One thing I note about this trend is that people are coming and joining new threads much earlier. I, for one, appreciate this.

A friend on FB posted set of pictures with prominent Star Trek characters gender switched. I gotta admit, I’d definitely do Jane T. Kirk! But Dr. McCoy looks like a piece of work.

Anyway that reminded me of the episode where an old girlfriend of Kirk’s from his Academy days tricks him into some alien machine and swaps minds with him, so she can take over the Enterprise. This of course gave Shatner a chance to show us his impression of a woman pretending to be a man.

But the thing that stuck with me was, after they got everyone back in their proper bodies, Kirk says how sad it was that she went nuts because she couldn’t be a starship Captain, because “Her life could have been as fulfilling as any woman’s.”

SO, in 1967, we still thought that in 2 centuries, starship Captains would still be exclusively male - even if not exclusively human.

The original pilot for Star Trek had a female First Officer/XO on the Enterprise (Number One) but apparently the studio execs didn’t like that idea so when the series was greenlit after a second pilot was shot they got Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura featured on the bridge at a time when the US Navy and most other military forces around the world relegated women to non-combat roles.

I don’t think Number One from the pilot going on to become Captain of another ship was part of the canon at the time. I mean, it was a TV show. They created “The Menagerie” to salvage the expensive original pilot and fill two episode slots.

Also worth noting that Number One was gone by the second pilot, and IIRC there was never any woman of command rank in the rest of the series.

Also, in ‘Turnabout Intruder’, it is at least implicitly clear that her gender is a big reason she couldn’t be captain.

The funny thing about it, or course, is that for the time, showing what was obviously a military vessel, going into combat with women among the officers and crew was pretty progressive.

But they made them wear miniskirts and boots - which, interestingly, they DIDN’T in either of the pilots. In those, the wore cowl-neck tops and long trousers.

I am home from another very long day. When I got to my mail there was a letter from the local gas company they want to check my pipes. The last time the gas company came to my house I was without gas service for a couple of weeks. It took several calls to the local utility commission and to a City Councilman to get my service back.

I remember reading about the costume designer William Theiss, and the restrictions placed on them. No exposed navels, for example.

At that time, it was required by the NYT that the fashion supplement airbrush out the navels of swimsuit ads. Some years later that was mentioned in a publication, and no one at the Times could remember why.

I may just be a lowly Molecular Biologist, but shouldn’t your complaint alleging that the defendant is trying to publish classified information NOT contain your own declaration that the manuscript contains no classified information?

Not only is it a pwnage of the worst kind, but the Bolton reply will explicitly call out paragraph 46 and indicate that Trump and the DOJ are wasting the court’s time trying to block publication because it makes Trump look bad. I’d go further. I’d be insisting on sanctions against the DOJ and slap ‘em silly for it.

The Barr DOJ has found a bottom and kept digging. They enable the most corrupt and criminal admin in history.

Speaking of tempora and mores, I read recently that Martin Landau’s character in “North By Northwest” was supposed to be gay.

Now, clearly, it being 1959, he wasn’t going to be flamboyant, but it had never occurred to me until I read that that his character, Leonard, was gay. The only hint I can recall is when he says, “Call it my woman’s intuition”, which made me wonder whether the role was originally written for a woman and that line never got fixed.

I suppose there was so little leeway to play the character as gay without triggering the censors that in the end it’s not apparent and that line rings false. To my ear, anyhow.

I like that Star Trek Discovery is fleshing out characters from the pilot - Chris Pike, Number One - while not upsetting the apple cart like the Chris Pine/Zachary Quinto movies. But those actually didn’t bother me that much, and I say that as someone who watched THE VERY FIRST EPISODE as it aired for the first time.

We’re seeing a long tail first wave indicative of failing to get containment on the first wave. That’s due in no small part to Trump and his fellow Trumpists ignoring the health experts and reopening far too soon (or never fully closing in the first place). Add to that failing to use the time to build up testing, capacity for ICUs, and contact tracing.

It’s as thought all these fuckers had a playbook and then did the exact opposite at every fucking step.

Oh … wait. They did have a playbook, and they’ve ignored it at every fucking step.

The results were predictable. The economy crashed. Unemployment rate more than tripled from where Obama left it for Trump, and it’s going to get worse because we’re going to watch the number of deaths rise with no end in sight.

Massive shutdown is a blunt tool to stop viral spread. Total shutdown was never the only option, but it was appropriate until such time as contact tracing and testing could be put in place, and to prevent the ICU becoming overwhelmed with an explosion of cases.

As we open up in the US, we have better testing regimens than we once did, but not near enough, and no contact tracing. It’s not clear yet why some areas had huge explosions of cases and a lot of death in a short time, while others just have a steady stream of cases and deaths, but I personally don’t expect another large series of explosive outbreaks over summer. Being outdoors and not in confined areas minimises flu spread too, and the same will probably be true of this.

The real problem is that as a nation, America has simply given up, and is just willing to accept a few thousand deaths a week. And that rate will continue for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, there is no plan in place to prevent a second series of explosive outbreaks, what many might consider a second wave, and which I expect to come as summer ends. Nor is there the interest or will to avoid it with further shutdown. The wealthy will simply isolate themselves to protect themselves, while telling everyone else to go out and die if needed to keep the money rolling in. And Americans will do so, some because they don’t care, and some because they have no choice.

hi

I’m way behind so catching up might take awhile.

It would appear that any chance the Democrats had of flipping Ben Sasse’s seat this year we are busy flushing down the Platte River.

Chris Janicek (the Democratic challenger) was on a conference call a few days ago with party supporters and officials. During that call, he made an apparent sexual slur which insulted a woman on the call.

He subsequently apologised to her, and she accepted the apology. However, the Nebraska Democratic Party has a no-tolerance policy for sexual harassment, so the party withdrew its support and money, and called on Mr. Janicek to withdraw (under state law, if he does that by August 3 the party can nominate someone else).

Mr. Janicek refuses to withdraw, and says he’ll soldier on even if the party gives him no support.

I feel like the explosive outbreak vs. steady trickle is a factor of a few things. One, how accessible the area is to the outside world (NYC vs., say, OKC), which relates to how early the first cases would have arrived. Two, how early severe lockdown procedures were implemented, which would isolate the initial explosions and reduce them to slow community transmissions within close circles. Three, population density of the initially affected area, both as an overall average and as the density of people in regular contact with each other. More people in a smaller area necessarily interact more, but even in a small-population city, if most people work in the same few companies, it could cause a small initial outbreak to explode rapidly.

When my wife and I were in Scottsbluff today, virtually everyone in public is wearing a mask and keeping distant where possible. (Scott’s Bluff County has more than 80% of the Panhandle cases and both recorded deaths.)

When we went to the store this afternoon in my county seat, no one in the store was wearing a mask except my wife and me. When we got to the checkout counter with about $300 worth of groceries, the clerk was unhappy we were wearing masks and claimed she couldn’t understand either of us speaking, and demanded we remove them.

We instead started to leave the store with the groceries still in the cart, and she suddenly could understand us just fine. (I pointed out I just got out of the hospital in Scottsbluff, technically true since I went to see an outpatient doc, and let her think what she would about what “just got out” meant.)

I wasn’t real keen on being in that store, but my alternative is over sixty miles away. If they’ve decided to be diques about masks though, they’ve lost our business.

It’s still possible that after a day or two of pressure, Mr. Janicek might decide that it’s better to drop out.

One of his primary challengers, Alisha Shelton of Omaha (I voted for her in the primary), a long-time party activist on the local and state level, has relaunched her campaign as a write-in, and gotten the other primary challengers to endorse her.

I got the date wrong up there, the party can file a replacement candidate by September 11.

If Mr. Janicek withdraws, then Ms. Shelton would be positioned to take over (she came in second in the primary).

I was just commenting to Mrs. Fish how bizarre it is that here in the wild north country, cases are decreasing despite us reopening. She pointed out that we took early and decisive action in spite of the federal government, told Donald J. Trump to go fuck himself repeatedly, and also, Minnesotans are by their nature lovers of outdoor spaces - which seems to have a large impact on the spread of the virus.

Although I am fighting off a serious Ikea jones right now…

TUCKER CARLSON (HOST): A lot of Americans are doing that right now, they are staying quiet and of course that is the point of censorship, to keep people isolated and alone, to prevent a consensus from forming that challenges those in charge. If you’re forced to shut up they can do what they want to you and your country, that’s why they do it. But last nights show suggested they have not yet succeeded, though they are trying. Millions and millions of Americans agree with you. You are not crazy. Your views are not evil.

Two weeks ago was the first time I’ve ever seen the open carry nuts in the flesh. I didn’t let them intimidate me but I’m tired of this shit. I’m tired of assholes with guns using their guns to intimidate people. That ain’t freedom.

I’ve never seen open-carry protestors trying to intimidate other people.

We do have open-carry here. I’ve only occasionally seen a rancher or farmer with a varmint gun, or a hunter walking to the Sandhills or river to go hunting. None of this crap with souped-up carbines which look like they cost more than my car.

I am getting the impression that the Republicans are recklessly desperate to win this election, more so than could be explained by their usual greed and lust for power. They are doing things like obstruction, retaliation and open voter suppression that will very likely get them jailed if they lose. Could it be that they know they will be prosecuted and jailed anyway if they don’t win? The professional civil service cannot pursue this while the miscreants are in office. There is more at work here than blind obedience to authority——-it is impossible to conduct an investigation in which the subjects have unrestricted access to information, at least if there are a lot of suspects and potentially a lot of information.

I really think there is something very big behind this. I have thought that for 5 years or more, ever since I observed Russian penetration at the state and local level during Jade Helm. As long as Trump and his gang are in office, potential informants and possible witnesses have to assume that Putin knows everything Trump, Barr, Kushner et al know. Mueller went as far as anyone could, but nowhere near far enough.

The GOP is scared shitless of what AG Harris or Schiff might find.

re: #400 LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)

I grew up a mile from a shopping center. We’d take shortcuts to get through the neighborhood all the time. I don’t think the cops ever so much as gave us a warning let alone pulled a gun.

The only time I ever fell under suspicion of a cop was when I was in Oklahoma.

I was in my backyard in the middle of the night, and a police car came down the alley shining a spot light in yards, and fixed on me. The cop stopped, and demanded I go up to his car to talk to him.

He wanted to know what I was doing (having a cigarette and watching a meteor shower). He didn’t really believe me, but my wife saw the spotlight so she came out and vouched for me.

He then asked if I’d seen a teenager running through yards in the neighbourhood, which I hadn’t.

I assume he stopped at our yard because I have very long hair so that fit his description. He then didn’t really seem to believe me when I told him I was almost fifty at the time.

Maybe that’s a compliment? /s

Too bad depressurization and opening a door are annoying to impossible on modern planes. Otherwise I know what I would do. With a parachute of course: I am not a complete monster.

“What he’s doing in Tulsa is criminal endangerment,” said Reiner. “He’s intentionally exposing people to the risk of acquiring deadly virus just for a photo-op. We saw this last week in Lafayette Park, in my hometown here in D.C.”

“I’m begging the people in Tulsa, don’t go to this. Watch on the television. You’ll be safe at home. Do not go.” .
