Scientific American Endorses Joe Biden - Their First Presidential Endorsement in 175 Years

Politics • Views: 18,619

This is huge news. America’s most prestigious scientific journal has never endorsed a presidential candidate in their entire 175-year history, but that tradition ends today: Scientific American Endorses Joe Biden - Scientific American.

The evidence and the science show that Donald Trump has badly damaged the U.S. and its people—because he rejects evidence and science. The most devastating example is his dishonest and inept response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which cost more than 190,000 Americans their lives by the middle of September. He has also attacked environmental protections, medical care, and the researchers and public science agencies that help this country prepare for its greatest challenges. That is why we urge you to vote for Joe Biden, who is offering fact-based plans to protect our health, our economy and the environment. These and other proposals he has put forth can set the country back on course for a safer, more prosperous and more equitable future.

Read the whole thing. It’s a matter of life and death.

This election is going to be the biggest procedural clusterfuck ever seen. There is a total lack of goodwill on one side - namely the side that knows it is going to get fewer popular votes.

“…Stevenson loved language and was a gifted orator. A sharp wit, he could be both high-minded and self-deprecating. In one oft-quoted story, a supporter shouted, “Governor Stevenson, you have the vote of all the thinking people,” to which he replied, “That’s not enough, madam. I need a majority.” New York Herald Tribune columnist Stewart Alsop coined the term “egghead” to describe the urbane, intellectual, and balding Stevenson.
…………
His political opponents in 1952 were vicious: Vice presidential nominee Richard Nixon, red-baiting Senator Joseph McCarthy, and FBI director J. Edgar Hoover smeared the Stevenson campaign as a bunch of “pinks and pansies.”

In response, Stevenson quipped, “I would make a proposition to my Republican friends … that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.”

I wasn’t even alive for Mt. St. Helens. I do remember seeing high-altitude haze like this during the recent Canadian wildfires a couple of years back. This is almost no impact on our breathable air quality, IIRC - it looks weird and a bit disquieting, but at least we can live with it. I don’t envy my West Coast friends in the least.

The choice is clear, America.

You can elect Joe Biden, who has a $2 trillion plan to make our energy production sustainable and fight the effects of climate change.

Or you can elect Donald Trump, who thinks California is burning because they haven’t been raking their forests.

For those who have joined the cult, every word from Trump’s lips is a pearl of wisdom. Our Trumpster brother, who has an engineering degree from U of I, repeats this nonsense whenever we discuss the fires out west. Their minds are broken and it’s unclear what can restore them to sanity.

At least he believes the pandemic is real, though deaths are on blue state governors. And he believes that we are not in particular danger from a serious case of Covid because he thinks that we are not suffering from the comorbidities that make the disease more deadly (but my sister and I have both had cancer, I’ve had open heart surgery and high cholesterol, and he has high blood pressure that is controlled by medication).

That would actually be fine. The problem is that there is no money in doing so.
I keep seeing over and over on conservative sites that we need to let loggers go in and remove dead and damaged trees as well as the overgrown brush and small trees that feed the fires. I cannot recall reading anywhere about a logging company refused access to do so. They have to be bribed by letting them take out the big stuff too, which is not a great idea.

There may be places and situations where commercial loggers can make money on the stuff that needs to be removed, but these forests aren’t those places.

They are probably already there. Was just watching a BBC report about hospitals turning away patients because they are over capacity and telling them to go to private hospitals, which of course most can’t afford.

We have never pursued how dead wood is to be removed. Maybe that should be a topic of conversation. He only discussed how the farmers/ranchers in Texas made changes to their land management to reduce fires there — a totally different environment and situation.

Cool project!

It seems to me that the major rifle/pistol development of the past 40 years has been in optics. High quality lenses, mass production of excellent scopes, red-dot, etc…

You point that out perfectly by putting a modern red-dot scopes on a 120 year old rifle. Something that the original Krag design team had never even envisioned.

Well, yes. Along with the argument that climate change didn’t cause the fires, arsonists did. Which isn’t true in most cases (human caused ≠ arson) and implies that arson is a very recent development.

True, but also, AFAIC, the “whole argument” is to avoid admitting that the Trump Administration (or the US government in general - it’s questionable whether Trump sees any difference) has ANY responsibility for ANYTHING. Anything that doesn’t make The Donald look good, that is: anything that discredits the Administration/makes him look bad is, of course, always and eternally Someone Else’s Fault…

On Trump and forest fires…

I cannot say what his thinking was…

But the effort seemed to be directed at two things:

1. Seizing control of the narrative and,

2. Disrupting and demeaning others’ work on climate change and public safety issues.

Which makes it into a zero-sum game. And redefines the problem to “who is in control” rather than solving a threat to public safety effort.

To move on from gun schtick to politics, Boebert had ditched her dyed-blonde and flannel-shirt persona and adopted Palin-style glasses and long, dark hair. Like Palin, she honed a steady stream of crowd-pleasing, quick-draw insults aimed at anyone who didn’t share her ultraconservative views. Those who did ate it up.

Sure, emulating Sarah Palin seems like a winning strategy.

//

Also:

Boebert has glossed over any mention of a father. She has not explained why she has two birth dates in official records. She has not responded to questions about what the “multiracial” background is that she has listed on official forms. She has touted her business success but has not mentioned her brief, unsuccessful turn at running a golf club restaurant in Rifle. She has not included in her bootstraps biography the fact that she was evicted from her Rifle home in 2010 before a foreclosure. And there has been no mention of her failure to vote in at least four primary elections prior to this year’s primary.

Boebert was reached for comment on her cell phone number, which was included in a police report. But she said she was just going into a meeting and would have to speak to her campaign manager. She never responded again and neither did anyone from her campaign.

Trump is just missing the obvious — the rise in atmospheric CO2 is accompanied with a fall in atmospheric O2. No free oxygen, no forest fires.

Global warming may be the cause of forest fires over the short term, but give it enough time and it will be the long term solution.

The only “person” Donny listens to is his own ego. Another point in favor of Donny showing up for at least one debate: He’s still working on a 2016 mindset, where his ability to avoid shitting his drawers on live TV was hailed as “presidential” by a press who had lowered the bar to the floor of Satan’s wine cellar. He still thinks he’s gonna be able to “dominate” the debate despite the formats being totally different, where he can’t play to a crowd and stomp around like a fucking golem. I’m thinking that both sides will show up for the debate and the results will be a confused mess that the media can’t bring into any kind of perspective and Trump will claim total exoneration. Why should it be different than anything that’s already happened.

I don’t think that a Trump victory would follow, I just think that the first and maybe all of the debates are going to be a shitshow.

Edit: I said it before and I’ll say it again. Trump’s only goal in a debate will be to get Joe to stutter.

KGxvi  Sep 15, 2020 • 2:01:33pm

The debates are going to be a shitshow this year. More so than they were in 2016. And the thing is, they probably aren’t going to move the needle much. Trump’s favorables are not going to improve, which means, unless Biden literally (not figuratively) soils himself on stage, there isn’t anything Trump can do to get above about 44%. It’s all baked in at this point - an incumbent’s share of the popular vote usually tracks pretty well with his approval rating. If there are any undecideds left, they’re most likely deciding between Biden and not voting (basically they want to know more about him and/or his policies).

I remember someone IRL saying in 2016 that they were most interested in the VP debate because they figured whoever ended up VP would probably be finishing the term for the presidential nominee anyway.

I don’t think that’s necessarily the case this time… but I wouldn’t be surprised if whomever the VP is come January 21, 2021 is also their party’s nominee in 2024.

Yeah, I think the VP debate is going to be the more interesting of the two, if only because Pence can actually string words together in something resembling conscious thought rather than a stream of consciousness. The problem in his case is he has all the charisma of a dish rag.

And he expects Joe to act like Hillary, smiling and giving polite “laughter” whenever Donny tries to bully him into keeping quiet.

I can’t wait until he tries to deliver one of his bullshit answers and Biden replies with ‘Come on, man! You’ve been president for nearly four years, don’t you know how any of this works yet?

The only “person” Donny listens to is his own ego. And his ego has been so bruised in recent months by suggestions that he’s unfit and possibly suffered mental impairment, that bowing out of a debate with a guy who he’s regularly accused of being “senile” would be a major blow to said ego. So he’s gonna show up, if only to then have one of his staff cut together a video of “gaffes” from Joe to say “proves” that he’s too gone mentally to be trusted with the presidency.

Recall that his cult were all in on his dominating Hillary and claiming victory during the 2016 debates. Trump cannot physically dominate Biden; they may not even be on the same stage; but he will go off tangent and ignore the questions. How will the moderators ever force him to respond to a specific question? And on the rare occasion he does answer, he will lie about his actions and policies. He will use the platform as a campaign rally to display to the typical low-information voter his prowess.

Meanwhile Biden may feel obliged to address the questions, and thereby allow many of Trump’s allegations to go unanswered — because there is a Gish Gallop of them whenever he speaks.

The mistake everyone in the 2016 Republican primary, as well as Clinton, made in the debates was treating Trump like he was acting in good faith. And more often than not, they let him bully them into agreeing with him (see the entire Republican Party on everything and Clinton on TPP).

Hillary pretty much played the entire election with a handicap, needing to avoid any moments that could be spun as “lecturing,” “mean,” or “bitchy” by her critics. That meant she had to smile and laugh at Trump’s antics where a male candidate could have all but kicked him in the jimmies on live TV and received praise for such.

Were the two of them sharing a stage before a live audience, I doubt Joe would put up for a moment with Trump constantly invading his personal space to loom over him. Or will allow Donny to interrupt him constantly in order to “correct” him.

Everyone in the White House tells him what he wants to hear, because they’re all afraid of being yelled at. The RNC has had to spend ad dollars in DC to make him feel better. They’ve cooked the poll numbers. They’re required to say nice things about him. Look at Ronna Romney’s ridiculous tweet yesterday about Biden’s response to COVID.

It’s like they’re not even trying to win an election, just trying not to get on the boss’ bad side.

They’re probably filling his head with the idea that Biden’s a pushover. And when Fox & Friends asked him about preparing for the debates, the very best he could do was rattle off where he’s flown to on AF1.

Story I read the other week was that he’s doing no debate prep whatsoever, just working on the principle that working the job means he’s fully prepared. The translation is pretty easy to see: He thinks he’s can just do as he has been and bullshit his way to victory. Problem for him is that, unlike all those “press conferences” this past summer, he can’t just walk away from the podium the moment he gets a question he doesn’t want to answer.

Global warming may be the cause of forest fires over the short term, but give it enough time and it will be the long term solution.

That isn’t happening. The ratio of oxygen to CO2 is 21%/.04%. CO2 is deadly at 5%. That means we’d be dead while O is still 16%.

And our current rep, Andy Biggs (head of the Freedumb Caucus), has made a point of making nicey-nice with Evangelical churches where they do believe he’s a member of a cult and going to hell. But they’re all united, Andy Biggs, so many Mormons, and 80 percent of the Evangelicals, in worshiping their new god Donald John Trump.

re: #167 EPR-radar

Chris Wallace works at Fox News. Therefore his only job is getting Republicans elected. The only open question is if Wallace is doing this knowingly or unknowingly.

Open question?? Nope. He knows exactly what he’s doing.

And what happens when Wallace’s questions are about Hunter Biden, and the Obama administration spying on Trump during the campaign and trying to prevent his election? What happens when Barr magically produces the Durham “report” immediately prior to the debate — but provides an advance copy to Fox so that they can develop questions that will make Biden appear as though he is concealing misconduct? One cannot trust anything associated with Fox, especially given they are the ones who guide Trump’s policies.

As for Trump debate preparation, the NY Times described it as follows for 2016:

Mr. Trump is largely shunning traditional debate preparations, but has been watching video of Mrs. Clinton’s best and worst debate moments, looking for her vulnerabilities.
…..
Mr. Trump, in turn, is approaching the debate like a Big Man on Campus who thinks his last-minute term paper will be dazzling simply because he wrote it.

He has paid only cursory attention to briefing materials. He has refused to use lecterns in mock debate sessions despite the urging of his advisers. He prefers spitballing ideas with his team rather than honing them into crisp, two-minute answers.
….
He believes debates are not won or lost on policy minutiae since most viewers will not remember them in an hour. ….
….
Unpredictable. Whether in politics or business, he takes pride in sizing up opponents based on their language, posture, eye contact, and particularly the needs and goals that his adversaries have at that moment. He will hold back, lunge forward, or stay cagey at varying points in hopes of knocking his opponent off balance.

Trump will play to his strength — lying about everything. This time he probably won’t be able to dominate the stage because it will likely be a split screen.
