When my son was born at home in Virginia Beach, I called the editor of the Virginian-Pilot & Ledger-Star and asked them to run his birth in the newborns column. All they said was “we’ll have to put his birth under ‘at home, is that okay?’” It didn’t cost anything.
Does this guy know anything at all? How does he think his childrens’ birth announcements got in the paper?

I have to wonder if the so-called “never Trumpers” in the GOP and their hangers-on in the pundit class are secretly hoping Donald Trump loses the next election, without actually standing up to him.
That way they can claim “this was the wrong way to go” and move the GOP in a different direction.
I suspect they wouldn’t be able to do that. The GOP has spent half a century training their voters to be like this.

Fun fact: in 2017 California had a GDP 71% higher than Russia with a population that was only 27% of that of Russia. It’s amazing that a nation that is basically so poor has such an outsized influence on the world of today. Russia certainly has natural resources but it’s never had the leadership that could help transform the nation into a modern powerhouse; instead it is really a failed state. And Putin is the leader that Trump admires and wants to emulate.

I take anyone who says “Christian” at their word, because it’s not my place to judge who is and who isn’t.
All I think when I hear the word “Christian” in a public place is start looking for a way out, a secondary exit, &c. I can’t be certain which of them might assault me or worse over either my politics or religious views.
That goes all the way back to my earliest childhood, and my trust in a Christian is dependent on if I know that person first.
I get a lot of people here are upset with me over that attitude. It has, however, saved my neck more than once.
It’s why I compare it (though the comparison is strained a bit) with a woman who meets a man she doesn’t know anything about. You just don’t know.

I don’t like to call myself a Christian because so many of the people who claim the name make me sick. That’s the truth. I especially get unhappy whenever a prominent “professional Christian” comes out as walking away from the faith. That’s because the standard response from a lot of Christians is to push the person into the Christian airlock and vent to vacuum. There’s no room given to the person for grace and space.
This is why I regularly state that I am outside the charmed circle of the household of faith. It’s probably wrong for me to do that, because I should be accepting both the good and the bad of my fellow Christians, but I get so very, very tired of the way other Christians try to purify the flock by publicly excommunicating people. I don’t want any part of it.

Plenty of the counter-apologists on YouTube were fully immersed in their religious belief. Matt Dillahunty was in seminary. Telltale Atheist was a lay pastor. Paulogia was a Mennonite lay pastor.
Every last one in the comments section of YouTube (Twitter, but without Nazis) videos will have long screeds of preaching, paragraphs of the Bible plastered to their comments, continuous claims they were never “true Christians.”
One thing those commentators ARE doing is driving away anyone who might be considering Christianity as an adult. They see the hatred and say “no thanks.”
When my wife and I first moved here, the woman across the street from us asked us over as part of a “welcome to town” visit.
Sure, okay.
She’s from North Carolina originally. After some small talk, the Southern greeting “which church do you go to” question came out (I know that’s a Southern thing).
My wife answered her honestly, “We’re atheists.”

That was the last time we visited with her. Thankfully (for us) she no longer lives here.

Brexit is such a good example of how nationalism really is a failure of political systems to adapt to changes in the world and life (physical life, economic life). But it’s not just politicians who fail, but academia does too.

He’s not surprised.Ting (D-San Francisco), who authored a bill to ban facial recognition software from being used on police body cameras, was one of 26 California legislators who was incorrectly matched with a mug shot in a recent test of a common face-scanning program by the American Civil Liberties Union.
About 1 in 5 legislators was erroneously matched to a person who had been arrested when the ACLU used the software to screen their pictures against a database of 25,000 publicly available booking photos. A California Highway Patrol officer was killed and two others were injured after a man driving a truck that was to be impounded opened fire during a traffic stop Monday, starting a gunbattle in which he was also killed, authorities said.
The officer who pulled over the truck was shot but was able to call for assistance, Highway Patrol Assistant Chief Scott Parker said. He was later taken by air ambulance but died from his injuries, Parker said.

Trump had announced in early August that he would slap 10% tariffs on the remaining $300 billion worth of Chinese goods that had so far avoided import duties. The White House has already imposed tariffs on $250 billion worth of imports from China.
