From downstairs:

Damn damn damn.
She was my top pick.
She was told she needed to drop in time to take her name off the California ballot in order to avoid a disaster of possibly losing the state and precipitating a primary bid against her, possibly from Tom Steyer.

That sucks. She would have been a great president.

Here’s hoping she becomes the next AG and gets turned loose on the Trump Crime Family.

HappyWarrior  Dec 3, 2019 • 10:12:08am

She deserved much better. I’m sorry but if more people understood what a President actually does, I’m confident she would be a front runner. I’m now undecided between Warren and Biden. I have parts of both that I like and parts I dislike.

That’s because the corporate media is keeping the two around for the entertainment value and the latter two because their bosses desperately want Warren gone.

Kamala is yet another example of how people of color (and in particular women of color) are held to ridiculously high standards compared to others.

She didn’t run a perfect campaign but she did a lot right and in my opinion deserved better than this.

Unfortunately, racism and misogyny chalk up another one in the win column.

:(

Looking back on 2008, it’s quite incredible that the race came down to an African American and a woman. And what’s more is both were fine candidates.

As far as I’m concerned, Sanders has created a movement of people who don’t understand what the President is actually supposed to do. And I can’t tell you how much it bothers me that you’re made out to be a sellout if you’re young or relatively young like I am and you don’t think Bernie is the answer. I’d take Biden over him. At least Biden understands that the Presidency is more than just one man or woman.

Tulsi did her job and successfully torpedoed Harris early and she never recovered precisely because of that goddamn “Kamala’s A Cop!” bullshit on top of the blatant misogyny that seems to be kind of trademark for this entire electoral cycle.

I hate this. I fucking do. It seems like the only unifying lesson we’ve learned as a country from 2016 is ‘Only White Male Presidents Allowed’. Misogyny and battered pragmatism did the rest.

Which gets me at why the Kamala is a cop narrative bothered me. You need prosecutors in a modern society. Is it a job that I could do? No, I could not be a prosecutor but someone has to do that. It’s truly thankless work and Kamala got made out to be like she was this fucking monster over it.

In her email to her supporters, she also said:

But I want to be clear with you: I am still very much in this fight.

And I will keep fighting every day for what this campaign has been about. Justice for The People. All the people.

Our campaign has been about fighting for people whose voices have not been heard or too often ignored.

We will keep up that fight.

Let’s remember: we were the first to put the injustice of inadequate teacher pay on the national agenda.

We will keep up that fight.

We were the first to demand justice for our children, declaring we would take bold executive actions to stop gun violence.

We will keep up that fight.

We were the first to demand justice for women with a plan to block unconstitutional state abortion laws.

We will keep up that fight.

And our campaign uniquely spoke to the experiences of Black women and people of color — and their importance to the success and future of this party. Our campaign demanded no one should be taken for granted by any political party.

We will keep up that fight because no one should be made to fight alone.

At the outset, really thought she would be a strong contender for the nomination. Just shows how difficult it is to develop a coherent message, create a strong funding mechanism and try to stand out on a crowded debate stage. That she dropped out before the first caucus or primary is a real surprise, given the early momentum she had.

Never seen anyone disparage Schiff for being a former federal prosecutor who supports the impeachment inquiry. As I said, it’s work that I could not do but prosecutors and attorneys general are vital to a functioning democracy and republic.

He’ll get my vote too but I really think he’s created something of a left wing tea party. I contend that the Democratic establishment needs to be challenged on issues particularly economics so my issue with him really isn’t that although I do feel he’s wrong about things like trade. However, it’s how he frames himself and his opponents. He frames himself as an uncompromising idealist but he’s shown himself to be just as cynical when it comes to issues that impact key members of the Dem base i.e. women/choice, immigrants, and PoC. It’s also his refusal to acknowledge that it’s going to take more than just him to get his wish list of legislation passed. Plus I really really do not like his surrogates.

Yeah, Yang is hardly all caps RICH. And, data show’s he’s getting generally small donations. Just lots of them. He also doesn’t seem to be doing significant television ad buys. Which is where a hell of a lot of campaign dough is burnt. He’s relying, for now, on a more digital media presence. At least that how it seems to me.

It’s a little of both IMO. All three attract young, impressionable minds who are prone to want to hear absolutist answers to questions that do not have an absolute answer. A great example of this is how Bernie responds to racial issues. He thinks it’s just an economic one but there are affluent African-Americans of all backgrounds who get mistreated by the police, there immigrant Americans of all backgrounds who feel threatened by nativism, etc

So many on the left I think don’t know what the fuck we really want. We say we want to hold Trump accountable but then we act like being a prosecutor or AG is a hindrance. Do I agree with every decision Kamala made as a DA and then AG? Time to come to grips with the idea that the next person elected President will be white and over 70. If we do it right, it could be a white Democrat over 70. If we do it very right, it could be a white female Democrat over 70.

It’s telling just how much celebration this one specific drop out is eliciting. No one else seems to be inspiring this much elation and gloating over her drop out. It’s disgusting and kind of shows who the real bedfellows are, really.

I wonder what the precedent is for abolishing a department is. Certainly we know that the Republicans wanted to abolish the Department of Education early on but that never happened. Other cabinet departments have merged in the past too.

Technically the War Department and the Post Office Department were disbanded. The War Department was superceded by the Army and Air Force Departments, which later along with the Navy Department were combined into the Defense Department. The Post Office Department became the Postal Service.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, admitted his guilt Tuesday in a yearslong campaign-finance scandal and now awaits his sentence.

The U.S Marines veteran all but ended his political career during a brief hearing before U.S. District Court Judge Thomas J. Whelan, admitting to a single count of conspiracy to convert campaign funds to personal use. He said only one word to the judge, “Guilty.”

Hunter will likely face up to five years in prison when he is sentenced March 17, but he may receive much less time behind bars.

I think minorities are tired of hearing from so called populists that if we just focus on economics that all will be fine. And I really feel that’s why I get annoyed with Sanders. He wants to act like our societal problems are simply because of wealthy disparity and that is a problem but it is not the only problem. And he goes out of his way to use right wing like rhetoric to dismiss people who point that out. It’s maddening especially to PoC.

I mean…that’s generally true of the past few elections too. But it’s still clear that even post-Obama, candidates of color struggle far more than their white counterparts despite similar resumes and appeal otherwise, not to mention that the anti-“identity politics” brigade for the most part seems to be winning, between media ratfucking, ‘economics only’ politics, and (once again) battered pragmatism.

It just seems sadly fitting and infinitely frustrating that those who need to and deserve to advocate more and be loudest about needing to be represented are the first to compromise tend to be the ones that are forced to compromise first just because they’re the first to feel the worst, when the worst comes. Meanwhile those who are the loudest and most strident tend to end up the ones most insulated if/when the worst comes to pass.

The frustrating thing is seeing parts of the left fuel the bs about identity politics. I want to shout at Bernie every time he calls attacks on choice, minorities, etc “distractions.” Certainly economic plutocrats define the right but so do sexists and bigots.

Also, he is fitting into his usual narrative on how the criminal justice system puts poor people at a massive disadvantage (he is a former federal prosecutor himself).

So, white male former prosecutor laughing at woman of color former prosecutor and the joke is she deserves to be treated like a defendant.

If you’re 80+ that may well be true. The impossible hurdle for Harris was three fold though: female, black &, yes, a cop. One of those can be overcome by a good enough candidate but in today’s environment no one is going to overcome all three. I expect Warren to be the candidate this time and I expect that, absent serious Russian ratfucking, she can win.

Post her, then there will be other candidates of color and perhaps even candidates with LEO backgrounds though that will require serious rehabilitation of the entire legal system first. No matter how “good” a cop Harris was, she was still a prosecutor working within an utterly corrupt system and too many people could not look past that, and they are not just Berniebros. This is, in the end why she could not get enough money, I would argue.

We have had exactly 1 (puported) billionaire president in our history. Washington may have been close in inflation adjusted wealth. Now, we have had an awful lot of millionaire presidents.

The Roosevelts and Kennedys were super-wealthy; adjusted for inflation, their fathers probably would be billionaires.

And the Bushes. 41 made most of his money from Carlisle Group after his term, but his father Preston Bush was an industrialist decades earlier, who some chunk of his money came from 1930’s Germany.

I’d like to see her as VP candidate for any of our older potential candidates (Bernie, Biden, Warren, or God forbid, Bloomberg).
