I suspect that Gorka would welcome that, as it would get him front of cameras again for a second or two.

Clearly a win-win. :)

He certainly succeeded in his major goals. He fired up his sociopathic base, he further traumatized and terrified a lot of defenseless people, and he got a lot of news and pundit coverage. And it was all about him.

This is happening in Yemen as well. Look for more conflict over dwindling resources. And mass migrations as millions desperately search for a way out of death.

And, as you are well aware, it is happening in Guatemala right now, which is fueling some of the refugees we are currently seeing.

Last week, the president highlighted a policy in the works meant to narrow the gaps between what drugs cost in the United States and overseas. On Wednesday, he signed an executive order to transform care for patients with kidney disease.

Both measures were made possible by a provision in the Affordable Care Act, and both would be effectively gutted if the administration’s position prevailed in court. source: NYT

I do! Elgins are my primary interest. I just happened to be carrying a Hamilton PW today.

Grade 296. 18 size, 15 jewels. Hunter configuration (winds at 3:00). Circa 1905. Keystone 25-year gold filled case.

ETA: that serial - 11221112 is also pretty cool.

Wait, you don’t want to move to a spot with what many consider the worst traffic commutes in the nation, one of the highest costs of living in the US, and one of the highest costs of housing in the nation.

On the other hand, we do have the highest per capita ratios of police to population and attorneys per capita in the nation, and we even have a lot of politicians.

Gold filled means two sheets of gold sandwiching ‘base metal’, usually brass. They came in various thicknesses of gold, with 25 year being about the thickest. At that time, watch companies like Elgin, Hamilton, Waltham etc. sold movements only, and other companies sold cases. Jewelers selling watches to consumers would pair the movement with the case according to the customers wishes.

So, you might find a solid gold case with a 7j movement, because the buyer cared more about the case. And railroaders had to have high-grade movements (like the 21j Hamilton I showed), but might put it in a nickel case.

Because the accuracy of the movement was more important. Makes sense. So 15 jewels would be neither best or worst - probably a pretty decent medium. It’s always kept good time for me since the last cleaning.

Dude. I live in the Bay Area. THE highest cost of living. THE highest cost of housing. Plus, I was really thinking farther out than that. I grew up a few miles north of Gettysburg, so that whole area feels like home in a lot of ways.

Has there been anything good to come out of this week at all? I’m barely even able to count Epstein because I’m still not sure if Acosta’s sweetheart deal will render anything that could possibly come of this arrest null and void, not to mention his presser making it clear that he and the Trump administration will do their best to ensure future Epsteins continue to get away with it.

Yep, 15 was a good, solid, medium grade watch. Elgin turned out millions of them, and these 18 size ones tend to be bulletproof. I have one from a few years later, open face configuration (winds at 12) that runs within 30 seconds/ 2 weeks, if I wind it every day.

Good on you for getting it serviced! Not everyone knows to have that done.

Humor aside…

Adams County Pa. is a beautiful area, as is Franklin County. The lady I am seeing lives a bit further south, in Hagerstown (Washington County) Md. The DC metro area pretty much stretches to Frederick County, Maryland these days. And US 15 North from Frederick, seems more and more suburbanized.

Interestingly, a lot of folks I know are looking at moving to places in North Carolina, particularly Asheville.

Myself, if I end up moving, I was thinking Charlottesville, Va. I grew up in Pittsburgh. And have no desire to again experience the winters there.

It LOOKS English, but without seeing the guts, it’s hard to tell. Elgin and Waltham both exported movements for the English market, which Dennison then cased and sold. And the Swiss similarly sold quite a few movements in England that were also cased by English casemakers. In fact my first vintage pocket watch was a Swiss keywind in an English silver case!

So I did it a couple of times while I lived there. Been a few years since the last one but I don’t know any place up here that I’d trust with it.

There are fewer and fewer independent watchmakers out there these days. There were a bunch that trained in the Army during WWII, and then still more who trained at the Bulova and Elgin watchmaking schools, and pretty much every jeweler had a watchmaker on the premises.

Now? Good luck finding a jeweler who doesn’t just send them out, and the Swiss are placing increasingly stringent requirements on independent watchmakers to be allowed to buy parts.

This is why I learned how to fix them myself. I realized I could not afford to both collect watches and have them professionally serviced. But I only do my own, so if I fuck up it’s only me who’s hurt by it.

How much do you run it? If you’re only running it a couple times a year, you can stretch to 10 years between services, assuming your watchmaker used synthetic oils. If you’re running it constantly, of course, it’s more like 5. Used to be 1, when they were using Porpoise Jaw Oil.

Does it have a dustcover? I see the fittings for it. The maker is often on that.

Mid-19th Century English. Fusee-driven (winds by turning the key counterclockwise, doesn’t it?). Right-angle lever escapement, aka “English Lever”. Undersprung. Pinned, rather than screwed together, so PROBABLY from before 1870.

The larger jewels are often called “Liverpool Windows” - and often made of glass, rather than being actual jewels.

Only use it occasionally any more. I do run it every so often and I wear it for things like job interviews. It’s fun to be interviewing for an IT position and pull out a 100+ year old watch to check the time …

Being Madison, I’m sure it was synthetic lube the last time so that’s good to know.

Honestly, in the last 30 years, almost certainly synthetic.

As a general principle, it’s shitty third-world politics to apply the weight of the law to functionaries of a former administration. No more. It would be useful to let grunt-level workers, the privates and corporals, know they will be pursued like Argentinian Nazis

Bet that works differently in Colorado and Alabama.

Good example, though it’s a tangent to the discussion: The rock band Widespread Panic has played 60 sold out shows at Red Rocks, there’s a handful of arrests every year (most or all disorderly conduct) because hey, there’s assholes in the world, but generally there’s not a lot of trouble. The band plays in Oak Mountain Amphitheater or The Wharf in Orange Beach and you’ve got dozens of arrests, mostly for drugs, mostly out-of-staters, *every time they play*. The mayor of Orange Beach has gone on record saying the band is not welcome in town. One time over a hundred people were arrested at Oak Mountain, back in 2000, I believe.

The absolute only thing I agree with those Internet wankers at the White House today is that social media platforms should be treated the same as publishers.

Do that, and they still would have had no access, because holding social media companies responsible for content the same way a newspaper or television outlet can be held for libel would force the libertarian tech-bros to actually do things like kick off the Nazis, people who threaten rape, &c.

France passes 3% tax on tech firms.
bbc.com

The tax is on revenue generated within France by large tech firms. They can avoid it by paying French taxes.

The USAs Twitter, Facebook, and Alphabet complained it was targeted specifically at them. So did the GOP. However, the vast majority of firms are not American, and one of them is French.

An article from last year — maybe someone linked it here at that time? — on how McConnell is playing a role analogous to von Hindenburg. Even the author’s claim that Trumpism isn’t Nazism because, among other differences, “Hitler was an open and ideological opponent of the idea of democracy, whereas neither Trump nor the GOP wants to abolish elections.” doesn’t seem particularly persuasive or comforting.

The one real difference between Trump and Hitler is that Trump has no interest in engaging in warfare to achieve his goals.

That’s arguable considering how hard he’s pushing for armed conflict in Iran, with Bolton in his ear. But on the other end, Hitler waged war to conquer and create an empire. Trump was essentially handed the keys to an empire for the taking, and simply had to do away with the pesky democracy and foreign policy stuff first.

Porn pirating lawyer jailed for five years (BBC)

The guy turned state’s evidence against his partner. His partner got a longer sentence.

TL:DR version: He acquired the copyrights to a number of porn videos.

He then uploaded them to file sharing sites, encouraging people to download them.

His firm then threatened to sue those who did, citing copyright violations.

He got greedy when he also went after ISPs for transferring the files.

Most people would then pay his extortion demand rather than face the law firm in court.

He was ordered to pay restitution to everyone he extorted money from.

We can all be programmed. We all are programmed.

By repeating something over and over we tend to believe it.

This is why the reasoning skills for, say, scientific research require more analytical tools - so beliefs can be weighed objectively.

Otherwise, we just accept what we here repeated over and over.

It takes a lot of inner something - not sure what - to decide to swim upstream.

“…The same thing played out during the Kavanaugh hearing where he used a term in his - a high school yearbook that was a sexual term. And during his hearing, he says no, no, no. It’s not a sexual term. It’s about a drinking game. The problem for him is that there’s literally no evidence on the entire Internet of that being a drinking game until someone within the House of Representatives - again, everything is out in the open so we can geolocate it to that.

During the middle of the hearing, someone in the House of Representatives goes to create the evidence on Wikipedia to make it seem as if he is telling the truth. So you have this back-and-forth, back-and-forth. And it’s our contention that every single political debate moving forward is going to see these kind of tactics utilized again because both sides not only use them but believe that they were the key to their effort, including in winning.”

My congresscritter, Andy Biggs, is the WORST.

Congressman Biggs to Share Stage With Man Who’s Too Anti-Semitic for Fox News

Christopher Farrell was banned from Fox News last year after spreading an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory on an affiliate network.

Now Farrell is slated to headline a luncheon with two top Arizona Republican officials: U.S. Congressman Andy Biggs and State GOP Chair Kelli Ward.

Both Biggs and Ward are scheduled to appear with Farrell at the First Annual America First Luncheon, hosted by the Arizona Republican Assembly, on Saturday, September 21, at the Four Points hotel near South Mountain.

Farrell was permanently banned from Fox News and Fox Business after he claimed to host Lou Dobbs that the billionaire Jewish philanthropist George Soros was funding a migrant caravan headed to the southern border. The baseless claim is rooted in the anti-Semitic belief that Jews secretly control governments and international affairs.

Farrell currently serves as “director of investigations” at Judicial Watch, a right-wing activist group. Mark Spencer, Judicial Watch’s Southwest projects coordinator, who previously served as president of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association, also plans to attend the luncheon.

Putin is in a competitive autocracy??? Please. There is nothing competitive about Russia’s autocracy.

They have elections. They’re not fair, but neither are ours, with Putin stealing Democrats private data and conducting illegal social media campaigns. It’s just a question of degree.

Relatives of people killed in the Boeing 737 Max crash in Indonesia last year have been cheated out of compensation, their lawyers say.

Lawyers told the BBC that many families were persuaded to sign forms preventing them from taking legal action.

BBC Panorama has discovered that other relatives signed similar agreements after two other crashes, stopping them from suing Boeing in the US courts.

Boeing has declined to comment on the agreements.

All 189 passengers and crew died when the Boeing 737 Max crashed into the sea just 13 minutes after taking off from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, on 29 October 2018.

Within weeks, relatives were offered compensation by insurance lawyers.

To access the money, families had to sign agreements that would prevent them from taking legal action against Boeing or the airline, Lion Air.

Never sign anything someone else’s lawyer recommends you sign. No corporation has a person’s interests in mind. None.

OMG I actually found something I agree with Trump on, and that cryptocurrency is bollocks. As for the status of the dollar (3rd tweet), with him in charge, there’s no guarantee it will remain the world’s reserve currency.

Remember that Criswell Bacon has been predicting that the rest of the world will get so fed up with President Fucknuts that they will dump the dollar as the reserve currency.

Hello folks, dropping by a moment… Kamala on Rachael tonight was an insightful thing to behold. Everyone needs to see how the immigration raid threat is literal terrorism. Yes, it’s people with orders to leave in terms of their due process. But no more “felons first”. Not linked t public safety it’s aimed to frighten the whole immigrant community.

We’re have a mild to-do here in Illinois. The DuQuoin State Fair (near Southern Illinois University, Carbondale) booked Confederate Railroad to perform this year. Gov. Pritzker cancelled the booking because they perform in front of a large confederate flag. Noises about censorship.

A large motorcycle dealer picked up the booking, and is having them perform instead.
