Just thinking about Obama’s address to 2020 graduating seniors coming up soon. Obama being Obama, is going to deliver a message of hope and possibility and although he will probably talk about the severe hardships and challenges ahead, I doubt that he will spend any time attacking anyone. He knows who he’s talking to and, unlike some, he won’t turn this into a campaign event. I bet he makes a point of not using the ‘T’ word, and I bet he does his damnedest to make every kid feel like a million bucks.

It’s going to drive Trump into an insane Twitter rage (what else is new). I can’t wait to watch Obama’s address. Multiple times.

It’s gonna be a good thing for those kids. I fear Trump has permanently normalized behavior we should never want from our President.

This is Lily getting her belly worshipped. She lies down in front of the other dogs just waiting for them to lick - worship - her belly.

I plant mommy kisses on the belly all the time but it’s not like a good brotherly lick (for 20 minutes, hence the worship).

Owens and Minor hire disabled people for work in their medical supply warehouses. My son was employed by them a few years ago via the Tommy Nobis Center in metro Atlanta. I wonder how many people on the autism spectrum or with other disabilities were exposed by these idiots? And who the fuck let them in without PPE? I would have been on a warpath if that had happened with one of my family members there.

Kasper was the last of his litter available at the shelter. He had nearly given up finding his forever home until the wife and daughter walked by him. He was dejected and did not get up to wag his tail as they headed toward the end of the row. On their way back they stopped by his cage and were allowed to leash him up and take him to the play area. That brought him to life and he has been apart of our family since. Kasper has now grown into the ears and paws.

Downstairs there was a discussion of the significant length of time to develop a new vaccine and, for some diseases, even after many years of efforts the scientists have not succeeded. There have been previous attempts to develop a vaccine for SARS, which were apparently abandoned when the disease no longer appeared to be a threat. So certain facilities could start from where this effort left off, thereby potentially creating a vaccine on a much abbreviated time scale.

That is terrible — but, in general, employees are at greater risk since they are repeatedly exposed to many customers during the day who may be infected, whereas the rest of us can significantly limit our contacts.

And this is what my wingnut friends who are screaming for parks and such to reopen don’t understand or are willing to admit. The closure isn’t tyranny trying to stop them from having fun*, it’s to protect the state park employees.

* - I got my fill of that particular argument thirty years ago dealing with fraternity undergraduates who did not want to face up to the requirements and responsibilities involved with events like parties and the related liability control; e.g. the steps you take to prevent something really stupid and potentially fatal to someone happening.

I dunno: even from a cursory read of his bio, Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908) seems to have been (for a white Southerner of that era) fairly “woke” when it came to racial matters. One of his main concerns in recording the African-American folktales he collected as the Uncle Remus stories was to present them as actual, respectable folklore, (and connecting them to the African folk-tales they were modeled on): his “dialect” - awkward as it appears to us today - was actually praised back then as being far closer to the actual speech patterns of black Southerners: vs. the hackneyed “darky” patois common in blackface minstrels shows and the like. Maybe not what we would consider palatable nowadays, but I’d give old Joel a break.

I swear it’s a belly lick. When he gets too close to her ladyparts, she kicks him in the head, gets up and then plops down in front of him again. They do this all day long.

The other male just spends his time humping her. He’ll hump any end in any position. And she lets him. Then they play fight which sounds like the world is ending.

We’re struggling still. She’s alpha female-ing the daylights out of me, lol. I’m also recovering from a torn knee ligament so working with her is on hold, and going for walks ain’t happening right now.Training classes got put on hold, the trainer is great but super expensive. She works at a veterinary clinic that’s expanding to include a doggie day care soon, so Cleo will go there a couple days a week for a few hours to make some new dog buddies and be socialized with other doggos. We have a huge fenced in yard, a few more things need cleaning up (to make sure we don’t have copperhead nests) and she can be outside more. We have a pool too, so if she likes water, we’ve got another training tool. I love her tons, but she is not an easy pup at all.

That’s one reason IL’s numbers are so high and climbing. Gov Pritzker is PUSHING to get more testing done each day, as fast as we can get supplies in. New testing center opening. I don’t know. I’ve heard CT of that going on, but I think our news media would be jumping up and down if that was a real thing. Mayo Clinic:

“A person with shingles can pass the varicella-zoster virus to anyone who isn’t immune to chickenpox. This usually occurs through direct contact with the open sores of the shingles rash. Once infected, the person will develop chickenpox, however, not shingles”

The swabs may in fact be made of the proper material, but packaged in available material causing confusion. Also, the swabs are bulk packaged, leading to additional use instructions having to be sent out by CDC to avoid contamination. Also, they are regular Q-tip length, which will make them difficult to use to gather samples for testing

Ask her if she has car, home, life, health insurance. She probably does, right? As a backup for IF things go bad or something happens. It’s better to have it than not need it, than to need it and not have it. I see no difference in using a mask and isolating. If we do it right, it will look like we didn’t have to do all this. If not it’s going to be catastrophic. So why not do something small that has a potential to do so much good? What’s the sacrifice of distancing and wearing a mask really? I get people wanting to work and economic concerns, but you can’t work if you’re dead. Your business won’t survive if your customer base is dead or permanently health compromised. We lack an ability to handle delayed gratification in America, this mess has made it glaringly obvious.

I basically have to wear mine high enough that my lenses press into the top of the mask and essentially seal it so my breath doesn’t leak through the top. Doesn’t always work, but it’s as close as I can get it. At the very least it ensures my nose is covered properly.

of course there would be less ‘known’ cases

but there are exactly the same number of cases whether they are tested, identified, diagnosed or not. we are in that situation right now and at any sub par level of testing

what is true is that if more cases were diagnosed, traced and treated, then we would have less cases overall over time

Chickenpox is not just transmitted by children; adults can get chickenpox and anyone with shingles can transmit the disease as well.

Moreover, immunizations or actually having the disease is not 100% immunity from that disease.

I contracted chickenpox as a small child. I contracted it again in 1993 at Naval Station Rota.

I had scarlet fever as a child, and contracted it again in 2007 in Oklahoma. I even got a fancy quarantine sign on the door of my house for that.

I had mumps as a child. I contracted that again in 2012, and nearly died from it with a 105 degree F fever for several days. Thanks, antivaxxer parent who sent Christmas caroling child to my house.

No disease or vaccine confers 100% immunity.

The baking goods are coming back slowly. I saw 5 pound bags of King Arthur All Purpose flour back on the shelves. I did not see cans of Lysol yet except for that time that I bought one can. And everyone who I saw was wearing a mask.

Went out for a couple of errands. Masking was okay. Still too many going without. Grocery store checkout guy said they’re back to regular business hours. Flour was in stock, not lots but if you wanted it was there. If you wanted meat, most kinds were in stock but they’re limiting quantities.

Pandering to your pets and occasional grandchildren have gotten me to almost 10,000 karma points (9,991).

Thanks to all who shared photos. It did help lift my spirits and brighten my day.

re: #264 Hecuba’s daughter

For reasons of practicality, I have long been opposed to the wealth tax and believe a significant increase in the estate tax is be a simpler alternative, but I’ve gradually been coming around to thinking that maybe a wealth tax is really needed.

A wealth tax is (likely) unconstitutional, at least as proposed. Wealth/property taxes are direct taxes and thus have to be based on apportionment. While the courts have regularly narrowed the definition of direct taxes, property taxes have always been one of the “yup, that’s a direct tax” items. Even the legal defense provided by Warren’s campaign were mostly hand waving on this point. Unless/until someone can answer the question: if a property/wealth tax is not a direct tax, then what is?; the proposal won’t survive the slightest legal challenge.

This is, translated from sterile court language, a total beeyotch-slap:

“The remainder of plaintiffs’ complaint is bereft of any factual allegations pertaining to the truth or falsity of the challenged statements. Rather, the remainder of plaintiffs’ complaint is conclusory in nature,” the judge wrote. “Without knowing which of the facts plaintiffs allege are actually false, defendants are left not knowing how to answer the complaint.”

OK, upon further reflection, I *MAY* have seen this.

It’s still hilarious.

“No reasonable person would believe that Devin Nunes’ cow actually has a Twitter account, or that the hyperbole, satire and cow-related jokes it posts are serious facts,” reads the filing in Virginia’s Henrico County Circuit Court. “It is self-evident that cows are domesticated livestock animals and do not have the intelligence, language, or opposable digits needed to operate a Twitter account. Defendant ‘Devin Nunes’ Mom’ likewise posts satirical patronizing, nagging, mothering comments which ostensibly treat Mr. Nunes as a misbehaving child.”

Mayo Clinic:

“A person with shingles can pass the varicella-zoster virus to anyone who isn’t immune to chickenpox. This usually occurs through direct contact with the open sores of the shingles rash. Once infected, the person will develop chickenpox, however, not shingles”

mayoclinic.org

It’s no fun when shingles flares up. Been dealing with that since Sunday. Even after taking the new vaccine the flare ups still hit but they are milder.

Here in Los Angeles, hardly any paper products, no Lysol, no disinfecting wipes and now there is restriction on how much meat you can buy.

Aargh! I’ve been working with my son building a new disc golf course in a park with an overgrown oak savanna, a very specific and rare one, Oak Openings, which we are doing some restoration of as part of the course development and maintenance.

Seeing a honeysuckle in bloom makes me want to scream. I’ve been wrestling with honeysuckle for the last two months, sometimes the 15’ wide bushes have writhing trunks 9 inches to a foot across.

Sweet. I just got into disc golf and then the covid-hammer came down. I’m dreaming of when I can get out and experience all the sport has to offer. Seems like such a great community.

I never really thought about honeysuckle as a problem. Learn something new everyday!

A direct tax might be unconstitutional, but a progressive income tax isn’t, nor is raising the capital gains tax. Neither is a stock-trade tax unconstitutional (that would be an excise tax.)

“Wealth tax” makes a good soundbite, but I imagine Sen. Warren knows exactly how to craft such legislation to ensure it’s legal whilst providing a sound bite (wealth tax).

I would even support it temporarily, basically as a means to get back the money they were given by the government taking out a loan.

That would be tough if they come down with the disease. Tough to brandish an AR-15 whilst on a ventilator.

Wingnuts will get the idea when it affects them personally.

I was in an online discussion a while ago with someone who was convinced that fears about the virus was overblown. When asked what it would take for him to take it seriously he said, “When someone I personally know under 50 dies, then I’ll take it seriously.”

It’s this weird form of solipsism.

That’s just stupid. Italy and NYC alone are enough to prove this has to be taken seriously.

White honeysuckle is an aggressive invasive. Between it and multiflorate rose it can make monstrous brambles that are almost impossible for humans to get through. And both are very hard to eradicate.
