A Beautiful Live Performance by Camila Meza & the Nectar Orchestra [VIDEO]

YouTube

Some musicians don’t have to expend much effort to achieve radiance. Camila Meza is one of these — a singer-songwriter and improvising guitarist originally from Santiago, Chile, and now a luminous fixture on the scene in New York. Ámbar, her major-label debut, just out on Masterworks, captures the deep synthesis in her music, with a chamber-jazz cohort she calls the Nectar Orchestra.

For this Jazz Night in America concert video, Meza convened the Nectar Orchestra in a Brooklyn loft for a small audience of friends. The intimacy of the setting perfectly suits her jewel-like vocal tone, as well as the breathing string arrangements by bassist Noam Weisenberg.

Bookended by originals “Kallfu,” written in tribute to the indigenous Mapuche people of Southern Chile, and “Ámbar,” a song of healing, the concert also features versions of two touchstone Brazilian songs, “Milagre Dos Peixes” (Fernando Brant/Milton Nascimento) and “Olha Maria” (Antonio Carlos Jobim/Chico Buarque/Vinícius de Moraes).

Meza also expresses earnest sociopolitical ideals in a song with English lyrics: “This Is Not America.” David Bowie recorded it with the Pat Metheny Group in 1985, the year Meza was born. She not only rises to the song’s challenge; she makes its anguish feel as if it emanates from her core. Not to mention the hyper-articulate guitar solo she fashions — just one of several reasons her performance feels aglow. —NATE CHINEN

This concert was recorded on March 26th, 2019 at a private loft in Brooklyn, N.Y.

My son found the LGF theme song. It’s from an anime called Carol and Tuesday. In this part of the story, there is a singing contest.

The song is NSFW.

re: #324 Targetpractice

So much for the “Climate change will be awesome because all that CO2 will be beneficial to farming!” argument. Kinda hard to farm much of anything if you and your fields are under several feet of water.

Actually, there’s another side to the problem. The current research being done on crop plants grown in high CO2 environments show a decrease in nutritional density.

A quick synopsis from Forbes

Every plant has a particular genetically-determined temperature range in which it grows quite happily, but temperatures outside this range can wreak havoc on that plant’s life cycle. Thus, increases in surface temperatures in tropical and subtropical regions, such as those expected by the end of this century, are predicted to reduce rice and maize harvests by 20% to 40%.

Now, a new study published in the journal Science Advances has become the latest in an increasing number of studies to show that rising CO2 levels also threaten food security in another way: by directly decreasing the nutritional value of major crops.

Not to mention that somewhere between 500 and 1000 ppm we will hit the threshold where the CO2 will begin peoples cognitive abilities. IIRC, we are at 400-something ppm…

I am trying to get a bunch of feral cats and kittens tame enough to get the to the vet for “fixing.” This one is my favorite (kiss of death). Also the shyest. Never had one this color before. Smoke? I caught him/her this morning, and it consented to eat some baby food from my finger, and accepted a bit of loving while squirming. Then dashed off as soon as I put it down. Would love to have this one as a house cat…

re: #19 Colère Tueur de Lapin

Wasn’t as strictly documented that real science demands… I’m going by Wikipedia: Carbon Dioxide: Toxicity: Below 1%:

There are few studies of the health effects of long-term continuous CO2 exposure on humans and animals at levels below 1%. Occupational CO2 exposure limits have been set in the United States at 0.5% (5000 ppm) for an eight-hour period. At this CO2 concentration, International Space Station crew experienced headaches, lethargy, mental slowness, emotional irritation, and sleep disruption.
Studies in animals at 0.5% CO2 have demonstrated kidney calcification and bone loss after eight weeks of exposure. A study of humans exposed in 2.5 hour sessions demonstrated significant effects on cognitive abilities at concentrations as low as 0.1% (1000ppm) CO2 likely due to CO2 induced increases in cerebral blood flow. Another study observed a decline in basic activity level and information usage at 1000 ppm, when compared to 500 ppm.

Fighting the good fight…

Nurses, doctors, and medical students on Saturday afternoon gathered outside the Hyatt Regency hotel in Chicago, where the largest professional association for physicians was holding their annual meeting, to demand that the group “do no harm” and stop standing in the way of real, meaningful healthcare reform.

National Nurses United (NNU) and Physicians for a National Health Plan (PNHP) were among the groups that gathered to call on the American Medical Association (AMA) to support a Medicare for All program, which would replace the for-profit health insurance industry with government-funded healthcare for everyone in the United States.

Source: Raw Story

It goes on to say that AMA membership is only about 25% of the country’s physicians (down from 75% in the 1950s).

In this photo, he’s sporting his schnauzer look. It’s a relatively new thing the groomer is doing. It’s cute when he gets home from the groomer, but after a few months, it’s a bit of a pain with the fur/hair so long around his mouth.
