He actually said to Bill O’Reilly “poor people put birth announcements in the paper?”
The hospital does that.
When my son was born at home in Virginia Beach, I called the editor of the Virginian-Pilot & Ledger-Star and asked them to run his birth in the newborns column. All they said was “we’ll have to put his birth under ‘at home, is that okay?’” It didn’t cost anything.
Does this guy know anything at all? How does he think his childrens’ birth announcements got in the paper?

There are estimates that Trump’s new public assistance rule to deny green cards or immigration to those using public assistance will cost tens of millions of dollars annually to enforce.
This will not improve #immigration, it will only force those already here to go hungry, get sick, & be separated from family. The cruelty is the point.

Right so you are in favor of starving the American citizen children of non-citizen parents? Do you not care about *children*? Or is this because the pain and punishment is the POINT? Rep. Biggs, you look terrible here. *scowl*
I also gave some of his regular commenters hell:

We really want to know how freaking hard-hearted you are about *children*. C’mon Rodney, tell us how much you want to harm American citizen children because of where their parents came from. *scowl*

Why are you taking these people at their word? Your experience has repeatedly shown that your definition of “good Christian” is totally alien to them.
I take anyone who says “Christian” at their word, because it’s not my place to judge who is and who isn’t.
All I think when I hear the word “Christian” in a public place is start looking for a way out, a secondary exit, &c. I can’t be certain which of them might assault me or worse over either my politics or religious views.
That goes all the way back to my earliest childhood, and my trust in a Christian is dependent on if I know that person first.
I get a lot of people here are upset with me over that attitude. It has, however, saved my neck more than once.
It’s why I compare it (though the comparison is strained a bit) with a woman who meets a man she doesn’t know anything about. You just don’t know.
re: #37 Hecuba’s daughter
Why are you taking these people at their word? Your experience has repeatedly shown that your definition of “good Christian” is totally alien to them.
I don’t like to call myself a Christian because so many of the people who claim the name make me sick. That’s the truth. I especially get unhappy whenever a prominent “professional Christian” comes out as walking away from the faith. That’s because the standard response from a lot of Christians is to push the person into the Christian airlock and vent to vacuum. There’s no room given to the person for grace and space.
This is why I regularly state that I am outside the charmed circle of the household of faith. It’s probably wrong for me to do that, because I should be accepting both the good and the bad of my fellow Christians, but I get so very, very tired of the way other Christians try to purify the flock by publicly excommunicating people. I don’t want any part of it.

Or even an “amateur Christian.” Suddenly they were “never a real Christian.”
Plenty of the counter-apologists on YouTube were fully immersed in their religious belief. Matt Dillahunty was in seminary. Telltale Atheist was a lay pastor. Paulogia was a Mennonite lay pastor.
Every last one in the comments section of YouTube (Twitter, but without Nazis) videos will have long screeds of preaching, paragraphs of the Bible plastered to their comments, continuous claims they were never “true Christians.”
One thing those commentators ARE doing is driving away anyone who might be considering Christianity as an adult. They see the hatred and say “no thanks.”
When my wife and I first moved here, the woman across the street from us asked us over as part of a “welcome to town” visit.
Sure, okay.
She’s from North Carolina originally. After some small talk, the Southern greeting “which church do you go to” question came out (I know that’s a Southern thing).
My wife answered her honestly, “We’re atheists.”
No! You can’t be that! You must REALLY mean you’re agnostics. You’ll burn in hell for that. (et cetera)
That was the last time we visited with her. Thankfully (for us) she no longer lives here.

Julie Golob, a professional sport shooter and a strong public advocate for gun rights, announced Monday she was resigning from the National Rifle Association board before the end of her three-year term.
She is the fourth member in the past two weeks to leave the board of the NRA in a sign of further upheaval within the nation’s most powerful gun rights group.
Since [Oliver] North’s departure, the organization has been roiled by allegations of self-dealing, including a report last week that LaPierre sought to have the nonprofit organization buy him a luxury mansion in 2018 after a mass shooting at a Florida high school.
Pressure has also mounted on the organization in the wake of last week’s shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso. As a chorus again demands background checks and other restrictions on firearms sales, gun-control advocates say Golob’s departure adds to the sense that the NRA is vulnerable.

Brexit is such a good example of how nationalism really is a failure of political systems to adapt to changes in the world and life (physical life, economic life). But it’s not just politicians who fail, but academia does too.
From a submitted piece in The Guardian:
It’s late in the day, but “remain and reform” campaigners could acknowledge that England’s governance needs every bit as much reform as that of the EU. Labour could set out a vision for the English nation within the union. Perceptive Liberal Democrats should understand that the voters who abandoned them for the Tories in 2015 were driven by the English interest. If England’s democratic aspirations were recognised, the English could once again become part of the mainstream political conversation from which they have been excluded for too long. Misplaced fears of English nationalism could be put back in the box.
Those words are not from a Tory-gone-Trumper, but from someone who has long ties to the Labour party. Yet the sentiment, dressed up in well constructed sentences the likes of which are beyond Trump and Trumpers, is still the same old cries of but-what-about-me!
The author is from the academic circle, the CENTRE FOR ENGLISH IDENTITY AND POLITICS
For all their academic language, and even with their probably accurate insight into how local governance in the UK and especially England is messed up, it’s still grievance theatre.
re: #66 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus
the English could once again become part of the mainstream political conversation from which they have been excluded for too long. Misplaced fears of English nationalism could be put back in the box.
It was the English vote which carried the Brexit vote. They are hardly marginalised in the United Kingdom.
Reading the page on the Oxford site it almost reads like a John Tanton AstroTurf group’s mission statement like “Numbers USA.” We’ll hide the racism in academic-sounding language.

PM Abe vows ‘full-scale’ constitutional revision debate on visit to father’s grave
[…]
Accompanied by his wife Akie, Abe offered a prayer in front of his father’s tomb in his home prefecture of Yamaguchi.
The prime minister then told the press, “I have reported (to my father) that I have achieved a victory in a national election at the beginning of the Reiwa era, and renewed my resolve that I must respond to the public mandate boldly.”
With regard to his stated goal of amending the postwar Constitution, Abe described it as “the biggest agenda since the establishment of the Liberal Democratic Party,” which he currently heads.
[…]
On the previous day, Abe attended a memorial service marking the 32nd anniversary of the death of his grandfather, former Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi, at Daionji temple in the town of Tabuse, also in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Kishi was a war criminal who spent 3 years in prison for his crimes (of his brutal rule in China).

That said, very rich people tend to make money no matter what a market is doing.
I suggested at one point that when the Pound reaches €1.05, they could then fix the exchange rate to prevent further decline, join the Currency Union and declare it the Euroguinea.
Arson?
You mean crime brulee, don’t you?
Getting back to Farage hating on Markle, the Daily Fail ran a long feature story:
[…]
Addressing a conservative conference in Australia, Mr Farage tore into the royal couple’s decision to have only two children and claimed Prince Harry’s popularity had ‘fallen off a cliff’ after meeting Meghan.
Mr Farage appeared to condone Harry dressing as a Nazi at a fancy dress party in 2005, saying he preferred the prince when he was ‘getting into trouble’ and ‘causing all sorts of mayhem’.
[…]
So what was this “conservative conference”? It was nothing less than an export from the US, the CPAC folk looking for ways to expand their reach to other countries:
Mr Farage launched the scathing attack on the royals during the three-day Sydney Conservative Political Action Conference, where media members were banned.
So what is the appeal of these throwbacks? Also at the gathering:
Tony Abbott, the Australian PM replaced by Mr Turnbull in 2015, was also at CPAC on its first day on Friday.
He described how Australia had ‘lost its anchor posts’ and said, ‘they used to be anchored in the Christian faith. Faith is a gift, some people have, some people don’t.’
I keep repeating myself here… the loss-of-God problem is key to the surge of the attraction to the new fascism, which uses nostalgic appeals to the good old days, and among the most powerful of these appeals is to the old (now outdated) belief systems.
The QAnon grift-a-thon is ramping up big time:
On Sept 14, Atlanta will host the QAnon-themed “Digital Soldiers Conference.” Speakers allegedly include QAnon pushers Bill Mitchell, Joy Villa, and Rich Granville. Also: George Papadopoulos and General Flynn.

As soon as “Trending on Twitter” became a news item in and of itself, I began to despair for the future of the Republic.
People like Breitbart, Drudge and now QAnon were among the first to understand that they just have to float bullshit out there long enough and it will develop legs and get picked up and discussed by the MSM as if it had some validity.
Now “Clinton Witness Removal” is out there nicely distracting us from Trump’s own personal connection to the dead child molester.

Not only that, but when photos or vids of Trump and Epstein together are posted, Trump’s cultists are crying “Fake news!” or “It’s a deepfake!” or something to that effect.
Like any cult, they’re blatantly refusing to see what’s evident to all and sundry. If Trump loses next year (knock on wood) they’re going to be in a state of disbelief and shock - probably similar to the Great Disappointment. And I have little doubt that some of them, hopefully a tiny minority of them, may well react violently to such a loss, viewing it as either nothing less than a personal attack upon themselves or the beginnings of a “deep state coup d’etat” being put into action.

Poland meets its 2% of GDP spending obligation towards NATO. Germany does not. We would welcome American troops in Germany to come to Poland.

Personally, I’m hoping that just enough of the Fundies will choose to sit it out next year that Trump and the GOP lose big. They’re definitely a hardcore voting bloc, but if enough of them decide to stay home, it’d be enough to tip the balance in close races.

Pence is their point man, ever since Reagan threw them under the bus, they have been insinuating their people into all levels of public life; education, public administration, the Military, etc., and now they have one of their own positioned only a dicky heartbeat away from the Presidency.

Somebody gets to stand in front of an armored column.
Win Cramer had big plans to hire several new employees this summer for his company, including a chief operating officer, but he took the job listings down after President Trump tweeted that more tariffs would hit Chinese goods in September.
Trump’s escalating trade war has spooked business executives. There’s already been a noticeable decline in business investment as corporate leaders say Trump’s tariffs and unpredictability are creating too much uncertainty, dissuading them from spending large sums on new buildings or equipment. Now there are early signs that business leaders are beginning to pull back on hiring, too.
“It’s the most frustrating time I’ve ever had running a business, and I’ve been doing this for 20 years,” said Cramer, chief executive of JLab Audio, which makes wireless ear buds and headphones that are sold at Best Buy, Target and elsewhere.
Trump’s gas lighting continues apace.
Americans pay the tariffs. Not China. Not Mexico.
Americans. It is the actual definition of tariff. All you do is lie and gaslight with tiki torches for your white nationalist base.

True. 50% of the bailout went to just 10% of the businesses - aka agribusinesses that are major producers, not the family farmers who’d go bankrupt with the inability to move their product.

As I’ve noted before, these are bailouts that we can expect to continue past 2020. Those markets that our farmers relied upon have either been closed to them or severely depreciated such that product is simply rotting away in storage. The situation will not magically reverse itself in Jan 2021, so we can expect the next round of bailouts to suddenly be a means by which the GOP tries desperately to mend fences with their rural base.

on topic, electoral-vote.com this AM has a 4 part mini-series on this very thing
“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain,” because the party’s actions today
have nothing to do with their stated platform, nor the things they’ve been screaming that they were ‘for’ for the last 100 years
it’ll take you 5 minutes to read about
- immigrants
- upward mobility
- regulations
- conservation
the conclusion:
With that said, it is striking how often, and how overtly, the actions of Donald Trump and his administration run contrary to the stated platform of the Party and, more importantly, to the GOP’s longstanding core principles. And we only brought up the things that came up in the last week or so; we didn’t even touch on subjects like the Republicans’ newfound disregard for exploding the deficit, or for reining in Russia, or for partnering with the nation’s longstanding European allies.
So, we conclude where we started: This is a Party with a serious identity problem. They are holding on to some past idea of what the GOP is, at least for “smoke and mirrors” purposes, but they most certainly aren’t that party anymore.
Somebody tell the cops…
Facial recognition software mistook 1 in 5 California lawmakers for criminals, says ACLU.
SACRAMENTO — California Assemblyman Phil Ting has never been arrested, but he was recently mistaken for a criminal.
He’s not surprised.Ting (D-San Francisco), who authored a bill to ban facial recognition software from being used on police body cameras, was one of 26 California legislators who was incorrectly matched with a mug shot in a recent test of a common face-scanning program by the American Civil Liberties Union.
About 1 in 5 legislators was erroneously matched to a person who had been arrested when the ACLU used the software to screen their pictures against a database of 25,000 publicly available booking photos. Last year, in a similar experiment done with photos of members of Congress, the software erroneously matched 28 federal legislators with mug shots.

Funny, because I have a lot of principles that I would even call “conservative”. I like free markets, personal responsibility and individual initiative.
But I want markets that benefit everyone, not just the major players.
And I want a government that is responsible for its people’s well being. All of them, and not just the big donors.
And as much as I like individual initiative, I have no problem with people banding together to maximize their bargaining power, be that as unions, consumer organizations, political action groups and not just as investors in corporations.
And as for family values, I value families. Families who need strong schools and sound civic organizations in order to thrive. They need a living wage and working conditions that leave time to raise and nurture families and offer our children a chance to succeed.

To the GOP, Free Markets means that corporations determine the rules of the marketplace.
Personal Responsibility means that if you are a single mother, a disability or any sort of pre-existing condition, that is your own problem.
Individual Initiative means that you as an individual have the right to bargain one-on-one for terms of employment, insurance coverage and financial services with multi-billion-dollar international corporations and banks.
And Family Values means no gay marriage, sex education, contraception and of course DEATH PENALTY FOR ABORTION!!!
All that ass-kissing for nothing.

Incumbents have tremendous advantages, even if they’re white supremacists and bigots whose racism and bigotry are well documented (see King, Steven; Scalise, Steve; and Trump, Donald).
Trump being underwater in polls is good and all, but look at state level polls only, and once we get down to who Trump actually will face in November 2020, can we begin to truly assess his chances.
After all, WH incumbents have pretty much won all but a handful of times in the past 50 years: Carter, and GHWB being two exceptions.

Moscow (CNN) - Residents of a Russian village near the site of a suspected explosion of a nuclear-powered missile have been told to evacuate, Russian state news agency RIA-Novosti reported, citing a local official.
Villagers were asked to leave Nyonoksa on Wednesday morning due to planned military activities, RIA reported Tuesday, citing Ksenia Yudina, head of the press service of the Severodvinsk administration.
Local news portal tv29.ru reported that Nyonoksa would be evacuated by train between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Wednesday. The settlement is approximately 30 miles from the port city of Severodvinsk.

Harry Enten: “President Donald Trump’s chief problem heading into the 2020 campaign can be boiled down to ‘like him on the economy, but not overall.’ Aggregating our last three CNN polls, Trump has a 44% approval rating and 52% disapproval rating among voters. On the economy, it’s been the inverse: 53% approval and 42% disapproval.”
“If 2020 turns out to be a referendum on Trump’s overall performance, he’s an underdog. Trump, though, would up his odds significantly by winning over half of the 9% of voters who like him on the economy but not overall — and he would be a clear favorite if he won the votes of all those who approved of him on the economy but not overall.”
and that’s never gonna happen because, well have you watched his performance these last three years? he cant all of a sudden ‘pivot’ have it be taken seriously and get an effect that big that fast.

We’ve already moved on. It’s Epstein now — gun control is so last week.
CHP officer killed, other officers injured, when a suspect pulled over opened fire.
A California Highway Patrol officer was killed and two others were injured after a man driving a truck that was to be impounded opened fire during a traffic stop Monday, starting a gunbattle in which he was also killed, authorities said.
The officer who pulled over the truck was shot but was able to call for assistance, Highway Patrol Assistant Chief Scott Parker said. He was later taken by air ambulance but died from his injuries, Parker said.
Two other highway patrol officers were wounded in the gunbattle, he said.
“It was a long and horrific gunbattle,” Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz said at a news conference Monday night.
The shooter’s family said the man was depressed and dealing with medical issues. Red flag? You bet.
Again, cops bear the brunt of easy availability of guns - even in strong gun law states, because they’re dealing with people who may try suicide by cop, have intent to cause mass shootings, domestic violence, and routine traffic stops that can turn into killing fields.
Strong gun control nationally would help improve safety and put teeth into the empty words that “blue lives matter”. Funny how we don’t hear about blue lives mattering unless someone mentions black lives. Weird that. It was always a dodge and deflection from racism and racial discrimination, when the reality is easy availability of guns puts cops in mortal peril.
The easy availability of guns is killing cops. It’s killing thousands across the national every year.

DT’s supporters are isolationists. Isolationists hate foreign entanglements. Therefore it’s not a good idea to start a war.
This far into his term, a foreign attack would be “on his watch,” and only the most hardcore of his supporters (17% is the number of US evangelicals) wouldn’t blame him.

Let’s remember: it’s not as though Frank Luntz has a real ideology or believed in anything. He’s a gun for hire who hitched himself to the Republican party, not because he cared about anything (except maybe tax cuts for the wealthy).
re: #269 DangerMan
and that is such a long, far and heavy lift that until then my opinion is that we concede everything:
- the current, bizarre interpretation of the 2A
- bans
- databases
- mandatory training and retraining
- insuranceinstead focus on:
- “control your weapons at all times” as the only thing that matters
- lose your freedom, finances and future 2A rights when you don’t
- ‘control’ includes temporary or permanent sale, trade, transfer, or loanbecause:
- every right comes with responsibilities
- the goal is to cull those who demonstrate they cannot or will not control their weaponry at all times (which will never be you, right?)
Take half a loaf, if it serves the need. I’m so liberal I know it would probably be a bad thing if I ever got everything I want.

Interesting article on Jehovah’s Witnesses. I know some Christian groups do not consider them to be Christian but they seem to be more tolerant than the evangelicals about others, and except for their fanaticism about blood, they don’t reject modern medicine.
They don’t pledge the flag, because it’s idolatry.
They don’t vote because… okay, I’m confused about the why for this one, even after having it explained to me repeatedly, but it’s real. They don’t vote.
re: #244 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
I remember somebody from Miami saying that the farther north you go in Florida, the more southern things get…
West of Tallahassee, it’s South Alabama (don’t get me wrong, I love driving down to PCB every chance I get, but outside the PCB city limits northward, it’s a whole lotta nothing between it and Dothan); east of Tallahassee and north of Orlando, it’s South Georgia (I suppose you could also say that about the interior of the Panhandle that’s ringed by Orlando, Tampa, Miami and the other Panhandle coastal cities as well, especially in and around the Everglades).
re: #256 A hollow voice says, Inpeach…
DT’s supporters are isolationists. Isolationists hate foreign entanglements. Therefore it’s not a good idea to start a war.
This far into his term, a foreign attack would be “on his watch,” and only the most hardcore of his supporters (17% is the number of US evangelicals) wouldn’t blame him.
Unless of course it was related to a terror attack on US soil

A lot can happen between now and the election. During a lunchtime walk with my manager in the summer of 1991, he repeated the conventional wisdom that Bush 41 was a shoe-in after the success of our first Gulf War — none of the well known Democrats were willing to take him on. It seems that Trump has delayed some tariffs: cnbc.com
Trump had announced in early August that he would slap 10% tariffs on the remaining $300 billion worth of Chinese goods that had so far avoided import duties. The White House has already imposed tariffs on $250 billion worth of imports from China.
China, which had already put retaliatory tariffs on $110 billion worth of U.S. imports, responded to the most recent threat by canceling all purchases of U.S. agriculture products.
The White House’s move to back off on the hard and fast date for the new tariffs came as a sigh of relief for markets, which have been increasingly on edge amid the intensifying trade war between Beijing and Washington. Major indexes, which had been trading in the red before the market open, shot up on the news.

60+ million people are.
Come on, who wouldn’t respond positively to such a positive, welcoming message of positivity? https://t.co/pjPm27hJEE

Mike nails it.
Putin could send 100,000 men into Ukraine. We’d do nothing. Kim could send a million man army across the 38th parallel. We’d do nothing. China could seize Hong Kong and bombard Taiwan. We’d do nothing.
Someone is going to realize this sooner rather than later.— Mike Rothschild (@rothschildmd) August 13, 2019
re: #366 William Lewis
I’m liking the Warren-Buttigieg combo more and more. I’d really rather see both Castro & O’Rourke in the senate.
We need a PoC imo. And I really like Beto’s humanity. I really think Julian or Beto could help us in the SW ie Texas and Arizona. I think Hegar could beat Cornyn.

OMG, Trump’s comments about HK and China.

they voted for him sure
when i say ‘buying it’ - how many could find Hong Kong on a map or explain the current situation?
re: #370 Belafon
To quote another Texan(dailykos.com):
I’m in for Hegar. I still think Beto’s strong place would be VP.
Beto or Julian would be great for VP. Their Spanish fluency and personalities could really help in your neck.

I give a slight edge to Beto over Julian in campaigning in Texas because of Beto’s run last year. I don’t think Latinos will need a Latino to get out the vote, just someone who takes them seriously.
But I believe both of them will be canvassing the state hard next year, no matter who’s actually the nominee.

When mrs. dm and i were courting in 2008 (a long long story) we lived 1500 miles apart.
She commuted on a subway. We didnt see each other a lot so it was all phone, email, etc. She would send emails that were one long run on paragraph. She’d hold on to a pole with one hand, the blackberry with the other and type with her thumb. I said her style reminded me of jack kerouac. it stuck. We’ve been jack and danger ever since.
Accusers of Jeffrey Epstein are asking a federal court in Florida to tear up Epstein’s 2007 non-prosecution agreement that not only shielded Epstein from further prosecution, but also protected his alleged co-conspirators, ABC News reports. https://t.co/ZnY7grzfjx

True. I do like that Julian has the Washington and exec experience that said.

Oh absolutely. They’ll be instrumental.

It’s always the same stupid bs, we’re watching, we’ll see. No one says more by saying less than Trump if you catch my drift.

I detest Pompeo and Bolton with the fire of a thousand suns, but would bombs-away Bolton actually stand idly by while China invades Taiwan or Putin invades Ukraine or Kim invades South Korea? It’s more likely we will end up in some devastating conflict that ends the world.
re: #340 The Pie Overlord!
It’s not a joke any more. He really expects to become “President For Life”

I’m sorry, but I’d be more forgiving—&willing to believe the intent—of a “just joking” justification from someone slinging the N-word, and if it were anyone I know personally besides my father (who can leave me homeless, with no other source of a roof), I’d still cut THEM off!

Did she ever send you a love-letter on a roll of teletype paper ?
