Listening to the local “classic rock” station when we were in Scottsbluff today, they had an interesting program for their regular advertisers.

Businesses which are still open may advertise normally at the rate they normally pay.

Businesses which are shut down by the governor’s executive orders may run an equal number of adverts they normally pay for gratis, to tell their customers they are closed or how to contact them (and thanking their customers).

I thought that was a nice gesture by the radio station.

I spent the evening making myself another mask, this one in gold from an old shirt. Still kind of sketchy, but an imptovement over my first effort.

Note to glasses wearers: I put two tucks in it on either side of the nose, and it seems to have solved the steamed glasses problem — or mitigated it, at least. Which means it’s also keeping exhalations in.

It has arrived.

PPHD gives case update, first positive in Morrill County (Goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, more at the link):

Offiicals confirmed the first positive for COVID-19 in Morrill County, a woman in her 70s.

One new case has been announced in Cheyenne County, bringing the total cases there to three. The new case involves a man in his 60s.

Two new cases were also confirmed in Scotts Bluff County: both female, one in her 40s and the other in her teens.

Earlier in the day, the district had also announced a third case, a teenaged boy who had been confirmed as having a positive test during National Guard testing last week. He had been identified as a close contact of a previously positive case. His close contacts have been notified and quarantined.

Scotts Bluff County has now reported a total of 17 positive cases of the coronavirus.

In the PPHD area, 32 cases of the coronavirus have been reported. Ten people have recovered.

Contact tracing has begun in my county.

Needs must - trump can get anyone to redesign anything if it means a campaign ad for trump. It also means those that need the money the most will wait the longest. Seen as a benefit by the GOP.

Had not seen this elsewhere

“… Defense Health Agency officials on Monday advised military beneficiaries who take Zantac, also known as ranitidine, for heartburn, ulcers or gastroesophageal reflux disease, to speak with their doctors to switch prescriptions. Those using an over-the-counter version should stop taking it.

The announcement follows an order from the Food and Drug Administration to manufacturers April 1 to withdraw all prescription and over-the-counter ranitidine products amid concerns that an ingredient has been linked to cancer.

According to the FDA, an impurity in Zantac called N-nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA, “increases over time, and when stored at higher than room temperatures may result in consumer exposure to unacceptable levels of this impurity.” …”

Coronavirus: Landlord changes locks on California church after pastor intends to continue services (KCRA-TV)

The church in question is Cross Culture Christian Center in Lodi, California. They intended to defy California’s ban on large gatherings and hold a Palm Sunday service after being warned by health officials and police.

As a result, their landlord, Bethel Open Bible Church, changed the locks.

Now, Cross Culture is suing Bethel claiming a civil rights violation by that church.

Yes, any fundraising advantage for Senate races is good news: but it’s still way too early to get too excited: the Ds need to pick up at least 5 seats for a Majority - and with today’s political map, that’s a real uphill climb.

Saw Type O Negative twice in my teens. The first time I saw them was at Ogden Theater in Denver. On the same night right next door at The Fillmore Auditorium Bob Dylan was playing. Peter made fun of the audience, “You guys came here to see us dirtbags when you could be next door watching Bob Dylan!” he crooned. I still laugh when I think about that.

More COVID-19 economic fallout - in this case, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic might prove to have been the final nail in the coffin.

J.C. Penney Co Inc is exploring filing for bankruptcy protection after the coronavirus pandemic forced the U.S. retailer to temporarily shut its 850 department stores, upending its turnaround plans, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Plano, Texas-based company has access to enough cash to survive in the months ahead, even as revenue dries up because of the store closures, the sources said. Still, the company is contemplating a bankruptcy filing as one way to rework its unsustainable finances and save money on looming debt payments, which include significant annual interest expenses, the sources added.

Concerns about prolonged store closures and customers remaining sparse even when outlets eventually reopen have also factored in to J.C. Penney’s deliberations, some of the sources said.

J.C. Penney has not made any final decisions on how to address its strained finances, the sources said. The retailer is also considering asking creditors for breathing room through transactions that would rework debt outside of bankruptcy court proceedings, the sources added. There is also a possibility that J.C. Penney will be able to secure rescue financing, one of the sources said.

South Carolina dumped the “electability” argument in a ditch and Super Tuesday put two rounds in the back of its head. After that night, all we heard was excuses, self-pitying, and conspiracy theories. Bernie got knocked to the mat and he never recovered. Every time a new marker was set, a new state pointed to as the win that would lead to his comeback, Biden won it and won it convincingly.

A campaign geared to win no more than 30% of the primary votes was never going to win the presidency.

Again, there are true believers, idealists who really thought that Bernie could somehow win the Presidency and singlehandedly change the face of American politics, society and the economy. Some have shown a bit of sense and decided to support the DNC nominee, others were just born to whine.

And then there were a lot of ratfuckers, either foreign trolls or domestic, who only wanted to see Bernie nominated because it was believed (in my opinion correctly) that he would be easier to beat than Biden.

At this point, I think “Berner” could best be described as applying to those “true believers” who are acting like the last hold-outs of a dying regime, ready to charge the guns and die honorably than admit they failed. The MAGAts are already beginning to drop the act, while those who’ve chosen to support Biden are making pretty clear they want no part in the settling of scores.

He really wasn’t mine either. And whatever good Bernie does, I will still nurse a grudge over his insistence on running when he could have easily let Warren be the standard-bearer for the progressive left this year. But Biden is ticking a lot of the boxes I like to hear in a presidential candidate, one of the bigger ones being pragmatic and willing to listen to all sides even if he doesn’t agree with them. That’s a guy I think will do well in what’s looking to be a caretaker government for the next 4 years.

First World problems, I guess: one of my neighbors seems to have fallen asleep with the TV on (and I hope it’s as benign an issue as that, vs. say “dropping dead from COVID-19” ), and the acoustic anomalies here in our cutting-edge-of-contemporary-architecture building have made sure our apartment gets the sound in nice and clear as well. Which is why I get to surf LGF at 0300….

This is pretty old news: I recall hearing negative recc about ranitidine at least a year ago over the “storage” issue, wonder why DoD is just getting around to pulling it only now?

Yes, any fundraising advantage for Senate races is good news: but it’s still way too early to get too excited: the Ds need to pick up at least 5 seats for a Majority - and with today’s political map, that’s a real uphill climb.

If you’ve got a window ac unit, put it in “fan” mode. if it has a “high” setting, click on that. what i eventually did years ago was buy a floor fan. went on amazon and looked for reviews designating a fan the loudest thing people had ever heard. bought that. it won’t cut through absolutely everything, but it cuts through enough to make apartment life bearable.

If anyone didn’t have a refund in 2018 or 2019 tax years, there’s supposed to be a Get My Payment ‘app’ (I guess webpage) that comes online Friday to register your bank account number so you can get it electronically instead of waiting for the super-exclusive personally signed premium paper copy from the yam. Details here.

I filed a zero income tax form last week to give the IRS my current mailing address.

There’s no way I want to give them the details of my savings account. With the grifters in our government now, I wouldn’t be suprised if they instead emptied my account out.

You know the jokes about Trump “defunding” WHO?

Well, the first one is that it US contributions are only a bit over $400 million dollars a year. The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation pays over $200 million. That’s right, a private body is paying half what the US government pays.

And the second part of the joke is that the US doesn’t even pay all the money it owes, it’s about two years in arrears for its assessed contributions.

There are proposals in the EU parliament that the EU step up with 500 million EUR of emergency funding for WHO. More than total US contributions.

Florida deems WWE pro-wrestling ‘essential business’ amid coronavirus pandemic

Initially, WWE was not designated as an essential business which meant the company would have to comply with the governor’s shelter-in-place order, Demings said. However, after the company, led by chairman and CEO Vince McMahon, had “some conversation” with DeSantis’ office, the company was granted the distinction, according to Demings.

According to a memo from DeSantis’ office on April 9, essential workers in Florida included “employees at a professional sports (league) and media production with a national audience — including athletes, entertainers, production team, executive team, media team and any others necessary to facilitate including services supporting such production — only if the location is closed to the general public.”

The memo is dated the same day that McMahon’s pro-Trump super PAC announced a $26.6 million investment in broadcast TV ad buys set to run in the fall in the battleground states of North Carolina and Florida.

Always follow the money.

So, if, as projected, 60,000 people die of COVID-19 in the US, it is fair to say that 54,000 of them could have been saved if the WH required social distancing policies on March 2. That’s the number of lives we lost in the Vietnam war.

A campaign geared to win no more than 30% of the primary votes was never going to win the presidency.

the ‘electability’ argument is a dumb one
the issue really isnt who would do better against the other team’s guy
it’s who are more of us going to vote for
and that doesnt change much between primary and the general

as you say, if you cant win the primary the idea that you’d still somehow be stronger against the other team is really ludicrous

its that same bizzaro “if only everyone would just vote for me in the primary, i’d win and that is what makes me more electable in the general”

but they didnt.
you lost.

Of course, once the drop-outs started rallying around Biden instead the massive whining commenced. Not helped by the venom that had already been tossed out about various voting blocks in the Democratic Party, “the establishment”, etc. And few should have been surprised that a proclaimed outsider did not draw party loyalty, especially given his previous record from 2016.

“Extreme social distancing has bought us some time, but much of the country still lacks some of the critical systems needed to handle waves of new infections once those restrictions begin to lift.”

“We would need to be testing people who aren’t exhibiting any symptoms — not limiting tests to the sickest patients… We would need thousands of health care workers across the country to track down, test and potentially isolate people who have interacted with confirmed coronavirus patients.”

And that shows Trump’s myopia and tunnel vision: he was totally fixated on the simple formula of strong economy = re-election that he could only see the Corona crisis as a threat to that and did all he could to dismiss it and play it down.

He totally failed to see that people would have rallied around a President who showed decisive, determined leadership and supported him even if the economy took a hit as a result.

The closure of the Czech restaurant market for three months will also have an adverse impact on microbreweries. The owners will have to sell or close them. According to the president of the Czech-Moravian Association of microbreweries Jan Suran, up to 40 percent of microbrewery owners have decided to liquidate. This worsened his March estimate that a quarter of owners would be forced to give up their business. According to the sector union, the state did not help, and many of the beer producers expected a relaxation of emergency measures earlier. According to Suran, it is practically the targeted liquidation of the industry.

This has been going on since last September. The thing is, the FDA is not, at least from looking at their press releases, forcing a recall, only requesting. My brother was taking ranitidine (Zantac) up until last September and stopped taking it then. Finding a replacement has been something of a crapshoot.

Thing is, from what I read, it doesn’t appear to be the drug itself that is the issue. The issue appears to be in the process that makes the drug. Which means that this same issue could possibly show up in other drugs.

Apparently, they’ve found that the active medication in zantac (ranitidine) doesn’t react well to warm temperatures, and can become carcinogenic.

There’s a reason why people are told not to store drugs in the bathroom medicine cabinets (but do anyways). This absolutely sucks for so many people, since this is a useful medication, but because people don’t store them properly, it can cause cancer.

I’m surprised that they’re not indicating that you should store it in a refrigerator, but I’m not an expert here (and don’t intend to play one on the twitters… )

re: #145 lizardofid

My guess is that most authoritarian regimes try to marginalize and eliminate small businesses for a couple of reasons. These regimes are patronage systems, where everyone important formally or informally has a place in the patronage hierarchy. The big businesses will kick up to the oligarchs, and do cut-out jobs for them. In return, one of the things that the oligarchs can do is kill off the big businesses’ competition from small businesses. This also helps pull everyone into the control of the oligarchs, since they perceive anything outside the established power structure as a serious threat.

I don’t think it works that way in China, but don’t know enough about the system to know why.

The fate of Anacharsis Cloots, revolutionary extraordinaire:

Excluded at the insistence of Maximilien Robespierre from the Jacobin Club, he remained a foreigner in many eyes. When the Committee of Public Safety levelled accusations of treason against the Hébertists, they also implicated Cloots to give substance to their charge of a foreign plot. Although his innocence was manifest, he was condemned and subsequently guillotined on 24 March 1794.[4] He incongruously followed Vincent, Ronsin, Momoro and the rest of the Hébertist leadership to the scaffold, in front of the largest crowd ever assembled for a public execution.[5]

(via IBT) The U.S. on Tuesday was also the only country in the world to report more than 1,000 deaths. The United Kingdom (778 deaths), France and Italy came after the U.S. in the number of daily deaths. These dismal statistics came on the same day Johnson & Johnson, the world’s third largest pharmaceutical company, revealed plans to begin production of its trial COVID-19 vaccine on an “at risk” basis.

Manufacturing “at risk” will allow J&J to produce this coronavirus vaccine candidate and release it for public use more quickly. J&J said the vaccine will be produced as a not for profit inoculation.

Border manufacturers testing, certifying ventilators and ramping up to deliver in “a couple of weeks.”

“…Developing affordable ventilators

Innovations include manufacturing personal protective equipment and ventilators desperately needed by hospitals in both the U.S. and Mexico. Levine said several teams of manufacturers along the border are collaborating to build a new ventilator.

“We’re working with a group in Ciudad Juárez, Monterrey, Sonora and Tijuana,” she said. “We all formed a group with the advice of some researchers from MIT, some researchers from India to try to create a ventilator that can also be very affordable and easy to put together.”

On the border, companies collaborating to build the new ventilator include Flutec, an international HVAC design and build company, and Mechatronics, which specializes in “medical equipment assembly, design and testing” through robotics and artificial intelligence according to the companies’ websites. Both have operations in El Paso and Ciudad Juárez.”

I got scoffed at for supporting Biden over Bernie by a few people my age. I’m not gonna knock people who like me were teens or kids in the Bush years but I wish they would learn those lessons.

With my son, who voted for Bernie in the primary but will vote for Biden in the general, the best conversation to have is to challenge him to figure out how we are going to get to his goals, which aren’t much different than mine, from where we are right now.

a little april 15 humor

A man, called to testify at the IRS, asked his accountant for advice on what to wear. “Wear your shabbiest clothing. Let him think you are a pauper.”
Then he asked his lawyer the same question, but got the opposite advice. “Do not let them intimidate you. Wear your most elegant suit and tie.”

Confused, the man went to his rabbi, told him of the conflicting advice and requested some resolution of the dilemma.

“Let me tell you a story,” replied the rabbi. “A woman, about to be married, asked her mother what to wear on her wedding night. ‘Wear a heavy, long, flannel nightgown that goes right up to your neck.’ But when she asked her best friend, she got conflicting advice: ‘Wear your most sexy negligee, with a V neck right down to your navel.’

The man protested, “What does all this have to do with my problem with the IRS?”
“No matter what you wear, you are going to get screwed.”

They don’t have any incentives, the Trump (Crime) Organization relies on marks, suckers, and people who know they wouldn’t be able to get these kinds of gigs in a “normal” administration. And, of course, there are probably a few true believers in the mix - or idiots like Pompeo who think they can survive the taint that will be the title of “former Trump Administration official”.

An extended period (years?) of low oil prices would also guarantee that most of the world’s remaining reserves would be used up quite wastefully, rather than for transitioning to long-term alternative sustainable energy sources. Double-plus ungood.

That’s ass backwards.
If the price is low it’s because nobody is buying.
If nobody is buying it’s because nobody is using.
Paradoxically high “oil” prices lead to extracting and using the worst kinds of fossil fuels — American fracked oil and gas, Russian Arctic extraction and Canadian tar sands.
When the price is low the only stuff being extracted is cheap Saudi oil, and if the price is low they’re not making enough money from that to keep their theocratic kleptocracy running. Win win.

Exactly why I’m happy that Biden and Bernie are collaborating. My problem with Bernie was mostly worrying that he would be ineffective but he’s correct about problems we face. The lessons younger people can learn is we get progress by working together and by acknowledging that all the seats.

Businesses were first to move to stop nonessential travel and to WFH. Those are part of their business continuity plans. My company did that early on, and they’ve got a worldwide presence.

They’re not going to restart before it is safe to do so, and businesses that go along with Trump on this risk losing business if people get sickened going to those businesses.

Trump’s economic collapse is all on Trump, and businesses shouldn’t be bailing out Trump. They should be demanding his resignation but wont. Because that’s not how any of them act or operate.

I like the one about the gambler…

A man calls his tax attorney and they go to see the IRS agent. As they are waiting in the office, the IRS agent looks over his paperwork and says:

“The reason for your audit is that you have a relatively lavish lifestyle, but not much income to justify it, can you tell me what you do for living?”

The man says “I am a professional gambler.”

“A gambler?” said the IRS agent with slightly puzzled and surprised look on his face.

“Yes, I make my money by betting, would you like a demonstration?”

“Sure” said the IRS agent “let’s have a demonstration”

“I will bet you $1,000; that I can bite my eye” said the gambler.

“OK, you have a bet” replied IRS agent with a smirk on his face. The gambler pops out his glass eye and bites it. IRS agent is shocked as he did not see that coming, and he did agree to a $1,000 bet in from of gamblers attorney.

“All right, all right, this was not really fair” said the gambler. “I will give you a chance to win your money back. I will bet you another $1,000 that I can bite my other eye.”

IRS agent looks over the guys paperwork and see that he is not legally blind and takes the bet. The gambler takes out his dentures and bites his other eye. The IRS agent is now visibly stressed and sweating for being on the hook for $2,000.

“I tell you what. Double or nothing, I will stand on the edge of your desk, close my eyes and piss into the garbage can on the other side of the room without spilling a drop, what do you say?”

IRS agent is a little perplex, but does not see how that would be possible and takes the bet. The gambler stands on the agents desks, unzip his pants, closes his eyes and pisses all over the agents desk.

“YES!!!” exclaimed the IRS agent knowing he won the bet and does not own the gambler any money.

“Ahh, shiiiit” said the attorney.

“What’s the matter?” asked the IRS agent.

“Well, he bet me $20,000 that he will come to your office today, piss all over your desk, and you would be happy about it.”

Got a reminder that Chat Noir needs a follow-up visit to the vet. Also one that Tuxedo Cat was due for vaccinations. So I called up the vet to make an appointment, and to see if they had any particular procedures in place regarding distancing. Turns out they do.

Building the vet is in has a vestibule. Procedure is to drop off the cat (in carrier) in the vestibule, withdraw, and then call the vet to indicate cat is there for the appointment. The vet (or assistant) can then fetch the cat for examination and treatment. Questions between the vet and owner carried out over phone - as well as payment once treatment is done.

Per the other cat they are suspending vaccination appointments for the foreseeable future in order to preserve supplies.

But 30% could win the nomination — if at least 3 other candidates remained in the race, all of whom so split the vote that 30% managed to be the largest percentage in most races. As I keep on saying, the two finalists in the first round of the Chicago race for mayor received 17.5% and 16% of the total votes. It was fortunate for the city that both of these women were highly qualified, though one had no prior experience in public office. But once there are more than 2 candidates in a race, anything can happen and it is often not anything good. Chicago lucked out. In 2016, America did not.

I dunno man. I’m not sure it’s even possible to be as much of a failure of a human as Donald Trump is. I don’t know a ton about Xi Jinping as a man, but I’m pretty sure he’s nice to his family. He’s also probably pretty well read and able to function in polite society. The Chinese Communist party probably doesn’t worship incompetence and buffoonery like Republicans do - someone rude, boorish and dumb probably doesn’t make it to the top of the party. Xi Jinping may be authoritarian and thin-skinned, but I think Donald fucking Trump is in a class all on his own. Not sure we’ve seen anything like this since Caligula.

The hypocrisy of impeached President Trump admin cutting off monies and hammering WHO over allegedly hiding or helping hide needed COVID data is awe-inspiring in scope.

Trumps Grades-Hidden.
Trumps Taxes-Hidden.
Trumps endless sequence of Acting Cabinet members, appointees and High Officials? No Senate confirmation or oversight because “acting”.
Whistleblowers-Excoriated humiliated and where possible fired along with their family members.

Belafon  Apr 15, 2020 • 9:22:53am

re: #294 goddamnedfrank

So suppose you expect (for 2020) to have $50,000 in income. That means you’d owe about $4,300 in taxes. If you paid extra each month and withheld a total of $5,300, you’d get a $1,000 tax refund.

With the CARES Act, you receive an additional “credit” for $1,200 and your tax liability is lowered from $4,300 to $3,100. Now, you would expect a $2,200 refund ($5,300 paid minus the $3,100 owed). Instead of paying you $2,200 after taxes in 2021, the IRS is sending you a $1,200 check now, so your actual refund at tax time is still $1,000.

Since this is essentially an early tax refund on taxes you will pay in 2020, you don’t have to pay it back and as Senator Dianne Feinstein’s office confirmed, it is not taxed.

They’re giving you a tax credit based on your income, and then giving you that credit up front. Part of the reason for doing this is that they are basing it on tax returns, but if you haven’t filed yet, they’re using previous years returns.

Yes, it’s got GOP fingerprints all over it, but it’s not taking all that money out of next years returns or taxes.

I like the one about the gambler…

Reminds me the joke about the old lady at the bank.

This old lady goes to the bank and demands to talk with a manager. The manager takes her to the office.

“Hello Mr Manager. I’d like to open a savings account in your bank.”

“Sure, no problem. But surely anyone in our front desk could have helped you.”

“See, it’s $100,000, and I would only trust a manager with that large amount.”

“Wow, amazing! If you don’t mind asking, how did you get that amount of money?”

“I don’t mind, young man. I gamble for it. For example, I bet $100,000 that your testicles are square.”

The manager laughs, but the old lady looks at him seriously. “I’m very serious about it, young man.”

“Ma’am, you are going to lose all your savings.”

“I don’t care. But can I come tomorrow with my lawyer to make everything legal.”

“No problem, ma’am. But it’s not a bet I would recommend.”

They part ways. The manager goes to his wife and tells her everything about the old lady. They have a good laugh at it and go to sleep.

The following day, the old lady arrives with her lawyer about 30 minutes before lunch. The manager takes them to his office, and as soon as the door closes, the old lady speaks.

“May I have a look?”

“Sure, but you will surely lose, ma’am.”

She insists, and he drops his pants and underwear. She gets closer, looking at it intently. She says, “May I feel them to make sure.”

“Sure ma’am,” said the manager trying to contain his grin.

As soon as the old lady grabs his jewels, the lawyer starts wailing and crying, throwing himself to the floor sobbing. The manager, startled, ask the old lady what happened to her lawyer.

“Oh, don’t worry. I bet him $250,000 that I would be grabbing you by the balls before lunch.”

😅

Agree to disagree.

Political alliances and coalitions are sometimes fleeting. We would all do well to remember that. It is similar to what Biden meant when he talked about working with segregationists in the Senate back in the day. You might disagree with someone on 95% of things, and you might fight them tooth and nail on those things, but if you can work together on the 5% that is common ground, that’s politics. And maybe, in doing so, you might be able to get them to budge on some of that 95% where you disagree; or even (gasp and/or faint) find some of that 95% where you can compromise and move the needle a bit in the “good/better” direction.

Even though Trump is talking about opening the economy, even though idiot GOP governors are talking about reopening the economy, my evil too big to fail employer is pushing forward with moving people home who would normally work in a call center. We’re talking thousands of people. This obviously costs money, and it blows a hole in the big push to get everyone consolidated in a relatively few sites, but it’s the smart thing to do, because we absolutely do not know how long we will be doing this.

Definitely in better shape than me; his workout regime must be awesome!

I keep getting into it on a Twitter with dumbass Berners. I gotta stop that. Something about their dim witted insistence upon being the most self righteous, pure expressions correct political thinking just sets me off.

It may be possible to persuade those who aren’t just trolls. I was in a polite FB discussion with a die-hard Trumper (he’s an IRL FOAF — and the mutual friend had asked me months ago to be easy on this guy) who told me that he has students who are Berners. I have no doubt that he would be urging them to hold fast to their ideals.

It’s important that Berners hear the other side — how holding on to these ideals will end up losing them forever — that the right way is to vote D and then work within the party to advance your goals — that anything else is designed to promote those who will wreck any possibility of achieving those objectives. Trotsky wrote in 1933 how the failure of German communists and moderates to collaborate led to the imposition of the most evil government of the 20th century.

The policy of the Communist party has been thoroughly wrong, its leaders started from the absurd axiom that social democrats and National Socialists represented “two varieties of Fascism”, that they were, in Stalin’s formula, not opposite poles but twins”. It is undoubtedly true, that social democracy, like Fascism, stands to defend the bourgeois regime against the proletarian revolution. But the methods of the two parties are entirely different. Social democracy is unthinkable without parliamentary government and mass organizations of the workers in trade unions. The mission of Fascism, however, is to destroy both. A defensive union of Communists and social democrats should have been based on this antagonism. But blind leaders refused to take this line. The workers were left divided, defenseless, without plan or prospects, before the attacking enemy. This position demoralized the proletariat and strengthened the self-confidence of Fascism.

Time to up the game here. It’s a public health crisis killing thousands. Start issuing fines for putting the rest of us at risk. Churches, protests etc.

The adults in the room have work to do. Work like all the stuff for work to be safe when we can get there. Which means going in to install sneezeguards, floor markings at six feet, PPE for employees, disinfection. All before we open. Make the rules print them, train on them. Then hope for the best.

Update for Chester County as of April 14th.

Cases: 675 (+30)
Deaths: 23 (+3)
Tested: ~4100 (525,000 pop)

Doubling rate of cases about 8 days still.

7 of the 23 deaths and 20 current cases in one particular township. I dug a bit and there is a veterans’ center there that has 300+ people living in it. I suspect that this location might be the source of these numbers.

From The Daily Beast:

Bank and Internal Revenue Service websites crashed on Wednesday morning after the first round of federal coronavirus stimulus payments rolled out via direct deposit accounts. Major banks such as Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Citi, and Capital One reported outages on their websites as online traffic surged when Americans started receiving their stimulus payments. Many people are also reporting “status not available” messages when trying to track their payments via an IRS tool, according to WXIA. Congress passed a $2.2 trillion stimulus package last month to ease the heavy blow to the economy amid the coronavirus pandemic. Americans who make less than $75,000 per year are expected to receive $1,200 checks.

Apparently not. Garden centers and plant nurseries are closed off even if they are a subsection of a larger store that’s allowed to be open, per the most recent executive order (which I’m reading through now) - so’s carpet, flooring, furniture, and paint. No traveling between two residences in the state if you own both, you gotta pick one and stay there.

Still have no explanation for the window washing thing.

I will say locally that I still see landscaping folks out violating the shelter-in-place stuff, which the most recent one restricted landscaping work solely for the purposes of appearance. It does seem to mostly be the single proprietor operations doing it, so they at least don’t seem to be violating social distancing?

For all the talk about how well Sweden is handling things — their current death rate per million population is 43% higher than ours, although their total case rate per million is two thirds of ours. We probably are heading to a higher rate per million population than theirs, but their mortality rate among reported cases is similar to Italy, France, Spain — 10%. That is very troubling, unless it reflects a vast under reporting of cases, which is certainly possible.

By that standard, we are open in my little rural county. My lawn mower guy is still out doing all of his lawns, and working on his sister’s new house, so they can move in. Home improvement stores are open.

Restaurants and most retail are closed, however, and most people are staying home. The WalMart is open in all departments, including gardening, but they are only allowing a few people in at a time, have social distancing markings, and had started to put up plexiglass last time I was there (a week ago). Hours are reduced so that the overnight staff can clean instead, and restock without pressure. Talking to the staff, they are nervous. Of course!

That county has 11 cases, 1 death, as of yesterday afternoon. About 35,000 pop. My county adjoining has about 5,000 pop., and no recorded cases, although I heard a couple of days ago of a couple that have it and are being asked to stay at home, although the man is in his 80s and having trouble breathing. Rumor only.

Still it’s all kinds of wrong

How does someone who died in 2018 have an open bank account?
That someone else has access to?

re: #406 Belafon

I love my wife but my money for bills kept turning into her money for takeout.

My mother did have a fake balance in her checkbook, so my dad didn’t realize how much she was holding back for bills and emergencies. He and money had this water in hand sort of thing happening. She won, and they had enough to live comfortably on until 90-92. Thank goodness! OTOH, my husband won, and I’m out by 72. :<

To add: the second wave of closings would be significantly stricter in most areas, in which case the economic hit becomes worse.

Can’t you manage a wire transfer from one account to the other by phone?

or use venmo or google pay or zelle something to do a person to person transfer? Heck even my small regional bank allows person to person transfers through their web site.

I’m so old I can’t grasp the concept of ‘Her” money and “My” money.

Law of Married Income. (Her money is her money. Your money is her money.)

And checks going out to 10,000 dead people (hypothetically speaking) out of 200M+ tax payers (a generously low number) clearly means the whole thing should be scrapped. Private enterprise would never make such a mistake. No sir. Never.

(Not like people were still calling my mom trying to sell her things 10 years after she died, or anything).
