And here’s a highlight, as Rep. Devin Nunes — one of the most sycophantic of the overwhelmingly sycophantic Republicans — is revealed to have been deeply involved in conversations between Rudy Giuliani and his criminal associate Lev Parnas.

re: #114 Citizen K

All this shit just stinks.

And twitter is just overflowing with how infinitely bad Harris was all over, how she hated black people and everything, clearly.

We’re never getting another POC president in my lifetime, are we?

If you’re 80+ that may well be true. The impossible hurdle for Harris was three fold though: female, black &, yes, a cop. One of those can be overcome by a good enough candidate but in today’s environment no one is going to overcome all three. I expect Warren to be the candidate this time and I expect that, absent serious Russian ratfucking, she can win.

Post her, then there will be other candidates of color and perhaps even candidates with LEO backgrounds though that will require serious rehabilitation of the entire legal system first. No matter how “good” a cop Harris was, she was still a prosecutor working within an utterly corrupt system and too many people could not look past that, and they are not just Berniebros. This is, in the end why she could not get enough money, I would argue.

Whenever I see an accusation made at Trump’s critics, the more likely I’m to believe this is something Trump himself or his allies have done.

As for Harris, Booker, and Castro, there is a level of racism even in the Democratic party that makes it easy to latch onto things like “Harris is a cop” and dismiss her. And it’ll be hard to get that out.

It, to me, is the same thing that makes it easy for people to argue that Obama was a conservative.

Just heard the news about Harris. All that I want to add is this:

Don’t jump on the negativity shit-train. Stay positive about what the Democratic party has to offer. Get out of the circular firing squad.

Harris dropped out for ‘reasons’. All but one candidate is going to have to drop out for ‘reasons’. Everybody still needs to vote for the Democrat. Harris was in my top three candidates so I’m sad about this, and I’m mad at the press and the trolls, but it’s done.

Obama got the left to project their hopes on to him and then when Obama revealed himself to be a complicated individual they acted like he sold them out.

Obama, even when I criticized him for being too gunshy, had a metric assload of needles he had to thread just to be palatable to folks. He couldn’t afford to be strident, and he came off as a true believer in pragmatic incrementalism. Unfortunately, between the all-or-nothing GOP and a media that delighted in treating him like a radical anyway….

The main problem with Harris was that she didn’t have a clear message. And, in addition, women face more discrimination in attaining office than men in general. She was one of the candidates I supported; she would have been an excellent choice; but in this field with too many choices, she did not stand out because she didn’t have a fanatic fan base. I am so afraid that that the nominee could be Bernie, who like Trump, is a Russophile. And he will lose in a landslide to Trump or any Republican, who will tar him as a socialist.

this above is true

what is also true is that politics aint beanbag

if you decide to get in it, you face the circumstances in and of the time
- the electorate, with all its prejudices, predilections and irrationality.
- raising money the best way you can and spend it as you see fit
- you deal with what the media says about you
- you deal with whoever your primary and general opponents are
- you deal with whatever they throw at you

if you’re good enough to navigate all that (politics and campaigning) and get more votes than everyone else, you win and then get to try to actually govern

this is the game right now
if things were different, they’d be different
they’re not
anyone in politics must know this or they don’t stand a chance

- biden and sanders have a lot of name rec, they also resonate to some people
- warren resonates
- buttigeig resonates, somewhat

- most of the rest do not and won’t. not this cycle
- there’s nothing wrong with them
- no one owes them a look
- this time, this crowded dem field, with these problems and this opponent in trump, in 2019 they did not have it.

simple as that.

I’ll be blunt. It’s a disappointing thing that Pete has risen as far as he has and Julian Castro is an afterthought. I get why people like Pete but Julian is talking about things that most of the others won’t or can’t effectively talk about. We could see if we elected Castro a build up of cooperation with our Spanish speaking neighbors that we haven’t seen and it would be done on shared democratic values rather than the shared red baiting bs Reagan had in Argentina, Chile, & Central America.

One of the greatest intros ever.

I remember the first time I heard this song (with the intro) on an underground FM radio station in Chicago…it blew my teenage mind.

Jenny said, when she was just five years old
There was nothin’ happening at all
Every time she puts on the radio
There was nothin’ goin’ down at all, not at all
Then, one fine mornin’, she puts on a New York station
You know, she couldn’t believe what she heard at all
She started shakin’ to that fine, fine music
You know, her life was saved by rock’n’roll

It is a rare thing when someone takes a great song and adds a section to it like Hunter’s intro that makes it even better. It’s almost as good as Jim Gordon’s piano outro to Layla.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told CNN that he is “1,000% confident” that Russia, not Ukraine, meddled in the 2016 presidential election, breaking from President Trump and others in his party who have pushed the discredited conspiracy theory.

Said Graham: “It was the Russians. I’m 1,000% confident that the hack of the DNC was by Russian operatives, no one else.”

He added: “I’ve got no doubt that it was the Russians who stole the DNC emails. It wasn’t Ukraine. Russia was behind the stolen DNC emails and Podesta and all that good stuff.”

My brother is eight years older. I feasted on his record collection. It had most of what you’ve listed. In grade school I was listening to Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, Derek and the Dominoes, etc. Later in the mid ’70s he was a dj at his little college radio station. He brought back crates of promo records—stuff like Suicide and Pere Ubu.

A cousin of mine—who is now a stone-cold wingnut—once asked me to water plants in he and his wife’s apartment when I was about freshman in high school. They rolled a joint and put on Neil Young’s “Live Rust.” I knew of his folkish side, but that shit blew me away.

From ‘witch hunt’ to a guilty plea: Duncan Hunter’s abrupt 180 on his innocence

The allegations facing Rep. Duncan D. Hunter (R-Calif.) have been icky from the start: that he used campaign money to fund illicit romantic relationships, family vacations and the like.

He maintained his innocence as details of those spooled out, even implicating his wife. But on Tuesday, Hunter will change course and plead guilty to one charge related to this, after spending more than a year claiming he’s innocent and having voters reelect him on that basis.

Hunter didn’t just claim he’s innocent. He tried to throw the whole legal system under the bus to protect his name and job, saying the federal prosecutors who meticulously researched his alleged wrongdoing were political hacks out to get him. “Witch hunt,” he said, without any evidence whatsoever. (Sound familiar?) In the middle of this, he even asked voters in the San Diego area to reelect him. And they did (barely) in November 2018.

Then:
Witch Hunt!

Now: Nevermind
Uh, yeah, I guess I did kind of do that stuff.

To add to that story, Rita Coolidge wrote the piano melody and her boyfriend at the time “borrowed the melody” for Layla. Fascinating glimpse behind the scenes. The link goes to a newspaper article discussing Rita Coolidge. Link Gordon abused drugs, became paranoid, killed his mother with a butcher knife and si serving a 30 year sentence. Great melody, love that piano outro but the story behind it is mind boggling - requires readjusting my thoughts on the song. I read about Nunes in the report and all I can see in my mind is that image of Schiff just sitting there every time Nunes gave one of pissy little speeches or one of his grandstanding stunts. Rarely (if ever) making eye-contact, but instead just staring straight forward. It also puts that flash of anger in the last closing speech in total context: He knew that the shitstain sitting next to him was in it up to his eyeballs and had to hold himself from saying such aloud.

yes and recall the helicopter landed in the parking lot and they let the rest of them out

then they ‘organized’

They do know how to block traffic so that the entire crew get across a street.

For the second time, I have received an email at my Comcast box that has really weird recursive bot-constructs. Am I being confused with Rep Nunes?

It reminds me of a couple poems by Joe Haldeman ( my all time FAVORITE Science Fiction writer) who constructed them so that the last sentence of one stanza was the first sentence of the next, but not in a way that was repetitive. Rather, the sentence had a slightly different meaning in the new context.

It’s the sort of creative mental exercise I simply can’t do, so I was impressed.

I just found this:
How many U.S. adults have a criminal record? Depends on how you define it
Something Andrew Cuomo said in 2017.

The FBI considers anyone who has been arrested on a felony charge to have a criminal record, even if the arrest did not lead to a conviction. The FBI only counts those with a misdemeanor if a state agency asks the bureau to keep it on file.

So by the FBI’s standard, 73.5 million people in the United States had a criminal record as of June 30.

The Census Bureau lists the adult population in the United States at 249.4 million. That means the FBI considers about 29.5 percent of adults to have a criminal record

The GOP will continue acquitting Trump no matter what crime he commits — unless, of course, he decides to support measures on climate change and repealing the tax cut and providing election security. They are all Putin puppets who are assiduously working with Trump to undermine our nation.

What the fuck does Rudy being a private citizen have to do with anything?

Let’s say I’m a private citizen and I’m a prime suspect in a murder. You better damn believe it’s legal for the cops to subpoena my phone records and shit to build their case against me prior to arrest.

These people are unfucking real.

Let’s say you’re a private citizen and you are trying to divorce my client and I think you are hiding assets. You better damn believe I’m gonna subpoena your bank records. It’s a routine part of discovery in civil and family actions. Prosecutors also routinely subpoena phone records in crimes because many criminals are idiots and talk to each other before during and after they commit crimes.

With the GOP, if it’s a Republican criminal, the thing that gets them upset is never the crime. It’s that anyone was able to find out about it. They think it’s a Republican’s Constitutional right to get away with it. And they’re probably troubled by the idea that Trump couldn’t simply delay compliance with the subpoena by suing like he always does.
