Except that he was part of Epstein’s defense team that blackmailed prosecutors as part of the successful effort to get the sweetheart deal. From Acosta:

The defense strategy was not limited to legal issues. Defense counsel investigated individual prosecutors and their families, looking for personal peccadilloes that may provide a basis for disqualification.

Dershowitz claims that Acosta is lying, but it’s not clear what Acosta would gain by announcing publicly that he could be intimidated.

Speaking of Acosta, as satisfying as it might be to impeach him, I’m seeing some stories indicating he’s kind of unpopular with some of Trump’s buddies because he is not getting rid of worker protections fast enough. We’ll have to see if his tenure in the cabinet follows the usual path of verbal support from Trump followed within a week by finding himself out of a job.

“Artisanal” (or subsistence) gold mining is tearing up the Amazon region. I was reading an article about this in Spanish earlier this week. The gold miners, who work on a very small scale (hence “artisanal”) use mercury to leach out minute gold particles. The mercury is poisoning parts of the Amazon forest watershed. The mining itself is tearing up the jungle at or near the Amazon or its many tributaries.

In the 90s, the Army contracted for a massive computerization program to run the day-to-day functions of all installations world-wide. It was one of the biggest IT contracts let to that time. Simply because of scale, it went so FUBAHR that it was featured in a Scientific American article and an algorithm to predict the likelihood of a grand project’s failure.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again : the US Navy has Submarine Squadron Six based in Qatar.

These are either the most capable hunter/killer boats in the world, or they are not.

If they are, the Iranians couldn’t get close to those tankers to plant mines on them.

If they are, the boats, which left from UAR and Saudi ports, had mines placed on them in those ports.

Who made the best PR off the explosions? Iran or Saudi Arabia?

The church formerly known as Mormon sent out a survey to some church members asking how they would feel if the church lowered the age for bishop interviews to eight. These interviews currently start at just before age 12, and have been seriously criticized because some bishops have asked teenagers sexually inappropriate questions (like, “do you masturbate? have you had sex?” I could go on but it gets gross).

Some of the recipients were REALLY upset about the survey and took screenshots as they answered it, and turned those screenshots over to a Utah TV station. Here’s the story:

I’d just note that the church formerly known as Mormon bounced a guy last year for publicly challenging the organization on its continued insistence on invasive youth interviews. Sam Young is still planning on holding a rally in Salt Lake City at the next General Conference…it’s not clear if this includes a march up to Temple Square from the City-County building, but it should. But this feels like the church is doubling down on its invasiveness and I hope there’s a LOT of pushback. Untrained accountants and lawyers and middle managers called “bishops” should not be asking questions that are only appropriate for police to be asking under very specific circumstances.

And I am like a lot of Americans. I worked for the Government for twenty years. I have a retirement pension that includes health insurance for me and my wife. It drops about $2800 a month into my bank account.

We made some investments that turned out OK, bit it was mostly in Roth IRAs. They total about $50,000. Social Security in a couple of years will kick around another $2,200 a month.

However, I am sitting on a house that we bought in 1997 for $155,000 and is now worth north of $750,000.

The property tax last year was over $12,000. Texas has no income tax, so property tax is huge and hits retired folks like me like a bat to the head.

I think we will be all right, but we are one State Statute change from being paupers.

Same here, though I am much poorer than you.

My wife has the remains of her IRA from Digital Equipment’s retirement fund, which when it was turned over to a bank by Digital to operate lost over 90% of it in what turned out to be a large fraud case. She has about $50,000.

Our house we bought for $12,000 after the sale of our home in Oklahoma for $7,000. Improvements to our house caused the assessor to raise its tax value to about $15,000. Our property taxes were about $400 this year. We have a state income tax but are too poor to pay anything.

Property taxes in Nebraska are ranked 44th in the nation, Texas is 45th. [edit, I got that backward, 44th and 45th refer to the lowest rate, not the highest, thus TX and NE are near the top]

The continuous accumulation of carbon dioxide in the planet’s oceans—which shows no sign of stopping due to humanity’s relentless consumption of fossil fuels—is likely to trigger a chemical reaction in Earth’s carbon cycle similar to those which happened just before mass extinction events, according to a new study.

MIT geophysics professor Daniel Rothman released new data on Monday showing that carbon levels today could be fast approaching a tipping point threshold that could trigger extreme ocean acidification similar to the kind that contributed to the Permian-Triassic mass extinction that occurred about 250 million years ago.

Rothman’s new research comes two years after he predicted that a mass extinction event could take place at the end of this century. Since 2017, he has been working to understand how life on Earth might be wiped out due to increased carbon in the oceans.

Rothman created a model in which he simulated adding carbon dioxide to oceans, finding that when the gas was added to an already-stable marine environment, only temporary acidification occurred.

When he continuously pumped carbon into the oceans, however, as humans have been doing at greater and greater levels since the late 18th century, the ocean model eventually reached a threshold which triggered what MIT called “a cascade of chemical feedbacks,” or “excitation,” causing extreme acidification and worsening the warming effects of the originally-added carbon.

I don’t know how to get USGS to display maps for my area. All they show are tightly-bunched recorded numbers of flow rate and such in a table.

The National Weather Service has a map for my state, which shows flooding mostly receded now except on the Niobrara River in the northeast, and the Loup River system in the centre of the state.

On top of these errors, the former special counsel said he deliberately wrote the report to be unclear because it would be unfair to make clear criminal accusations against a president.

Time for some traffic problems in the Supreme Court docket.

Last week, the high court announced it would hear arguments in the infamous ‘Bridgegate’ case, where officials in former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s office were convicted of fraud and abuse of office for engineering a traffic jam as a form of political payback.

The court’s decision to hear the case follows two decisions over the past 10 years that have tamped down laws traditionally used to bring corruption cases against public officials.

Bridgegate could be a third notch in what legal experts described to TPM as a trend in the Supreme Court’s thinking on the topic, moving to limit the scope of statutes traditionally used to hold public officials accountable for corruption. This has stoked concern that the court may be poised to define public corruption so narrowly as to extinguish future prosecutions.

With all the problems Boeing is facing with the 737Max, you know what else is going to get hurt? US trade balance, because aircraft is one of the biggest industries for exports, and Boeing is the nation’s biggest exporter. Annually, it’s a nearly $100 billion, so what happens with Boeing will help/harm the trade balance.

That means, if Trump wants to interfere and muck about with the trade balance, he could push for the FAA to certify the changes, or he could delay them even further.

We’ve repeatedly seen Trump interfere in business actions, and I wouldn’t put this past him either.

The Army Corps and forecasts are warning that the Mississippi will crest at 19 feet in NOLA during the Invest92 event (what could potentially become Tropical Storm Barry). The levees are designed to 20 feet. Wave action could overtop the levees. We could see even high surge, which would overwhelm the flood protection system in place.

None of this is good news. This storm is likely hitting while the river is still well above normal flow thanks to the wet spring/summer thus far across the watershed.

Katrina’s flood surge was 13 feet. If a storm like that hit with the current conditions, NOLA would cease to exist (and I’m not being alarmist). It would flood nearly the entire city with more than 10 feet of water.

I don’t think he cleared Trump of crimes. Mueller has stated that he didn’t get the full cooperation, and there’s still portions of the report that aren’t public.

It further falls to the issue of impeachment and that Mueller threw the case to Congress since he couldn’t indict due to DOJ policy.

It is plausible that Mueller missed campaign finance violations because he didn’t have experts on his team looking at that aspect, but that could be rectified going forward - and the House could dig into this too (both in the Mueller testimony and via impeachment).

Dershowitz has been accused of participating in Epstein’s alleged sex trafficking operation. Virginia Giuffre, who is suing Dershowitz for defamation, claims she had sex with him as part of that operation.

It’s true- the indictment doesn’t specifically or explicitly mention Dershowitz.

Rather, it mentions that Epstein and associates conspired to engage in child sex trafficking.

The identify of the associates is not known.

Saying the person donating the kidney is no longer responsible for the expense of travel or removal of the kidney only means those costs will be passed on to the recipient

That means the price of a kidney transplant for recipients goes up at least double and probably more, moving those transplants further out of reach for the poor and middle class.

There’s no way an insurance company would cover it either (a health insurance company is not going to pay for hotels and travel).

As a veteran, Lowes treats you much better. They both give you a 10% discount but at Lowes it is a one time set up where HD they used to make you head over the customer service with your DD214. I mean it is cool that they do that but made you jump through hopes where the other just asked you for your account number (phone number) at check out.

The Lowes near me also has veteran parking. Again, not necessary but pretty cool. I leave it for the older gents but it is a nice gesture.

I have a German friend who now lives in Switzerland (his wife is Swiss) who explained this to me.

Essentially, Germany has a movement similar to our so-called sovereign citizens who feel the Federal Republic of Germany is a fictional corporation, and the true Germany is the former German Empire under its Kaisers (including all the racism, antisemitism, and anti-Catholicism which goes with Germany’s Lutheran heritage).

Granted, the way in which the Zone of Allied Occupation became the Federal Republic of Germany (later annexing the remains of the German Democratic Republic) was a bit quirky and historically unprecedented, but these “Free Citizens of the Reich”, the Freie Reichsbürger, insist that it is just a corporate entity with no sovereignty.

I have been translating documents for an aristocrat from Eastern Germany whose properties were expropriated by the Soviet Authorities and has been unable to receive any compensation.

As he has been shot down by every court he has gone to, he has also taken the tack of attacking the legitimacy and sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Germany

But as soon as the draft ended, a majority of the activists said “okay that’s done, mission accomplished, time to go home and devote myself entirely to my own life and we’ll just trust the government to run itself on altruism from now on.”

Leaving the playing field open.

While the right-wingers’ response was “okay, halftime. Let’s go in the locker room and strategize how to take back the ground we’ve lost.” And when they returned to the field, there was no opposition.

(ETA: Earl Warren was a Republican appointment. Having been a Republican governor. Back before the great re-alignment, back when Republicans could be liberals and Southern Democrats really weren’t.)

There’s three malls here in Ostrava, and if you walked into any of them, you’d think you’d stepped back into American mall culture of the 1980s. These place are absolutely thriving….business is booming for shopping centers here.

Some details about the effects of Trump’s EO on organ transplants (vox.com):

Living donors

The executive order attempts to reform the system for living kidney donors (like me), as well as living liver, lung, and intestine donors, by making sure donors are held financially harmless for donating. While donors don’t have to pay for their medical procedures, they do typically have to cover other expenses like travel to and from the hospital, child and elder care they can’t perform while they’re recovering, lost wages while they’re off from work, and so on. Donors to low-income patients can get travel expenses paid for now, but the executive order would allow people with higher incomes to benefit, and enable reimbursement of more significant costs like lost wages and child care.

That could dramatically increase living donations. Since Israel passed a law in 2008 reimbursing donor expenses and providing other benefits, live donation rates have quadrupled. Josh Morrison, an altruistic kidney donor who runs the advocacy group Waitlist Zero, conservatively estimates that the regulatory change might boost donations in the US by 25 percent. That would mean 1,600 or so additional donors every year, each of whom would enable their recipient to live, on average, nine to 10 years longer.

Deceased donation

The second aspect of the executive order targets deceased donation. In the US, there are 58 agencies with local monopolies over the provision of dead people’s organs, known as organ procurement organizations (OPOs). For some time now, independent analysts and investigative reporters have argued that OPOs are underusing deceased donor organs by the tens of thousands. One report estimated that 28,000 usable organs are abandoned; another put the number at 75,000.

The basic argument is that OPOs face perverse incentives: For instance, they’re often evaluated on the basis of how many organs are recovered per “eligible death,” but “eligible death” is a determination made by the OPOs themselves, making it easy to juke the stats without actually getting more people organs. The result is that tens of thousands of organs go unused.

The executive order scraps the existing evaluation system in favor of two simple, harder-to-game criteria: the number of deceased donors as a share of the total number of deceased people 75 and younger with causes of death compatible with donation (an objective standard determined ahead of time); and the number of organs recovered as a share of that group of deceased people.

‘58 here. I once helped make an anti-Dole sign when he was running for Ford’s VP. That’s as close as I got to that campaign.

The 60’s that we grew up in was the result of well-organized indefatigable activism, and good coordination and mutual assistance between the various single-issue enthusiasts.

That’s why there’s a Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act, and Title IX and Title X, and EPA, and Roe v Wade, and no draft, etc etc etc…

But as soon as the draft ended, a majority of the activists said “okay that’s done, mission accomplished, time to go home and devote myself entirely to my own life and we’ll just trust the government to run itself on altruism from now on.”

Leaving the playing field open.

And after Reagan tossed the Fundamentalist Christians aside after using them to get elected, they were the ones who took to activism and insinuating their people into all levels of public administration, education, military and government. They now have their man one heartbeat away from the Presidency.

I live in the land of the mall - Northern NJ, where there’s some of the most profitable malls in the nation. There’s also a couple of struggling malls that are attempting turnarounds (mostly successful).

Garden State Plaza (GSP): one of the largest and most profitable in nation. Owned by Westfield. It’s got massive investment and reimagining spaces, including taking a JC Penney’s that has no exterior exits to street and turning it into a new space; they’re also looking to add housing and converting additional space to retail and restaurants.

Bergen Town Center: former Bergen Mall - and one that was a dead mall walking. Owners converted it into an outlet haven anchored by a Whole Foods, Century 21, Nordstroms Off the Rack, etc., and it does gangbusters.

Shops at Riverside: always seen as the upscale mall, until GSP went all in on luxury with a wing dedicated to the likes of Tiffanys and other lux brands. They’re in midst of multimillion dollar expansion/renovation, including creating a eat-in AMC theater out of former Saks space. They’ve moved various restaurants and retail around to carve out a new main entry point.

Paramus Park: home to Sears and Macys - it’s the mall you go to when you don’t want to fight the crowds. Sears is toast, so they’re building out a Stew Leonards. It gets fraction of foot traffic, and there was a proposal to build a theater there as well.

Willowbrook Mall (Wayne): Store expansions, including food court and new restaurants. Sears was toast, so space was carved up and part became a Dave and Busters.

Wayne Town Center (Wayne) Adjacent to Willowbrook, this was a dead mall. They tore it down to build a Costco and other big box stores like a DSW. That Costco-centric space is perpetually busy.

Nanuet Mall (NY): This was officially a dead mall, and the owners tore all but the Macys down and built an outdoor arrangement with stores, restaurants, and a Fairway market.

I can’t imagine ownership is as important as consumer traffic. Sure, they could be reasonably priced per square foot based on that, but the latter is just as important than the former.

As a veteran, Lowes treats you much better. They both give you a 10% discount but at Lowes it is a one time set up where HD they used to make you head over the customer service with your DD214. I mean it is cool that they do that but made you jump through hopes where the other just asked you for your account number (phone number) at check out.

The Lowes near me also has veteran parking. Again, not necessary but pretty cool. I leave it for the older gents but it is a nice gesture.

In our town, HD and Lowe’s go head-head. Both have been good supporters of our Habitat affiliate, but I’ve been boycotting HD for years because of their aggressively shitty anti-union activity.

(Lowe’s also has a handicap parking slot reserved for Purple Heart recipients.)

This would be the first time I can recall a hurricane forming this far into the Gulf this early in the season. Doing a quick search, and I can’t find any storm that actually started in the Gulf as a hurricane - the storms typically came in from the Atlantic at strength.

High water temps favor stronger storms, create conditions for storms, and enable long endurance storms.

Just read through some of the tweets and the hate that some people have for her. As if a woman can’t show joy, mug for the cameras, and be ebullient in kicking ass and taking names at the very top of her sport and the game of soccer.

These same critics don’t have issues when guys do the same. Note how so many criticized her and her teammates for their goal celebrations. I get if you want to criticize that you should act like you’ve been there before, but the sportsworld is a place where celebrations are a thing - like when guys slide out after goals, take off their jerseys, and do other crazy stuff. Why shouldn’t Rapinoe do the same?

Oh yeah, it comes back to criticizing the patriarchy - that women are paid so much less than men, despite there being higher ratings. FIFA is making crazy money off the women, and they’re not getting anywhere near what they should get.

Men get $400 million. Women $30. Even doubling it to $60 million is an insult.
