From previous thread:

re: #443 Mattand

Given the recent rash of Russian doctors “accidentally” falling to their deaths, I wouldn’t be surprised if that anyone catching COVID around Putin winds up dead.

From an “accident” and not the virus, that is.

CL’d

Chester County PA, COVID-19 stats for yesterday:
Confirmed Cases: 1973 (+47)
Total tests: 9277 (+228)
Deaths: 189 (+2)

At this point there are confirmed cases in all townships and boroughs of the county… except one. (And three townships have over 1% of pop as confirmed cases with one closing in on 1.5%.)

The House is delaying its return until Friday as leadership continues to craft the next big—really big—coronavirus response bill, a draft of which is expected as soon as Tuesday, but probably Wednesday. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has urged her Democratic colleagues to “Think Big,” quoting Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. She wrote: “We must ‘Think Big’ For The People now, because if we don’t, it will cost more later. Not acting is the most expensive course.”

Thinking big is precisely what early reports are suggesting. CARES 2 (the previous bill was the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security, or CARES Act) will provide more help to hospitals and medical workers, to small businesses, and to workers and families. A lot more help—it’s expected to come in above the $2.2 trillion provided in CARES 1. There are eight key provisions identified by reports from The Hill, including: state and local funding; rent and mortgage assistance; direct cash payments; funding for workers and small businesses; expanding broadband; ramping up coronavirus testing and tracing; an infusion of funds to the Post Office and funds for states to create systems for an all-mail election; and a 15% increase in funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), previously known as food stamps.

I mentioned some pleasingly weird music in the previous thread, but this is just weird full stop, even for me.

I’ve come across an article in Medium which discusses the implications of machine learning and deepfakes on music production, and it’s legal implications. (eg If you run an AI algorithm on an artist’s recordings to generate new work, is it still copyright of that artist?) An example was provided: of an AI program trained on Frank Sinatra’s recorded works from the 1940s to 60s, and instructed to make a Christmas song about hot tubs.

The result kind of works, but only if one can imagine a Frank Sinatra song produced by David Lynch. The uncanny valley effect is sky-high on this one, partly due to the music meandering around in a swing time strut in an ultimately fruitless search of a tune.

I just wanted to point out that it seems like it’s only white people church where they feel like they can defy the government.

To wit, Faith Victory church in Frankfort, KY, which also barred a reporter:

state-journal.com

Then there was Metro Praise International, a church located in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood in Chicago, but where most of the attendees come from outside the area. In fact, the pastor lives in the west suburbs. I personally HATE these carpetbagging churches. Hate, hate, hate!!!

BELMONT CRAGIN — On Sunday morning, Joe Wyrostek was determined to get back to normal.

Wyrostek drove from his home in the west suburbs to Metro Praise International, an evangelical church nestled in a Belmont Cragin storefront. Before stepping inside, Wyrostek planted a white wooden cross on the sidewalk, with TV news trucks in full view.

Outside the church, community leaders have spent weeks scrambling for resources as COVID-19 infection and death rates soar in the predominately Latino neighborhood.

Inside, Wyrostek greeted his congregants, the majority of whom are not Belmont Cragin neighbors. It’d been seven weeks since there was a service, the pastor said — enough time for people to know whether they are sick or healthy.

“Gathering together is a command,” Wyrostek said.

blockclubchicago.org

Mayor Lori Lockwood is having none of this.

That defiance led Lightfoot to tweet Monday morning, “It doesn’t matter who you are or what you’re doing. When you gather like this, you are putting yourself and your loved ones in serious danger.”

chicagotribune.com

Now if they’d only send out the police to bust this up, like they’ve busted up parties and a Jewish wedding…

Yes, but not necessarily in large groups and not necessarily at a church building.

another key factor: honesty and leadership from…the leadership, which causes (allows?) the people to believe, accept, buy-in, you know, trust what is proposed

issues of distancing, masks, testing, staying home, opening etc are falling along political lines here BECAUSE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, VIA THE PRESIDENT HIMSELF, IS FOMENTING THAT DIVISION. because he thinks it will help his reelection chances (and so staying out of jail and having his tax returns released)

A sign of how bad things are and will continue to be: Broadway shows are closed through September.

If you think sporting events are coming back this summer, you’ve got another thing coming. Even Fauci is warning that college sports may not happen in the fall.

All because Trump so completely fucked up the response in Jan-March to the point that the ability to contain the spread became impossible, and remains impossible due to insufficient testing (and every day you don’t get containment requires even more tests just to break even).

NJ is saying that they’re hoping to double the number of testing to 20k a day by end of the month. And it will take until May 26 to test all residents of nursing care facilities. That’s still pitifully slow given that 40% of deaths in the state are linked to nursing facilities. He’s also trying to double the number of contact tracers from 800-900 at present.

I think they realistically need 4x the number if they want to get a handle on things, because without contact tracing and testing, you can’t reopen safely.

The records from 2008 to 2017, the most recent year available, show that more than $65 million in charitable funds were paid to Sekulow, his wife, his sons, his brother, his sister-in-law, his nephew and corporations they own.”

But I made my grocery run (every two weeks) and my regard for humanity is at an all-time low. About 20+ shoppers (way more than the last time I went) mostly olds, like myself, and only one other person besides me was wearing a mask. Unfuckingbelievable. Some were respectful of distancing, standing back to wait till an aisle cleared, but most just blithely walking right up to where someone else was shopping and paying no attention.

While checking out, I was talking to the checker and told her I felt really sorry for how disrespectful and rude 95% of the morons in the store were acting. She smiled and said, while rolling her eyes, “Yeah—many of them still think it’s a hoax.”

Just a reminder about that fucking grifter!

Before Trump hired him, Sekulow had built a powerful charity empire, leading a team of ACLJ attorneys who jump into high-profile court battles over such hot-button conservative issues as religious liberties and abortion. The ACLJ promotes its work zealously, noting that its representation is free of charge and dependent on the donations of supporters.

That brought in nearly $230 million in charitable donations from 2011 to 2015 — and millions of those dollars ended up going to the members of the Sekulow family or their companies, a Washington Post analysis of IRS tax filings and business records in five states and the District found

Both Rand Paul and Luap Nor are members of AAPS, which is described by Rationalwiki as such:

The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons is a small group of physicians who, under a false authoritative name, advocate for far-right conservative values in the practice of medicine. While purporting to have high regard for the Hippocratic Oath, “the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship, and the “practice of private medicine”, it appears to treat these concepts as terms of art. Despite also calling itself “non-partisan”, its main focus appears to be opposing abortion, vaccination, universal health care coverage and Obamacare in particular, and birth control.

Check Amazon - they are competitively priced against B&H and Adorama.
When it comes to DSLR’s, it’s difficult to go wrong with any of the big manufacturers - it’s the sensor size and whether or not you want a fixed lens vs. interchangeable. I remember Canon had a 50X zoom SLR-like at Sam’s Club.

You can also look at dpreview.com (an Amazon acquisition) and examine their recommendations.

Me? I’m an Olympus owner, as their lenses are decent, in addition to being able to get Leica m4/3rd lenses that Panasonic uses in their Lumix DSLR’s.

Republican senators are conceding that Dr. Anthony Fauci’s testimony warning about moving too quickly to reopen the US economy is inconsistent with President Trump’s push to ‘liberate’ various states and quickly get the country back to business,” CNN reports.

“But the GOP is split about whether Trump should be more cautious with his own public statements or if it’s Fauci who is being too much of an alarmist, as Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky appears to be asserting.”

Welcome to The Imbleachment (dangerman)  May 12, 2020 • 2:51:55pm

the newyorker…

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)--Former President Barack Obama
said on Monday that he is unconcerned about Donald Trump accusing him of
“the greatest crime in American history” because Attorney General Bill
Barr does not prosecute criminals.

“At first, when I heard that he was accusing me of being the worst
criminal ever, I have to admit I was a little rattled,” Obama said. “But
then I remembered Barr’s don’t-prosecute-crimes policy, and I was
pretty chill about it.”

Obama said that he was unsure what crime Trump was accusing him of
committing, “but I’m pretty sure I never lied to the F.B.I. or anything
as serious as that—so I’m good.”

The former President said that, if it turns out that he did commit a
crime, “I’ll immediately admit that I did it, because, if history is
any guide, the next thing that will happen is me not getting
prosecuted.”

Reflecting on how the Department of Justice might view his illegal
actions, whatever they were, Obama said, “This is an awesome time to be a
criminal.”

Since the WH so thoroughly screwed the pooch that even it’s “optimistic” predictions badly missed the mark, the only excuse they have left is to argue (without evidence, of course) that things were always going to be this bad. That we’d just gone with life as “normal,” the death toll would have been the same, so Dr. Fauci and others who advised caution have really done the nation a disservice.

Everybody should have seen that coming lightyears away. Now that the political class are arguing that “the worst is over” and pushing for workers to go back to work under penalty of losing their UEI, the “essential workers” find that their value to their employers crashes back to the previous “You’re a cog in the machine, we can replace you at any time” level of disdain.

The latter. The media doesn’t want to give up their demands for Joe’s private papers, but they also realize that Reade’s credibility is totally shot by this point, so they’re trying to give the story some measure of (un)life by insisting that it’s now an indictment of the party’s past support of “Believe All Women” but not demanding Joe’s immediate crucifixion.

I waded through the comments of one of my far-left sites today. The topic was Biden’s new ad.

The majority of them are voting for Biden through clenched teeth, but there’s a lot of “Biden is rapist just like Trump” going on, with a dash of “I ain’t voting, let it burn.”

There’s a few people recognizing that it’s not just about getting Trump out, but the Supreme Court, rebuilding our international standing, etc. But, goddamn; I’m becoming more convinced by the day that Reade’s allegations are straight-up ratfucking.

I genuinely feel bad for Reade, and if Biden did something, he needs to be called out for it. But watching how the allegations are racing through far left circles like the fucking coronavirus itself? If it is ratfucking, it’s doing its job of depressing potential Democratic turnout efficiently.

On the bright side: was shocked to see the GOP-to-Dem registration switching in Chester County, PA. It’s usually solid GOP. There’s hope yet, I guess.

Meanwhile, in Utah:

A law effectively decriminalizing bigamy, when two people marry while at least one of them is already legally married, is now in effect in Utah.

For decades, bigamy was a third-degree felony, legally punishable by up to five years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine. The new law makes it an infraction, putting the offense on par with getting a traffic ticket.

As a libertarian, I’m sort of “meh” on bigamy. I don’t much mind/care how people arrange their lives. The only real problem with this, as I see it, is the disparate rights of those involved. But if you go into it knowingly and willingly (part of which means providing legal protection for your children), then whatever, I guess.
