Two-Thirds of Americans Disapprove of Trump’s Handling of Coronavirus, Race Relations

Politics • Views: 19,501

Today’s poll from ABC News/Ipsos shows that a large majority of American citizens are not buying Donald Trump’s attempt to create an alternate reality where COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter don’t exist: Broad disapproval for Trump’s handling of coronavirus, race relations: POLL.

He’s gone too far this time. He thought he could lie his way out of a pandemic like he’s lied his way out of everything in his entire life, but this time the American public is feeling the pain themselves; coronavirus is touching everyone, personally. And that tends to make reality un-ignorable.

But don’t expect him to change course, no matter how many people die. He’s wrecking his own re-election chances, just by being himself. It’s poetic justice.

They had six fucking months to prepare for this coming onslaught, and wasted it entirely.

Instead of having emergency beds and temporary hospitals ready to receive patients, they’re now scrambling to do what should have been done after seeing NY scramble to do the same exact thing.

This is all so fucking frustrating and avoidable.

I suspect the only reason that Trump even has 33% support at this point is that it’s mostly among the folks who aren’t directly affected by covid19. They might be in states/places where covid19 hasn’t completely shut things down or run amok.

Expect his numbers to dive as the number of deaths and cases soar in FL, TX, and AZ in particular. It’ll be hard to blame anyone but the GOP for those - since it’s the GOP that blocked the localities from imposing strong masking/social distancing measures.

The delays have deadly consequences.

And it should end the GOP (but it wont, because party above nation).

Dave In Austin  Jul 10, 2020 • 12:29:28pm

One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with Fat Donny.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to the “Asshole of Queens.”

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Mango Moron about it.
“Don, you said once I decided to follow you,
You’d walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don’t understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me.”

He whispered, “My poor, ignorant, uninformed child, I don’t care about you and never will.
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I was teeing off on the 12 hole at Mara Lago that you were paying for”.

From my CL’d response downstairs:

Maybe if they weren’t braindead Trump acolytes and Faux news watchers, they might have understood that there was no guarantee that the disease was going away in the spring. Many really believed that the warmer weather and more intense sunshine would destroy the virus. Our brother assured us that Abbott knew what he was doing and that Texas was handling this much better than those Democratic states out East; he could point to their numbers for the first few months to support that contention.

Worried about my relatives in South Carolina where COVID is now running out of control…

smart and prudent people can manage this (for a while) if they are somewhat lucky

we’re 20 miles from where this is going on in miami but it could be across the country for all the effect it’s having on us

we’re lucky we can work from home
like anyone who lives sort of rural-ish, at least theres room to get out and move around
virtually no need to go out except once a week for food and the occasional home depot (we have a pond you know)
then its masks, sanitizer, distancing, and the rest of the checklist

we have almost no other interactions with anybody

we can do this for a while - till enough people get the message or something else positive happens and the tide turns.
it’s not ideal and assumes a lot doesnt go wrong (mrs dm’s lung condition)

so open the bars or dont. i dont care
same with restaurants
and beaches

we’re staying far away (except for 3 local eateries we have become comfortable with for takeout - who are clearly being conscientious and concerned about us)

Reports coming in from Phoenix that some local hospitals are getting refrigerator trucks ready because of surge in deaths overwhelming their morgues.

This is the same thing that happened in the NYC metro area. Hospitals got overwhelmed by deaths occurring in a very short time, and funeral homes couldn’t take the bodies fast enough. Everything is accustomed to a pace of deaths, and when you’re in a pandemic, the regular deaths keep happening, but now you have additional deaths from covid19 overwhelming those processes.

It was avoidable too - just wear your fucking masks and social distance.

The more I think about this the angrier I get.

This is what a total jackass our governor is:

“We know that young adults who are rapidly contracting the virus and spreading it into our communities frequently congregate in late-night atmospheres which simply are not conducive to stopping its continued transmission,” McMaster said. “This measured, carefully tailored approach will lessen the opportunity for South Carolinians to put themselves and their loved ones in harm’s way.”

Our school district, outside of Houston in the center of a COVID tornado right now, is making us decide if we’re going to keep our kids home next semester or send them to school. The boys, 15 and 18, want to be home. They miss their friends but they don’t want to be in a school building in the middle of a pandemic.

My husband is a teacher and has no choice, he must go back. But we’re keeping the boys home. Tough decision but we’ll see where we are in the spring. I work at home so the three of us will ride it out and watch my husband closely for any kind of contact.

Not worth it. Just not worth it for my family. I feel awful for every family having to make this decision. And those who have no choice but to send their kids back.

Trouble is, people everywhere are just getting Covid fatigue. We’ve been sheltering in place for 4 months and nothing has changed. Testing is better, but the hospital where my daughter works still can’t test everyone when they’re admitted to that hospital. Contact tracing is a joke, in part because it’s taking so long to get test results back in some areas that there is no point. States have some responsibility, but without Federal planning and assistance, it’s kind of hopeless. PPE is starting to run low again. A friend of my daughter’s sent her a picture of the bottom of a box of surgical masks provided by Kaiser to their employees* that clearly stated “Not for medical use.”

Some people are in denial, but others have just kind of given up, as far as I can tell.
Mr. C. and I been feeling kind of bad too, but I’m planning on a sit-down with him to come up with a plan to keep us sane for the next 6 months, ‘cause I don’t see an end to this any time soon.

Exactly. The modern history of the GOP is a farce in five acts:

Act I: Goldwater gets the nomination in 1964, setting in motion the long process where bigots and cranks took over the party.

Act II: Nixon, where the GOP learned that it needed to have more unprincipled Senators rather than better presidents.

Act III: Reagan, where the GOP fully embraced illusions in preference to reality.

Act IV: Gingrich, where the GOP declared total scorched-earth partisan warfare.

Act V part 1: W Bush, where all of the preceding combined into a clusterfuck of previously unimaginable scope and scale.

Act V, part 2: Trump, where all of the preceding combined into a clusterfuck of previously unimaginable scope and scale.

Compare and contrast:

Fund-raising for Biden, from Carole King:

As a Biden supporter and an online donor, I’ve been getting a lot of emails from the Biden campaign.

At first I thought, I’ve already donated. Why do they keep asking?
Then I remember what’s at stake, and I donate again.

The campaign to elect Joe Biden is more than a campaign. It’s a strong, vibrant movement that I’m proud to be part of.

I know that individuals and families are struggling to get through this historically difficult time of multiple crises. But I also know that President Joe Biden, God willing, will make things less difficult.

If you can give $5, or even one dollar, for each of the next few months until the election, you, too, will be a part of this growing movement…

Fund-raising email from the thing (same bullshit sent three times since yesterday afternoon—with a ONE HOUR DEADLINE)

Friend,

Crooked Hillary just held ANOTHER fundraiser for Sleepy Joe Biden.

Last time this CROOKED duo held a fundraiser, they raked in over $2 MILLION in a single night thanks to their radical base of MEGA HOLLYWOOD DONORS.

Joe Biden might have the liberal MEGA donors on his side, but I have something better…

I have YOU on my team, and that’s all I’ll ever need.

I want to do something HUGE, which is why I’m calling on my BEST supporters, like YOU, to help me make a statement by OUTRAISING these CROOKS.

For the NEXT HOUR, all contributions made will be 500%-MATCHED.

I can’t do this alone, Friend. I need you to step up. I want a list of ALL Patriots who donate in the NEXT HOUR.

If every Patriot who reads this email donates, we’ll CRUSH an all-time record and demolish Joe Biden’s campaign.

I smell desperation, and it’s not coming from Biden’s campaign.

Worse than that. Seeing what hit New York, they should have prepared for a nationwide shutdown (together or as individual states), so they’d not get to the point of needing all that.

CA did it — hampered by bad behavior in some (reddish) areas — but even with our setbacks, we’re still able to help other states out.

What we didn’t do in CA was wait until ubiquitous testing and contact tracing capability was in place before starting to open anything. That was the whole point of the shutdown. Even California basically flushed 3 months down the toilet for nothing.

We just had a few more people taking it seriously is all.

Yes I know this was mostly Trump’s fault, but we should have just stayed shutdown and explained *exactly* why we were.

I think part of the problem was not clearly explaining to everyone from the average person, to county governments what exactly the point of the shutdown was and how long it would actually take. They were literally saying “shutdown for 2-3 weeks” in some places back in March like that was realistic. I told everyone I know back then: “Don’t make any plans before July, and probably none before the end of the year”. Many thought I was overreacting.

I don’t think trump had the ability to think in What If’s or woulda, coulda, shoulda because that would mean he has the ability for retrospection. He doesn’t.

On the other hand, there are a lot of people who desperately need financial support because there jobs are gone, or at least on hold. States, even CA, can’t really cover that need.
The longer the shut down goes on, the more damage is done, and the more things people need that aren’t “essential” items. The economy has winners and losers that aren’t equitable. If you can only buy shoes for the kids at Walmart because they also sell groceries and are allowed to be open, that’s where you buy them. The local store goes out of business. If you don’t let Walmart sell non-essentials, then you have to mail order those shoes which may or may not fit. The local store still goes out of business.

I’m not suggesting that we just need to suck it up and reopen the economy, but I don’t think keeping the economy shut down for the next 6 months is practical. We need to have a national plan, and I don’t know where we’re going to get such a thing in time to prevent massive damage to people’s lives and the country as a whole.

Apparently conservatism is a suicide pact.

Yeah. I actually have a metric for whether I really ought to be feeling sorry for myself. I ask myself if other people have it worse (because there is always someone who does-even if it’s not Anne Frank level worse.) If that doesn’t make me feel better, then I really don’t have a problem, which is counter-intuitive, but that’s how it is. I also don’t have pictures of any of this but *yesterday* I had to go to the bank. My local one was all locked up at noon on Thursday with a sign on the door “Closed for Emergency. Will reopen ASAP.”

(Assuming there was an incident with a Karen coughing on shit, or an employee tested positive)

So I go to the next closest of the same bank. I get there. The. Same. Damn. Thing. Happened there.

Right next door to this one is a bar. The patio is moderately filled with assholes who apparently just *needed* to go to a bar at noon on a Thursday during a pandemic and of course aren’t masked, but then again you can’t exactly eat or drink with one on so I’m not too pissy about that, but their server looked like he was dressed for surgery. If your server has to look like that to survive a day at work, the place shouldn’t be open and you. do. not. need. to. be. there.

Finally the 3rd branch of that bank I went to was open.

This is urban/suburban California right now people.

If I’m outdoors in a park or empty street, I take the damned thing off, when I approach a street with people (“Crowds? What are these ‘crowds’ of which you speak?”) I put it on. Pretty much everyone I see does the same.

As I already remarked, not all of it.

This rule is open for public comment for another 5 days.

Procedures for Asylum and Withholding of Removal; Credible Fear and Reasonable Fear

SPLC: The proposed rule would end longstanding protections, making it nearly impossible for most migrants to win asylum. It would block many asylum seekers from even getting to court in the first place, and it would generally deny people asylum if they fled gender-based persecution, domestic abuse or gang violence. This means that a person who has received death threats because of their sexual orientation, who is fleeing a forced marriage, who is being abused by their spouse or who is being threatened by gangs would generally not be granted asylum.

Kind of a serious answer, and admittedly something I’ve said here before:

When he starts spouting crazy shit it’s not because he has no faculties, it’s because he doesn’t have an executive part of his conscience that instructs him that every rando thing going through his head isn’t preciously smart and important.

In a sense, he’s never actually in the real world because he can’t conceive that his whims aren’t reality.

ETA: and I do mean “conscience” not “consciousness. His internal world is more important than stuff like…people dying of an illness en masse, women not wanted to be sexually assaulted, any and all rules.

The rambling speech is because he doesn’t care if the audience understands or if his point is clear: because the point of talking is not to communicate but proclaim, there’s no reason to structure what’s said.

hi

Whelp … Sleeping Giants comes under fire for misogamy aimed at the female founder from the male founder. She left the group and detailed the issue in a Medium post, which Wonkette sumarised.

Sleeping Giants Not Very Woke

When Matt and I came out in July 2018 on the front page of the business section of the New York Times, I believed it was as equal partners. It was through Matt’s subsequent media appearances I realized he considered me an optional part of the story.

In the weeks after we went public, he positioned himself as Founder of Sleeping Giants and went on to take interviews with Pod Save America, Kara Swisher and AdWeek. In AdWeek, I ended up portrayed as “one of the individuals who helps him run the accounts.”

Without my knowledge, my story was being defined by someone else — a white man who could use his platform to exclude me, diminish me, or disappear me entirely. He never once invited me to join him. I never had any idea he was doing any of these interviews until it was too late.

I saw your private note you left yesterday. I did think of your family while I was commenting about my family.

I had my first social visit today. I had told my oldest sister that I would be out on my scooter today and probably near her neighborhood. When I stopped, I called from their driveway because I didn’t want to go into the house (mostly because I’d been experiencing a sore throat this morning like I do most mornings due to allergies). I was wearing my mask until they brought out a drink for me. We sat outdoors in a nice breeze with proper distancing. They talked about visiting a lot with the kids and grandkids and going out for dinner the night before. I was starting to get a little freaked out when they were passing me their cell phones to show me pictures of the grandkids. I left feeling that I’d been pretty neurotic to them, but I also pulled over a few miles from their house and slathered my hands (and scooter hand grips) with sanitizer.

PS: Today’s weather was as perfect a MN summer day as possible. What a nice day.

Mrs. Fish’s equivalent of “tuna and peas” was frozen veggies and ramen. She still makes it (occasionally with air-fried chunks of frozen chicken breast) as a peasant dish. Chambers returns birthday card from Ricketts unopened, citing ‘racist’ campaign flyer (Omaha World-Herald)

State Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha is not really one to mark birthdays to begin with, but he was particularly steamed Friday when he received a card, via interoffice mail, from Gov. Pete Ricketts.

He didn’t open it, so he had to assume it was a birthday card. And he quickly penned a message on the front of the envelope to send back through the same delivery system.

Friday was Chambers’ 83rd birthday. It may be the last one he spends as a state senator, Nebraska’s longest-serving one, as his term expires in January.
