Oct. 15, 2019 | Bob Boilen — From the moment Brittany Howard walked into the NPR offices, I could sense her intense commitment and passion. Her eight-piece backing band, all decked out in red and black, played with a soulful subtlety that bolstered Brittany Howard’s tender songs about her family — stories of a mixed-race child growing up in Alabama.

All the songs performed at the Tiny Desk come from Jaime, an album Brittany Howard dedicated to her sister who died at the age of 13 from a rare form of eye cancer, the same disease that has left Brittany Howard partially blind in one eye. On these songs (and in particular at this Tiny Desk Concert), there is more nuance than I’ve heard in Brittany’s past projects, including her work with Alabama Shakes and Thunderbitch. The music has a sense of wonder and playfulness, even when the subject is heavy, as in “Georgia.” She tells the audience that it’s a tale of “a little young, black, gay girl having a crush on an older black girl and not knowing what to say and how I was feeling.”

Brittany Howard knows how to tell a story, to foster empathy and understanding and, in this intimate setting, the songs feel at home. The connection with the audience felt visceral as I looked around the room and into the eyes of my workmates and their friends. Even a small child in the arms of their parent screamed at the appropriate moment during the climax of Brittany’s song, “Baby.” It gave us all a good laugh just when the weight of the words felt the heaviest.

SET LIST
“Stay High”
“Georgia”
“Baby”
“Goat Head”

Really annoying — twice today while listening to MSNBC, I heard attorneys (not sure who they were) who both said that they had been in favor of Barr’s appointment because they thought he was an institutionalist but they now realize that their judgement had been in error. Really? Were they actually blind to Barr’s actions as AG under 41? Did none of these experts read Barr’s audition letter for the position?? I am always flabbergasted when people who are reputed to be experts seem too willing to accept someone at face value because of their paper credentials.

TBH how cool for an immigrant to this country throw out a first pitch at a World Series game for his home city. Baseball is always been full of immigrants and the children of them.

Better late than ever I guess. But yes qualifications are one thing. But Barr did not show a willingness to act as something other than a hack. It’s honestly the good old boy network. The same reason why a lot of people defended Kavanaugh even before Dr. Ford came forward.

So today Amazon was supposed to deliver a package… but left it somewhere else, certainly not here.

Anyway, I wanted to call Amazon and talk to somehow about how worthless the tracking information was (there is a photo but totally non-informative)… and the aggravating thing is, as always, trying to use Amazon’s website to find the right number is worthless.

So the delivery person apparently tried to leave a message on my phone, but didn’t, yet since I had the number called it and it was an Amazon machine which gave me the magic words to Google to find the information, which Google has, on which number to call.

Sure, Amazon readily refunds, but I wonder how less expensive goods from Amazon would be if they didn’t mess up millions of packages every year?

So, trump jr plans to sell the DC trump hotel for $500 million.

Didn’t know they bought it….since it’s under lease from the GSA (US General Services Administration. Yah, that’s the landlord for all US Government property.

Did trump sell it to himself?

Or, just another classic “bait and switch”.

Well here’s another RepubliKKKlan who got caught!

The leader of an anti-immigrant group was arrested by Surprise police on suspicion of identity theft, according to court records and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Jennifer M. Harrison, 42, was booked into jail by Surprise police on Oct. 24 on one count of taking the identity of another, a Class 4 felony, said Sgt. Bryant Vanegas, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

When she was arrested and transferred to a Surprise police station, she told officers she was innocent and did not cooperate with police, the court document says.

“Jennifer created a scene at the PD (police department) and in the booking room because she believes she is above the law and does not want to be treated like a criminal,” the document says.

Yes, and there will be a certain chef, I forget his name, he fed of thousands of disaster victims in Purto Rico and Bermuda, making international disaster relief organizations look like absolute pikers, and was nominated for a Nobel Prize, who will be throwing out the first pitch in Game 5.

Oh, and the Drumpf, who hates him, will post a tweet to destroy him to the public. Because that is what he does.

Night all, from just south of Alpine, Texas, where our road trip to get the band back together has resulted in a gig at the Richie Hotel tomorrow. It’s the oldest surviving railroad hotel in Texas. The landscape here, by the way, is absolutely spectacular. Spent the day at the McDonald Observatory and Marfa, and it was absolutely fantastic, with unlimited views of over 40 miles.

If you haven’t put the Big Bend on your bucket list, you should absolutely do so. There is nothing else like it in the US.

Night all, sweet dreams.

I get an alert through the Ecotech Reeflink whenever the main power to the aquarium fails

OK- at the sake of sounding stupid- why is this such a concern?

Admittedly, it’s been years since I had a tank over 5-10 gallons (fresh water, mostly for various shrimp, small fish and other small invertebrates) but even when I had 30-50 gallons, I don’t ever recall having any kind of issues with a limited power-outage- to the extent that the conversation around these blackouts is really the first time I ever considered it at all.

A blackout can kill a well stocked reef tank in just a few hours. The fish and coral respiration will suck up the oxygen and without circulation to drive constant gas exchange at the surface and distribution to all levels of the tank the livestock will die. You don’t need heavy flow, just enough to keep everything moving. That’s where the Ecotech setup shines, the return pump and powerhead conrollers have separate DC inputs for backup power off the battery, so they know when they’re on reserve and can be set to run at reduced speed to extend the backup time.

Another thing to consider is that salt water has about 20% less capacity to hold dissolved oxygen than fresh water, and added heat further reduces the amount it can hold. So it’s more of a concern in a reef tank just because of those two factors alone.

You know, I grew up for a time going to a super evangelical southern baptist church that had literally every Jack Chick tract in publication at the time available. (Unfortunately this was before some his more thoughtful, literary discussions of D&D and heavy metal music, so we were limited to more mundane subjects like “the pope is the antichrist” and “credit cards/ social security numbers are the mark of the beast.”)

And even with all that, when I see people talking about being “prayer warriors” wielding “spiritual weapons pf prayer” against demonic forces and what not, I’m just completely bewildered that anyone could listen to that and not break down in laughter.

I mean, really- you think The Almighty’s entire plan is to make Trump King of America, but he just can’t unless you mumble some nonsense to yourself before drifting off to sleep? Or is it some sort of volume deal, where if you think really, really hard about God doing the thing he’s supposedly already wants to do anyway for a couple of hours a day, he’ll suddenly remember that today is Tuesday, and he needs to quit all his loafing around get that pet project started?

It’s just such a ridiculous and limiting view: a supreme being who desperately needs you to badger him into putting down the video game controller and start doing his chores like a recalcitrant teen or something. And YOU are the only one who can make him! So weird.

(Not saying all religion suffers from this obsession- but man, some of the evangelicals in this country have a really poor opinion about gods ability to be a self starting go-getter.)

I ripped an anti-abortion Christian a new asshole over this today. It started out with this woman pontificating about how awful abortion was on a third person’s FB. I stepped up and said, “I’ll defend abortion”—and then I went on an epic rant, saying that women alone should make the decision on abortion, pointing out that women still got abortions when abortions were illegal, and that Evangelical Christians had a very bad habit of not wanting to feed, clothe and house the poor among us.

This woman came back with “well, I send money to feed orphans in Ghana and send money to build wells and you should apologize but you won’t.” My response was to point out how she liked her poor out of sight, out of mind, how her anti-abortion stance was essentially slavery and that no, of course I wasn’t going to apologize to her.

Today I got a call about who I would support to run for Tulsi’s seat. Gak. The 3 choices were ok, but two had no real experience beyond a minimal state level while we at a dangerous point for the future of our country. I said we needed someone who understood that Tulsi was actively splintering the Dems and be ready to counter it.

I was pissed off that the caller, a known DNC election operative, had no idea what had been going on. I point out her continuing slamming of Hillary, a divisive move to splinter the Dems, especially the Bernie peeps. Also he didn’t know that HRC didn’t say the Russians were grooming her, but that the GOP was - successfully since after her video announcement she ran to Faux News. He didn’t know that RT was the first to post on twitter about her statement. I provided a link. He didn’t know that Russian media had been promoting her for some time. Referred him to Julia Davis.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

If you want to practice a policy of deterrence, that is one thing, I disagree vehemently but can at least understand the point of it - with adults. But making children the victims of such a policy is absolutely inhumane.

you dont want to participate, to mount a ‘defense’ - as it were - or ask questions that would exonerate (because, perfect), that’s on you.

it’s a hell of a strategy. wonder what cotton would think.

investigations dont always turn up evidence of provable crime - especially when it’s hidden or withheld through shenanigans or trickery, or (gasp) lying.

you would have had a better, but still wrong point by merely saying the investigation failed, not that because it ‘failed’ it must somehow be ‘illegal’

Mueller explicitly wrote that had evidence not been withheld, they might have reached different conclusions. Trump himself declined to be interviewed & submitted written answers we later learned were incomplete or untruthful in some cases.

There is no way Trump could testify under oath without perjuring himself or contradicting other sworn testimony…

Where’s the Whistleblower? Probably in hiding because he/she knows that they’ll be exiled to fucking Siberia, you tangerine wankmaggot!

The attorneys representing the Whistle blower says their testimony is no longer needed:

Our client’s whistleblower complaint about President Trump’s efforts to solicit interference from Ukraine in the 2020 U.S. election was publicly released a month ago, and since then, speculation about the whistleblower’s identity has only increased. As each allegation in the complaint is substantiated by new witnesses, the president and his supporters remain fanatically devoted to bringing our client into the spotlight. But the reality is that the identity of the whistleblower is irrelevant.

In August, our client lawfully filed a detailed complaint that prompted the intelligence community inspector general to conduct a preliminary investigation. That inquiry, which involved multiple witnesses — all of whom are also lawfully protected as whistleblowers — led to a finding that the complaint was both “urgent” and “credible” and was legally required to be transmitted to Congress.

Over the past month, we have all learned more facts — from the White House’s summarized transcript of the July call with Ukraine’s president, from text messages provided to the House of Representatives by the former U.S. special representative for Ukraine, and from congressional testimony by people intimately involved with the circumstances the whistleblower first raised concern about. Much of what has been disclosed since the release of our client’s complaint actually exceeds the whistleblower’s knowledge of what transpired at the time the complaint was submitted. Because our client has no additional information about the president’s call, there is no justification for exposing their identity and all the risks that would follow.

Trump’s transition chair and first NSA took a plea deal. Flynn
Trump’s personal lawyer took deal in felony crimes that implicated him in federal felonies. Cohen.

That makes Trump an unindicted coconspirator who should have been indicted but for DOJ policy (which the next POTUS must eviscerate and eliminate to make sure that no one is above justice and the rule of law - especially the president). New rules must be put in place where if any actions implicate the POTUS, AG, or top officials in felony crimes, a special prosecutor who cannot have their investigation ended by the WH or AG must be seated and allowed to investigate and recommend charges to the applicable district courts.

Romney-Gabbard, Make America Decent Again

hahahahaha!

Mitt Romney should pick Tulsi Gabbard.

They agree on little politically, but that is a benefit. A Romney-Gabbard ticket could be based, legitimately, on decency, truthfulness and honor. They could point the American people away from the toxicity that has come to infect American political life, and remind us that we are not two countries seeking disparate futures, but one people experimenting with different means to the same end.

A Romney-Gabbard ticket is a long shot. But it is a plausible long shot. And a long shot is increasingly what America needs. The ticket would not make the party faithful on either side of the aisle happy, but why should they be the final arbiters of who ascends to the presidency? It’s time to make America decent again, and this may be the best way to accomplish that difficult goal.

My former bosses are back to fighting that same old fight: Twisted Sister really wants Fox & Friends to stop using their music.

Not everyone agrees that the 1984 rock hit is the “perfect song” for a Brooks Brothers riot remix entailing 47 Republican congressmen, including noted dim bulb Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), busting in on a deposition taking place well within the established House rules. First and foremost, Twisted Sister themselves take issue with Fox News’ use of their song.

“While our song ‘Were Not Gonna Take It’ is the most famous anthem worldwide for many disparate groups, we do not support the Republican agenda,” the band said in a statement issued to SPIN via manager and founding Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French. “Uses of this kind are nearly impossible to stop, but sadly, some fans may feel that we either approved of it’s use or were paid to have it used.”

The statement continued: “We have absolutely not received a request for use of our song, not received any compensation and, more importantly, we do not approve or endorse the antics pulled off by these rogue congressmen who violated House rules with a cheap political stunt at this stage of the inquiry.”

You know, it’s weird to hear a rock guitarist make more sense than a bunch of idiot congressmen (and one congresswoman).

French is a very smart dude. A lot more cerebral than you’d give a metal guitarist credit for.

He’s a good guy, but Jay Jay is the flaming liberal of the band.

Fun fact: Jay Jay’s mom was a leading NY Dem, and was NY State chairwoman of JFK’s presidential run.

That’s awesome.

Just no. No one asked for either Mitt or Tulsi.

Gotta have some smarts to play guitar. Being elected in a ruby red district in the age of Trump not so much.

It’s telling that we can suggest Mitt again but HRC so much as talking sends people usually make into a rage. I’d rather listen to HRC. She was right about Trump. Mitt dislikes Trump but he still paved the way for him.

Romney-Gabbard, Make America Decent Again

Mitt Romney should pick Tulsi Gabbard.

They agree on little politically, but that is a benefit. A Romney-Gabbard ticket could be based, legitimately, on decency, truthfulness and honor. They could point the American people away from the toxicity that has come to infect American political life, and remind us that we are not two countries seeking disparate futures, but one people experimenting with different means to the same end.

Romney can be dusted off and sold as representing the Human Face of conservatism, but he stands for the same shit that the GOP has always been for.

Gabbard would be sold as embodiment of the True Left, untainted by Clintonist corruption.

On the hand, the GOP has to come up with a Plan B should Trump really lose it and crash and burn before 2020

And this sounds like the most plausible one they could come up with given what they have to work with

Where’s the Whistleblower? Probably in hiding because he/she knows that they’ll be exiled to fucking Siberia, you tangerine wankmaggot!

The whistleblower’s identity was always irrelevant. Always.

The whistle has been blown.
the alert has been sounded.
the fire department is hosing down the blaze as we speak.
Only the arsonist is looking for who called 911 (ie the ‘whistleblower’)

Trump is cash poor. He’s been cash poor for most of his professional life. He has to keep up appearances because he runs things using other people’s money as much as possible.

Selling the Trump DC would free up funds for him to squander elsewhere to keep up appearances.

And if higher income taxes had been in place for the last 50 years the Ford Foundation would be significantly larger.

The whole reason they started the Foundation was to avoid taxes. When taxes went down, they stopped putting their income into it. (reminder: the Ford family wasn’t “earning” much of that money by the 1950’s; they were still pulling most of that income from long-dead Grandpa’s long-ago work).

Maybe we don’t talk about it because it’s obvious, but…

…Donald Trump Jr’s ability to get meetings with and take photo ops with both elected GOP officials and the pundit infrastructure of the GOP is the naked representation of how this whole fucking system is corrupt and based on implicit networks…good ‘ole boys and back room discussions…even as the participants crow about conspiracy and plotting.

There actually is a deep state of sorts…it’s just not the normal administrative state that the wingnuts are calling the “deep state.” It’s the social network of people and orgs with capital that coordinate behind the scenes to keep cash flowing towards their coffers. At the top level, this is the contractors and corporations that keep getting allocating money to do government work, who hire all the retiring generals and congressmen. “Pork” is something we’ve become accustomed to…and in particular, spending in the military-industrial complex for the sake of propping it up. Not even a wry joke anymore, just an inevitability. Yet it’s the basis of the kinds of behind-the-scenes understanding that are creating these bigger, much more dangerous systems of power distribution that are opaque and have no oversight.

Right now a lot of folks are doing Marxism-based critiques of how capital skews government, because capital always wants more…but this is generally presented as “more money, because money is an end unto itself.” This isn’t wrong, but it’s important to observe that part of that Charybdis-like vortex of “more” is weakening legal and societal norms of accountability. The goal is not just to have more purchasing power, but to be able to use that purchasing power without repercussion, more and more broadly defining what is possible with power on both the individual and organizational level.

Which, to me, best explains the coalition of bastards we’re facing: at top you’ve got plutocrats that want to be old school oligarchs; there’s also the ideologues that ultimately believe in their entitlement to tell other people what to do (updated daily, with carve-outs from morality for the leadership, as necessary); and at the bottom, you’ve got the people who don’t expect to prosper, but are willing to go along because the get license to be cruel assholes and sometimes lash out to ritually re-assert the status quo that they’re allowed to be cruel assholes.

And that’s both the malady of the nation and the world.
