Rep. Peter King claims that the asylum process is broken, and that Trump’s fixing it.
Support reasonable measures by AG Barr to get control of asylum abuses at border. Must be done. @FoxNews pic.twitter.com/KNuAcJPZAm
— Rep. Pete King (@RepPeteKing) April 17, 2019
He’s fixing it in the way that a crook hires a fixer to eliminate the problem.
The reality is that the asylum process is broken, but for an entirely different reason.
It’s broken because of a lack of judges available to process the claims in a timely manner. It’s the same problem with immigration generally. Visa overstays are the main reason people are here illegally - not because they crossed the border illegally. Failing to deal with all the paperwork and failing to timely process the claims is why there’s a mess.
The number of people seeking asylum has climbed because of various crises across Latin America, but the US continues to throttle the number of people coming in and denying more asylum claims than they have in the past few years (although the number of those claims adjudicated is under 45,000 a year for the past decade). The percentage of those who have asylum relief granted remains 30% and below (and actually ticked up in 2018). This isn’t a crisis.
We’re talking about 45,000 people being processed for asylum claims. We have a nation of over 324 million. Those seeking asylum is .000138 of the US population.
That’s the threat here. That is what Trump and the GOP are so fearful of.
UPDATE:

…..and the horse you rode in on.
Roy’s buddy’s election eve admission that the two of them had actually visited a pedo-pay house in Vietnam remains one of the most amazing political moments of the last 20 years. Of course, he denied that they patronized the place but an MP officer who knew about such a place really needs a damn good explanation for why he didn’t shut it down. No such explanation was forthcoming.

Schumer recruits Amy McGrath to run against McConnell…
The lede suggests that it’s more evidence of frayed relations between McConnell and Schumer.
Oh fucking really? McConnell eviscerates comity, holds open the empty Scalia seat preventing Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland from ever getting considered in committee, let alone a vote, and these media hacks continue to treat this like Schumer’s got to maintain some kind of good relations with the guy who has done more damage to the nation than anyone else over the past several years - including Trump and Ryan.
Good. Democrats should be targeting GOPers across the Senate who are up for reelection. To retake the Senate, they’ll have to do much more of this. Democrats have to act with the desperation needed in retaking the House last year.
The only way to begin undoing the damage the GOP has inflicted over the past two years is to take back the Senate, which continues to rubber stamp Trump picks for the judiciary and across the admin (where Trump bothers to actually nominate someone).

The thing is and this is why I laugh my ass off when white supremacists say “WE SHOULD UNITE OVER OUR COMMON WHITENESS” and it’s like uh your ideological ancestors were the same ones saying my family really wasn’t “white” because they were the wrong religion, ethnic background, and didn’t look “Western.” Not that I would join up with white supremacists anyhow since I think racial superiority is an absurd construct but it’s really funny when white supremacists want me to forget that they were the ones who told my mom’s grandparents that they didn’t belong in this country or my Dad’s that their Catholic faith meant that electing one of them would mean they would side with the Pope over secular means. Besides I subscribe to the notion that we’ve all been a newcomer at one point so why not welcome people who WANT to be here. Why not welcome people whose children will grow up loving this country and serving it in some way. When Germany invaded Czechoslovakia in the late 30’s and when the original “America Firsters” could have cared less about Hitler, my grandmother’s cousin enlisted in the Marines. He ended up planting the flag on Iwo Jima with five other guys including a Native American named Ira Hayes. Ira admired cousin Mike. Ira’s family had been in the US for generations in Arizona and Mike had arrived as a boy but they respected each other and didn’t see one as inferior to the other. That’s how it should be. America is not about a race or ethnicity. It’s about wanting to belong. And that’s something Nativists have never gotten about this country whether they were bellyaching about the Irish in the Famine years or today complaining about asylum seekers.

My Slovak grandfather came over as an indentured servant of the Aultman-Taylor Machinery Company in Mansfield Ohio for his tool and dye and machining skills.
How does that kind of thing fall into the thinking about immigrants and whether wanted or not?
There were all kinds of reasons for people to come to America, it’s sickening some now want to simplify it all down to calling everyone illegal aliens. Two words that are now nothing but an excuse to ‘other’ people and put them in a category of not my problem, they are not like us and I don’t care.

There’s always been a nativist strain of American politics. Remember Daniel Day Lewis’s character in Gangs of New York complaining not only about the recently freed slaves, but the dirty Irish who were fouling up his fair city.

What gets me OA is how smug people are that MY ANCESTORS DID IT RIGHT. And we’ve seen through genealogical research that a lot of them like Tami Lahren’s ancestor and Trump’s grandfather did not in fact and John Kelly’s grandfather was still only speaking Italian. I actually recently started a biography of Honus Wagner- family lore is that my Dad’s mother’s father was friends with him but that’s another story. Anyhow Honus’s parents were German immigrants and the biographer talks about how Honus spoke German at home as his first language. I’m sure that was the case for my dad’s father’s father. I know that my mom’s maternal grandmother never learned English fully. A lot of people born here have it made because of the hard work others did before them and they shit on the newcomers. It breaks my heart so much when I see some of my cousins I’ve met through my research resort to the same Know-Nothing crap that was directed at our ancestors.

I think what makes these times unique is that it’s the American President leading the Nativist charge. Lincoln wasn’t a Nativist. And you know what, Jackson for all his flaws and made he had a lot of them wasn’t really one either.
Hi everybody, I just logged in so I don’t know if people have discussed this, but on the Maddow show last night I learned that in 1989 William Barr wrote a memo for the justice department attempting to justify allowing FBI officers to arrest Noriega in Panama. When the existence of the memo got leaked, Congress had Barr appear for questioning. He refused to provide them with a copy but told them he would “summarize the main conclusions”. They later got hold of the memo and discovered that he had materially misrepresented the contents and meaning of the memo———-the exact thing he appears to be doing again right now!
My question is, why was he not disbarred for lying to Congress, or Hell, why was he not prosecuted for that felony? Why did the Senate confirm as AG a man known for lying to Congress?

The Senate GOP Majority was going to confirm pretty much anyone Trump picked IMO. Barr is dirty as hell. It’s really bad when Sessions looks ethical compared to you. Not defending Sessions’ odious views but he was more ethical in his job than Barr is and was.

Immigrant Andrew Sullivan Haaaaate Immigrants. How Ever Could That Be? (Wonkette)
Andrew Sullivan was on “Hardball” last night. Essentially he was explaining he likes Trump’s racist immigration policies, he just doesn’t like the pitchman.
He also went after Zerlina Maxwell for suggesting Sullivan read Malcom Nance’s book “The Plot to Destroy America.”
It’s the same from people like David Frum (who was also on the show) and Jennifer Rubin. The racism’s fine. They just wish Trump was using GOP-approved dogwhistles.

I’m trying to think if we ever truly had a Nativist as President. Wilson was a bigot too but I wouldn’t really characterize him as a nativist necessarily. Millard Fillmore later ran on the Know Nothing ticket but he didn’t use the power of the Presidency to deny Irish emigrants who were arriving in the thousands during his Presidency which coincided with the Famine and coincidentally enough for me is when my Nana’s maternal grandfather arrived from Ireland. On the other side. You had Lincoln who spoke I think as well about the ugliness of nativism as he did about the evils of slavery. And you had President Ford who welcomed people fleeing Vietnam in the aftermath of the Vietnam War which IMO was President Ford’s finest hour as President.

Trump I think shows that Nativism is about race and ethnicity though. Exempting Obama, no otehr President has a more recent pedigree than he does given that Trump’s paternal grandparents, mother, and two of his three were immigrants. That’s all done by his supporters to suggest that he’s not being bigoted and just wants people to follow the law but Trump as we know has shown hostility towards asylum seekers and people emigrating from what he considers “shithole countries.”

Depending on how many candidates are alive for Super Tuesday… there is an outside chance for a brokered convention.
There’s the four early contests (IA, NH, NV, and SC) then there’s Super Tuesday which includes California, Texas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Virginia as the big states on March 3. Early/absentee voting in California is going to start around February 3, which happens to be the same day as the Iowa caucuses.
With that wrinkle of early voting happening when the first four contests are going on, we might not see the traditional field narrowing until after Super Tuesday.

If we all actually went to vote on March 3, sure, that makes sense. But ballots will be coming in as those first four contests are going on. What good would making election day a national holiday actually do?
There are a lot of national holidays where most people work - MLK’s Birthday, Washington’s Birthday (aka Presidents’ Day), Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day. I trust him almost as much as I do Trump to have a capable cabinet and team of advisers. Both Bernie and Trump operate under “You agree with my worldview, support me, and that’s how you get jobs”. I can see Bernie giving Nina Turner, Jeff Weaver, David Sirota, and others jobs that they would be unqualified for and that they would fail miserably at since they’re where they are because they are loyal to Bernie not because of any competency or knowledge in an issue. Biden wouldn’t do that IMO.
re: #175 Anymouse 🌹
That depends on how you write the bill.
Many businesses do close for other holidays, excepting certain businesses required for urgent things. For holidays such as Presidents Day, nearly everything here is closed.
Most things besides garden shops are closed for our one state holiday, Arbor Day.
i think the point is that they would be required to give people enough / reasonable time to vote, even if they were open
re: #182 HappyWarrior
I’m crashing on your couch in the CR if that’s the race :). Tulsi isn’t going anywhere though.
Heh. Yeah, Tulsi isn’t going anywhere; if she had any sense, she’d just quit right now. Who knows? Maybe she’ll quit soon and try to run with Stein on a Green Party ticket or something.
re: #155 HappyWarrior
Unfortunately and I like him but I think Booker will be done early and the two governors. Can’t see Julian Castro going far either. Ditto Gillibrand. Warren is a wild card imo as is Mayor Pete and Beto. Beto, Bernie, Biden if he runs, & Harris I see lasting the longest with certainty. Klobuchar is also a wild card imo.
I am leaning Warren at this time. She is out there with specific policy ideas while most of the others are just speaking in generalities. But as has been pointed out, it’s still early in the cycle. She may burn out before the debates.
re: #167 KGxvi
It is a good question, and I was thinking about that too… if the idea is to get everyone to the polls, a national holiday wouldn’t work since there are essential workers and retail businesses wouldn’t close because it’d be an economic loss for them.
It seems more about value signaling that it’s important to focus on the mechanics of voting.
I’d rather see them look into a single day primary vote nationwide. Eliminate caucuses. Allow mail-in ballots. Do more to make it easier to vote. Make voting in primaries and local elections all occur on the same day within a state, rather than allowing localities to pick and choose the dates, which makes it even more inconvenient and confusing.

The GOP needs a RICO prosecution at this point.
Waiting for Cummings to open up a hearing about the nasty stuff that went down with the Ohio State Wrestling Team!

But still… good for him.
He has not apologised for all of his anti-gay legislation and positions, and is thinking about getting back into politics.
No good for him. He’s a Christian and conservative hypocrite.

Ha I dunno. Thankfully I think Tulsi did decide to resign in Congress so the new Congressperson from Hawaii will be representing Hawaii rather than Assad.

The “good for him” was mostly sarcastic, which I realize doesn’t come across clearly in this format.

good grief
They do understand that as people drop out, they will tend to ask their delegates to pledge to someone else.

I’m backing Warren and she may just gain traction in Iowa that could let her overcome Bernie in New Hampshire.

I have really warmed on Warren since I’m definitely seeing that she’s got a plan. I just worry that she may an easy lightening rod for the GOP to run against. I’d easily take her over Bernie though.

I would love it Joe if Warren ended up as the Progressive type favorite rather than Bernie. Warren unlike Sanders is a do-er. I pointed out to my brother who likes Bernie that Elizabeth has actually accomplished a lot more than Bernie has despite being in Congress 22 years less.

Well I wonder what Franky Graham Cracker gonna say bout that!
He’s a former Republican now. Doesn’t count.

I think it’s just former GOP Congressman. I don’t think he left the GOP. Can’t say I’m shocked by this though. There were rumors about him while he was in Congress. I don’t care what anyone does in their private life but I’m sure there are plenty of clips of him opposing LGBT rights vocally as a member of Congress and that’s not okay.
Time to call it a day. Have a good one, Lizards.

In the religious people’s eyes, he’s not in Congress, therefore they don’t have to keep him as one of their own. Hence, not a “Republican.”

Ahhh my bad. Sorry I thought you were implying he had left the GOP.

My only concern is Warren is her age. She’ll be 71 on inauguration day 2021. That will make her the oldest person ever to become president.

There’s that too. I do worry about her age less than Bernie and Biden since she’s younger.

We’ll see. The thing I worry about is that IF a woman wins the primaries, the MSM will treat her as they did HRC and ignore her in favor of giving time to an empty podium.

She’s already I think to some extent gotten the HRC treatment.

Anyone remember all the bitching about Comey going out of his normal area and holding the press conference to say there would be no charges in regards to Hillary’s email but she was a very bad person because she let three or so emails slip through that were not really all that classified?
And then he comes out with his October surprise letter that says they might have to do more investigatin’ and stuff.
And now Barr is going out of the normal range of an AG and putting on a display of his own making under his own power to most likely excuse Trump while saving his own butt for how he is handling this.
As the commercial said: This is not how any of this is done!
re: #176 KGxvi
I would fully expect a “legit” third party challenge if it looks like that will be the general election. I would also probably be very sympathetic to whomever leads that third party challenge.
Unless it’s Mr Starbucks. I can’t imagine feeling any sympathy to him.

Jordan has a lot of older folks in many parts of his district in Ohio. I’m sure they are not going to be too happy with Gymmy over this one, everyone is hit by high prescription prices.
