I agree with you. The ones who aren’t out-and-out racists themselves don’t really give a shit if a racist asshole sits in the President’s chair. Which, really, makes them racist in a different way - in similar fashion to how sitting passively by and watching evil occur can be as bad as actively participating in the evil.

I’m going to go ahead and say all tRump voters are racist. If you’re OK with racism, then you are a racist. Every member of my family who voted for him is/was a racist. I knew my dad was, but I didn’t know his entire side of the family was (for sure) until tRump.

Five major media outlets in Florida have combined their resources to report exclusively on climate change. It turns out that 65% of Floridians believe that climate change is real, which obviously is progress. We all know that Florida is a coin-flip state, and the orange blimp won the state by 1% point in 2016. I got to thinking the other day: Trump has absolutely no command whatsoever over policy. None. Zero. Floridians are literally seeing flooding in the streets now when the sun is shining. There is no way Trump’s campaign will ever let him be interviewed by any of the local affiliates down in Florida unless it’s Sinclair. He (or rather, his staff) will do whatever it takes to avoid any possibility of ever being asked about climate change at any campaign stop, and there will be no debates scheduled in Florida if he ever agrees to do even one which I highly doubt. The whole schtick of “not getting to watch TV because the damn wind isn’t blowing” isn’t going to fly down there. It’s sixteen months away, but he ain’t winning Florida.

Among those who came out in support of Cummings is beloved Baltimore artist and filmmaker John Waters, whose famous film Hairspray is considered a love letter to the city. In an email to ARTnews, Waters said, “Give me the rats and roaches of Baltimore any day over the lies and racism of your Washington, Mr Trump. Come on over to that neighborhood and see if you have the nerve to say it in person!”

Has anyone seen the show “Love it or List it” on HGTV. It’s a show where a realtor and an interior designer compete. The designer, Hilary Farr, gets a budget from the house owners and attempts to update the house so they stay, while the realtor, David Visentin, shows off houses in an attempt to get them to buy a new house.

Now, do you remember Rocky Horror Picture Show? The bride in the wedding at the beginning, whose mom had gotten into designing movie sets, is Hilary Farr.

There’s a cricket chirping outside. I counted the chirps. There were 37.

The frequency of chirping varies according to temperature. To get a rough estimate of the temperature in degrees fahrenheit, count the number of chirps in 15 seconds and then add 37. The number you get will be an approximation of the outside temperature. So, how do crickets make that chirping sound?

My thermometer says 84.7F

The more authoritarian the system, the faster and more violently things change. It’s a very brittle system, that will seem to work forever without change until it doesn’t. You can see this in the Republicans in the US as well.

This sort of street demonstration in Moscow really scares the Kremlin. Mass protests in the capital are their big worry with the population. As they believe unrest spreads from the capital, Moscow has been given about 8 times the funding per capita compared to other cities to keep this from happening, and yet here we are. My opinion is that the response was weak: the leadership wasn’t confident enough to let the independent Moscow candidates stand, yet it wasn’t confident enough of its own power to shoot people in the streets and rip the mask off.

That being said, the analysts I’ve heard don’t see a mass uprising in Russia due to the Kremlin’s diligent longstanding repression of any liberal opposition. The risk for Putin is a palace coup, where the plotters decide that Putin is unpopular enough for the takeover to succeed. They “systemic” opposition parties are opposition in name only, but I think the closest you could get to a populist takeover would be where the independent-ish faction of the Communists seized the Presidency. More likely it would be one of the other powerful clans in the mafia system, but that would be replacing one bald mob boss for another and wouldn’t solve anything.

I could see a scenario like that; protests continue and get bigger with every passing day. Eventually, increasingly panicky Kremlin insiders conclude that Putin has essentially outlived his usefulness and is now a major liability, so they overthrow him and replace him with someone more palatable.

Hard to say of course. But it’s a possibility.

I think this would be the most likely scenario, and the Kremlin thinks so too. Like any authoritarians, they project like an IMAX. Any mass protests happen in the West, and the Russian media is gleefully announcing the imminent end of the French or German or whatever government. They simply don’t get how the West works politically, but simply act like it was the “black” hat version of their own. They can’t see how this could be a necessary pressure release valve for an open society, but only as a challenge to power.

Quite the brew ha ha

Two people have been arrested after a man dressed as a clown sparked a violent brawl on a cruise ship.
A 43-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman, both from Chigwell, Essex, are in custody following the fight which saw plates and furniture thrown during a black tie event.
Families ran from brawlers in the 16th floor Horizon restaurant of the P&O Britannia ship as it was making its way back to Southampton from Norway at 2am on Friday.
Six people - three men and three women - were assaulted during the ten-minute ordeal and a number of people suffered significant bruising and cuts.
The party started as the ship left Bergen, Norway, just after 2.30pm on Thursday and the fight broke out in the early hours of Friday morning, before the liner docked at Southampton at 6.45am on Saturday.

Agree. The republicans have promoted resentment and bathed their acolytes in fear and falsehoods. Their constant lying has created a mass of people who don’t live in a factual universe. I find it amazing how quickly the goal posts have shifted.

Before: Those cowardly Dems could at least start an impeachment inquiry. They’re destroying the rule of law and democracy. *Sets self on fire*1

Democrats appear to have already started an impeachment inquiry.

Now: Those cowardly Dems need to start impeachment proceedings now or they’ll have destroyed the rule of law and democracy. *Sets self on fire*

from the AM’s electoral-vote.com (clipped a bit)

Q: …one tactic would be to initiate impeachment proceedings whenever convenient and keep them going until Election Day. Then, Trump would be running for president under an impeachment cloud, while negative information about him continued to emerge, and the Senate would have no opportunity to exonerate him. (similar to lawrence tribe’s suggestion of investigate but dont vote on articles)

A: to an extent, that is what they are doing; they’re just not calling it “impeachment proceedings” yet. However, they may well have to make that leap sometime this year, just because “we’re collecting information” doesn’t afford them nearly as much legal oomph in court as “we’re undertaking our Constitutional duty to prepare for impeachment proceedings.”

He can’t throw the election because that opens him up to indictments (state and fed). He needs to string this out as long as possible and then claim he’s too unstable to defend himself in court. Trump is not very smart, but that’s not his downfall. His main problem is that he is extremely impulsive. He can’t control himself.

They talk that crap about Democratic cities. But they never hold the Republican governors and presidents who repeatedly cut urban renewal. And then there’s Trump himself who appointed fucking Carson to head HUD and also of course Cummings’ district is much more than what Trump reduced it to and it’s all America. Don’t fucking tell us to love or leave it when you trash parts of this country.

I still say the democrats should declare all out war on the republicans. Nothing is going to pass the senate if McConnell doesn’t want it so what do you have to lose. Impeach, investigate everyone. Jared. Ivanka and anyone else that deserves it. Trying to reason with Trump is a waist of time. Expose them all in public, drag them through the shit they have started and make the republicans accountable. If the Dems still lose the election then we deserve what we get.

I like what we do in Arizona, for the most part. We have scantron forms, paper, that are run through machines to validate and count them. The one thing I DISLIKE intensely about those forms is that it’s so easy FOR ME to connect the wrong arrow to the wrong person. I stopped voting in judicial retention elections because there were just so many judges listed, and my ability to spoil a ballot paper in that section was nearly 100 percent.

321
mmmirele  Jul 28, 2019 • 9:33:02am

I am so annoyed right now with the professional Evangelical Christian claque. I mentioned Josh Harris, who wrote a book about courtship in the mid 1990s that was hugely influential in Evangelical circles. It also harmed a lot of people. He’s since questioned what he did, and he posted to Instagram on Friday that he no longer believed as he did.

This set off the professional Evangelical Christian claque, who rushed to be first to push Harris out the Christian airlock. Lots of scripture quoting (e.g., 1 John 2:19: “They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.”) and similar.

I will admit, I have lost my shit over this, and I’ll tell you why. It’s not because I support Harris—in fact I think he has some very pressing questions to answer about the child sexual abuse coverup at the church he pastored. It IS because I remember being 19 years old, believing I could never live up to God’s standards as they’d been taught to me, and feeling suicidal because I was a failure in living up to those standards.

The people attacking Harris have no idea where the guy is mentally. And they don’t care. They pile on, with not even a consideration of his mental state. Even a person with rock-solid stability but coming out of that kind of a religious environment could possibly feel like there was no future. But there’s no concern for that among these asshats. It’s all about protecting doctrinal purity.

I just remember being 19 and suicidal and how the mother of a friend of mine talked me off the ledge by discussing God’s grace with me. These people are showing Harris no grace whatsoever. And it pisses me off. I have given hell to people who are doing this because I am TIRED of it.

/end of rant.

“…As Michael Cohen testified, Trump once commented to him as they drove through a poor Chicago neighborhood, “only the blacks could live like this.” This is a window into to Trump’s obsession with urban blight. It is not a rousing call for better municipal governance curiously misdirected at the wrong branch of government, as he and his supporters tried to suggest in their post-tweet clean-up. It is an expression of his belief that urban poverty is a reflection of black inferiority. He is not proposing, nor do his supporters believe, that having a member of Congress spend more time in his district would meaningfully impact local conditions. He is saying that Cummings is black, the kind of person who would live that way, as a means of discredited him via his race.”

There is a reason why virtually all Libertarians are young white men. The Libertarian movement has been based entirely in countries dominated by white male rule, and Libertarianism, despite its claims to meritocracy tropes, is heavily dependent on white male social structures to ensure continued domination.

The main failure of Libertarianism as a real orthodox ideology has been its inability to separate racial and social prejudices from its economics. Libertarians are frauds, plain and simple.

If we were all somehow hatched as fully grown adults with no family or social ties, then given an education implant chip and sent off to realize our potential as individuals in a competitive society and marketplace, then Randian hyperindividualism might make some sense.

But we are born into families, social groupings and classes that very much influence our chances of succeeding. I want to live in a society that recognizes that fact and reflects it in its laws and policies.

The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill, and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children, and the children yet unborn. President Trump is expected to nominate Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) to replace Dan Coats as director of national intelligence

Shot: Trump was thrilled by Ratcliffe’s admonishment of former special counsel Robert Mueller in last week’s House Judiciary Committee hearing.

Chaser: Ratcliffe claimed that Mueller went beyond the rules for special counsels by covering instances of potential obstruction when the report did not charge any crimes. PolitiFact rated Ratcliffe’s claim false, noting that special prosecutors are required by federal regulations to explain decisions not to prosecute.

Per Axios Ratcliffe is now the front runner, though there’s been some concern that he’s too inexperienced to be confirmed.

DNI is a weird post. It was created after 9/11 and has no real authority, but is for coordinating information between all the three letter agencies. It’s an 18 hour a day job for an experienced senior intelligence leader, so this guy will be totally at sea.

At best, it means there will be an air gap between the White House and the intelligence community. The IC leadership will run rings around this guy. Considering that the White House is full of traitors, this is probably for the best.

Owsley County, Kentucky

According to the 2010 census reports, Owsley County has the second-highest level of child poverty of any county in the United States. In terms of income per household, the county is the poorest in the nation. Between 1980 and 2014, the rate of death from cancer in the county increased by 45.6 percent, the largest such increase of any county in the United States.

……..

In 2009, government benefits accounted for 53.07% of personal income.

That last extraordinary figure probably means that the rest comes from direct employment by the government, or from providing goods and services to benefits recipients. There is virtually no private economy at all.

The political history is unusual. Unlike most staunchly Republican counties in the south, Owsley was not part of the “great shift” that destroyed the Solid South in reaction to the Civil Rights movement. It has always been Republican.

Owing to its fierce Unionist sympathies, seen in the fact that the county saw a greater proportion of its population volunteer for the Union Army than any other county in Kentucky, and likely any other county in the country, Owsley County became, and has always remained, an overwhelmingly Republican county. Every Republican Presidential candidate has carried Owsley County since the party seriously contested the state for the first time in 1864. Since 1888, no Democratic candidate has received as much as forty percent of the county’s vote, and only twice (Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and Bill Clinton in 1996) have the Democrats received so much as thirty percent.

It is a tragic irony that this heritage now aligns the county with neo-confederates like McConnell and Paul.
