Overall, a lot of good signs. Doublings (whatever you believe in the testing, it has at least increased) are increasing everywhere. IT & Germany seem to be progressing well. Hopefully, US keeps on trend to see 10+ day doublings in another week.

We need to elect a Democratic President and Senate first. Then a serious investigation of Kavanaugh’s financial history by a Democratic AG would likely be enough to persuade him to leave the court; that’s all that is needed. We will then have the majority and can proceed from there.

He will not leave. Even if Kavanaugh is convicted of tax evasion the parasites Trump and McConnell put on the bench will overturn the sentence.

I think this is the most likely take:

I think the take most likely is Trump wants to entirely destroy Captain Crozier’s career.

Crozier committed the unforgivable sin: He made Trump look bad (whether he released that letter to the press or not).

The one thing you can depend on is Trump always seeks revenge. He’s like a revenant.

Yeah, I’m reading it now, and I shouldn’t be surprised that they’re trying to argue the same shit that Donny is, which is that it’s considered “safe” by the FDA and the possible side-effects have been known for ages, so why would it be dangerous to test it against COVID-19 or even just letting people try it on themselves.

Yes, it is safe…for the uses the FDA has approved! It’s like saying that since your lawnmower is viewed as safe for mowing normal laws, it should be perfectly safe being used to trim trees.

Firmer confirmation Gov. Gregg Abbot is a Nazi experimenting on people.

khou.com

The headline is trash as it doesn’t match either the article nor the interview.

Gov. Abbott says patients there are being given the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, which was being touted by President Trump as a possible treatment for COVID-19.

“As of today, about 30 patients are being tested with the hydroxychloroquine to determine whether it will be a successful treatment for the patients,” said Gov. Abbott. “They are in the second day of this testing regimen that will last several more days. We look forward to updating you as the week progresses about how this drug is aiding or not these patients.”

Crozier’s career is already over. He rose as far as he could on merit and time-served, to get that first start would require Modly as Acting SecNav and the Joint Chiefs as a whole to pass the recommendation on to Trump, who then would have to pass it to the Senate for a majority vote. There’s no way in Hell that Modly would ever recommend Crozier if he wanted to taking that “Acting” off his resume. Assuming Crozier is allowed to continue serving, he’s never going to command a ship again. He’ll likely serve out the remainder of his 30 years in some posting at the ass-end of Nowhere, then quietly retire from the service with his pension and benefits.

As for the investigation, the purpose of it is pretty clear: Keep Crozier quiet until after the election or until they can find an excuse to shit-can him, whichever comes first. Last thing Modly wants is Crozier to put in his papers, and then walk from the Pentagon immediately to the media to tell his side of the story absent worry of a court martial. Which really says to me that they know he didn’t “leak” the letter, that someone in his chain of command did, and so now they’re looking to justify all the shit they’ve already said about him.

I don’t mean that he won’t ever get advanced to rear admiral. That isn’t happening.

I mean the goal is to either force him out early (recall suspending the FBI director just before he could retire) or actually find some way to courts-martial him and jail him, or strip him of his rank as well as his command.

It’s like saying that since your lawnmower is viewed as safe for mowing normal laws, it should be perfectly safe being used to trim trees YOUR HAIR.

I’d like some people to do just that.

Fifty-inch television might be part of the problem, since the show was originally put on video tape or kinescope for televisions of the Sixties and Seventies with regular NTSC resolution.

What we’re watching it on is from the 138-DVD set my wife bought for Valentine’s Day, on a computer with a 20” diagonal screen.

We’re only part-way through season two (so still in black-and-white), up to the part where Barnabas Collins is preparing to marry Maggie Evans then turn her into a vampire, whilst the town is searching for her. The secondary plot is Jason McGuire trying to force Elizabeth Collins-Stoddard into marriage by threatening to expose her over her murder of her husband Paul eighteen years prior.

I just unleashed my letter to the editor pen and fired off a letter to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald. It’s been about a month since they published their obligatory once-a-month letter from a liberal, let’s see if they print it.

This whole area is chock full of veterans, and I have no doubt that FOX is going to spin this as hard as they can to make Captain Crozier look like the bad guy here, so someone needs to bring a truthful viewpoint to my area. I guess that job falls on me.

With my seventeen years in the Navy, Acting SecNav Modly gave the most unhinged disgusting display I ever heard from a civilian leader to a command.

In the military you sort of expect civilian politicians to crap on you occasionally; it’s sort of par for the course.

But an unhinged rant attacking freedom of the press (something all military personnel affirm or swear to defend as part of the Constitution), a presidential candidate (which would be a violation of the UCMJ if a sailor did it), whinging about how badly the Acting Secretary was being treated back in Washington while your commanding officer was doing his duty to protect his command and save your lives; all of that was the most shameful display I’ve ever witnessed in my life.

This will not just resonate amongst the officers and crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Those men and women have husbands and wives, children and parents, grandparents and aunts and uncles and friends and neighbours, all of whom will remember just which CinC it was who hired him to assuage his Jupiter-sized ego.

They will remember who saved the lives of their family members and friends.

And every other command across all the Armed Services will know that they could be next for Trump’s wrath, along with their family and friends.

Veteran social media is absolutely livid.

If there is a better way for the GOP to lose the support of just about every active duty person, reservist, or veteran, I can’t think of one.

I’m not sure how curbside would work with my CVS since I swear that 50% of the customers ahead of me to pick up prescriptions pre-pandemic wanted to spend five minutes arguing with the clerk about the prescription being filled wrong, having the wrong amount of pills, costing too much and/or had a hand basket of stuff to be cashed out at the same time.

Last couple of times I’ve been it to pick up a refill I’ve been the only person there to pick up, and they are maintaining distancing and wearing masks.

Also, CVS does do refills by mail as well, though I have not signed up for that yet.

I’d check out this timeline:

factcheck.org

The international alliance was formed to “help guide rheumatology clinicians in assessing and treating patients with rheumatologic disease.” The alliance — which is supported by the Lupus Foundation of America, Lupus Research Alliance and the American College of Rheumatology — has called on clinicians to report “all cases of COVID-19 in rheumatology patients, including those with mild or no symptoms.”

As of April 2, the group had information on 110 validated patients: 36% with rheumatoid arthritis, 17% with psoriatic arthritis and 17% with systemic lupus erythematosus, or lupus, an autoimmune disease.

“One frequently asked question: over 25% of patients who developed a COVID-19 were on HCQ at the time of diagnosis,” the group said in a tweet thread on April 2, referring to hydroxychloroquine.

“Based on early data currently available in our registry, we are not able to report any evidence of a protective effect from hydroxychloroquine against COVID-19,” the group said in an April 4 tweet.

I Don’t Take Responsibility At All (dangerman)  Apr 7, 2020 • 6:45:53am

David Frum: “That the pandemic occurred is not Trump’s fault. The utter unpreparedness of the United States for a pandemic is Trump’s fault. The loss of stockpiled respirators to breakage because the federal government let maintenance contracts lapse in 2018 is Trump’s fault. The failure to store sufficient protective medical gear in the national arsenal is Trump’s fault. That states are bidding against other states for equipment, paying many multiples of the precrisis price for ventilators, is Trump’s fault. Air travelers summoned home and forced to stand for hours in dense airport crowds alongside infected people? That was Trump’s fault too. Ten weeks of insisting that the coronavirus is a harmless flu that would miraculously go away on its own? Trump’s fault again. The refusal of red-state governors to act promptly, the failure to close Florida and Gulf Coast beaches until late March? That fault is more widely shared, but again, responsibility rests with Trump: He could have stopped it, and he did not.”

“The lying about the coronavirus by hosts on Fox News and conservative talk radio is Trump’s fault: They did it to protect him. The false hope of instant cures and nonexistent vaccines is Trump’s fault, because he told those lies to cover up his failure to act in time. The severity of the economic crisis is Trump’s fault; things would have been less bad if he had acted faster instead of sending out his chief economic adviser and his son Eric to assure Americans that the first stock-market dips were buying opportunities. The firing of a Navy captain for speaking truthfully about the virus’s threat to his crew? Trump’s fault. The fact that so many key government jobs were either empty or filled by mediocrities? Trump’s fault. The insertion of Trump’s arrogant and incompetent son-in-law as commander in chief of the national medical supply chain? Trump’s fault.”

“For three years, Trump has blathered and bluffed and bullied his way through an office for which he is utterly inadequate. But sooner or later, every president must face a supreme test, a test that cannot be evaded by blather and bluff and bullying. That test has overwhelmed Trump

Which really says to me that they know he didn’t “leak” the letter, that someone in his chain of command did,

One thing that stands out to me, is that the acting Secretary asked Crozier to contact him by telephone if he had concerns that weren’t being addressed in his chain of command.

I’m pretty sure the sequence of events were something like:

1) Crozier reports concerns through chain of command.
2) Acting Secretary either orders or has standing orders in place for navy to not listen to those concerns.
3) Acting Secretary offers to talk to Crozier by phone.
4) Crozier documents his disagreement with his orders through his chain of command.
5) Someone between Crozier and the acting secretary leaks the letter.

The Trumpists were trying to cover up that the valid concerns that Crozier had, and had asked him to use an non-official communications channel in order that is concerns could be take out of his chain of command, and so that they wouldn’t be documented.

And that’s the thing they didn’t want other people in the military to do, start letting people know exactly how bad the Trump regime is fucking up.

As for the investigation, the purpose of it is pretty clear: Keep Crozier quiet until after the election or until they can find an excuse to shit-can him, whichever comes first.

I agree with that. Is he allowed to resign his commission if he wanted to?

Does anyone happen to know how many ‘levels’ there would be between the Acting Secretary and Commander Crozier? I’m guessing it can’t be that many.

The only remedy is to get the Senate, Kill the filibuster and 60 vote threshold and expand the court from 9 to 15 and pack it with three young women of color and three gay young men so Pulpit Pimps can’t force their garbage religion down our throats.

re: #164 Danack

I agree with that. Is he allowed to resign his commission if he wanted to?

Does anyone happen to know how many ‘levels’ there would be between the Acting Secretary and Commander Crozier? I’m guessing it can’t be that many.

Just realized this. Not only is Modly acting Secretary, he’s also acting undersecretary as well. These guys are such a shit show.

Modly is the undersecretary of the Navy, not the acting undersecretary. He was confirmed for the position. Per Wiki, he is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Georgetown University, and Harvard Business School. He served on active duty in the United States Navy as a helicopter pilot and spent seven years as a U.S. Navy officer. So, not a terrible resume for an undersecretary.

IMHO, Trump was, on a personal level, ready for this pandemic in one significant way. He is definitely NOT vitamin-D deficient, whereas MOST people in this modern world ARE, including most Americans, but ESPECIALLY the elderly, shut-ins, the disabled, people with darker skins, and people whose budgets are so tight that inexpensive vitamins are never even considered in their shopping lists. And I’m flabbergasted that this seems to get near-zero attention/emphasis by much of the world’s most reputable health professionals.

Cudos to Dr Seheult and Dr John Campbell for acknowleging and drawing attention to the importance of vitamin D in our immune systems.

Greetings from Israel, where we’re T minus 30 minutes to the national COVID-19 curfew…

Israel in lockdown for Passover holy days, confined to homes on Seder night

The whole of Israel will be on a strict lockdown for the first few days of the Passover holiday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday night, as part of the measures to fight the spread of coronavirus.
He also said that there would be a full curfew on Wednesday night, to deter people who may be tempted to visit family and friends during the Jewish festival.

The prime minister said the nationwide lockdown would last from 4 pm Tuesday until 7 am Friday. The curfew will last from 6 pm Wednesday until 7 am Thursday,m during which time people would be confined to their homes.
Speaking a televised address, Netanyahu urged Israelis to adhere to the restrictions, which he said would be enforced by police. “It is important to protect your health and the health of your loved ones,” he said.

While virtually no one knew about them here a year ago, seems that most of tomorrow’s Passover seders in the country will be done via Zoom …

Even if not another American dies of covid19 after today, the death toll is on Trump and his incompetent and failed admin. They failed to heed the public health warnings in Jan, Feb, and March. They didn’t aggressively test, and we’re still not aggressively testing enough to get ahead of this.

But Trump wants to blame everyone else for his incompetence and dumbfuckery. Blame the WHO. The WHO had a working test. The CDC version initially gave screwed up results. That was time lost. Trump refused to use the WHO version. Time lost.

Trump then claimed this would disappear with warm weather. That we’d have this under control. 10,000+ deaths later and closing on 400,000 cases later, and they’re still lying their asses off.

I know. But the point is that it is now a well-established talking point.

Had it worked, it would have been the Hail Mary of all Hail Mary plays, established Trump as a visionary, hero and savior of the nation and sent all those liberal elitist intellectual Deep State types scurrying back to their ivory towers to wither away in oblivion…

They have to cling to it because Trump cannot let it go: he knows he is fucked.

Who would have thought that Trump would play the Jude Law character in Contagion?

Isn’t the actual claim from some early study that hydroxychloroquine, if administered at an early point in the disease, alleviates the symptoms and may prevent progression to a more serious stage?

Gotta be honest. Thank You Sean Penn.
latimes.com

As the need for COVID-19 testing grows, the city of Los Angeles received an unexpected boost from actor Sean Penn and his nonprofit organization, Community Organized Relief Effort. The group, known as CORE, has been working with L.A. officials to run operations at some coronavirus drive-through testing facilities.

“We are accustomed to working in foreign places supporting other communities,” Penn said in an emailed statement. “In this situation, every single one of us responding, including myself, are also experiencing the impact of this crisis in our own personal lives.”

According to Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Jeff Gorell, CORE’s efforts will allow more city and county residents to be tested while freeing up first responders, including firefighters, for other emergency services.

There is also a worry that as an immune suppressor, not what you want at the onset. If you get a cytokine storm, (damaging immune over response, damaging tissue) there are many drugs they can turn to.

But Trump must be pure and infallible, for he is Donald Trump, the billionaire everyman supergenius that jiujitsus Dems against one another with deft populism and pure working man ideals. He can never be at fault by definition, everything else must have failed around him, especially science and Democrats.

My guess is that he has mixed motives. On some level, he’s probably doing it because he is an actual doctor (though I don’t know how much an ophthalmologist can help). But I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s also doing it to counter the terrible press he got a couple weeks ago when he was an asshole about testing. But I’ll give him mild applause because he is trying to help in a real way, even though he’s probably still going to be a dick about the role the federal government should play in this.

Proof of what you can get when you have a REAL leader:
New Zealand isn’t just flattening the curve. It’s squashing it.

HAVELOCK NORTH, New Zealand — It has been less than two weeks since New Zealand imposed a coronavirus lockdown so strict that swimming at the beach and hunting in bushland were banned. They’re not essential activities, plus we have been told not to do anything that could divert emergency services’ resources.

People have been walking and biking strictly in their neighborhoods, lining up six feet apart outside grocery stores while waiting to go one-in-one-out, and joining swaths of the world in discovering the vagaries of home schooling.

It took only 10 days for signs that the approach here — “elimination” rather than the “containment” goal of the United States and other Western countries — is working.

A ‘Liberty’ Rebellion in Idaho Threatens to Undermine Coronavirus Orders

Inside an old factory building north of Boise, a few dozen people gathered last week to hear from Ammon Bundy, the man who once led an armed takeover of an Oregon wildlife refuge.

The meeting, which appeared to violate orders by Gov. Brad Little of Idaho to avoid group gatherings, was an assertion of what Mr. Bundy said was a constitutional right to peacefully assemble. But Mr. Bundy said he also hoped to create a network of people ready to come to the aid of those facing closure of their businesses or other interference from the government as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

“If it gets bad enough, and our rights are infringed upon enough, we can physically stand in defense in whatever way we need to,” Mr. Bundy told the meeting. “But we hope we don’t have to get there.”

Farther down:

While the state was one of the last in the country to identify a coronavirus case, it now has far more cases per capita than California. Blaine County, which includes the popular Sun Valley ski resort, now has the largest per capita concentration of coronavirus cases in the nation.
