Just the Green Cards? Wtf is that anyway?

re: #424 Rightwingconspirator

My humble prediction-The real unmovable obstacle in the reopening will be insurance. How do you run a business without insurance? Those guys will be utterly unmoved by trump tweets. It’s all actuarial.

Anyone else pretty sure the threat against Iranian boats was 100% Twitter and zero percent ROE changes in the Navy there?

I think Trump (or cronies) are using some of these Tweets as trial balloons before making any actual policy changes. The reporting of them acts as effective tests with the base or saber rattling at other countries without forcing any official action.

So, most stores with large parking lots have signs saying that they are not responsible to damage to cars or theft in the parking lot. I assume this is to avoid liability (please correct me if I’m wrong). Could businesses use similar signs to avoid lawsuits over people getting sick? You know, enter at your own peril. Republicans would call them “Freedom to Shop/Workout/Beautify” signs.

Yeah Sure WhatEVs  Apr 22, 2020 • 11:17:13am

So I have a question… I’d like your opinions.

I have to go into Michigan tomorrow. I have to have a document notarized which means fairly close to other people. I also have to send out my voting application for them to send my ballot to Canada (fuck trump, I’m doing my part!) and pick up a couple of checks at my UPS box (they do the notarizations there).

I have an N95 mask and several sets of gloves (and sanitizer between glove changes). I’m worried about my eyes. I’ve gotten used to not touching my face when I’m out (I chant “don’t touch” mentally on repeat the entire time I’m out of my house). I have a dry cleaning bag that’s clear. Should I wear it like a face shield?

I’m likely going to have to explain to Canada customs why I had to go into MI and possibly explain the safety measures I took while in the states. It’s also mandatory - by law - that I self isolate when I return (14 days of not setting foot outside my house).

Is the dry cleaning bag face shield overkill?

I’m thinking that in right to work states, yes. Look at the working conditions companies get away with pre-virus. The virus raises the stakes, but the underlying philosophy of you work or you quit has always been there.

Bonus, the state is off the hook for unemployment.

If you are a Southerner, especially one whose ancestors fought in the Civil War, I can begrudgingly accept your “heritage” argument in some cases, but if you are in or from New York, then displaying a Confederate flag can only be construed as a symbol of hatred, racism and as a provocation.

20
BigPapa  Apr 22, 2020 • 11:26:33am

Listened to the podcast with Andy Slavin and Mucci. Doesn’t tell us anything very new, if only more clear with little nuance. Trump only cares about Trump; he only asks for advice is he’s not sure what the best course of action is, but as long as he thinks it benefits him, he’ll be for it. His sycophants know to get him on board, sell it as benefitting him. If it’s a bad thing they want him to be against, say Obama was for it or would do it. That will get him against it.

These Twitter trial balloons are pure Trump acting on impulse. Then it’s up to his circle to get on board and sell it or use Obama to get him to back off.

The only appropriate place to be flying the flag of the insurrectionists is in a museum as a war prize or where the flag is put into a proper context (like a national park such as Gettysburg or Antietam or Manassas). That’s it. If you’re flying it from your porch, it’s because you ascribe to all that it stood for, and still stands for. And it’s also now acting as a stand in for the Nazi flag in places where that flag was banned (for obvious reasons).

After weeks of relentless hype, Trump and Fox News have suddenly stopped talking about hydroxychloroquine. That’s not an accident.

and with it, Trump’s last hope of salvaging the situation.

Had it worked, it would have been the ultimate Hail Mary Play: he could have sold himself as a genius, visionary and savior of the economy and millions of lives (in that order of importance) and he could have sent all those snooty college-educated deep-state liberal “expert” doubters and critics packing back to their ivory towers on their respective coasts to brood in ignominy.

I’d go with just a mask and my glasses… and soap and hand sanitizer (covid-19 does not enter through the skin, and gloves and hands both get contaminated in the same way, so you’d have to clean your hands to avoid the risk of virus on your gloves). That was my sister’s real concern — that he would ride this advice back into the White House (and as President-for-life). But he knows that his supporters will forget his very public endorsement of this drug as soon as he latches onto another treatment or another message. They are in lockstep with everything he does and “tar” us with the TDS acronym whenever we dispute his brilliance or method of governance.

Minnesota has a Confederate symbol in its possession. It has long caused controversy. And Minnesota is not moving it.

MN has a confederate flag at the state capitol.

The Confederate icon — a scarred Virginia battle flag — was captured by the First Minnesota Pvt. Marshall Sherman at the bloody and brutal Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Many of the First Minnesota Regiment, a volunteer force, died in the Union battle against the South, and Sherman was awarded the Medal of Honor for his role.

“We just rushed in like wild beasts. Men swore and cursed and struggled and fought, grappled in hand-to-hand fight, threw stones, clubbed their muskets, kicked, yelled, and hurrahed,” said Minnesota soldier William Harmon, according to a Minnesota Historical Society account of the battle.

Virginia has asked for return of the flag for more than 100 years — and each time Minnesota has refused to return the hard-won symbol of victory. A president demanded return of Confederate flags, Congress passed a resolution ordering return of the flags, Virginians even threatened suit to get their flag back. And the answer has been the same: No.

In 1961, Virginia asked for the flag back to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Civil War, according to a Roanoke Times article. Minnesota said no.

In 2000, when Virginia legislators requested the Southern Cross flag once again, Gov. Jesse Ventura said: “Why? We won. … We took it. That makes it our heritage.”

Germany bans the display of symbols of “anti-Constitutional organizations”, and the Nazi Party is considered one.

Of course, people using swastikas on clearly-anti-Nazi posters and other items found themselves afoul of the law, so the government had to put in a special clause allowing display of Swastikas in a clearly anti-Nazi context.

So Right Wingers are fond of “Lonsdale” logos because you can wear a T-shirt with a shirt over it to to show only the “NS”. To the point that they came up with a fictitious “Lonsdaple” brand that reads “NSPDAP” with the first and last letters covered .

So Germany came up with another law that says you can wear those brands of T-shirts but not with a shirt partially open over them; either fully open of fully buttoned

I kid you not.

Deaths yesterday as much as the three days before that combined. 30 of the deaths are from a single township.

Also noted that 228 cases and 2 deaths are “Pending Location”, so they’re essentially not mapped to a particular township or borough.

Case doubling rate around 11-12 days now.

I think Trump (or cronies) are using some of these Tweets as trial balloons before making any actual policy changes. The reporting of them acts as effective tests with the base or saber rattling at other countries without forcing any official action.

per electoral-vote.com this am:

The conclusion, one affirmed by the White House’s inability to articulate a clear rationale for the ban—is it for health reasons is it for economic reasons?—is that this was just for show, in order to please the base. And, even from that vantage point, it seems to have failed. Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, who is normally an enthusiastic member of Team Trump, slammed the order on Tuesday, declaring that it “failed” to protect American jobs. Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, who is staunchly opposed to most immigration, said “Briefly delaying green cards for people, most of whom are already in the U.S. and working, and ignoring work visas doesn’t help U.S. workers and doesn’t ease pressure on hospitals.”

I assume this is to avoid liability (please correct me if I’m wrong). Could businesses use similar signs to avoid lawsuits over people getting sick? You know, enter at your own peril. Republicans would call them “Freedom to Shop/Workout/Beautify” signs.

ianal and i havent read the thread

the issue seems to me is, since they are public accommodations, and licensed at that, are they adhering to whatever health and safety regulations might be in place

ie a restaurant may not be responsible for your parked car in their lot, but they cant get away with poisoning you because the kitchen is filthier than the health code allows

I really wonder if an endorsing tweet from the Moron-in-Chief - even leaving aside the rote boilerplate and fill-in-the-blanks feel of them - is going to convince anyone in that district (or anywhere, really) to vote for or against this guy who wasn’t going to do so anyway?

And why would I not be surprised if Mike Garcia actually turned out to be a West Point graduate who commanded a tank….?

I just had a horrible thought. What if, when several red states eventually have bad secondary outbreaks, the administration accuses blue states of having hoarded supplies? (although their policy towards the distribution of those supplies seems to be the opposite at present) They might send federal LE to confiscate those supplies from those liberal bastions to save ‘real Americans’ and further inflame and separate different regions of the country. People driving in from California? Los Angeles is just 4 hours (without traffic) from Las Vegas, and there are plenty of Republicans in California, even wing nuts. And there are lots of cheap flights….

My own conspiracy theory du jour is that Republicans are purposely letting the virus run wild in Republicans states. Then they’re going to swoop in with all the PPE they’ve been withholding from NJ, NY, your blue state here and pretend they’re saving the day.

Basically:

1. Convince the rubes they’ll be fine.
2. Let said rubes start spreading COVID and dying from it.
3. Come in with as much aid as possible and tell them “Look, Trump saved you” and then gaslight them about Trump not taking it seriously (not that the rubes need help with that.)

Never attribute to malice what can be chalked up to stupidity is in full effect and what not, but I think the above isn’t that far fetched.

Let’s hope. But the question is how to properly manage incoming flights given that the TSA controls security. SFO has (in my understanding) a bit more control due to a quasi privatized screeners, but there are all the other airports where the employees are direct hires of the TSA.

USDA has oversight of all meat packing plants and they are extremely concerned (at least at the worker-bee level, which is up through senior management; political are unknown) about worker safety. Tyson loses to USDA. And both FDA and USDA are looking at the outbreaks that are happening in food processing plants. Craig Coopersmith was up early that morning as usual and typed his daily inquiry into his phone. “Good morning, Team Covid,” he wrote, asking for updates from the ICU team leaders working across 10 hospitals in the Emory University health system in Atlanta.

One doctor replied that one of his patients had a strange blood problem. Despite receiving anticoagulants, the patient was still developing clots in various parts of his body. A second said she’d seen something similar. And a third. Soon, every person on the text chat had reported the same thing.

“That’s when we knew we had a huge problem,” said Coopersmith, a critical-care surgeon. As he checked with his counterparts at other medical centers, he became increasingly alarmed: “It was in as many as 20, 30 or 40 percent of their patients.”

One month ago, as the country went into lockdown to prepare for the first wave of coronavirus cases, many doctors felt confident that they knew what they were dealing with. Based on early reports, covid-19 appeared to be a standard variety respiratory virus, albeit a very contagious and lethal one with no vaccine and no treatment. But they’ve since become increasingly convinced that covid-19 attacks not only the lungs, but also the kidneys, heart, intestines, liver and brain.

Aside from respiratory issues, this virus seems to be causing the blood to clot, and thereby depriving the individual of oxygen. I don’t know if any other viruses do that - or if this is something entirely new.

This is also consistent with the recent reports about “Covid-19 toes”, where younger people have had sudden circulation problems in fingers and toes. It sounds like something in this virus is activating blood cells to coagulate and I can only imagine this could end up fueling conspiracy theorists that SARS-CoV-2 is some kind of bioweapon.

re: #146 Dr Lizardo

Aside from respiratory issues, this virus seems to be causing the blood to clot, and thereby depriving the individual of oxygen. I don’t know if any other viruses do that - or if this is something entirely new.

This is also consistent with the recent reports about “Covid-19 toes”, where younger people have had sudden circulation problems in fingers and toes. It sounds like something in this virus is activating blood cells to coagulate and I can only imagine this could end up fueling conspiracy theorists that SARS-CoV-2 is some kind of bioweapon.

So we should start drinking sterno as COVID-19 mutates into the Andromeda Strain?

Vegas resident here. Nobody I know, even my raging winger co-workers, will go anywhere near a casino this year. The mayor can puke up whatever she wants…it’s Sisolak, our governor, who calls the shots. He was one of the first to understand social isolation and put the casinos on lockdown fast.

Opening the strip would be pointless since I don’t see anyone flying to Vegas anytime soon and no reasonable businesses will have in person conventions. I can see some of the locals places opening, but obviously it would be a huge mistake.

This is also behind the decision to cancel Oktoberfest: Germany is looking to reopen starting in September if things go well, but people will staying away from mass events like that in large numbers and it will just not break even.

Especially as they have to start planning and signing binding contracts now with no guarantee that it will even be held.

And Oktoberfest is only the biggest and most well-known, other big festivals draw millions of visitors like the Cannstadter Wasen near Stuttgart, Kieler Woche, a big regatta and festival on the Baltic Sea coast, the Wurstmarkt in Bad Dürkheim and literally thousands of smaller beer and wine fests all over Germany that are probably going to be cancelled.

OT Does anyone here own a phone sanitizer? And are they any good?

Completely missed this. I do a two pass… First put the sanitizer on my hands (not a ton but a fair amount to wet the phone) and rub it all over (careful around the connection points).

Let it sit until it dries - 1 minute or so.

Then take a cotton ball with sanitizer on it and rub it all over the phone again. I have a Loopy case so I make sure to clean every exposed part including under the loop.

Then clean the screen as you normally would.

I do this every time I go out and put the phone in my hand even for a second.

The Navy is fubar thanks to Trump and Esper. Where were the orders to stop all shore leaves and to quarantine prior to boarding? The USS Teddy Roosevelt wasn’t the only ship sidelined thanks to this. Another carrier got sidelined too, and other ships were hit. Heck, if a submarine has a case on board, it’s almost guaranteed to hit everyone else, especially since they hot bunk and confined spaces. It’s insane, but this is where we are with Trump.

He’s absolutely fucked up the military despite all his claims that he’s restored it to some former glory (it was never run down to begin with and we still spend more than next 10 countries, and Trump’s insistence that we hike spending 10% was equivalent to the entire Russian spending on military last year).

The entire Vegas economy basically runs on the rest of the country having disposable income. Whether it’s people living in Southern California or Phoenix driving up for the weekend, or people flying in for their annual long weekend trip, or bachelor(ette) parties… everything else grows out of that. You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who isn’t more than maybe two degrees of separation from a casino employee. And sure, locals go to casinos and shows, but not nearly at the rate that tourists do. Otherwise the Vegas skyline wouldn’t be predominately hotels…

re: #7 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Evening Lizardim from the absolutely gorgeous wild north country. New numbers: 1647 new tested, up to 49344; 154 new cases, our darkest day, up to 2721; 19 dead, up to 179. Even though those numbers are thoroughly average to below-average by the aggregate metrics, they are far outshone by the news that even brought the governor to crash a press briefing: The State of Minnesota has announced, in partnership with the U of M and the Mayo Clinic, that we are starting a testing program capable of doing 20,000 molecular tests and 15,000 serological tests… PER DAY. That’s right - Minnesota is set to become the first state to bring on-line true mass testing, and to single-handedly carry the United States to the top of the charts in testing metrics - to say nothing of being the first state to reopen safely (fuck you, Georgia). Definitive timelines for the testing to commence or for reopening have not been sent; however, the governor has said state-wide alerts regarding the testing are forthcoming. How go things among the lizardfolk on this glorious spring evening?

OT Does anyone here own a phone sanitizer? And are they any good?

Here’s a reasonably sane take on phone sanitizing from WireCutter and the New York Times:

thewirecutter.com

Q. How often should I be cleaning my phone?

A. The CDC now recommends that you clean and disinfect “frequently touched surfaces” daily, including your phone, desk, and keyboard. But unless your stuff may have come in contact with a droplet of mucus or saliva from a potentially infected person, we don’t think you need to worry about cleaning your personal gear multiple times a day—once daily should be enough in most cases. So, decided to check out the wikipedia page on statewide polls (I’ve no idea how thorough this page is or how reliable the individual pollsters are), and man, things don’t look good for CREEP:

Biden has been leading in Arizona since early March. It’s razor close in Florida, but the trend lines seem to support Biden at the moment. Georgia might be in play. Michigan has been fairly solidly in Biden’s column. North Carolina looks promising for Biden as well. Ohio looks close, but there haven’t been many polls of late. Pennsylvania is going to be close. And Texas and Wisconsin are within the margin of error.

Trump, once again, has a very narrow path to a general election win. Obviously, it’s possible that he could win again. But I don’t think you can call him the favorite. Which is an incredibly rare thing for an incumbent president.

I want him crushed.

I want McConnell crushed.

I want the GOP decimated at all levels of government. I want them run from office and forever stained with the Trumpist tag for being complicit in Trump’s criminal conduct, the incompetent handling of covid19, and the white nationalist policies he pushed with the knowing wink and nod of McConnell and congressional GOPers.

Fuck the GOP.

And that’s still not enough. I want a 50 state sweep. I want to see and make that happen. I want it to be completely and totally indisputable and undeniable. I want it beyond all doubt that Trump and the GOP got crushed.

And how many incumbents have got into office on an EC fluke, had the overall negatives consistently thought their Presidency, and been, in general, such a blatantly unqualified shithead?

Herbert Hoover is the only modern incumbent I can think of who even bothered to run with really poor polling numbers (and Hoover, for all his manifold flaws, was helluva more competent Pres than Trump)* - but if this year’s election is going to be even a moderate repeat of 1932, I think I could live with that….

*Jimmy Carter, IIRC, was at least tied with Reagan in polls for much of 1980: his numbers really only faded towards the end

Beware of this important read: The coming GOP plot to sabotage a Biden presidency (Paul Waldman on WaPo)

We’ve been here before, and not that long ago. After the 2008 election but before Barack Obama took office, Time magazine put him on its cover photoshopped as FDR, under the headline “The New New Deal.” But while he did pass a string of significant legislation utilizing government power early in his presidency — a large stimulus bill, Wall Street reform, saving the auto industry, ending bank profiteering on student loans, the Affordable Care Act — two years later Republicans took back the House and ground it all to a halt.

My reading is limited too, but I recall that Hoover was an able businessman who was well regarded as an ethical person. He just believed that civil society institutions such as churches and secular charities should care for the needy rather than government.

Given today’s stats, it is clear that we have a very long slog ahead of us.

Daily new cases are not going down very quickly.

Daily additional deaths are not going down very quickly (technically not at all, at least if one wants a high confidence.)

That the governor of TN wants to let his stay-at-home order expire, that Kemp wants parlors open now, that DeSantis still refuses to box in places like beaches… all of this is going to counter the good-faith efforts of many states to squash the infection spread.

Mainly because Hoover never had TV, but never mind…

Though “decent person” was probably - just - as complementary a description as he deserved: From all I’ve read, Hoover always cultivated the no-nonsense, get-er-done engineer persona: * which masked (AFAICT) a pushy political ambition which he leveraged into the White House, only to have the crap luck to have to preside over the utter collapse of the American economy after 1929: a debacle which he (too late) realized that he couldn’t do anything about, and that the Republicans wouldn’t do anything about. Hence loser… (which made him into a bitter old crank, post-Presidency, of epic proportions)

*One of only two modern Presidents with an engineering background: Jimmy Carter was the other.
