Oct. 15, 2019 | Bob Boilen — From the moment Brittany Howard walked into the NPR offices, I could sense her intense commitment and passion. Her eight-piece backing band, all decked out in red and black, played with a soulful subtlety that bolstered Brittany Howard’s tender songs about her family — stories of a mixed-race child growing up in Alabama.

All the songs performed at the Tiny Desk come from Jaime, an album Brittany Howard dedicated to her sister who died at the age of 13 from a rare form of eye cancer, the same disease that has left Brittany Howard partially blind in one eye. On these songs (and in particular at this Tiny Desk Concert), there is more nuance than I’ve heard in Brittany’s past projects, including her work with Alabama Shakes and Thunderbitch. The music has a sense of wonder and playfulness, even when the subject is heavy, as in “Georgia.” She tells the audience that it’s a tale of “a little young, black, gay girl having a crush on an older black girl and not knowing what to say and how I was feeling.”

Brittany Howard knows how to tell a story, to foster empathy and understanding and, in this intimate setting, the songs feel at home. The connection with the audience felt visceral as I looked around the room and into the eyes of my workmates and their friends. Even a small child in the arms of their parent screamed at the appropriate moment during the climax of Brittany’s song, “Baby.” It gave us all a good laugh just when the weight of the words felt the heaviest.

Really annoying — twice today while listening to MSNBC, I heard attorneys (not sure who they were) who both said that they had been in favor of Barr’s appointment because they thought he was an institutionalist but they now realize that their judgement had been in error. Really? Were they actually blind to Barr’s actions as AG under 41? Did none of these experts read Barr’s audition letter for the position?? I am always flabbergasted when people who are reputed to be experts seem too willing to accept someone at face value because of their paper credentials.

Better late than ever I guess. But yes qualifications are one thing. But Barr did not show a willingness to act as something other than a hack. It’s honestly the good old boy network. The same reason why a lot of people defended Kavanaugh even before Dr. Ford came forward.

So today Amazon was supposed to deliver a package… but left it somewhere else, certainly not here.

Anyway, I wanted to call Amazon and talk to somehow about how worthless the tracking information was (there is a photo but totally non-informative)… and the aggravating thing is, as always, trying to use Amazon’s website to find the right number is worthless.

So the delivery person apparently tried to leave a message on my phone, but didn’t, yet since I had the number called it and it was an Amazon machine which gave me the magic words to Google to find the information, which Google has, on which number to call.

Sure, Amazon readily refunds, but I wonder how less expensive goods from Amazon would be if they didn’t mess up millions of packages every year?

The leader of an anti-immigrant group was arrested by Surprise police on suspicion of identity theft, according to court records and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Jennifer M. Harrison, 42, was booked into jail by Surprise police on Oct. 24 on one count of taking the identity of another, a Class 4 felony, said Sgt. Bryant Vanegas, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

When she was arrested and transferred to a Surprise police station, she told officers she was innocent and did not cooperate with police, the court document says.

“Jennifer created a scene at the PD (police department) and in the booking room because she believes she is above the law and does not want to be treated like a criminal,” the document says.

Night all, from just south of Alpine, Texas, where our road trip to get the band back together has resulted in a gig at the Richie Hotel tomorrow. It’s the oldest surviving railroad hotel in Texas. The landscape here, by the way, is absolutely spectacular. Spent the day at the McDonald Observatory and Marfa, and it was absolutely fantastic, with unlimited views of over 40 miles.

If you haven’t put the Big Bend on your bucket list, you should absolutely do so. There is nothing else like it in the US.

Another thing to consider is that salt water has about 20% less capacity to hold dissolved oxygen than fresh water, and added heat further reduces the amount it can hold. So it’s more of a concern in a reef tank just because of those two factors alone.

You know, I grew up for a time going to a super evangelical southern baptist church that had literally every Jack Chick tract in publication at the time available. (Unfortunately this was before some his more thoughtful, literary discussions of D&D and heavy metal music, so we were limited to more mundane subjects like “the pope is the antichrist” and “credit cards/ social security numbers are the mark of the beast.”)

And even with all that, when I see people talking about being “prayer warriors” wielding “spiritual weapons pf prayer” against demonic forces and what not, I’m just completely bewildered that anyone could listen to that and not break down in laughter.

I mean, really- you think The Almighty’s entire plan is to make Trump King of America, but he just can’t unless you mumble some nonsense to yourself before drifting off to sleep? Or is it some sort of volume deal, where if you think really, really hard about God doing the thing he’s supposedly already wants to do anyway for a couple of hours a day, he’ll suddenly remember that today is Tuesday, and he needs to quit all his loafing around get that pet project started?

It’s just such a ridiculous and limiting view: a supreme being who desperately needs you to badger him into putting down the video game controller and start doing his chores like a recalcitrant teen or something. And YOU are the only one who can make him! So weird.

(Not saying all religion suffers from this obsession- but man, some of the evangelicals in this country have a really poor opinion about gods ability to be a self starting go-getter.)

I ripped an anti-abortion Christian a new asshole over this today. It started out with this woman pontificating about how awful abortion was on a third person’s FB. I stepped up and said, “I’ll defend abortion”—and then I went on an epic rant, saying that women alone should make the decision on abortion, pointing out that women still got abortions when abortions were illegal, and that Evangelical Christians had a very bad habit of not wanting to feed, clothe and house the poor among us.

This woman came back with “well, I send money to feed orphans in Ghana and send money to build wells and you should apologize but you won’t.” My response was to point out how she liked her poor out of sight, out of mind, how her anti-abortion stance was essentially slavery and that no, of course I wasn’t going to apologize to her.

Tulsi Gabbard. I’ve probably missed some posts about her as I’ve been involved in medical issues and can’t keep up here. Obviously, I’m not an active poster, but I know I’m not the only Hawaii resident here, which is a nice change from other forums.

Today I got a call about who I would support to run for Tulsi’s seat. Gak. The 3 choices were ok, but two had no real experience beyond a minimal state level while we at a dangerous point for the future of our country. I said we needed someone who understood that Tulsi was actively splintering the Dems and be ready to counter it.

I was pissed off that the caller, a known DNC election operative, had no idea what had been going on. I point out her continuing slamming of Hillary, a divisive move to splinter the Dems, especially the Bernie peeps. Also he didn’t know that HRC didn’t say the Russians were grooming her, but that the GOP was - successfully since after her video announcement she ran to Faux News. He didn’t know that RT was the first to post on twitter about her statement. I provided a link. He didn’t know that Russian media had been promoting her for some time. Referred him to Julia Davis.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

And I can understand why Kennedy is pissed: if the Democrats are trying to “control the narrative”, they’re doing a pretty good job of it so far: Republican defenders of The Orange One have pretty much been reduced to repeating his basic “defense”: I.e. sputtering denial, insincere self-pitying victimization, and puerile insults.

Also: I really like Ted Lieu, and wish a lot more Democrats in Congress were like him.

That makes Trump an unindicted coconspirator who should have been indicted but for DOJ policy (which the next POTUS must eviscerate and eliminate to make sure that no one is above justice and the rule of law - especially the president). They could point the American people away from the toxicity that has come to infect American political life, and remind us that we are not two countries seeking disparate futures, but one people experimenting with different means to the same end.

A Romney-Gabbard ticket is a long shot. But it is a plausible long shot. And a long shot is increasingly what America needs. The ticket would not make the party faithful on either side of the aisle happy, but why should they be the final arbiters of who ascends to the presidency? Mitt Romney should pick Tulsi Gabbard.

They agree on little politically, but that is a benefit. A Romney-Gabbard ticket could be based, legitimately, on decency, truthfulness and honor. They could point the American people away from the toxicity that has come to infect American political life, and remind us that we are not two countries seeking disparate futures, but one people experimenting with different means to the same end.

Romney can be dusted off and sold as representing the Human Face of conservatism, but he stands for the same shit that the GOP has always been for.

Gabbard would be sold as embodiment of the True Left, untainted by Clintonist corruption.

On the hand, the GOP has to come up with a Plan B should Trump really lose it and crash and burn before 2020

And this sounds like the most plausible one they could come up with given what they have to work with

Trump is cash poor. He’s been cash poor for most of his professional life. He has to keep up appearances because he runs things using other people’s money as much as possible.

Selling the Trump DC would free up funds for him to squander elsewhere to keep up appearances.

The whole reason they started the Foundation was to avoid taxes. When taxes went down, they stopped putting their income into it. (reminder: the Ford family wasn’t “earning” much of that money by the 1950’s; they were still pulling most of that income from long-dead Grandpa’s long-ago work).

Maybe we don’t talk about it because it’s obvious, but…

…Donald Trump Jr’s ability to get meetings with and take photo ops with both elected GOP officials and the pundit infrastructure of the GOP is the naked representation of how this whole fucking system is corrupt and based on implicit networks…good ‘ole boys and back room discussions…even as the participants crow about conspiracy and plotting.

There actually is a deep state of sorts…it’s just not the normal administrative state that the wingnuts are calling the “deep state.” It’s the social network of people and orgs with capital that coordinate behind the scenes to keep cash flowing towards their coffers. At the top level, this is the contractors and corporations that keep getting allocating money to do government work, who hire all the retiring generals and congressmen. “Pork” is something we’ve become accustomed to…and in particular, spending in the military-industrial complex for the sake of propping it up. Not even a wry joke anymore, just an inevitability. Yet it’s the basis of the kinds of behind-the-scenes understanding that are creating these bigger, much more dangerous systems of power distribution that are opaque and have no oversight.

Right now a lot of folks are doing Marxism-based critiques of how capital skews government, because capital always wants more…but this is generally presented as “more money, because money is an end unto itself.” This isn’t wrong, but it’s important to observe that part of that Charybdis-like vortex of “more” is weakening legal and societal norms of accountability. The goal is not just to have more purchasing power, but to be able to use that purchasing power without repercussion, more and more broadly defining what is possible with power on both the individual and organizational level.

Which, to me, best explains the coalition of bastards we’re facing: at top you’ve got plutocrats that want to be old school oligarchs; there’s also the ideologues that ultimately believe in their entitlement to tell other people what to do (updated daily, with carve-outs from morality for the leadership, as necessary); and at the bottom, you’ve got the people who don’t expect to prosper, but are willing to go along because the get license to be cruel assholes and sometimes lash out to ritually re-assert the status quo that they’re allowed to be cruel assholes.

And that’s both the malady of the nation and the world.
