and serving it in some way. When Germany invaded Czechoslovakia in the late 30’s and when the original “America Firsters” could have cared less about Hitler, my grandmother’s cousin enlisted in the Marines. He ended up planting the flag on Iwo Jima with five other guys including a Native American named Ira Hayes. Ira admired cousin Mike. Ira’s family had been in the US for generations in Arizona and Mike had arrived as a boy but they respected each other and didn’t see one as inferior to the other. That’s how it should be. America is not about a race or ethnicity. It’s about wanting to belong. And that’s something Nativists have never gotten about this country whether they were bellyaching about the Irish in the Famine years or today complaining about asylum seekers.

We are citizens of the world’s greatest republic, a nation of ideals, not blood and soil. We are blessed and are a blessing to humanity when we uphold and advance these ideals at home and in the world

He also went after Zerlina Maxwell for suggesting Sullivan read Malcom Nance’s book “The Plot to Destroy America.”

It’s the same from people like David Frum (who was also on the show) and Jennifer Rubin. The racism’s fine. They just wish Trump was using GOP-approved dogwhistles.

Nah, that was “Outbreak.” A bat was eating a piece of fruit that fell into a pigpen, eaten by a piglet that was killed and the chef with the bloody hands took a selfie with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Talk to the guys at the CDC about how plausible something like this is, and they just go quiet.

The fact that the French have already pledged over $700,000,000 for repairs is staggering.

I wish our Gov’t had as much love and respect for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands…

Apple has apparently pledged to help fund the rebuild. And apparently most of the money has come from French businesses and billionaires.

I suppose the difference with Notre Dame and our tragedies is that it’s much easier to concentrate around a single building/entity than it is for something wider like a city or island.

Sort of reminds me of how after 9/11 the Red Cross got more blood donations than ever before. It was a sense of doing something to help with the recovery effort for a lot of people… but there ended up not being many recipients.

My Slovak grandfather came over as an indentured servant of the Aultman-Taylor Machinery Company in Mansfield Ohio for his tool and die and machining skills.

How does that kind of thing fall into the thinking about immigrants and whether wanted or not?

What gets me OA is how smug people are that MY ANCESTORS DID IT RIGHT. And we’ve seen through genealogical research that a lot of them like Tami Lahren’s ancestor and Trump’s grandfather did not in fact and John Kelly’s grandfather was still only speaking Italian. I actually recently started a biography of Honus Wagner- family lore is that my Dad’s mother’s father was friends with him but that’s another story. Anyhow Honus’s parents were German immigrants and the biographer talks about how Honus spoke German at home as his first language. I’m sure that was the case for my dad’s father’s father. I know that my mom’s maternal grandmother never learned English fully. A lot of people born here have it made because of the hard work others did before them and they shit on the newcomers. It breaks my heart so much when I see some of my cousins I’ve met through my research resort to the same Know-Nothing crap that was directed at our ancestors.

Hi everybody, I just logged in so I don’t know if people have discussed this, but on the Maddow show last night I learned that in 1989 William Barr wrote a memo for the justice department attempting to justify allowing FBI officers to arrest Noriega in Panama. When the existence of the memo got leaked, Congress had Barr appear for questioning. He refused to provide them with a copy but told them he would “summarize the main conclusions”. They later got hold of the memo and discovered that he had materially misrepresented the contents and meaning of the memo———-the exact thing he appears to be doing again right now!

My question is, why was he not disbarred for lying to Congress, or Hell, why was he not prosecuted for that felony? Why did the Senate confirm as AG a man known for lying to Congress?

I’m trying to think if we ever truly had a Nativist as President. Wilson was a bigot too but I wouldn’t really characterize him as a nativist necessarily. Millard Fillmore later ran on the Know Nothing ticket but he didn’t use the power of the Presidency to deny Irish emigrants who were arriving in the thousands during his Presidency which coincided with the Famine and coincidentally enough for me is when my Nana’s maternal grandfather arrived from Ireland. On the other side. You had Lincoln who spoke I think as well about the ugliness of nativism as he did about the evils of slavery. And you had President Ford who welcomed people fleeing Vietnam in the aftermath of the Vietnam War which IMO was President Ford’s finest hour as President.

And it’s been my experience that such an idea is difficult for modern Czechs to understand. After all, their nation was formed in the wake of the First World War and also as a result of the National Awakening in the previous century, which saw the birth of modern Czech nationalism.

Depending on how many candidates are alive for Super Tuesday… there is an outside chance for a brokered convention.

There’s the four early contests (IA, NH, NV, and SC) then there’s Super Tuesday which includes California, Texas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Virginia as the big states on March 3. Early/absentee voting in California is going to start around February 3, which happens to be the same day as the Iowa caucuses.

With that wrinkle of early voting happening when the first four contests are going on, we might not see the traditional field narrowing until after Super Tuesday.

In other words: shit could get real weird, man.

So, you remember that USCG officer who was arrested with a huge cache of firearms and a hit list of prominent Democrats and journalists?

Well, his lawyer is seeking his release on bail because prosecutors haven’t charged him with terrorism or anything apparently related to the hit list.

Yikes! I could take over whole third world countries with that stash (and a skilled gang to work them). The RWNJs have a habit of accumulating multiple weapons, even though they can just use one at a time. Collector interest is one thing, as are different hunting guns for different game, but that is not what is going on when someone accumulates an arsenal of current, functional military and police style weapons.

I really hope it doesn’t come to that. I hope by this time next spring we have an idea who the nom will be and unite around him/her. I love the Berners double standard tho. It’s okdy for Bernie to win with 30% of the vote but somehow Clinton “stole” it from him even though she got a higher percentage of the popular vote than Obama did in the 2008 primaries. Bernie busters are very undemocratic when Bernie is concerned.

You’re right in principle, of course; except in practice, American attitudes towards immigration have always been - in one degree or another - subject to the minor modification I’ve added below:

Indeed. We were never formed on the basis of ethnicity, religion, etc. We were formed based on the principles of the Declaration and Constitution and even though the Founders definitely were flawed and prejudiced, that was their intention when they set up the Republic. The colonies were full of white men, women, and children from many different backgrounds. I’ve found way, way distant relatives of mine who settled in Pennsylvania generations before Lexington and Concord.

And the current flap over “immigration reform” is just the latest recurrence of the old fundamental prejudices.

If we all actually went to vote on March 3, sure, that makes sense. But ballots will be coming in as those first four contests are going on. Makes more sense to wait it out and see what happens on Super Tuesday. Especially if as much as a quarter of voters cast ballots before the actual primary date.

Honest question:

What good would making election day a national holiday actually do?

There are a lot of national holidays where most people work - MLK’s Birthday, Washington’s Birthday (aka Presidents’ Day), Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day. I doubt most businesses are going to close for election day the way that they do for the “major” holidays (and hell, there are plenty of business that don’t even close for all of those).

Yeah the idea of two nominees in their 70’s who both are inflexible and rigid would be pretty bad. I am not thrilled with the prospect of Biden but I think Biden at least if he won would be a capable CinC and have a cabinet of qualified men and women. Bernie? I trust him almost as much as I do Trump to have a capable cabinet and team of advisers. Both Bernie and Trump operate under “You agree with my worldview, support me, and that’s how you get jobs”. I can see Bernie giving Nina Turner, Jeff Weaver, David Sirota, and others jobs that they would be unqualified for and that they would fail miserably at since they’re where they are because they are loyal to Bernie not because of any competency or knowledge in an issue. Biden wouldn’t do that IMO.

It is a good question, and I was thinking about that too… if the idea is to get everyone to the polls, a national holiday wouldn’t work since there are essential workers and retail businesses wouldn’t close because it’d be an economic loss for them.

It seems more about value signaling that it’s important to focus on the mechanics of voting.

I’d rather see them look into a single day primary vote nationwide. Eliminate caucuses. Allow mail-in ballots. Do more to make it easier to vote. Make voting in primaries and local elections all occur on the same day within a state, rather than allowing localities to pick and choose the dates, which makes it even more inconvenient and confusing.
